Why there is still more to come from Lundstram despite latest blank

Norwich City 1-2 Sheffield United

Goals: Alex Tettey (£4.5m) | Enda Stevens (£5.1m), George Baldock (£4.7m)

Assists: Christoph Zimmermann (£4.4m) | Baldock

Bonus Points: Baldock x3, Tettey x2, Stevens x1

Despite a much-needed win for Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon, there were no returns at either end of the pitch for John Lundstram (£5.1m).

The central midfielder, classified as a defender in Fantasy Premier League, blanked for the fourth time in the last five Gameweeks, causing some to lose faith in his services.

The slight waning of interest in Lundstram is understandable, to some extent, considering the recent form of George Baldock (£4.7m) who scored a spectacular individual winning goal in Gameweek 16.

Baldock (left) celebrates scoring an excellent goal for Sheffield United

Having provided the assist for Enda Stevens‘ (£5.1m) equaliser, Baldock left Carrow Road with a 14-point haul having claimed all three bonus too.

That means that since Gameweek 11, the right-back has outscored Lundstram by 34 points to 31, even though that run includes the midfielder’s famous 21-point monster haul in the 3-0 win over Burnley.

Since that time, Baldock has kept the same number of clean sheets as Lundstram (one) but has added two goals, two assists and three bonus.

However, Lundstram owners should certainly keep the faith, regardless of what time they bought him.

Those who have been in possession since the start of the campaign can still only sell him for £4.5m, a bracket which, at the current stage, still offers very few viable alternatives.

But either way, it must be said that Lundstram was extremely unfortunate not to get more returns at each end of the pitch against Norwich.

Lundstram was incredibly unfortunate not to get attacking returns against Norwich

For a start, the Sheffield United defence largely restricted the Canaries’ attack to low-quality chances, Daniel Farke’s men not fashioning a single big chance in open play, so there could have been a clean sheet were it not for a fortunate bounce off Christoph Zimmermann (£4.4m) following a corner, which Alex Tettey (£4.5m) pounced on to score.

Crucially, Lundstram was very close to involving himself in Sheffield United’s goals.

He assisted the assister for Stevens’ goal, releasing Baldock down the right flank when he probably could have crossed the ball in himself.

Lundstram then did play a ball into the box from the right flank minutes later, which nearly reached the intended target, Baldock. However, the right-back only received the ball after Mario Vrančić (£6.2m) lost possession of his cut-out. Had the cross gone directly to Baldock, Lundstram would have been awarded the assist.

As Sheffield United continued to turn the screw on their hosts, Lundstram had the ball in the back of the net shortly after Baldock’s strike, only for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to rule it out for offside.

Had McGoldrick finally managed to score for the Blades, Lundstram would have got an assist

Finally, a late counter-attack pitted Lundstram, David McGoldrick (£5.4m) and substitute Callum Robinson (£5.1m) against two Norwich defenders and a goal looked quite likely. Lundstram played McGoldrick in, who could only blast his effort over the bar, remaining still in search of his first Premier League goal this season.

With all of those events in mind, it certainly makes sense to hold onto Lundstram and consider starting him against Aston Villa in Gameweek 17 considering the defensive vulnerabilities of Dean Smith’s men thus far this season.

We should probably touch on the defensive prospects of Sheffield United considering a recent interest in a double-up on their assets, often involving goalkeeper Dean Henderson (£4.7m).

After keeping four clean sheets between Gameweeks 6 and 11, it has now been five matches since their last shut-out. With Aston Villa (home) and Brighton (away) coming up next, as well as trips to Manchester City and Liverpool in Gameweeks 20 and 21, it seems possible that clean sheets may continue to be an issue for the Blades.

Mousset had to come off injured at Carrow Road

Rotation could also present a slight issue for those invested in their attack over Christmas. Lys Mousset (£5.1m) did return to the side at Norwich, following his midweek benching, but did have to come off with a calf injury after 64 minutes.

He has struggled with some muscle problems in the last few months and may have his minutes managed during the festive period, as we already saw with Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) playing 90 minutes against Newcastle.

Owners of Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) may also experience a similar frustration as he was named on the bench for the third time since Gameweek 11.

