Why there is still more to come from Lundstram despite latest blank

Norwich City 1-2 Sheffield United

Goals: Alex Tettey (£4.5m) | Enda Stevens (£5.1m), George Baldock (£4.7m)

Assists: Christoph Zimmermann (£4.4m) | Baldock

Bonus Points: Baldock x3, Tettey x2, Stevens x1

Despite a much-needed win for Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon, there were no returns at either end of the pitch for John Lundstram (£5.1m).

The central midfielder, classified as a defender in Fantasy Premier League, blanked for the fourth time in the last five Gameweeks, causing some to lose faith in his services.

The slight waning of interest in Lundstram is understandable, to some extent, considering the recent form of George Baldock (£4.7m) who scored a spectacular individual winning goal in Gameweek 16.

Baldock (left) celebrates scoring an excellent goal for Sheffield United

Having provided the assist for Enda Stevens‘ (£5.1m) equaliser, Baldock left Carrow Road with a 14-point haul having claimed all three bonus too.

That means that since Gameweek 11, the right-back has outscored Lundstram by 34 points to 31, even though that run includes the midfielder’s famous 21-point monster haul in the 3-0 win over Burnley.

Since that time, Baldock has kept the same number of clean sheets as Lundstram (one) but has added two goals, two assists and three bonus.

However, Lundstram owners should certainly keep the faith, regardless of what time they bought him.

Those who have been in possession since the start of the campaign can still only sell him for £4.5m, a bracket which, at the current stage, still offers very few viable alternatives.

But either way, it must be said that Lundstram was extremely unfortunate not to get more returns at each end of the pitch against Norwich.

Lundstram was incredibly unfortunate not to get attacking returns against Norwich

For a start, the Sheffield United defence largely restricted the Canaries’ attack to low-quality chances, Daniel Farke’s men not fashioning a single big chance in open play, so there could have been a clean sheet were it not for a fortunate bounce off Christoph Zimmermann (£4.4m) following a corner, which Alex Tettey (£4.5m) pounced on to score.

Crucially, Lundstram was very close to involving himself in Sheffield United’s goals.

He assisted the assister for Stevens’ goal, releasing Baldock down the right flank when he probably could have crossed the ball in himself.

Lundstram then did play a ball into the box from the right flank minutes later, which nearly reached the intended target, Baldock. However, the right-back only received the ball after Mario Vrančić (£6.2m) lost possession of his cut-out. Had the cross gone directly to Baldock, Lundstram would have been awarded the assist.

As Sheffield United continued to turn the screw on their hosts, Lundstram had the ball in the back of the net shortly after Baldock’s strike, only for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to rule it out for offside.

Had McGoldrick finally managed to score for the Blades, Lundstram would have got an assist

Finally, a late counter-attack pitted Lundstram, David McGoldrick (£5.4m) and substitute Callum Robinson (£5.1m) against two Norwich defenders and a goal looked quite likely. Lundstram played McGoldrick in, who could only blast his effort over the bar, remaining still in search of his first Premier League goal this season.

With all of those events in mind, it certainly makes sense to hold onto Lundstram and consider starting him against Aston Villa in Gameweek 17 considering the defensive vulnerabilities of Dean Smith’s men thus far this season.

We should probably touch on the defensive prospects of Sheffield United considering a recent interest in a double-up on their assets, often involving goalkeeper Dean Henderson (£4.7m).

After keeping four clean sheets between Gameweeks 6 and 11, it has now been five matches since their last shut-out. With Aston Villa (home) and Brighton (away) coming up next, as well as trips to Manchester City and Liverpool in Gameweeks 20 and 21, it seems possible that clean sheets may continue to be an issue for the Blades.

Mousset had to come off injured at Carrow Road

Rotation could also present a slight issue for those invested in their attack over Christmas. Lys Mousset (£5.1m) did return to the side at Norwich, following his midweek benching, but did have to come off with a calf injury after 64 minutes.

He has struggled with some muscle problems in the last few months and may have his minutes managed during the festive period, as we already saw with Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) playing 90 minutes against Newcastle.

