Everton assets on the FPL radar following Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman, takes a closer look at how Everton assets are shaping up under Carlo Ancelotti.

Gameweek 20 has drawn to a close and went pretty well for me after I activated my Wildcard, which I left until the last possible week.

A total of 66 points has seen my overall rank rise to 36,928, which is just 26 points off the top 10k.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5) was the star of the show but there were also returns for six others, including Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m), who has really flourished since Nigel Pearson took charge. In fact, looking at data from Gameweek 17-20, only Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) has taken more shots in the box than Sarr, amongst midfielders.

Looking ahead, Everton are a team on my radar, with fixtures turning in Gameweek 22.

In just two matches, new head coach Carlo Ancelotti has installed a more adventurous brand of football, with real attacking intent.

Against Newcastle, The Toffees had an impressive 22 shots, nine of which were on target.

Caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson had successfully used a 4-4-2 for his few games in charge, whilst Ancelotti primarily used variations of a 4-4-2 at Napoli, so continuing with this shape, with limited time to work on tactics, made absolute sense – though he has added his own twist, which sees it transform into something resembling a 3-5-2 when in possession, with Lucas Digne (£5.9m) pushing high on the left.

With five goals in his last five league games, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.8m) is a player near the top of my Watchlist. After being praised by Ancelotti after scoring the winner against Burnley, he took on the manager’s encouragement by scoring two classic poacher goals against Newcastle United, whilst also creating five chances.

A quick look at Calvert-Lewin’s shot locations over the last two Gameweeks tells us he’s getting quality chances, close to goal.

Defensively, work still needs to be done – not surprising when Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) and Tom Davies (£5.3m) are your central midfielders in a 4-4-2.

Despite this, Djibril Sidibé’s (£5.3m) inclusion as a wide midfielder, rather than full-back, against Burnley was interesting, and something I’m monitoring.

These quotes from Ancelotti, where he discusses the Frenchman’s role after the game, tells us more:

Offensively, he stayed wide. On the other side we had Digne to cover the space there. Defensively (Sidibe) was working in the line of the midfielders, and the 4-4-2 shape, defensively, didn’t change. We tried to build up with Coleman a little bit back, and Sidibe more forward. It went well because he put the cross in for Calvert-Lewin to score the goal.

It’s early days for Ancelotti at Everton but it has been an exciting start.

Also, a quick word on Manchester City, who switched things up in the second half against Sheffield United, and were much improved.

De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) played in a double pivot, with Rodri (£5.4m) dropping back and forming a three-man defence with Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Eric Garcia (£4.5m), when in possession.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) moved inside as a number 10, whilst the full-backs were given more license to attack.

How Pep Guardiola sets up going forward is impossible to predict, but that Aston Villa fixture in Gameweek 22 could be one to target.

As focus turns to New Year’s Day and Gameweek 21, here is how I’m currently set up.

If John Lundstram (£5.2m) is passed fit, I’ll likely roll a transfer, which gives me a bit more flexibility if I want to bring in one or two Everton assets next week.

In terms of captaincy, I’m currently on Jamie Vardy (£10.1m). I have fond memories of captaining him in the reverse fixture back in Gameweek 7 and, with Leicester City resting nine players against West Ham United, a fresh starting XI including Vardy will hopefully be set to profit.

Thanks for reading… until next time.

Tom Freeman – aka avfc82 – comes onto the team to make most of us feel wildly insecure about our overall rank history. A long-time Fantasy Football Scout user, he has finished inside the top 1,000 a staggering five times since 2009.

A question for the old timers like myself. With the decade closing and team of the decade picks flying around everywhere whether for clubs or leagues, it is time for an FPL team of the decade. Who would make the cut in your team. Here is mine:

    Fabianski

    Ivanovic
    Baines
    Alonso/TAA

    Sanchez
    Hazard
    Salah
    Siggurdson/D.Silva

    Kane
    Aguero
    RVP

Some big names have missed out like Suarez. To justify that, here are top scorers of the decade. Aguero and Kane have to be there for me. The third spot was tricky but I opted for RVP in the end.

    Sergio Aguero 174
    Harry Kane 136
    Wayne Rooney 114
    Romelu Lukaku 113
    Robin van Persie 98

Suarez reason is not justified, he hasn't spent as many years in the prem as someone like Kane for example

Rooney over RVP though? RVP has been absolutely essential for 3 seasons in a row. Last 2 at Arsenal and his first at Man Utd. He was unstoppable. Perma-captain material. Rooney was playing CDM for his last 2 or 3 seasons. But earlier in the decade he was massive. Both great picks tbh and you can make a case for both.

I am not saying he is the best GK in football terms. But in terms of fpl the man has been a legend no matter what club he played for year after year. You have to factor in save points, his budget price and baps appeal when you have judge from fpl perspective.

I forgot Baines yeah. I'd have him over Alonso and maybe TAA. I like most of your picks except for the keepers. I don't remember Hart or Ederson were ever being good value or that highly owned. Not enough save points or bonus and with a premium-ish price.

Hart returned scores of 175, 166 and 158 during the decade.
No other goalkeeper beat 150 more than twice.
The only others to beat 150 twice according to my records were Ederson (159 & 169), Cech (158 & 159) and Fabianski (151 & 157).
My team is based on the numbers of high scores, rather than on value.

