Fifth of top 10k FPL managers yet to play first Wildcard

Roughly a fifth of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers are yet to use their first Wildcard.

Time is running out to deploy this chip as it is only active for the next three Gameweeks, disappearing after Gameweek 20.

Following the passing of Saturday’s deadline for Gameweek 17, 81.09% of the top 10k had played their Wildcard.

As you can see from the table above, 0.87% of them played the Wildcard for Gameweek 17, taking the overall total for the top 10k to 81.09%.

That means 18.9% of managers at this level still have it in their pocket, ready to deploy over the Christmas period.

Our ProPundit writer Simon March did an article earlier this week on the pros and cons of using the Wildcard later in the season and is certainly an interesting read. READ IT HERE.

Those that do deploy their Wildcard between now and the end of the year may well end up with squads that look a bit like the above.

This is the template Wildcard put together by those using it for Gameweek 17.

As you can see, the Brighton double-up between the sticks is the most-popular goalkeeper combination, featuring Mat Ryan (£4.8m) and David Button (£4.0m).

The most fashionable defenders in these select squads match the quintet considered the best by the majority of top 10k managers.

John Lundstram (£5.1m), Martin Kelly (£4.3m), Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.1m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m) are all the top five most popular defenders both for the top 10k generally, and those who Wildcarded for Gameweek 17 – in the same order as well.

There is some disparity in midfield though.

Sadio Mané (£12.3m), who assisted and had a headed goal ruled out for offside in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday, is the most popular in both sets, in 87.4% of Wildcard squads and 85.8% of top 10k squads.

By contrast, Mohamed Salah (£12.2m), who has double-figure hauls in each of his last two Premier League outings, is only in 16.8% of top 10k squads, suggesting he can act as a powerful differential at this level from Gameweek 19 onwards, as Liverpool are without a fixture in Gameweek 18.

While James Maddison (£7.8m) is in 59.6% of top 10k squads for Gameweek 17, he is in 71.3% of the Wildcard squads at this level, indicating how popular he is.

The Wildcard users have also taken the opportunity to invest in the Spurs midfield double-up too, with considerably more vigour than the rest of the top 10k.

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Dele Alli (£8.7m) are in 56.3% and 42.5% of Wildcard squads at this level but are only in 51.8% and 34.7% respectively in normal top 10k teams.

The true power of these players for those further down the rankings is shown by how few managers own Son and Alli overall. As things stand, their worldwide ownership figures are 21.0% and 12.5% respectively.

Meanwhile, if Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m) manages to return to usual FPL form against Arsenal’s then he could help arrest a slew of sales.

He may still be in 60% of top 10k squads but that number has been falling each week for some time now.

Furthermore, the Manchester City midfielder has been selected by just 37.9% of top 10k managers playing their Wildcard for Gameweek 17.

So far, it has been a disappointing Gameweek for the in vogue forward line of Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.0m).

The Leicester City forward was handed an overwhelming majority for the Gameweek 17 captaincy, with 71.2% backing for it among the top 10k, but arguably failed to fully deliver on his promise.

Despite finishing the match at the King Power Stadium with more shots on target than any other player, Vardy did not find the net officially.

He was initially awarded the goal for Leicester’s equaliser but was shortly after stripped of it, Tim Krul (£4.5m), quite rightly, accredited with an own-goal instead.

Meanwhile, Mané (backed by 18.6%) came in as a distant second, managing to outscore Vardy by one point.

As already mentioned, Salah’s big haul against Watford was especially powerful for those who captained him.

With the vast majority of top 10k managers getting 10 points for Vardy, a 32-point haul for the Egyptian will surely have propelled the 4.5% who captained him into the highest reaches.

As for the rest of the popular forward line, Abraham blanked in a surprise defeat to Bournemouth while Rashford awaits his owners in a meeting with Everton on Sunday afternoon.

A final word on the chips as 2.6% of the top 10 deployed the Triple Captain for Gameweek 17.

Our Scoutcaster and ProPundit Az also pulled the trigger for his enhanced armband.

Like many of those in the top 10k, the chosen recipient was Vardy, and, chances are, his Triple Captain backers were expecting a lot more than one assist against Norwich.

    Would you rather :
    A: sell Salah and Mount for KdB and Martial and bench Tomori and Nakamba or

    B:sell Maddison and Mount for Martial and McGinn and play one of the Tomori/Nakamba.

    P.S. i dont have Mane and if i rid Salah i will want him again soon.

    Have Vardy and Soy from Leicester

    Team as it stands for GW18
    Pope (Button)
    Lundstram Rico Kelly (Soy, Robertson)
    Son, Maddison, Pulisic, Traore (Mane)
    Vardy, Tammy, Rashford

    Still have WC intact, planning to use in GW19 or 20
    Not super happy with how the team looks for GW18, major concerns being the defense, Pulisic (out of form, tough fixture), and Traore
    With 1FT and 1.0 ITB, my options are:
    A) Traore -> Grealish
    B) Robertson + Traore -> Baldock/Willems + Richarlison -4
    C) Robertson + Pulisic -> Baldock/Willems + Alli -4
    D) Pulisic -> Richarlison
    E) Something else

          I'd actually probably play WC in GW20 for after Liverpool vs Leicester. Reason I don't want to play WC now is if I made a team for GW18 the team structure would be very different to how I want my team to look in the medium-long term, due to the liverpool blank and tough fixtures for Spurs, Chelsea, City and Leicester assets

            You're thinking about it wrong. If you WC the team you want for GW19 right now will it outscore your current GW18 team?