Owners of Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) may also experience a similar frustration as he was named on the bench for the third time since Gameweek 11.

Onel Hernández (£5.3m) and Emi Buendia (£6.0m) were named on the flanks of attacking midfield for this one, Cantwell replacing the Cuban in the 72nd minute.

The youngster admittedly came close to scoring, forcing a quality save out of Henderson late in the game.

Either way, Farke’s multiple options in wide areas could see Cantwell prove a frustrating asset to own during a busy Christmas period.

Cantwell didn’t start against Sheffield United

Finally, Norwich’s defence remains in a pretty poor shape ahead of the festive schedule, which is good news for owners of assets at Leicester, Wolves, Aston Villa and Spurs, who face the Canaries between now and Gameweek 20.

The first-half was relatively encouraging for Farke as Sheffield United offered little and Norwich largely had control of the game.

However, it all fell apart in the second period, in which the Blades came back into the game and exposed the ongoing issues with Norwich’s defence.

They have now conceded 34 goals this season, an average of 2.2 per game, only Southampton (35) allowing more in the first 16 matches.

Norwich City XI (4-2-3-1): Krul; Byram (Lewis 72′), Godfrey, Zimmermann, Aarons; Vrančić (Srbeny 81′), Tettey; O Hernández (Cantwell 72′), McLean, Buendía; Pukki.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): D Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Norwood (Bešić 65′), Lundstram, Baldock; Mousset (Robinson 65′), McGoldrick (McBurnie 83′).

    d) save FT

What do people think of this plan? Please forgive the length of the post!

This GW: Jimi > Tammy (FT)

For GW18: Mount, Soy > Son, Kelly (-4)

    For GW19: Ings > Rashford

    1FT 6.3itb
    Guaita
    TAA, Lunds, Willems
    Mané, Alli, Maddison, Mount*
    Vardy (C), Jimi*, Ings*
    (McGovern) (Soy*, Dendo, Rico)

I just think Tammy vs BOU is a fantastic fixture and I plan to get him in as my only CHE player for now anyway. Yes Rashford could be fantastic vs EVE but we haven't seen him yet vs teams that can sit back and defend really and Ings is in form and has decent fixtures for the next couple so may be ok to hold off.

Jimi has been a great player to own and could do well vs Spurs but I plan to move him on over next couple anyway and I see the alternatives having higher ceilings.

Would be great to hear your thoughts!

    Cheers

      I like your plans.
Abraham in v an injury hit Bournemouth defence looks a great move.
I took Jimi out. He doesn't seem to haul. I think Jota is the man now like he was the second half on last season .
I removed Jimi for rashford this week.

Solid - price changes going to stop the transfers?

Defo agree on this weeks move - I did the same.

Next week presumably you have cash itb so could just move for son and keep soy?

      1. Don Kloppeone
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

        Thanks

Those moves across the 3 GWs would currently leave me only 0.1itb so it will be touch and go if not timed correctly.

I have 6.3m itb currently so plenty to go around but why would I not do the Soy move next week when they play MCI and I would be benching him anyway?

    3. antis0cial
      • 7 Years

Sound good moves to me, although there is still lots of value in Soy (cheap way into best def in league) but he does have two tough fixtures coming up.

      1. Don Kloppeone
        • 6 Years

I do like Soy but his downgrade facilitates the Ings > Rashford move in GW19 and if I move him on in GW18 then I avoid the MCI and LIV fixtures ....

Looks like a plan. AGree with Tammy for this week.
      BUT
Wouldn't want to lose Soy and I see you have plenty ITB, but does that cover what will be Rashford's likely huge leap in price if he continues to do well?

      1. Don Kloppeone
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

This is the issue - those moves over the 3 GWs leave me with just 0.1 itb currently so I have to find a downgrade to fund getting in Rashford for Ings. Soy seemed reasonable but maybe Maddison is a better fall guy?

It's a really complicated few weeks and it looks like you've got a decent plan to navigate through it. You might need to be more adaptable over the coming weeks and keep an eye out for whether or not there's a price change around the corner for Abraham or Jimenez this week so you don't miss out. Both have matches coming up so could easily pick up injuries (along with a third of your team).

