Arteta’s Arsenal show signs of defensive improvement in United victory

Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United

  • Goals: Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m), Sokratis (£4.9m)
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Sokratis x3, Bernd Leno (£5.0m) x2, Pepe x1

Earlier this week we wrote about the green shoots of recovery shown by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in their defeat to Chelsea.

There was further encouragement on New Year’s Day, with the Gunners deserved winners over the Jekyll-and-Hyde outfit that is Manchester United.

The matches in Gameweeks 20 and 21 followed a similar pattern, with the difference this time being that Arsenal had established a more comfortable two-goal cushion by the time their energy levels were depleted.

The north London side look much hungrier under their new head coach, with their all-action, high-pressing approach clearly borrowed from the Manchester City playbook.

It’ll take a while for Arteta to fully get his methods across to this Arsenal squad, who are, by their own admission, not fit enough to carry out their manager’s demanding gameplan for a full 90 minutes.

The Gunners were gasping for air in the second half, with a flagging Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) pleading to be substituted and Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) scoffing an energy bar as his own limbs seized up.

Interviewed after the game, David Luiz (£5.7m) said:

We have to be honest and admit physically we are not ready, but you have to show heart and this team is ready to change a lot of things.

Arteta himself added:

That wasn’t the plan [to sit back in the second half], I have to admit, but at the moment we are suffering a little bit to maintain the intensity we had in the first half. I think it will come, it is part of the process, the way we train, but at the moment we don’t have much time to do so.

It might be that we don’t really see the fruits of Arteta’s labour until 2020/21, then, after the Gunners have had a full, intensive pre-season under their new boss.

The impact has been immediate, though, and Fantasy managers will be watching with interest ahead of some appealing fixtures for the Gunners in Gameweeks 25-32.

We FPL bosses have largely dodged the Arsenal defence for a while now but it is at the back where the Gunners look most improved, with the sight of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) diligently covering his left-back and even Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) tracking back from the number ten role summing up the collective approach to defending.

It was only an error from Bernd Leno (£5.0m) that let Chelsea back into the game last Sunday and, with the Gunners not shooting themselves in the foot this time around, United never seriously looked like getting back into the game.

Names we have all smirked at over the past couple of years – Luiz, Sokratis (£4.9m), Sead Kolasinac (£5.2m) and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m) – were all superb at the back, with Torreira and Granit Xhaka (£5.1m) covering expertly in front of them.

Carry on like this and we may even have to start considering them for the weeks and months ahead.

Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m) was named in the starting XI for the first time by Arteta, impressing down the right flank and opening the scoring when converting a deflected cross from Kolasinac.

Pepe later struck the upright and created chances for Lacazette, Aubameyang and Torreira in an eye-catching 62-minute showing.

Arsenal’s two premium FPL forwards contributed majorly to the cause without having too many sights of goal, with Lacazette screwing his best chance wide after making a fool out of Harry Maguire (£5.2m) and Aubameyang volleying his only shot of the game off-target.

Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) continues to sparkle in ‘the hole’, meanwhile, but there is a sense that he might not be the most explosive FPL asset in the mid-price midfield bracket, given that he’s had only one shot since Arteta took charge.

After back-to-back wins over Newcastle United and Burnley, the Red Devils treated us to one of their meek away-day specials at the Emirates.

For the money that we pay for the likes of Anthony Martial (£7.9m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) in FPL – not unsubstantial but hardly top-dollar, either – we have become accustomed to swallowing the occasional dismal display in the knowledge that a haul may be just around the corner.

United started the brighter of the two teams, with Rashford forcing Leno into a save early on, but a positive opening ten minutes gave way to a fairly poor performance, with Maguire’s close-range header on the stroke of half-time as close as the Red Devils came to finding a way past Leno.

Martial indeed didn’t have a single shot, while Rashford was wasteful and Daniel James (£6.1m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.3m) were anonymous as the United attack failed to click.

The likes of Maguire and Luke Shaw (£5.4m) were pretty ropey at the back, too, as they have been for much of 2019/20.

Still, bottom-of-the-table Norwich (who the Red Devils play next in the league) offer Rashford and co an immediate chance at redemption, just as Newcastle did after the Gameweek 18 loss to Watford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s troops will likely be without Paul Pogba (£8.4m) when they next play in the Premier League, with the United boss saying of the Frenchman in his post-match presser:

He’s injured now and he’ll probably need an operation on his foot. And let’s see how long it takes for him to get back.

We’ve had scans and while it’s nothing major, it’s something that has to be sorted and dealt with, within a timeframe. He’s been advised to do it as soon as possible.

It’s a big blow that Paul is out now – he’ll probably be out for three or four weeks – and Scott will be out for a few months. Scott has been magnificent and we hoped Paul could come back. He can’t – he’ll be back within a month or so.

On the injury front at Arsenal, Sokratis, Xhaka and Kolasinac were back in the starting XI after recent absences, although the latter seemed to aggravate his ankle problem before being substituted in the second half.

