Why I’m making a move for Adama Traore with an eye on Double Gameweek 24

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy looks at ways of funding a Liverpool triple-up ahead of Double Gameweek 24.

One step forward, two steps back. That’s the story of my Fantasy Premier League season so far.

The high of my captain Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) scoring in the 95th minute had set me up for jubilation on Saturday evening, only for the decision of not captaining Sadio Mané (£12.3m) or Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) to bring me crashing back to reality with yet another red arrow and a rank of 592,933.

What I’m finding is mistakes are bringing indecision. Selling Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) in Gameweek 18 turned out to be a huge error. Going into Gameweek 20 I decided to hold my transfers instead of taking a further hit to bring in the Liverpool right-back along with Anthony Martial (£7.9m). That turned out to be another mistake.

When things are going well it’s easy to feel like you’ll keep making the right decision; I find the opposite happens when things are going badly.

If I’d had three green arrows over Christmas I think I’d have already made my decision for Gameweek 21. Instead I sit here writing this wondering whether taking out Dele Alli (£8.9m) before Southampton is the right call. If I make that transfer who do I bring in? There’s Martial, which may mean losing Rashford later on to fund three Liverpool players, or I could just bring in Adama Traoré (£5.5m), who would make the money situation a lot easier.

Is this a case of overthinking or not thinking enough? Is Traoré really the answer? I’m not sure any more and the buzz of sugar from all of the Christmas chocolate and mince pies isn’t helping me think clearly.

I continue to look at my team on paper and am quite happy with it. There’s certainly a Liverpool defender-shaped hole which I’ll rectify soon but other than that, it looks good.

Two free transfers means I have to make a move this week though and with Mané my only Liverpool player, I have to think ahead to how I get two more – hence losing Alli this week.

I can’t watch many more Liverpool matches without owning Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool have a full-back who can pass like De Bruyne and it’s a difficult watch for a non-owner.

This is where Traoré comes in. He lets me get three Liverpool players in just three moves. Given that I can only triple captain one, I’m currently leaning towards double defence instead of attack as going for Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) would mean losing De Bruyne. I think fixtures from Gameweek 24 onwards make it viable but it’s still a tough call.

When you compare Martial and Traoré it doesn’t actually make for bad reading over the last four Gameweeks. The Wolves winger has created more chances and had more goal attempts, although not as many in the box. The quality of the assist potential looks good as well and it’s even better when you consider Wolves have played Spurs, Man City and Liverpool over those fixtures.

You’d expect Martial to continue to get the better chances in front of goal but the £2.4m difference cannot be ignored.

According to FPL, Traoré is the second-best midfielder in terms of value over the season (based on points per million) and that doesn’t take into account that he played some of the earlier matches at wing-back.

Given Wolves rested key players in Gameweek 20, I think Watford away might not be as bad a fixture as it may have looked since Nigel Pearson came in. With Newcastle and Southampton to follow, I think I’ve just about talked myself into buying Traoré.

That’s right, I’m going to buy Adama Traoré. At some point in May I’ll look back at where it all went wrong this season. There’s a few key talking points and this may well be one of them.

Best sub-5 replacement for Aurier in a couple of GWs?

    A) Dunk
    B) Willems
    C) Someone punty like Cresswell or Laschelles (if fit)

    Current backline:
    Guiata
    TAA Aurier Lund Soy Kelly

5 goals over 2.5 seasons isn't exactly prolific. He's tall and goes up for set pieces, still not really much of a threat.

If you mean after this one, Dunk, Holgate could be decent but Sidibe looks more tasty, Newcastle looks in shatter atm so will that affect them as it has to certain extent to Palace? West ham have some ok fixtures up to 25, then it goes bad, so either now or forget it imo. Fabianski in goal perhaps.

      With your current backline, Holgate.

After last week's rotation massacre, and the fact that neither of the Liv mids were rested (so one would expect a good chance of one of them giving way), I'm going to go with Vardy.

Cheers! Do you really think salah is worth over 12 if you won’t be captaining him? I feel like he’ll be offering poor value and will be hurting the rest of your team.