        Thanks mate.

I am holding off making the move this week until tonight's CL match to see how Tammy looks and how many mins he plays .etc.

I have missed one Jimi drop already and likely to see a Tammy rise before the deadline so likelihood is I would make that move tonight.

Completely agree re. flexibility for the other moves. Fortunately I have a lot of cash itb so if plans need to change then there is the budget to do it

    Tammy, Vardy (Greenwood)

2FTs. Happy with my team this week, but thinking of getting rid of Trent to bolster rest for GW18. Ideally want to play him this week though.

    A. Play Trent this week, minus 4 next week.
    B. Get Trent out this week for e.g. Targett, play Kelly, no hit.
    C. Do something else – e.g. keep Trent, just Tiel and Greenwood out for Grealish and Mouset

If Trent gets 4 more than Kelly (assuming other subs don’t need to come in) this week then worth the hit I think, but TAA out for a hit just sounds wrong.

Other than the usual suspects I'd say for a cheapie Cahill or a Newcastle guy

You wouldn’t spend more than 5m on a defender who is perma bench. I’d look at targett with their good run coming

I chose Mouset over Ings a few weeks ago on my WC and boy do I regret it. With 2 frees and 2.1 itb, should I make that change now or find a way to get Rashford instead, maybe for Tammy, or by doing KDB to Son or Alli for the extra funds (also want to get Puli out)

I have Ings but I feel like anyone who doesn't have him now has missed the boat.

WHU and avl are good fixtures, but fixture become even more congested and then Southampton's fixtures tail off. I'm planning on getting rid of Ings next week or the week after.

Thinking of Soy to Pereira in GW20 with the excess funds from selling my two LIV fullbacks in GWs 18 (Rico) and 19 (Aurier). Barring injuries and other issues, of course

Those fixtures would be nice for attacking returns, I think. All the way to the DGW wildcard season

Eyeing the triple up coverage of Vardy (talisman), Madders (set pieces) and Pereira (CS + attack)

Not expecting that to outscore Maddison's set-piece potential. And I've learnt to stay off double defences in this highly attacking EPL season

Vardy + Madders + Pereira would give me three attacking assets in some good fixtures for attack

Zaha & Kane -> Son & Tammy. Yes right? Would be a double up with Alli.

I was at the Spurs game on Saturday and, despite its huge haul, Kane did not look really threatening. I know he scored 2 and assisted 1 but I felt that were its only actions. On the other hand, Son was such a threat, every time he touched the ball it was a dangerous attack. Often you would see Spurs on a counter with Son Lucas and Alli bombing forward and Kane staying behind.

It's a brave man who makes this move. Risky but long term Son and Tammy are the better picks imho

Largely because it's old copy! I'll look to get it changed.

For the past few years it's been every few weeks - updating it takes time and the changes week to week aren't huge. That's increased this season, as getting the data takes longer than previously.

So the aim isn't (and hasn't been) weekly, but more every few weeks. It also almost always gets done in International Breaks

Yep. He specifically name checked the likes of Walker-Pieters etc.

Kane even said in his interview at the weekend that the Bayern game is a dead-rubber and their focus is now on Wolves.

Combined, I think that's a great differential triple-up. I'd love a Son and Alli double-up but can't fit both in alongside Mane and KDB (currently have Alli).

I think there's a "Liverpool defender" fear on here, but there's no reason why Aurier can't match or better TAA over the next 8 GWs.

True, Pool CS's have been coming all season, but we are yet to see them. I think it might be that time to loose TAA and upgrade the mid as that is where the points are.

    Pope
    Soyuncu, Lundstram, Kelly
    Mane, Kdb, Son, Pulisic
    Vardy, Abraham, Rasford

    Martin, Cahil, Dendoker, Rico

    No ft 1.3m itb

If Pulisic play 90min today think ill swap him for Alli -4 ,if he is rested today probably swap to Alli next week but will miss 0.1/2 m due price changes so it will be for-4 again...
