Arteta’s Arsenal show signs of defensive improvement in United victory

Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United

  • Goals: Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m), Sokratis (£4.9m)
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Sokratis x3, Bernd Leno (£5.0m) x2, Pepe x1

Earlier this week we wrote about the green shoots of recovery shown by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in their defeat to Chelsea.

There was further encouragement on New Year’s Day, with the Gunners deserved winners over the Jekyll-and-Hyde outfit that is Manchester United.

The matches in Gameweeks 20 and 21 followed a similar pattern, with the difference this time being that Arsenal had established a more comfortable two-goal cushion by the time their energy levels were depleted.

The north London side look much hungrier under their new head coach, with their all-action, high-pressing approach clearly borrowed from the Manchester City playbook.

It’ll take a while for Arteta to fully get his methods across to this Arsenal squad, who are, by their own admission, not fit enough to carry out their manager’s demanding gameplan for a full 90 minutes.

The Gunners were gasping for air in the second half, with a flagging Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) pleading to be substituted and Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) scoffing an energy bar as his own limbs seized up.

Interviewed after the game, David Luiz (£5.7m) said:

We have to be honest and admit physically we are not ready, but you have to show heart and this team is ready to change a lot of things.

Arteta himself added:

That wasn’t the plan [to sit back in the second half], I have to admit, but at the moment we are suffering a little bit to maintain the intensity we had in the first half. I think it will come, it is part of the process, the way we train, but at the moment we don’t have much time to do so.

It might be that we don’t really see the fruits of Arteta’s labour until 2020/21, then, after the Gunners have had a full, intensive pre-season under their new boss.

The impact has been immediate, though, and Fantasy managers will be watching with interest ahead of some appealing fixtures for the Gunners in Gameweeks 25-32.

We FPL bosses have largely dodged the Arsenal defence for a while now but it is at the back where the Gunners look most improved, with the sight of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) diligently covering his left-back and even Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) tracking back from the number ten role summing up the collective approach to defending.

It was only an error from Bernd Leno (£5.0m) that let Chelsea back into the game last Sunday and, with the Gunners not shooting themselves in the foot this time around, United never seriously looked like getting back into the game.

Names we have all smirked at over the past couple of years – Luiz, Sokratis (£4.9m), Sead Kolasinac (£5.2m) and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m) – were all superb at the back, with Torreira and Granit Xhaka (£5.1m) covering expertly in front of them.

Carry on like this and we may even have to start considering them for the weeks and months ahead.

Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m) was named in the starting XI for the first time by Arteta, impressing down the right flank and opening the scoring when converting a deflected cross from Kolasinac.

Pepe later struck the upright and created chances for Lacazette, Aubameyang and Torreira in an eye-catching 62-minute showing.

Arsenal’s two premium FPL forwards contributed majorly to the cause without having too many sights of goal, with Lacazette screwing his best chance wide after making a fool out of Harry Maguire (£5.2m) and Aubameyang volleying his only shot of the game off-target.

Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) continues to sparkle in ‘the hole’, meanwhile, but there is a sense that he might not be the most explosive FPL asset in the mid-price midfield bracket, given that he’s had only one shot since Arteta took charge.

After back-to-back wins over Newcastle United and Burnley, the Red Devils treated us to one of their meek away-day specials at the Emirates.

For the money that we pay for the likes of Anthony Martial (£7.9m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) in FPL – not unsubstantial but hardly top-dollar, either – we have become accustomed to swallowing the occasional dismal display in the knowledge that a haul may be just around the corner.

United started the brighter of the two teams, with Rashford forcing Leno into a save early on, but a positive opening ten minutes gave way to a fairly poor performance, with Maguire’s close-range header on the stroke of half-time as close as the Red Devils came to finding a way past Leno.

Martial indeed didn’t have a single shot, while Rashford was wasteful and Daniel James (£6.1m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.3m) were anonymous as the United attack failed to click.

The likes of Maguire and Luke Shaw (£5.4m) were pretty ropey at the back, too, as they have been for much of 2019/20.

Still, bottom-of-the-table Norwich (who the Red Devils play next in the league) offer Rashford and co an immediate chance at redemption, just as Newcastle did after the Gameweek 18 loss to Watford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s troops will likely be without Paul Pogba (£8.4m) when they next play in the Premier League, with the United boss saying of the Frenchman in his post-match presser:

He’s injured now and he’ll probably need an operation on his foot. And let’s see how long it takes for him to get back.

We’ve had scans and while it’s nothing major, it’s something that has to be sorted and dealt with, within a timeframe. He’s been advised to do it as soon as possible.

