Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 19?

Gameweek 19 provides Fantasy Premier League managers with another chance to make huge ground with a differential captain option.

Boxing Day is set to be another matchday with no obvious standout captain in the Fantasy community – perfect for those hoping to soar up the rankings.

As ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you make the right choice for your team as we compare the best candidates with the defences of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up to monthly or season-long packages can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Harry Kane (£11.0m) heads into Boxing Day with an incredibly slender lead in the captain poll, having accrued the backing of 16.9% of the vote.

Spurs may be hosting a Brighton side that has struggled on the road this season but Kane himself does have four blanks in his last five matches.

Another player who has disappointed his owners recently is Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) and yet he is the one fighting Kane for the Boxing Day captaincy.

It’s touch and go as of Christmas Eve morning, the Chelsea man backed by 16.3% of the voters despite him also blanking in four of his last five Premier League matches.

Frank Lampard’s men host Southampton on Boxing Day, who have not kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 5.

Dele Alli (£8.8m) is not far behind the top two as the votes are very much spread across a number of candidates for Gameweek 19.

The Tottenham midfielder, probably boosted by Son Heung-min‘s (£10.0m) red card against Chelsea, has been deemed the best Boxing Day captain by 14.1% of our voters. Despite a couple of blanks in a row, Alli is still averaging 6.8 points per game under Jose Mourinho.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.4m) heads up the best-of-the-rest section as far as the voting public are concerned, backed by 9.8%. The Belgian plays on Thursday evening as Manchester City travel to Molineux and has four attacking returns in his last two outings.

8.6% of the voters are still behind Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) despite his Gameweek 18 blank at Watford, considering he has still been involved in seven goals in as many matches.

Despite proving he really can score against anybody in Gameweek 18, Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) is very much a differential captain for Boxing Day.

The Leicester centre-forward scored his 17th goal of the season against Manchester City on Saturday and is now without a blank in 10 successive matches.

Sharing the pitch with Vardy on Boxing Day will be Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) who has double-digit hauls in each of his last two – although he is backed by just 5.51%.

Jack Grealish (£6.3m), John Lundstram (£5.2m), Sadio Mané (£12.2m), Teemu Pukki (£6.6m), Christian Pulisic (£7.3m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) are the only other options on more than 1% support.

Can't see him starting. Bench him. Villa's defense is terrible too so even more reason to play Cantwell.

Is anyone else finding FPL less fun/enjoyable this year?

I’m not exciting about owning any attacking players at all really...the only one who’s showing any consistency is Vardy.
All the others are underperforming, Kane, Auba, Aguero.
Even in midfield, no one is pulling up any trees, it seems whoever you own they’ll maybe have one good week in three, so you might as well stick with whoever you have and just ride it out.

All my transfer this season have been juggling my budget defenders around a fixture swing.

    Anyone having a different experience?

I’m having my best ever season but it’s sure been a boring one. The football has been boring to watch too. Really strange year of football so far

        • 9 Years

        Exactly this.
I’m floating between a 20k OR and 50k OR, depending on getting the captain pick correct.

Football has been boring, and the title is already done now, and probably so is the top four, so not sure how much more I’ll watch this season.

VAR has really ruined my enjoyment of football and FPL too

Vardy has been consistent for 12 weeks, the other two are in a purple patch right now, but it’ll end, just like Pukki, Wilson etc.

I did a quick calculation earlier.

If I had left my team as it was in the first gameweek, bar moving out an injured player, I would have 970 points.
      I am now on 1020.

So, yeah, lots of shuffling for 50 points really.

Gw20 WC proving to a tricky esp as I am finally on a good run. Would you remove any of them on WC if you bought them at their base price

    A: Rashford
    - bought at 8.4
    - 2 blanks but talisman, on pens, good stats, fixtures irrelevant as they better against better opposition
    - competitor: Tammy

    B: Ings
    - bought at 6m
    - Very high goal involvement
    - Tough fixtures but he has 3/4 home fixtures from gw20 and then another great run from gw25
    - Peers: Pukki, Maupay, Grealish

    C: Kelly
    - got at 4m
    - Ward should come back in a few weeks

I think I am def getting rid of C, really confused by A and B

Who would you play this GW?

    A) Pereira @LIV
    B) Kelly @WHU

I know i brough Kelly for those run of fixtures, but somehow doesnt seem right to bench the 2nd highest scoring defender in the game, playing for the best defensive team who has shipped only 5 goals in 9 home games so far!

Also i have a gut feeling that WHU will score and Pereira have about 10times higher attacking potential than Kelly.

Strugging with the cap this week and currently have it on Big Kev

I've managed to bottle tonnes of captains this season so I look forward to changing it the last min 😆

Have 1ft left and the cash to do Alli > Salah, giving me

    Guaita
    TAA Lundy Kelly
    Salah Mane KdB Maddison Grealish
    Vardy Tammy

Alli has decent fixtures but with Son out, idk. Salah in is tempting, but that Liverpool schedule is tough, and Klopp's rotation and game management has been on point

Holding the ft is good, but with quickfire games, the free transfers are coming in thick and fast, so spending the ft, with such a short time frame to get more transfers, might be less ballsy

    But yeah,

    Salah in for Alli?

    or bank the ft

I think your team looks good either way. Sure Salah is tempting, but having played 210 mins the last week scares me a bit... you can do it, if you’re able to bite the bullet if he’s rested. Spurs looked awful last game so I don’t know

      1. Clintymints

Yep the logic is the same, and it could be 50/50 I had a dire week this week so need a strong bounce back. I'd expect Salah to at least start and do well, but Leicester away isn't exactly the best fixture, especially compared to Alli's kind run

He is, but a solid 5+ points each week is pretty decent.

I've performed better with Jimi as 3rd striker, than having a big 5th mid