I don’t have the best tv so that might be why i think he hurts the rest of the team so much but i still don’t understand doubling up

I think it depends of your current team value. If you can afford Salah, Mane and everything, why not?

But it's no no for people under 106 in TV.

          I can afford this:

          McCarty

          TAA, Lundstram, Kelly/Rico/Kiko

          Salah, Mane, De Bruyne, Martial

          Vardy, Jiménez, Ings

          Subs: Cantwell, Rico/Kiko, Reid

if cap against spurs then Mané, since Aurier plays on his side
if United, then Salah, as Shaw on his side and Rashford cheats on his defensive duties
in double gw going for the one in form i guess

Thinking about these 2 options. Have Ings and Cantwell right now but want to ship out either 1 for a Wolves asset..

Cantwell will probably start depending on fixtures of my defenders.

        Rest of the team:

        Gazza
        TAA // Lunds // Soy
        KDB // Mane // Martial // Cantwell

      i´m not sure i would

Ings could be DCL for a while perhaps? Even Jota? traore has 29 points against City and 10 against Spurs, that´s half his points this season. That is a pattern, but he is in form so can positively break it but cantwell is somewhat cheaper, and Norwich got as good fixtures as Wolves when we look 8 weeks ahead. GW22 is a tough one, i can see.

        • 9 Years

Thanks for this! It looks like Traore is more like a punt and not much of an upgrade as compared to the cheaper Cantwell. I think it might be between Ings and Jimi for me. Jimi has good fixture and is well-rested for this GW so I'm swayed.

Thinking if he could match Robertson till the end of the season for 0.6 less.

Robertson could certainly get rested for a game or two.

He has higher ceiling though. Sort the defenders stat wise, he'll be 3/4 every list bar goal threat.

already matching him in fact. TAA with a slightly higher points pr million, Robertson and VVD is on par. Rotation kicks in and VVd suddenly looks like a good option, and TAA has to get someone to score those assists from set pieces and that is VVD.

No, if you listened to him he would have like to go Martial but did not go for it 2 weeks ago and since 0.2 off that move now he has to do something different and no need to be in that mood, last day of 2018 you should be in festive mood-)

looks an easy answer but don´t think it is. spurs can´t defend on their right hand side, and United home usually Liverpool scores in, it is at Old trafford liverpool struggles. Palace is the tightest of those 4 teams, Villa is the worst but Mané is on form while Sterling is cold like a turkey before new years eve

Yeah check out the Flappy/Hendo rotation:

BOU, WHM, EVE, DGW, BHA, BOU, BHA, SOU

Hendo is also a good hedge for any games where Lundy can’t make the XI

Fair enough. One slight hazard I foresee is when Lund gets a haul and you've opted to play TAA/Robbo/VVD. Could be painful because of The Lord's ownership.

It’s the single most dangerous thing about this setup

More dangerous than no Salah/Mané I believe

But Hendo will hopefully provide a degree of SU clean sheet coverage, and Lund is there for bench strength so may end up playing most weeks anyways if any of the XI are rotated

            So tempted

Many people in here says you can't have Salah, Mane, De Bruyne, Vardy and TAA in the same team. I think it depends of your current team value. If you can afford Salah, Mane and everything, why not?

But it's no no for people under 106 in TV.

    I can afford this:

    McCarty

    TAA, Lundstram, Kelly/Rico/Kiko

    Salah, Mane, De Bruyne, Martial

    Vardy, Jiménez, Ings

    Subs: Cantwell, Rico/Kiko, Reid

    1. bench boost for every gamew…

i don´t disagree on your stand, but Southampton both concedes and MC does not make any saves, so you will lose many points on your goalie vs Fab and co, your defence, well, is that Reid or Kelly? You have listed reid under subs, while yo have Kelly in the team? Either way, that´s a player that either not playing or a player that soon will be bench player. Then you have to play 2 from Rico/femenia/Lund every week, Rico plays for Bou who will concede in every match from here to eternity, Watford got a ok program and Lund got some tricky one. And you have no wiggle room to get to a 4-5 or above defender, Sidibe, Chilwell, Dunk, this kind of defensive assets is not only going to punish you but also in a bracket that it will be easier to move to if you have one of them.