It’s a big blow that Paul is out now – he’ll probably be out for three or four weeks – and Scott will be out for a few months. Scott has been magnificent and we hoped Paul could come back. He can’t – he’ll be back within a month or so.

On the injury front at Arsenal, Sokratis, Xhaka and Kolasinac were back in the starting XI after recent absences, although the latter seemed to aggravate his ankle problem before being substituted in the second half.

Dani Ceballos (£5.2m) was on the bench, too, but failed to get on.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac (Saka 69′); Torreira, Xhaka; Pepe (Nelson 63′), Ozil, Aubameyang; Lacazette (Guendouzi 82′).

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Matic (Mata 81′); James (Greenwood 59′), Lingard (Pereira 59′), Rashford; Martial.

    Alli + Pieters -> Sarr + Robertson
    Good move?
    Considering Grealish instead of Sarr.

Yea get Grealish I think. Sarr looks good but Grealish more reliable it feels. Sarr in comparison looks
Like a risk not worth taking it, besides deulo and deeney offer decent alternatives into Watford attack you could look at later.

Did a risky early move of Alli and Maupay > Martial and Ings for -4

I’m playing too safe at the mo and keep missing out.

Other than the risk of early transfers how do those moves sit with you lot?

Like ings, not overly keen on martial when maddison and Greslish frankly look much better/safer options.

Not a huge fan myself, but there's potential.

Given the fixtures over the next two GWs, I wouldn't be surprised to see Maupay outscore Ings - I'm thinking of making the switch around GW26 personally.

I brought Martial in last week, and I think he's an improvement on Alli at the moment, but I wonder whether Maddison might be a better investment now...

We were so incredibly close to it in the home leg, but for a Hendo blunder. Liverpool seem to have improved a lot since then though, so I'm not expecting anything other than defeat as a fan (though I'm still hopeful!)

I did look at this but it creates a benching headache every week. I would much rather keep a cheap midfielder as a price point to maintain the team structure (and have less decisions).

It is really tough that... I wouldn't really want to drop any of that front seven at the moment...

If it was a long term move then I'd suggest losing one of Mane or Salah, but of course you'd want all three for the DGW!

      I really don't know, sorry!

If you downgraded Tammy to Greenwood, could you do Rico to TAA? You’d have to play 4-5-1 but it would mean keeping that sexy
      midfield.

Apologies for the repost - bottomed last page! Happy to return advice!

Across the next three weeks I'm planning four transfers. The question I have atm is when I do each.

    OUT: Kelly, Targett, Sterling, Rashford
    IN: TAA, Holgate, Mane, DCL

    Full team:
    Hendo, Martin
    Lund, Soy, Aurier, Kelly, Targett
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Martial, Cantwell
    Vardy, Rashford, Maupay

    Current plan is:
    GW22: Targett -> Holgate
    GW23: Kelly + Rashford -> TAA + DCL -4
    GW24: Sterling -> Mane

Any issues or suggestions? I fancy making the Holgate move this week as his fixture easily trumps Kelly's, Aurier's and Targett's

Always difficult to plan moves 2-3 weeks in advance as a lot can change. We seem to have similar issues and I am not sure I would want a forward line of Vardy, Maupay and DCL. I would only want one of the latter 2.

Sterling to Mane you can do whenever. Liverpool best team in the league so max exposure is always good.

        Totally agree with you.

If I was setting up for the long term, I think Salah + Mane is a bit too much in midfield to have alongside TAA, and I'd lose one of these rather than Rashford to avoid that front line.

But because of the DGW, I think it's almost essential to have all three of the big Pool boys, and I think removing one of my United players is the best way to do it. I would not be against moving Maupay + Salah out in GW26, say, for Ings (with cracking fixtures) and someone like Maddison. Hard to plan this far ahead though!

Sounds like a good plan, DCL nice fixture run ends in 26, Maupay ends in 29. That´s about when the blanks and dgw starts . I´m not saying Maupay over DCL but that is something i´ve kind of counted in while i went maupay, that i probably not going to need to make a transfer in 27, while with DCL you prob want to. Maupay plays Villa then Bou in that period.

With a rank of 20k you don't need advice from me 🙂

But, as you asked, I'd say there's no need for a -4. I'd consider doing 2 and 3 for free and do Fabianski at a later date.

Interesting call between Maddison and Mane. I went Mane and Salah on my WC 2 weeks ago and am waiting/hoping for this to really pay off. I really want Maddison, he's just so steady and consistent and so heavily involved in everything Leicester do. In your position I might be tempted to go Maddison and then double up on Pool defence....

