Arteta’s Arsenal show signs of defensive improvement in United victory

Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United

  • Goals: Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m), Sokratis (£4.9m)
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Sokratis x3, Bernd Leno (£5.0m) x2, Pepe x1

Earlier this week we wrote about the green shoots of recovery shown by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in their defeat to Chelsea.

There was further encouragement on New Year’s Day, with the Gunners deserved winners over the Jekyll-and-Hyde outfit that is Manchester United.

The matches in Gameweeks 20 and 21 followed a similar pattern, with the difference this time being that Arsenal had established a more comfortable two-goal cushion by the time their energy levels were depleted.

The north London side look much hungrier under their new head coach, with their all-action, high-pressing approach clearly borrowed from the Manchester City playbook.

It’ll take a while for Arteta to fully get his methods across to this Arsenal squad, who are, by their own admission, not fit enough to carry out their manager’s demanding gameplan for a full 90 minutes.

The Gunners were gasping for air in the second half, with a flagging Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) pleading to be substituted and Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) scoffing an energy bar as his own limbs seized up.

Interviewed after the game, David Luiz (£5.7m) said:

We have to be honest and admit physically we are not ready, but you have to show heart and this team is ready to change a lot of things.

Arteta himself added:

That wasn’t the plan [to sit back in the second half], I have to admit, but at the moment we are suffering a little bit to maintain the intensity we had in the first half. I think it will come, it is part of the process, the way we train, but at the moment we don’t have much time to do so.

It might be that we don’t really see the fruits of Arteta’s labour until 2020/21, then, after the Gunners have had a full, intensive pre-season under their new boss.

The impact has been immediate, though, and Fantasy managers will be watching with interest ahead of some appealing fixtures for the Gunners in Gameweeks 25-32.

We FPL bosses have largely dodged the Arsenal defence for a while now but it is at the back where the Gunners look most improved, with the sight of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) diligently covering his left-back and even Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) tracking back from the number ten role summing up the collective approach to defending.

It was only an error from Bernd Leno (£5.0m) that let Chelsea back into the game last Sunday and, with the Gunners not shooting themselves in the foot this time around, United never seriously looked like getting back into the game.

Names we have all smirked at over the past couple of years – Luiz, Sokratis (£4.9m), Sead Kolasinac (£5.2m) and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m) – were all superb at the back, with Torreira and Granit Xhaka (£5.1m) covering expertly in front of them.

Carry on like this and we may even have to start considering them for the weeks and months ahead.

Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m) was named in the starting XI for the first time by Arteta, impressing down the right flank and opening the scoring when converting a deflected cross from Kolasinac.

Pepe later struck the upright and created chances for Lacazette, Aubameyang and Torreira in an eye-catching 62-minute showing.

Arsenal’s two premium FPL forwards contributed majorly to the cause without having too many sights of goal, with Lacazette screwing his best chance wide after making a fool out of Harry Maguire (£5.2m) and Aubameyang volleying his only shot of the game off-target.

Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) continues to sparkle in ‘the hole’, meanwhile, but there is a sense that he might not be the most explosive FPL asset in the mid-price midfield bracket, given that he’s had only one shot since Arteta took charge.

After back-to-back wins over Newcastle United and Burnley, the Red Devils treated us to one of their meek away-day specials at the Emirates.

For the money that we pay for the likes of Anthony Martial (£7.9m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) in FPL – not unsubstantial but hardly top-dollar, either – we have become accustomed to swallowing the occasional dismal display in the knowledge that a haul may be just around the corner.

United started the brighter of the two teams, with Rashford forcing Leno into a save early on, but a positive opening ten minutes gave way to a fairly poor performance, with Maguire’s close-range header on the stroke of half-time as close as the Red Devils came to finding a way past Leno.

Martial indeed didn’t have a single shot, while Rashford was wasteful and Daniel James (£6.1m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.3m) were anonymous as the United attack failed to click.

The likes of Maguire and Luke Shaw (£5.4m) were pretty ropey at the back, too, as they have been for much of 2019/20.

Still, bottom-of-the-table Norwich (who the Red Devils play next in the league) offer Rashford and co an immediate chance at redemption, just as Newcastle did after the Gameweek 18 loss to Watford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s troops will likely be without Paul Pogba (£8.4m) when they next play in the Premier League, with the United boss saying of the Frenchman in his post-match presser:

He’s injured now and he’ll probably need an operation on his foot. And let’s see how long it takes for him to get back.

We’ve had scans and while it’s nothing major, it’s something that has to be sorted and dealt with, within a timeframe. He’s been advised to do it as soon as possible.

