Ings continues scoring run as Shelvey nets third goal in three

Newcastle 2-1 Southampton

Goals: Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m), Federico Fernández (£4.4m) | Danny Ings (£6.3m)

Assists: Andy Carroll (£5.4m), Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) | Jack Stephens (£4.3m)

Bonus Points: Shelvey x3, Ings x2, Fernández x1

Danny Ings (£6.3m) continued his excellent scoring run even as Southampton lost to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

The centre-forward became the first Saints player to score in five consecutive Premier League appearances since James Beattie in 2003.

Such a record should only increase interest in Ings especially as West Ham (home) and Aston Villa (away) are Southampton’s next two opponents.

The former Burnley and Liverpool man has arguably been the second-most reliable Fantasy forward for some time, with only Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) scoring more times (13) than Ings (eight) since Gameweek 7.

Ings has been in incredible form for Southampton

Furthermore, Ings is now the best-value among FPL forwards, registering 13.3 points per million spent this season.

His latest strike was a simple route-one goal. Jack Stephens (£4.3m) played a long-ball over the top from his centre-back position, which Ings ran onto after it bypassed Federico Fernández (£4.4m). The former Swansea defender did his best to harry Ings, who shrugged off the pressure and hooked an effort under Martin Dúbravka (£5.0m).

Also adding to Ings’ appeal is his propensity to secure bonus points. The fact that his volume of shots is never normally too high means that very few of his efforts end up off-target.

Therefore, in each of his last five matches, Ings has got bonus in all of them, registering the maximum amount in Gameweeks 14 and 15, while claiming two of them against Newcastle.

Ward-Prowse was a little unfortunate not to get something from this game

Ings remains the most viable option at Southampton, as James Ward-Prowse (£5.9m) blanked at St James’ Park, although it was his first since Gameweek 12.

The midfielder did admittedly come close to some attacking returns as he caused havoc from his set-piece delivery. Shane Long (£4.6m) was close to nodding one of his corners beyond Dúbravka but his effort went just wide.

Meanwhile, Nathan Redmond (£6.2m) remains a Fantasy nearly-man as he twice went close to scoring.

Early-on, he pounced on a poor pass back across the defence from Jetro Willems (£4.7m) and got through on goal. Redmond shot low forcing Dúbravka to produce a decent save with his feet, although he probably should have found the back of the net given the circumstances.

Redmond had two excellent chances but could not find the net against Newcastle

Shortly after, Redmond then blasted a well-struck shot at Dúbravka again, following a corner, the Newcastle goalkeeper parrying the ball away.

“I think this is the next step we have to go in such tight games. We have to be more clinical in those moments. It was our third game in a week where we were investing a lot, it’s normal that our concentration wasn’t the highest after such moments. But in that moment, you must know that this can decide the game. When you are 1-0 up, then you must take something here.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

Potentially emerging as Fantasy differential in recent weeks is Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) who scored his third goal in as many matches against Southampton.

While there was controversy about his effort at Sheffield United midweek, there was none as he headed Newcastle level on Sunday afternoon.

Shelvey now has three Premier League goals in as many matches

The Magpies midfielder is arguably showing plenty of versatility in terms of how he’s grabbing his goals right now.

Against Manchester City, he smashed home a powerful pile-driver from distance, at Bramall Lane, he was the one running beyond the centre-forward in order to get clear on goal and on Sunday afternoon Shelvey displayed his aerial abilities.

His free-kick into the box was cleared to the right flank where Andy Carroll (£5.4m) collected the ball and lofted a cross back into the box which Shelvey nodded beyond Alex McCarthy (£4.3m).

If Shelvey can continue to establish himself as a source of attacking returns in the Newcastle squad, that could be of interest to Fantasy managers.

Fernández was the latest Newcastle defender to further their goal-tally

Thus far, offensive options have not shown much reliable form for Steve Bruce’s side, most of the goals coming from a collection of defensive assets.

Shelvey is now clear as the top goalscorer for Newcastle players this season but, prior to Gameweek 14, he was level with two other players, both of whom were defenders.

As things stand, Ciaran Clark (£4.3m), Fernández and Willems are joint-second on two goals each, with the former Swansea man adding to his total against Southampton.

Below them, Fabian Schär (£5.0m), Jamaal Lascelles (£4.3m), DeAndre Yedlin (£4.4m), Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m) and Joelinton (£5.6m) are all tied on one Premier League goal each.

Either way, it is clear that Shelvey presents the only remotely viable route into Newcastle’s attack this season.

Newcastle could miss Saint-Maximin’s pace if he is out for an extended period

That said, Newcastle could seriously miss the pace and power of Saint-Maximin as he came off with a suspected hamstring issue against Southampton.

The winger was taken off with an ankle problem at Bramall Lane and manager Bruce admitted after the latest win that he regretted not benching him in order to preserve his fitness ahead of a busy schedule.

“We don’t know how serious it is. I will kick myself if he is out for a long time. He is that maverick free spirit we have to manage. He wanted to play, to be fair to him. He had a nasty ankle the other night and was hobbling around, but when he pulls up the way he did, then we all fear the worst and that is the downside of playing somebody tired.” – Steve Bruce

Going into Gameweek 17, Newcastle have one of the more favourable runs of fixtures from a defensive perspective, especially as they meet Burnley and Crystal Palace in their next two matches.

However, whether or not they can be trusted with defensive investment remains to be seen as they still have just one clean sheet from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Willems, Dummett, Clark (Schär 46′), Fernández, Manquillo; Saint-Maximin, Shelvey, Hayden, Almirón (S Longstaff 85′); Joelinton (Carroll 59′).