            In most cases I think it will, especially if you've got dead wood like Pulisic and Tielemans like I do 😀

              Those WCing GW20 will almost certainly have triple Leicester and Liverpool. Not sure much points are to be had in all likelihood for these players in GW18 or 19.

      defense should be okay - I'm on Lunds, Rico, Willems (Pereira, Robertson) ...
      If you are going to use your WC later then I would see a non-playing player, not Pulisic
      Robertson could go down tomorrow, so you may want to take profit on him before he drops and punt on another defender

      Just one of those days for him. He looked well up for it...and with some luck it could have been a good day for TC’ers...

      I don’t understand why folk TC a player that is highly fancied as captain on any given week anyway...it dilutes the effect of a good TC pick. Surely the right time to play it is when their is a split captain vote several ways and hope you get the right one.

          Playing a TC on a player in week when everybody else has captained the same player is absolutely not the right way to use that chip. It just isn’t.

          I might agree with you if it was used on somebody like Salah this week...or a lower placed (c) pick in other weeks....

    Very tempting to free hit. Have triple liv so no bench and don't really fancy any of my players to haul, even Lundstram is a bit meh, he's not had an way clean sheet for 4 games, in fact he only has one attacking return away from home all season. Loads of us must have a similar problem.

    Free hit team would look something like this;

    DDG
    Willems Targett Doherty
    Son Martial Grealish Richarlison
    Jiminez Rashford Aguero

    Patricio Zaha Guilbert Aurier

    This feels like a great chance to smash the average

      Dont free hit!!! Its good for double gw

        Free hit is probably the best chip in the game. Don't waste it on a gw where 2 teams blank

    Hi fellas, help me out with this bunch

    Guaita
    Lundstrom Maguire Aurier (Soy TAA)
    Alli Son Maddison Cantwell (Mane)
    Maupay Tammy Vardy

    Got 2 FT. Which move makes more sense?

    A) Maguire + Cantwell > Cahill + Grealish
    B) Mane > Grealish and roll 1FT
    C) Tammy + Mane > Rashford + Grealish

    If Maguire fails to deliver tomorrow will probably do A. Thoughts?

    Ryan Button
    TAA Söy Lund Rico Tomori
    KDB Mane Son Pulisic Cantwell
    Vardy Abraham Ings
    2ft.
    Mane and Tomori to Alli and Doherty?
    WC gw 20 or would you rather WC now?
    Pulisic I also wanna get rid of sooner than later.

    Team not great for next gw but got 2FT. First thoughts are Mount, Mousset/Connolly and TAA out?

    Hendo
    Perreira Lund Rico Kelly
    KDB Mount Alli Son
    Vardy Mousset
    (Martin, Connolly, Mane, TAA)

      Different approach to most, having 4 big mids and only 1 big forward. Mount to Grealish would be my move.

        Yup, doing me decent so far but tempted to bring in Kane or Rash if they do well today. Not sold on villa after today

        Might keep due to next 2 fixtures tbh but most players got a difficult fixture this gw and quite sold on getting rid of TAA for 3/4 gws atleast

    Just need Rashford to score a hat trick, Alli and KDB to haul and Kelly to get a clean sheet and GW saved 🙂

    A. Pulisic -> Martial for exact
    B. Save FT and do Pulisic + someone -> Alli next week

    What would you do with this bunch of stragglers?
    A. Robbo + Pulisic to Dunk + Son
    B. Taa + Robbo + Pulisic to Aurier + Maguire + Son (-4) (1.5itb)
    C. Robbo + Mane + Pulisic to Aurier + Son + KDB (-4) (1.4itb)
    D. Other

    Pope
    Trent / Robbo / Lord
    Mane / Alli / Pulisic / Zaha
    Ma(C)hine / Rashford / Jimenez
    (Henderson, Kelly, McGinn, Rico)
    2FT
    0.3

        Your team looks in decent shape if you want to hold LIV assets, Mount out and save second FT prob a good move. Wait til today's games finish and reassess.

      KDB and Pulisic to Son and Richarlison. No point to bring in Salah for a hit when he's not even playing in GW18. If you still want him you can bring him in next week.

        Yeah Salah is more of a plan across 2 weeks. Just thinking if is worth doubling up with Mane or swap with him for a more differential approach.

    Hi guys, looking for some advice on some transfers for a 2 week punt (will WC before GW20). Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

    Pope, 4.0
    TAA, Chilwell, Lund, Lowton, Targett
    Salah, Alli, Madds, KDB, Cantwell
    Ings, Vardy, Rash

    0.2 ITB, 2FT

    a) Salah, Madds & Cantwell -> Son, Martial & Grealish (-4)
    b) Salah & Madds -> Son & Martial
    c) Salah & Cantwell -> Son & Grealish
    d) Salah & Lowton -> Son & Aurier
    e) Something else? Any other players I should be looking at?

    Thanks!

      Probably D because defence is your weak spot next week, with TAA blank and Lowton not nailed. With your current team you'd have to start Chilwell away to MCI, which is certainly not ideal.

      wait till Sours play, unless you have no cash buffer

      Aurier could get injured or receive a red card and then you are in the schtuck