It’s a big blow that Paul is out now – he’ll probably be out for three or four weeks – and Scott will be out for a few months. Scott has been magnificent and we hoped Paul could come back. He can’t – he’ll be back within a month or so.

On the injury front at Arsenal, Sokratis, Xhaka and Kolasinac were back in the starting XI after recent absences, although the latter seemed to aggravate his ankle problem before being substituted in the second half.

Dani Ceballos (£5.2m) was on the bench, too, but failed to get on.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac (Saka 69′); Torreira, Xhaka; Pepe (Nelson 63′), Ozil, Aubameyang; Lacazette (Guendouzi 82′).

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Matic (Mata 81′); James (Greenwood 59′), Lingard (Pereira 59′), Rashford; Martial.

Not sure whether to stick with Maupay + Abraham.
Good fixtures for both and they are doing fine but the likes of Ings/DCL or even Jimenez seem good shouts too.

    Ramsdale.
    TAA, Soyuncu, Holgate.
    Grealish, KDB, Mane, Salah.
    Maupay, Abraham, Vardy.

Over the season, Abraham is a fantastic option, but given Chelsea's upcoming fixtures, and the form of the likes of DCL/Ings as you suggest, I think it's safe to drop him for a few weeks.

2 free transfers, .3 m in bank and don’t know best move. Does this sound sensible -

Alli to max 5.4 m mid and Greenwood to Ings this week free then would allow Rashford and Richarlison to DCL and Mané for week 24

If sounds OK which mid up to 5.4 m?
    A Cantwell
    B Fleck
    C Snodgrass
    D Mooy
    E Moutinho
F Who am I missing that is better?

How about Aurier downgrade with your 2fits. I'm not a great advocate of short term transfer plans. Can see Ings having a good chance of returning in those next 4....scoring against liv is so written in the stars too.

To follow on from my last post, and continued FPL analysis of myself I’d like to ask you all a question,

Does anyone else have FPL stubbornness?
Where you either refuse to bring in a player despite excellent form because you’d previously told yourself they were average, they wouldn’t keep up the good form, and now you don’t want to have to admit to yourself you might have been wrong?
Similarly with refusing to get rid of a player who you think is good, and even though others tell you it’s a mistake, you stick with them, because you need to know you were right all along!?

...disclaimer, I’m talking about Kane, and Ings, but it can apply to anyone..United attackers, Zaha, Sterling, Liverpool defence are all contenders for the stubbornness disease.

Yea. Ignored Tammy all season and Leicester defence, wasn’t particularly ignoring it but never got round to it. Been ignoring grealish as well.
Being stubborn with zaha, such a let down, had him like five weeks now. Just want some return to justify him a bit, arsenal has to be his last week tho.

I’ve had Zaha too. Problem with him has been the lovely run of fixtures (and VAR of course).
I don’t think he’ll make it to the Arsenal game for me.

Yea if wasn’t for VAR he would have done a bit better. I’m not overly expecting him to get anything vs Arsenal but only option would be to hit him out, and I’m only really interested in grealish who sadly has city. So seems like I stick again -_-

it’s a tough call, I have both Zaha and Grealish, playing a 3-5-2, but I have to downgrade one of them to switchback to my preferred 3-4-3. And I think I prefer Grealish long term.

            Unless Zaha gets a transfer.

Me neither...because I’ve been telling myself he’ll be rotated, or get injured over Christmas, and because he’s not good enough to keep up his goal scoring form.
But I might have to relent now.

Sterling cause I didn’t want to own him this season
Martial cause he historically scores without bonus points
Aguero cause of rotation (usually a great pick early in the season before he gets hurt)

        • 9 Years

I’ve not had any of those three.
I nearly went with Martial when he was a popular pick, but he’s a good example of when my gut feeling (that he has maybe one good game in four) has actually paid off.

I mean there is some logic there.
You’re not going to catch up to anyone by just doing the same thing as they’re doing.
That can be a bit of a problem with the game sometimes, my OR is around 10k, but most of the teams in the top 10k all have 8/9 of the same players, so very difficult to gain any ground.

I've had Aurier, Son and KWP all fail me when I've had them, so I'm now basically ignoring Spurs for the rest of the season, form be damned. And as a Leicester fan, I will also give Leicester players more leeway than others.

I also got rid of Grealish this GW because I just think he looks like a bell-end (SRSLY what is with the hair). And then he punishes me with a 13 point haul. Serves me right for being so shallow...!

Yep, those are my Leicester 3 too. I've had Vardy since GW1, and brought in the other two early-ish as well. Barring long term injuries they'll probably be there all season long.