Onel Hernández (£5.3m) and Emi Buendia (£6.0m) were named on the flanks of attacking midfield for this one, Cantwell replacing the Cuban in the 72nd minute.

The youngster admittedly came close to scoring, forcing a quality save out of Henderson late in the game.

Either way, Farke’s multiple options in wide areas could see Cantwell prove a frustrating asset to own during a busy Christmas period.

Cantwell didn’t start against Sheffield United

Finally, Norwich’s defence remains in a pretty poor shape ahead of the festive schedule, which is good news for owners of assets at Leicester, Wolves, Aston Villa and Spurs, who face the Canaries between now and Gameweek 20.

The first-half was relatively encouraging for Farke as Sheffield United offered little and Norwich largely had control of the game.

However, it all fell apart in the second period, in which the Blades came back into the game and exposed the ongoing issues with Norwich’s defence.

They have now conceded 34 goals this season, an average of 2.2 per game, only Southampton (35) allowing more in the first 16 matches.

Norwich City XI (4-2-3-1): Krul; Byram (Lewis 72′), Godfrey, Zimmermann, Aarons; Vrančić (Srbeny 81′), Tettey; O Hernández (Cantwell 72′), McLean, Buendía; Pukki.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): D Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Norwood (Bešić 65′), Lundstram, Baldock; Mousset (Robinson 65′), McGoldrick (McBurnie 83′).

Barring any surprises tonight I will be doing Jimi to Tammy for this week. BOU at home is a great fixture for him and he should do well. Jimi has a lower ceiling imo and longer term having the central focus of the CHE attack is likely to remain a good thing.

Agree with this. Vardy and Tammy seem totally essential, with one of Ings, Jimmy or Rashford for the other spot

Sounds sensible. I made that move on Saturday night, along with Sterling to Alli, but I'm not too sure it was the right one. Ings' stats look phenominal and West Ham are abject. Injuries are still the main issue for me, and he's well overdue

He does but I think people are overdoing how valuable he will be. His ceiling isn’t that high. Yes, he is central to their attack and attracts baps, but he basically never gets double digit hauls and a player like Ings can pretty much match him and is in good form for > £1m less cash

I’m not doubting Ings is a good option.

My point was that selling him before a blank gameweek in 18 when he has the most desireable fixture would be a mistake IMO.

I guess if depends who they are selling him for and what the alternatives are.

I am considering getting in Tammy this week for the plum BOU fixture but it would have to be for Jimi (TOT) or Ings (WHU). Based on form and fixtures you’d think Jimi was the one to go this week despite having the better GW18 fixture.

Alternative is to lose Ings now for Tammy and hold Jimi for TOT so I can cap him in GW18 then move on for Rashford

Fair points. I just don't think Tammy is important enough to lose Jimmy for, especially if you are going to captain him in GW18. Tammy just blanked against Everton, Chelsea form is a bit hit and miss right now.

I'd just stick with what you've got, roll the transfer this week and captain Jimmy in 18.

But as managers, we are all different. Good luck either way!

To me the below reads that Liverpool and West Ham players that are on 4 yellows still need to get past GW20 as that their '19th' GW match.

"Any player earning five bookings from his side's first 19 Premier League matches will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition. Yellow cards are not carried over to the League Cup.

All teams will play their 19th fixture in Gameweek 19, apart from Liverpool and West Ham United.

Liverpool's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup means their Gameweek 18 fixture against West Ham has been postponed.

The Reds and Hammers will therefore both play their 19th Premier League match in Gameweek 20, against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City respectively."

That is how i make it out to be, I could be totally wrong.

I base it on the line ""Any player earning five bookings from his side's first 19 Premier League" Their 19th league game is in GW20.

Yeah so if TAA gets a yellow in GW20 (Wolves), As that is his 19th game i assume he will be suspended for GW21 (SHU).

Was all set on doing Auba > Rashford but now considering holding him despite the tough fixtures. City for one seem allergic to clean sheets this season and he may be just as likely to get returns against them as Rashford is against a seemingly rejuvenated Everton. Anyone else in a similar situation?

