Spot the Differential

Differentials emerging in defence ahead of Christmas period

Fantasy Premier League managers may find some interesting differential options in defence from Gameweek 17 onwards.

The last round of action saw a welcome return to form for a number of richly-owned offensive assets.

There were double-digit hauls for the likes of Harry Kane (£10.9m), Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), Mohamed Salah (£12.2m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and many of these could continue to set the agenda for premium spending over Christmas.

However, as always, five of the top 10 Gameweek 16 scorers were owned by 5% of Fantasy managers or less.

There is still plenty of budget value to capitalise on, especially among backline assets, which will be the focus of this latest Spot the Differential article.

Vicente Guaita

Price: £5.1m

Ownership: 2.1%

GW17 Opponent: Brighton and Hove Albion (home)

With three consecutive clean sheets in a row, it’s becoming hard to ignore Vicente Guaita (£5.1m) and the Crystal Palace defence.

Since Gameweek 14, no goalkeeper has scored as many Guaita, who has amassed 26 points, more than the 24 recorded by Vardy, over that period.

The Palace shot-stopper has been helped by a decent run of generous fixtures which continue to have appeal all the way up to New Year’s Day.

It seems surprising that more FPL managers own the injured Hugo Lloris (£5.3m) than Guaita, even though the injured Spurs man in 3.6%. But that just highlights the potential for differential gains that Guaita offers and I’d be surprised if his ownership did not rise between now and the beginning of 2020.

Perhaps the biggest concern with Crystal Palace is the injuries that are being picked up by their defenders recently, including Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m), Joel Ward (£4.4m) and Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) while Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) is suspended for the next two.

This may weaken them during the festive fixtures although ongoing defensive absences haven’t stopped them in recent outings.

Some might consider Kasper Schmeichel (£5.3m) for a little more of their budget given Leicester’s defensive form but he still has to face Manchester City and Liverpool in Gamweeks 18 and 19 respectively.

This weekend, Gutaita goes up against Palace’s rivals Brighton who have the seventh-worst away record in the league since August and only three teams have scored fewer goals on their travels since Gameweek 1 too.

Jonny Evans

Price: £5.2m

Ownership: 4.8%

GW17 Opponent: Norwich City (home)

After a fantastic run of form that has catapulted Leicester second place in the league, you would be forgiven to think that all of their defenders would be highly owned.

But despite being a regular starter for the Foxes, Jonny Evans (£5.2m) is still a de facto differential, sat in just 4.8% of teams.

It might seem strange that he hasn’t attracted more attention but up until very recently, Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.1m) was offering exactly the same as Evans but for much cheaper.

However, with their prices now similar, the former Manchester United man is starting to look more attractive.

He has scored 20 points over the last two Gameweeks and last weekend he had more penalty touches (four) than Kane (3), indicating that he can be a threat for the Foxes.

Leicester have kept five clean sheets in their last seven games and are more than capable of making it six from eight against a Norwich team with the worst away record in the league.

Bigger tests lie ahead after that, with a trip to the Etihad followed by hosting Liverpool on Boxing Day and it may be a tough ask for Leicester to hope for clean sheets in those matches.

But one thing is for certain, they are a completely different unit under Brendan Rodgers, both in defence and attack. Therefore, Evans is a viable long term pick if you don’t currently have anyone from the Leicester defence.

George Baldock

Price: £4.8m

Ownership: 5.0%

GW17 Opponent: Aston Villa (home)

If you missed out on the John Lundstram (£5.1m) bandwagon or are looking to double up on Sheffield United defensive assets then look no further than George Baldock (£4.8m).

In recent weeks, the right wing-back has shot up to fifth for FPL points scored among defenders. As things stand, Baldock has registered a higher season total than Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m).

Of course, his tally received a massive boost after he found the net and assisted against Norwich last Sunday, but he has actually outscored Lundstram by 34 points to 31 since Gameweek 11 anyway.

That said, Sheffield United’s lack of clean sheets of late is slightly problematic. Since Gameweek 9 they have only kept one and it’s somewhat surprising that they conceded three goals in their last two games, against Newcastle United and Norwich.

However, Baldock’s offensive potential combined with Aston Villa’s defensive problems could see him register more attacking returns.

If you've no other issues why not? Won't be a playing sub keeper for long though as Fabianski will probably return in January.

Better than having a non-starter (unless you have Ryan & Button) - might come in and if West Ham improve (unlikley) might even gain a bit of value.
Only minus is he might lose a bit of value when Fabianski comes back.

What we learnt in the runup to Gameweek 17…

    Liverpool

Lovren is out with a “more serious than last time” injury. “Virgil [Van Dijk], Joe [Gomez] and Sadio [Mane], they are all available as far as I know”.
    https://twitter.com/LynchStandard/status/1205481535706718218?s=20

    Leicester City

No new injuries for Leicester, as Rodgers categorically denied any players would leave in the January window.
    https://twitter.com/BBCRLSport/status/1205124494626623492?s=20

    Man City

Both Stones and Aguero are not training with the first team and so will miss the Arsenal game. David Silva is a doubt.
    https://twitter.com/jonnysmiffy/status/1205479015202664449?s=20

    Chelsea

Lampard mentioned that there will be “slightly” more midfield rotation coming up. Tomori is not fit for Saturday but should begin training next week.
    https://twitter.com/NizaarKinsella/status/1205485286748282880?s=20

    Man Utd

Lingard will face a late assessment to judge his fitness for the weekend as he wasn’t training on Thursday. Next week Bailly, Fosu-Mensah and probably Pogba will begin properly training.
    https://twitter.com/samuelluckhurst/status/1205427317314588673?s=20

    Wolves

All quiet from Wolves following their EL game, where they were able to rest a number of first team players. No new injuries are expected.