PS: I brought in Traoré in place of Grealish. Corn rows > Peaky Blinders 😛

To give us a chance of finishing 2nd I think that we are going to need to beat mci when they come here on 22/2
Did the same as you with Grealish - doh!!

This happened when Kane was pretty cheap like 5-6m and he was scoring consistently. Was so frustrating that he kept on scoring. Then I got him in, he blanked in that game and I probably took him out instantly.

Something similar would have happened this year with Vardy but fortunately got him back before his mega hauls. I dont like to own him and Kevin though, always trying to find an excuse to drop them.

2nd scenario was more related to tactics. It was 2-3 years back when everything was going smoothly and somehow I managed to avoid hits till GW20, after that I was trying to avoid hits for no sensible reason, just wanted to finish the season without any hits even though my team was performing poor. Fast forward, GW37 and I did a rage -16 pointer... 😆

When it comes to punt, I rarely back out if I'm sure about someone and I have more trust on them as compared to reliable players. Whether it works or not is different story.

Sounds very similar to how I play the game, so I’m glad I’m not alone.
Kane at 5m, what a time to be alive....although based on this season that’s probably how much he’ll be in 20/21 FPL.

I refused to bring in Mount, he went all the way up in price and has since gone down again. Got away with that one, along with early season bandwagons like Haller.

Unfortunately I'm currently doing the same with Ings, who I remain convinced is injury prone and not fixture proof. 13 goals in 20 suggests otherwise and it's killing my rank, 1 goal + BPS at a time.

        Exactly the same with ings.

I thought I’d got rid of my stubbornness early on, when I brought in Pukki, I spent the whole of preseason telling everyone he’s a championship player, 29 and never cut it in any top league, not even in Scotland.
Then I got him in after GW2, made a nice profit as well.

The fixture ‘difficulty’ indicator is a funny one.
I think the level of difficulty is relative to the different positions, for example, teams like Man Utd, Spurs and Arsenal are all capable of scoring against anyone, well maybe not United, but none of them can defend.

So in the next round of games we’ve got Palace vs Arsenal.
So I’d say for Kelly/Guita owners that’s a red fixture,
But for Zaha, that’s bright green.

                    You are so right.
I have some thoughts on why i want to sell Mane.Mourinho knows that Liverpool are the best team in the league and they can't beat them in open play so i think he is preparing a big bus.My guess is that the score will be 0-2 for Liverpool. In every gw i read from which side all the teams have conceded goals.Tottenham in their last 6 home have conceded 6 goals (Webster, Willian(x2), HWilson(x2),Baldock,Doucoure.All of them were from their left side.Salah's side. Also Mane has not scored in any "big game".Neither Salah though.Maybe Firmino is the one.Maybe all these are crap but these are my thoughts.

looking at my 2nd hit of the season but its a -8. Thoughts on this?

    Out: Pope, Rico, Pukki, Alli

first two on bench kind of neglects each other, i would not bench Ings, Traore vs deep tight Newcastle no, Leicester looks tough on paper but if Joelinton can almost score vs them then Ings will, Southampton are in form, i´d imagine this could be quite open game. Out of those, Jimenez is the worst cap option (salah, KDB, maddison, vardy and martial all better option). Salah should be captain against that Spurs team, could be ugly, they will do like they did to Leicester and spurs are worse than leicester.

Hey guys, bit anxious about owning Ramsdale and to a lesser extent Rico who can warm the bench. BOU do have a decent home game to Watford though and with that in mind what should I do? 2 FT and 1.1 ITB

    A Ramsdale > Fabianski
    B Rico > Soy
C Downgrade someone to allow Ramsdale & Rico > Fab & Soy next week (am 0.1 short)

    Ramsdale
    TAA / Lund / Holgate / Kiko
    Mane / Salah / KDB / Traore
    Vardy / Ings

    Button / Maupay / Cantwell / Rico

Watford is the one with a plum fixture, Bou do not have that atm, with all injuries. King is out for five six weeks, Stacey out. And the former is a striker but he does actually significantly weakens the team if does not play, in both ends of the pitch. I would try to off-load Bou assets and rather try to target them with players who plays them soon.

Great ... Maddison for Martial and Cantwell for Snodgrass ... I guess the latter is for DGW? Not sure it’s worth it ...

Maybe Robertson to Gomez? Could fund Martial to Son. Son will be playing in an even more advanced role with Kane out imo.

Oo I like this suggestion a lot!

I also like Gomez. Not sure Son Liv(H) and Martial Nor(H) is worth doing...could leave money ITB and see how Spurs look without Kane.

Yeah, maybe wait till after the LIV match to bring Son in.