Dani Ceballos (£5.2m) was on the bench, too, but failed to get on.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac (Saka 69′); Torreira, Xhaka; Pepe (Nelson 63′), Ozil, Aubameyang; Lacazette (Guendouzi 82′).

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Matic (Mata 81′); James (Greenwood 59′), Lingard (Pereira 59′), Rashford; Martial.

Still can't believe I had Wickham off the bench lol. Been my 'fodder' all season long, always seemingly third sub.

A no show of Tomori/Vardy meaning he sweeps in later alongside Lundy. Ha!

    Anybody had anything similar?

I mentioned on the Scoutcast that this season has definitely been a season of having to change my opinion on certain players and not holding grudges/biases.

Around GW5 last year I went for Jimenez ahead of Danny Ings because of Ing's injury record but after scoring plenty and playing minutes in every game so far this season I went for Ings and have been reaping the rewards, especially as lots of FPL managers are still waiting for that injury record to flare up again.

Adama Traoré was always a player I thought was all pace and no end product but he's shown a big improvements playing in the front 3 for Wolves this season. At 4.2ppm he's higher than Tielemans, Mount, Dan James, Zaha, Trossard, Pepe, Gross, Moura - not bad for his price.

And now it looks like I'm going to have to change my opinion on Calvert-Lewin. Always listed as having good potential I didn't see him than much more of a target man that would attempt to bring other players into play.

Early days this season but he's looking like a target man that will also get into the right positions to poach goals and his shot volumes have been impressive recently. With confidence under Ancelotti and great fixtures to come I may have to forget my previous thoughts and get him in.

Are there any players that you've had to change your opinion on, or stop holding a grudge against? Do you find it difficult to change your opinion? We often hear about players that FPL managers will never bring in again no matter what.

It's taken me this long to bring in Ings having been too stubborn to bring him in earlier.

I also need to learn to ignore fixtures, many a times I've thought 'tough fixtures' it's a no go for then the player I was considering go and do a haul v a top side etc.

Its not easy to say who is knee jerk bandwagon and who is a real deal.
Thats why I try to play a bit safe with those kind of players like Walcott for example. How you dont know Traore or DCL arent next Wally?

Up side is I wont get burn by those players. For example I was thinking about Grealish > Traore this GW but that decide to play safe. Also Maddison > Martial looked tempting etc.
Downside is I waited with Ings a bit too long and got him in 2-3 GWs ago when I was sure its a real deal. I lost some points but got nice returns after I bought so quite happy in general.

When you have a player who is absolute disaster like Pulisic for example you can risk a bit and get Traore kind of player but most of the time I try to wait and see if he is real deal.

Hindsight's a bitch but the logic was there at the time, just annoyingly didn't work out! Going Zaha over Grealish is another (somewhat) failed punt for me but nothing will top Pulisic!

Actually the logic was not there. People simply looked at then fixtures and deemed him a good choice. Statistically across the last 2 seasons he's average 1.5 returns every 7 games and his stats are terrible this season (FPL wise, he's still a strong player). He's only scored more than 9 goals in a season once (10 goals) and relies on winning pens for assists. He's the typical example of good in real life but not in FPL and that was clear as day to anyone who looked

First time owning ings as he had 'hard fixtures'. Not keen on DCL yet, still thing Kean poises a threat and I know he can be quite unclinical. Couldn't even believe Lundstram so it took me a few weeks to get him in tbf but got the Lord in now 🙂

First one that springs to mind is Son, and from a negative view! I always thought he was a good FPL option. After being sent off for me twice in the short spells I owned him in 2019 I'm not sure I can ever go back!

My positive one is Mane, in particular Mane over Salah. I think we now live in a world where both are as good as each other. I'm currently on Salah.

Aguero! In all his PL years I've seemingly missed his massive hauls (Soton, Newcastle etc) so have subconsciously inbuilt a reflex to not own him...probably a bit like people used to with Hazard?

He's one of the most consistent strikers ever, can't imagine a string of blanks from him? Or are you just saying you've missed the mega hauls and maybe captained when he got injured (used to happen a lot back in the day)

Something I have observed this year, and it's not exactly revolutionary but it's helped me, is this.

If you look back over the last few seasons, the 'bandwagons' have been the guys who have always been on the scene, for at least 2-3 seasons or more, and flare up occasionally due to purple patches of form that could be put down to coincidence/extremely easy fixtures or injuries to rivals. These should generally be ignored because they have been around long enough for us to know their ceilings, both in terms of talent and fantasy points. We know that they are likely to revert to the mean and we know what that mean looks like from a fantasy perspective

If you see someone like Walcott, Benteke, Antonio even very "good" players such as Willian, Özil, and they embark upon a really good run of form, it is extremely likely that the form will not continue, because we know that they are operative at the maximum extent of their potential and probably don't have a lot more to give.