    Tottenham

Davies is travelling to Qatar to continue rehab for his ankle injury and will be out for 2/3 months. Winks is training with the squad. Lo Celso will not start on Sunday, Lamela is out for 2 months. Ndombele is also out but returning soon.
    https://twitter.com/jonathandveal83/status/1205476451308490754?s=20

    Sheffield Utd

No fresh injuries just some tired bodies for Wilder who confirmed Norwood came off to avoid a 5th booking, not due to fitness issues.
    https://twitter.com/JamesShield1/status/1205075950993580034?s=20

    Arsenal

Local press reporting that Bellerin isn’t expected to be fit for Sunday, but that it wasn’t certain yet. Similar to Wolves, no presser due to EL so very limited news that I’ve seen.
    https://twitter.com/jamesbenge/status/1205455642288443392?s=20

    Crystal Palace

Schlupp has been ruled out, as is Ward along with a unnamed list of others. There’s no return date for PVA and Sakho is still suspended.
    https://twitter.com/CPFC/status/1205112109991944192?s=20

    Newcastle

Shelvery and Almiron are doubts with muscle issues, will be assessed. Ki and Clark are out. Saint-Maximin is out. Lejeune will be back in the squad of 18 for Saturday.
    https://twitter.com/lee_ryder/status/1205419754116337666?s=20

    Brighton

Izquierdo has been back at home in Columbia as he prepares to return some time in January / February. No fresh injury concerns but Connolly is still a doubt. March is looking at a late December, early Jan return.
    https://twitter.com/AndyNaylorBHAFC/status/1205485722452578305?s=20

    Burnley

Barnes and Westwood trained today and Dyche is hopeful that they will be fit for the weekend. Bardsley might be able to train on Friday but Taylor is touch and go. Wood has a knock but should be OK, JBG will begin game training next week.
    https://twitter.com/adjones_journo/status/1205111266173472768?s=20

    Everton

Walcott is looking at a 3 week absence through injury and Schneirderlin will be missing for two weeks. Mina, Delph and Coleman are back in light training and Digne also trained today.
    https://twitter.com/Adam_Jones94/status/1205482781591117825?s=20

    Bournemouth

Long injury list. Ake is looking at 6 weeks out (conservative estimate, grade 2 hamstring). Adam Smith won’t need surgery so is looking at 6 weeks instead of 12. Wilson does not have a serious injury and should be back soon but King has a chance at featuring. Steve Cook will miss about a month.
    https://twitter.com/peterrutzler/status/1205416723312189440?s=20

    West Ham

Reid is back working without problems but Wilshere has some pain. No update on Cresswell but he has been seen training.
    https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/fixtures-results/every-word-manuel-pellegrini-said-17407550

    Aston Villa

Targett is back training and available after going off injured last weekend, but Mings is out. Dean Smith hopes to have him back soon.
    https://twitter.com/mjmarr_star/status/1205428683256844289?s=20

    Southampton

Valery has been out with a virus and will miss out this weekend yet again. Armstrong is training however so will be an option, but Boufal is still struggling with pain from the table so will be a sub at best.
    https://twitter.com/SaintsfcViews/status/1205082748068728833?s=20

    Norwich

Hanley is back in training but won’t be available quite yet – he should return for the festive games. There are no new injuries.
    https://twitter.com/davefreezer/status/1205476888996700160?s=20

    Watford

Dawson will be available for the weekend, whilst Pereyra will be touch and go and will be reviewed like Masina. Holebas, however, will be out.

    1) anyone tempted to get rid of mane next week for a couple of gameweeks?
    2) Do you think his price will go down to 12.2?

If I sell him i'll lose on 0.2 but then if he drops in price due to blank gameweek+"tough" fixtures I'll only lose 0.1

but did they fall in price even if it is 0.1? I only care about a drop in price so that I can rebuy him again if I sell him. Mane's next two fixtures are BLANK and Leicester away...

    Hi guys!
According to you, would it be wise to sell TAA after GW17 in order to free up funds to get Son or Alli? He blanks GW18, has 4 yellow cards and bad fixtures with Leicester, Spurs and ManU in the next five...

Looking at it to free funds for keeper upgrade in 19/20. Don’t see Trent as that great value short to midterm and wonder if Pereira will turn out to be the winner of top scoring defender of season

My alternative is KdB to Alli which looks more likely for points gains in 18 but perhaps less attractive as a midterm move (already have Son)

    Mane, KDB, Son, Tielemans
    Vardy (VC), Rashford, Jimenez
    Bench: Button, Dendoncker, Rico, Tomori
    1 FT and £3.0m ITB
I think any transfers should be focused on Tomori, Rico and/or Tielemans. What to do on a 3 week view? I still have my wildcard so will be using that before GW20...
    A) Tomori/Rico to TAA/Robertson/Targett
    B) Tielemans to Pulisic/Alli/Grealish/Martial

if you can guarantee your transfer generates you a clean sheet then go for it. Otherwise, prob just start Rico

    2. Dr. Mantis Toboggan
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

Hmm, if you can find a decent medium term option I reckon it's worthwhile.

Rico is likely a 1 or 0 this week, and presumably you'd have to play Tomori next week who (if he even plays) has a bad fixture. Not hard to earn back the hit over two weeks, so if it sets your defence well after that you're laughing

    3. Vlad Tepes
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

Ye will think of that, maybe get a palace defender in but not that sure they will get a cs against Brighton. Rico will prob get 0 or 1p I agree on that.