Ronaldo's last Premier League season was back in 2008/09.
        Henry's was in 2006/07.
Drogba scored 242 in 2009/10, but his only 150+ FPL score in the decade just ending was 176 in 2010/11.
Lampard scored 284 in 2009/10, but his only FPL score of 150 or more in the decade just ending was 150 in 2012/13.
        Terry is in my selection.
Michu had only one strong FPL season in the decade (190 in 2012/13), but Vidic and Barry never even reached 150 in a season (or if they did then their ppgs were not that high).

I think like Lampard, his best years are 2005-2010 period. In this decade, his output dipped. I like Sterling or Sanchez more.

Gerrard still achieved scores of 159, 185 and 205 during the decade.
            That compares with 184, 147, 148, 191 and 169 for D.Silva, 207, 167 and 264 for Sanchez, and 158, 229 and 294 for Sterling.
So Gerrard probably rates behind Sanchez and Sterling, but not so easy to decide where D.Silva ranks in the top seven.

Lampard's best years were in the previous decade.

      Spot on!
This is a very good list.

I would add Suarez just cause of how dominant he was that season. True he hasn’t been here for most of the decade but dang! He was unplayable while he was.

Terry and Ivanović are interchangeable. I have a soft spot for ivanovic so I’d pick him.

A lot of names people are throwing about were around for maybe 2-3 years in the decade. Kdb can oust any of the 4 consistent performers in your list yet. No doubt in another 2 years he would surpass them all.

I’d give a shout for de gea as the second gk. For a few seasons there he was exceptional.

Went for a few differentials and cheaper options like Michu and 15/16 Mahrez/Vardy double up to possibly keep it somewhere within sight of possible budget. And though his reign has been but brief, 3rd on the bench has honorably been donated to Lord in recognition of his contributions.

      DDG (Fabianski)
      Baines, TAA, Alonso (Coleman, Lundstram)
      Yaya, Mahrez, Silva, Salah (Michu)
      Kane, Kun, Vardy

Agreed, bit I went with a few cheapies and/or cult heroes to try to make the hypothetical team budget friendly.

Going on consistency, the likes of KdB, Sanchez, Rooney, Ivanovich etc would be certainly in the mix for me too.

If you’ve got TAA then you need KDB.

Rooney might have a strong case over RVP/Kane, but can see why both were included.

Fabianski I’m not sure about. DDG was incredible FPL wise for 3 straight seasons set and forget.

Same decision! Currently on Jamie but KDB has been great for me last couple and I expect him to play the majority of this match despite having played 90, he’s just too important to their attack atm.

Yeah I've missed out on captaining his hauls the last few weeks, had the armband on him all week and anytime i change it it usually backfires! You'd have to imagine Vardy is guaranteed to start too though. Agree with KDB being city's fulcrum, this one could go to 11.29am tomorrow 🙂

I cant remember and may be totally wrong, but Newcastle have good home stats, only in 2 games they conceded more than 2 goals or something? IDK theres some stat and its bad.
But then you havew to take into account the baby and Jamie wanting to do rocking the baby celebration, so his odds go up slightly.

Now im at the point of, might as well let my GF pick my team 😀

In fact it’s worse. Only in 2 games have they conceded more than 1 at home: to MCI in GW14 (2-2) and to EVE in GW20 (1-2).

I think this is why I am slowly edging towards another shot at KDB (C) (with Vardy vc ofc)

The way I see it, I don’t think either will mega-haul so it can’t go massively wrong as long as have plenty of other points scorers!

I have KDB, Vardy, Mané, Alli, Martial to choose from so hopefully will help cushion the pain!

Yeah in the last 5 games at home they've only conceded 2 goals twice, they play deep too, although they seem to have a few injuries to contend with this week. I can see Vardy doing that celebration all the same, just a matter of will KDB get more points. I've already tried getting the missus to pick between two names for the captain last week, didn't work

I feel like Leicester have a huge advantage having just rested 9 players when most other teams had to play their best XI. So not just Vardy, but the whole team is fresh.

Definitely a factor but with the bit between their teeth and KDB in the form he’s in and at his fitness level I don’t expect him to be fazed with having just played. The fact that EVE are starting to play better attacking football could play to MCI advantage also.

I see FFS are suggesting Jesus starts up front for City, am I wrong in believing Auguero more likely to start with only one run out to his name of late, and surely favoured by Pep. As an Aguero owner and potential (c) I'm a little concerned. KdB is the obvious VC but can see him being rested to the bench

        1. Aubameyang (cry, SHU) & Sarr (bou, TOT)
        2. Aguero (avl, CRY) & A.Traore (NEW, sou)

        Who to captain:

        1. Vardy
        2. Mane
        3. KdB
        4. Kane

KdB has 2 blanks at home this season and 9.4 PPM.
Mane also has 2 blanks at home but 8.4 PPM.
Vardy has no blanks away from home outside teams in top 6 with 8.2 PPM.

Thoughts? Tbh I'm leaning towards Vardy or KdB... Someone convince me!

I think KdB will start and most likely play 90. That being said, should I go with Kev?

Play Greenwood (ars) in the hope of a start or appearance with a goal, or play Rico (whu) ?

        1. Greenwood
        2. Rico

        Thanks

Captain Vardy over Salah, simply for the "Bebeto moment"?

Surely Jamie playing at New Year with a new baby is absolutely set up for him to have rocking celebration.