Same boat and thinking along the same lines... IMO form is similiar (same points total over the last 3) and whilst fixtures better for Rash on paper, I actually think that could harm his Fantasy output (less chances to counter attack). If you have 2 FT and the money would fund another upgrade I would consider... otherwise I think rolling the FT and reassessing next week could be the smarter move

Also: Rash is going to have his better season ever as he is currently matched his most goals from a single season... but isn't that in and of it's self scary? Auba scored 22 goals last year. Proven high performer. Rash scored 10. I'm not on either one and probably won't be buying so either way idc. I think there is way to much hype on Rash.

    2. Save FT. My first 11 isn't bad and I can remove 2 Liv players the following week. Down to the bare bones in GW 18 though.
Can WC the week after to bring back Liv options and jump on some fixture swings + players in form.

Don't like it myself but asking for opinions. Would you do Pulisic + Mousse to Cantwell + Tammy? That would mean having potentialy the best Che asset and also shifting to 433. What do you say, yes or no?

Are there any KDB owners still keeping him? Seems risky to sell as he can haul any time and bought at 9.6 so reluctant to lose the value.

Keeping, feels like city cover should be always in our team, no matter their form. Just too risky without them. Also he is the best value from City. Hopefully when Kun comes back it will look different.

Next week I will have 2FT.

My plan is to take a -4 to bring Rashford in. This will, however, be at the expense of both TAA and Pulisic.

It feels a bit like I'm losing two strong players to get just one, even though my bench is strong...

    Any thoughts?

Seems fine. You're losing TAA who has a blank and Pulisic who has mixed fixtures and poorer form than some others.

Don't deviate because you feel like it. Do it because you think you spotted an opportunity which others don't see. Unfortunately, Vardy is so overwhelmingly good right now that he has to be the pick. He has the stats, Norwich have the bad stats. It's a no-brainer I think.

Did not cap Vardy in the last 5 weeks, chose Son, Son, Son, Son and Alli.

Hi all, I think Klopp will play TAA, Robbo, Salah, Firmino and Mane tonight.
From a non-bias perspective, who would you say is at most risk of a rotational rest come Saturday lunch time?

For the record I own TAA, Robbo and Salah.

I don't think TAA got the rest Klopp would have hoped for, though it could be Robbo who makes way for Milner against the Hornets?
I think Mane is the safest after last week's no show.

T'is the time of year when overthinking can be our own worst enemy. Though it can prove to be costly if we choose to captain a player that comes with such risk. I wanted to captain Salah again but surely it comes with a high risk given the quality of options this week

I agree. I was in 2 minds whether to bench them both next week, though I could move Robbo on. AWB would jump out if Utd looked liked they had a clean sheet in them but they don't

I don't think rotation is an issue on Saturday, Liverpool will be full strength on Saturday, last game before Qatar, no chances will be taken. More likely to rotate in Qatar given the quality of the opposition in the semi-final at least.

      1. Pep Pig
        • 7 Years

I think the rotation side isn't just about resting players, it's just as much getting players match fit for the busy period ahead and the business end of the season. No one predicted the starting 11 in the Merseyside derby. I hope you're right though

Re: the derby, two words - Divock Origi

He loves it against the Ev. Far more likely to have him and Shaqiri starting that than Watford. Salah has had a few rests already this season given his bad ankle. They'll play Saturday, be rested in Qatar as much as possible, and for the FA Cup. I would expect to see full strength v Leicester with some changes for Wolves.

The midfield three is the main area to keep fresh, they do a lot of the leg work and with Fabinho out till NY, I suspect we will see more of Keita, Lallana, Oxlade Chamberlain in the flat track bully type fixtures.

I was kind of set on doing Cantwell to Grealish. Play 3-5-2. Mousset on 1bench spot.

But i have enough money to do Mousset to Abraham. And play 3-4-3.

    So:

    A. Cantwell to Grealish
    B. Mousset to Abraham.

I prefer B mate. I own Grealish and think he will keep his form. Though I think 3-4-3 is very much back in the mix this season with so many decent cheap-mid forwards

Look at your gw rank and then you will know. You have to be in top 4,2m players in that gw to qualify, which I think almost everyone did.