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Bertrand, Bednarek, J Stephens, Cédric; Redmond, Højbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Djenepo (Boufal 73′); Ings (Adams 88′), S Long.

If Pulisic get 90min today would you swap him for Alli? Have Son and Abraham.

If it's for a hit, it's different, I wouldn't burn points ahead of a game against Bournemouth at home.

I don't see it that way. This match and saturday are both must win for chelsea. Today and satruday he will play his strongest squad.

    1) Jimenez, Tielemans > Ings, Maddison
    2) Jimenez, Tielemans > Rashford, Shelvey
    3) Pope, Cantwell > Guaita, Donck
    4) Jim, Tiel, Aurier > Mousset, Son, fodder (-4)

Already have: Vardy, Tammy; Alli, Mane, KDB

Can you just do pope>guita and risk cantwell for one week? Then you can use a double FT to upgrade him or something

wanted to do KDB, Greenwood > Rashford, Grealish next week to have sufficient cover for the blank but since KDB fell and Rashford and Grealish are both set to rise I will no longer be able to afford it. My other move I would have liked to make will also be priced out by 0.1... Ughh, why's everyone gotta be getting in grealish this week and selling KDB vs Arsenal 🙁

Not this week tho as I think I would rather have KDB vs arsenal than rashford vs everton and grealish would be benched anyways most likely for me, plus it would be for a hit. Next week makes so much sense tho coz I can play Grealish, bench Mane and Trent and field 11 decent players. Plus KDB has LEI. And it would be for free. So annoyed coz it was the plan I'd had in my head for a while and I had 0.3 spare at the start of the week but now going to be 0.1 short by the time the deadline roles around. :/

Mark still owning Sterling and set to reap the rewards this game week. We all know Mark knows, its just a matter of time. So with that in mind Im considering the truly maverick Mane -> Sterling move in anticipation of the Liverpool blank and with Sterling facing an absolute garbage Arsenal side with a manager who thinks he can field 4 players without a single defensive fiber between them at once without being punished.

    Thoughts?

Good logic but can you trust Sterling

I would have thought for a 12m player the following would have been good points - 2,5,10,20,7,11
However those aren't someone points - their Sterling's recent BPS points

      1. Brosstan
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

I cant really trust Sterling, but the fact that Vardy will be the captain anyway makes me feel its less risky. Hes not THAT far behind Mane in actual points and the underlying stats are not conclusive in Mane's favor.

The opener about Mark is a joke but Im actually considering it. Sterling basically has 2 games to Mane's one. And Im on 2FTs with nothing I really want to do so might as well hokey cokey.

How much do you drop on Mane - I bought him late but would still have difficulty finding the extra 200K to buy him back

WC Draft #2 (for GW 18)

    Gazzaniga Martin
    Soyuncu Lundstram Maguire?! Rico Kelly
    Mane KdB Son Alli Dendoncker
    Vardy Rashford Abraham

It's not as mad you think. Plan is to roll transfer in 19. And then do Maguire > Evans for a Leicester double from GW20 onwards or like downgrade KdB or one of the spurs mids to fund Maguire > TAA.

Point is, Man Utd have the best defensive fixtures for GW 18, 19 with wat NEW. Okay, Aston Villa have SOU NOR but they're awful defensively.

WCing with future planned transfers at the time of year when games are every 2 or 3 days sounds like a risk - I would rather get all my ducks in a row from the off (which is why I am preferring the look of the GW20 WC option)

I don't like GW20 because you don't have enough time. It's underrated to have a whole week to chew the fat, plan out a team for the long term, get opinions analyze etc.

WC'ing in 18 gives me a whole week to explore options. Lets me prepare better for the Liverpool blank and how to navigate after that.

I see a lot of rushed wildcards from people who end up picking someone really random last minute because they didn't have time to mull over their team and consider how their structure will work.

Honestly, I feel like having time to plan is underrated. Thinking, exploring different options, having different drafts, getting opinions, analyzing some stats. Looking ahead for specific patterns of fixtures.

I always pick my own team in the end but having insights from reading articles, listening to the scoutcast, having discussions around the site etc. helps a lot. And I enjoy the process. It also gives you more time to catch price rises!

    1) KDB -> Son
    2) KDB -> Maddison
    3) Save

Save. People are going to regret selling KdB shortly. I'm telling you. The underlying fixtures are good, his stats are still fantastic.

      In fact, look at this:
KdB - LEI wol SHU EVE avl CRY shu
Mane - 0 lei WOL SHU tot MUN wol

I'd honestly say KdB is likely to score more than Mane over this stretch of fixtures taking into account Liverpool's fixture congestion and difficulty.

I would be really surprised if this happens, might not even get close to Mane's score.

You do know that KdB has only scored 12 fewer points than Mane right? People are so short-sighted.

wol, CHE, bha, nor, sou, LIV, wat, NOR ...looks pretty good for Son too
Swapped KDB for Son 3 weeks ago - 10,3,1 vs 10,2,12 ... so Son has a 10 point head start and that list of fixtures
        Doesn't look regrettable yet

    Would give me

    Taa soy Lund
    Mane kdb son grealish
    Vardy rashford Abraham

    Button kelly rico dendo

Rico to Simpson can fund the move next GW instead, still for the -4 but without losing Pulisic's Bournemouth fixture and without the price change anxiety

"Any player earning five bookings from his side's first 19 Premier League matches will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition. Players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their sides' 32nd fixture will serve a two-match suspension in the competition."