Is it crazy to get rid of Tammy and Tomori for DCL and Kiko (if fit)?
Che playing BUR and Eve vs BRI.
Can see points in both games but I must sell Tomori, he frustrates me too long.
Other possibility is to sell only Tomori for Kiko and then next week Tammy+Rash to Dcl+Ings so that I can get Salah and Robbo for dgw24.

This week’s naked flame to which several moths are looking curiously:

    Ings: lei, WOL, cpl, liv
    DCL: BHA, whm, NEW, wat

    So an Ings> DCL GW22 / DCL > Ings GW26 Hokey gives:

BHA, whm, NEW, wat, BUR, avl, WHM, NEW, nor

Surely little decisions like this are what FPL is all about 🙂

One thing I add as well, what I learnt this season and should have learnt last season but ignored is this:
Don’t ever try and predict when an in form player will go out of form, when you see bad fixtures it’s logical to expect them to do worse and you get tempted to move them out. Moves like this have never ever worked out for me or very rarely. Just don’t take out an in form player until they start blanking imo, bad fixtures is not a good enough reason.

I've had Ings for most of his run and have contemplated getting rid the last couple of GWs, but Southampton have turned a corner and Ings is absolutely integral to them.

They're also great away from home, so the games against Leicester and Palace especially won't hold any fear.

      I'm keeping.

I think 99.5% of his owners will keep

It’s another contributing factor to the potential upside/downside

    4. The Bad Seed

But that alone is a -8 and some $ lost.

DCL will have to outscore Ings by 8 (2 goals) over 4 games to make ANY gains. That and any value tied up that you will then have to repay.

      Worth it..?

I'd fancy DCL as a 3rd budget striker if you want to opt for a 343.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

It’s not a -8 if you use a FT though... but yes DCL would have to outscore Ings over those 4 to make ANY gains... but I think he has a good chance of doing that before Ings comes back in after those 4

        1. The Bad Seed
          • 6 Years

that move would personally cost me 0.5 now. A bit too for 4 weeks and a bad pedigree like DCL.

I might be able to make back 0.1-0.2 back considering Ings goes a bit down and DCL rises a bit... but not worth it.

Also, even with me sitting on 2 FTs, I just know i'll absolutely need them. hard to imagine anybody has such a luxury...

I know the FT vs Hits school of thought, but I tend to always consider an FT as a -4, hit or not. An FT spent is a Hit waiting to happen, and a Hit done is an FT saved. so works both ways.

Just makes it easier to calculate returns.

Again 343 could work, I might do Tammy>DCL to enable the Salah/Mane double.

apart from liv what fixtures does look bad for ings? Wolves are not watertight, Leicester good but conceded vs Norwich which are worse than Saints, cpl is down the bare bottom with injuries.

DCL got nice fixtures so for me, get both or Maupay who´s got nice run all the way to the blanks and doubles, including Villa and BOU after Everton, where he can be played or benched according to your other options. Those two after Everton are as juicy as they gets from an attacking pov.

Have to make a downgrade somewhere to do Alli to Salah. Already doing Rashford to Ings. Which other transfer to make?

    A. Rico to non-playing 3.9
    B. Grealish to Traore
    C. Something else I'm not seeing

    Henderson
    TAA Soyuncu Lunstram (Kelly Rico)
    KDB Mane Alli Grealish (Hayden)
    Vardy Abraham Rashford

Best budget striker to bring in for Kane (which allows the Salah/Mane/TAA triple axis DGW dream)

            Actually I did question Mahrez!
In fact I remember posting on here after the first few games of the season Leicester won the league something like...

‘Do all the people on here who are transferring Hazard out for Mahrez really think Mahrez will outscore him over the season!?’

            Should have retired then.

For all of you who is planning for a Pool defense double up in GW 24, how will your five-man backline look?
Are you dropping one of Lundy/Soy? Or are you upgrading one of your budget defenders, Rico/Kelly?
The latter one would mean a starting team of four defenders, but that may not be an issue?

I already did Kane -> Ings yesterday so my team is at the moment:

    Gazzaniga
    TAA - Lundstram - Rico
    Salah - KDB - Maddison - Grealish
    Vardy - Ings - Abraham

    Button - Willems - Kelly - Dendoncker

    1ft, 4.3itb

How does this plan look like?

    GW 22 - Dendoncker -> Martial
    GW 23 - save ft
    GW 24 - Maddison + Abraham + Willems -> Mane + Greenwood + Kiko Femenia (-4)

Then I would have this team in dgw:

    Gazzaniga
    TAA - Lundstram - Rico
    Salah - Mane - KDB - Martial - Grealish
    Vardy - Ings

Button - Greenwood - Kelly - Kiko Femenia