However when you get a player who is new to the league (e.g. Pukki), who has not been given a proper chance in the starting XI (probably not Jahanbakhsh but who knows), who is young and has just broken into the team (e.g. Abraham), or someone who has stabilised after injuries have interrupted their careers (e.g. Ings) then we don't know their limits. They could maintain that level of form, they could even do better. They have as much upside as the Walcotts of this world in terms of the stars aligning for a few weeks, with the additional advantages of future potential: we could get an extended run of points scoring and the returns could even increase.

Of course this is not foolproof, and the examples I pick out above are with the benefit of a huge amount of hindsight, but I think it's a useful rule of thumb when it comes to deciding who is a trap and who could be legit.

Sorry I should correct the first sentence of the second para - the bandwagons have *generally* been the established names. There are always new signings and young players who fade after strong starts or high-scoring runs too!

He's a good one! For me, Walcott is the classic but I have already mentioned him twice (now thrice!)

Other good examples include Redmond and Pereyra. I'd chuck Lingard in there too as he's still quite young but has been around for a while.

There do seem to be fewer of them these days as a general rule. Maybe it's a sign of an increasing lack of patience clubs have in underperforming assets.

I've noticed that I can and SHOULD own Chelsea players - just never captain them!
They never fail to haul, they just exceptionally blank when I captain them.

I have a crappy grudge on Son now - I was one of those who got really destroyed by him. But maybe we should work against this grudge as he might come back in rested and hungry? And without Kane he just excels...

I always get stuck on getting the one good player in a poor side.
Grealish a current example. Like him as a player but Villa are poor. Never get around an FPL asset being able to do well in a poor side.
On the other side time and time again fall into the Bournemouth trap. Never have success with them. Now I've killed Rico. Bought him on the back of form and as Xmas bench cover. He's ended up starting 3 Xmas games through rotation for a net 1 pt. Only game he has returned since I got him he stayed on the bench (Chelsea).

I also changed my opinion on the fear of avoiding good players on 4YCs. It burned me so bad this season. Ignoring Grealish GW 18-21 when he was the best option for my team structure and budget and went Pulisic instead (my worst ever decision). Sold Taa before GW 18 because of that fear as well and we all know how that worked out.

I've pretty much changed my opinion on this as well.

Although I also sold TAA but not for yellow card reasons!

Funnily enough I brought in Rico and he got booked and suspended the same week but as it was just Rico not a big deal 🙂

Of course the main reason was the blank GW but the 4YCs definitely pushed me towards it even more. I tried to be clever and predict that either Taa picks a 5th YC or Klopp rests him for the last GW where a YC would get him suspended. Neither happened. I think if Taa wasn't on a 4YCs, there is a big chance I would have held. Doesn't matter now 🙂

My main changed opinion is Salah vs Mane.

Last season, I was a staunch defender of Salah over Mane even though Salah was 3m more expensive. Salah has better stats at the time.

This season, after watching a lot of Liverpool games late last season and early this season, I actually prefer Mane (marginally). He’s a little more clinical at the moment. However, I will own both soon.

Both have good fixtures, Maupay looks the better player but DCL has better service. Tough decision.

Your team is like those so called plain girls in in films who take off their glasses and open their hair and suddenly they're beautiful. Maupay to Ings and Moura to Traore/Grealish or even Maddson and you'll "be beautiful" 😀

Thoughts on the best move(s) here with 2FT and 1m

          Ryan
Taa • Lundy • Otamendi (avl) --- Rico (WAT) Aurier (LIV)
          Kdb • Salah • Martial • Grealish -- Stephens
          Vardy • Rashford • Ings

A: Otamendi >> Sidibe / Gomez / Soy and carry over FT
          B: Otamendi + Grealish (mci) >> 4.8m def + Maddison
          C: Martial + Rashford >> Mane + Maupay
          D: Something else

          B) Kane & Alli --> Abraham & Sterling ( Traore bench)
          C) Kane & Alli & Aurier --> Abraham & Sterling & Soyuncu (-4)

I think Abraham & Sterling outscores that duo for the next 2 weeks at least.
Abraham ( BUR, new) & Sterling ( avl, CRY) vs Salah( tot, MUN) & Ings ( lei, WOL)

You sure about Abraham? Everytime I watch Chelsea he doesn´t look premier league quality. I guess he gets goals but not at the same rate as the beginning of the season.

yeah I agree on that I have sold him after 5 blank GW then he started to score or assist again and fixtures against Burnley and Newcastle is very tempting tbh. Thats why I don't prefer Ings playing against LEI and Wolves.

                4 years, 2 months ago

Abraham looks good, doesn't get any quality service though fullbacks don't attack unless Alonso starts, midfield 3 of jorg jova and Kante not creative at all so trying purely on mount and William

It's come down to this.... I have an 11 points advantage with TAA, Robbo and Salah (c)
He has TAA, Mane and Salah (c)
