Liverpool assets providing FPL managers with Double Gameweek 24 dilemma

Liverpool 2-0 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), Sadio Mane (£12.3m)
  • Assist: Andrew Robertson (£7.0m)
  • Bonus: TBC – still unconfirmed at the time of writing

Fantasy Premier League managers opting for a Liverpool triple-up in Double Gameweek 24 face the proverbial welcome selection headache from the options available.

Some FPL bosses will have already made up their minds but for those still deliberating over which three assets to perm, there were more strong cases being made in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Having registered only two shut-outs in the first 15 Gameweeks of the season, the Reds have now banked five clean sheets in a row – more than nine other Premier League clubs, including Spurs, Wolves, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, have managed all season.

With full-backs Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m), we’re not just getting defensive contributions.

Alexander-Arnold already has 12 attacking returns to his name in 2019/20 but took a backseat against the Blades, with fellow full-back Robertson banking an assist and maximum bonus for his first double-digit haul since Gameweek 36 of last season.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m), about as nailed a starter as any Liverpool player in a Double Gameweek, also looks set to pick up a bonus point or two to go with his clean sheet to move fourth in the FPL points standings for defenders, behind only his two aforementioned teammates and John Lundstram (£5.1m).

The ‘value’ bet would be a defensive double-up (or even triple-up, for the maverick few) and one of Sadio Mane (£12.3m) or Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), with the extra cash freed up perhaps the difference between having a balanced FPL squad and a fodder-filled bench.

The trouble, of course, is that the two premium Liverpool midfield options are difficult to ignore.

Salah and Mane were both on the scoresheet at Anfield, with Salah converting Robertson’s cross to break the deadlock and Mane finishing at the second attempt after the interval to put the game to bed.

There could have been further or other attacking returns, too.

Salah would have had the assist for Mane’s goal had the Senegal international converted his pass at the first time of asking, while the Egyptian also forced Dean Henderson (£4.9m) into three saves of varying degrees of difficulty and agonisingly hit the post with a cross that drifted over everyone’s head on the hour-mark.

Mane meanwhile was inches from getting more meaningful contact on a Robertson delivery just after the break, with John Egan‘s (£4.5m) unpunished bear hug on the left-winger preventing him from doing so.

Certainly, there was no sign of fatigue from the pair or any lingering effects of the chronic ankle issue that bugged Salah in late-autumn, with the premium duo looking sharp throughout.

Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) will likely be the differential Double Gameweek 24 punt.

Owned by just 8.9% of overall FPL managers and only 1.5% in the top 10k, it’s easy to see why he’s not as popular an option, having banked fewer FPL points than the three discussed Liverpool defenders and even one less attacking return than Alexander-Arnold.

His selfless link-up play can adversely affect his own Fantasy output but there has been little wrong his underlying stats all season (more shots in the box than Mane, for instance) and there is a sense that he is perhaps due an explosion of points.

A meagre four attacking returns in 14 league appearances tells its own story, sadly, and his goal conversion rate has always been on the modest side in previous campaigns.

The fixture congestion eases slightly for the Reds now, although there is the small matter of a Merseyside derby in the FA Cup third round this Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp promised “fresh legs” for that encounter although his lengthy injury list – Naby Keita (£5.8m) was added to the list of casualties when pulling out of the starting XI in the warm-up – may prevent him from making wholesale changes against the Toffees.

Speaking after full-time, Klopp said:

I will not tell Carlo Ancelotti the line-up. But I will do what I think is right to do. Some things I can decide by myself, I will. And some things the medical department will tell me. So that means I don’t know in this moment what the line-up will be, but it will be the best possible [one] for us in this moment.

But we will have fresh legs and what we need is support. They played yesterday, we played today, the only advantage we have is Anfield. We need support from the first second. We will see how it will be. It was a tough game tonight and we have to make sure we make the right decisions. Hopefully, I can do that.

We have 13 adult players. And go through this period and after tonight we have 12. Takumi [Minamino] coming in makes it 13 again. Nat Phillips – if you want to count him with 22 years as an adult player with no Premier League experience – makes it, at least for one or two weeks, 14.

On Keita, the Liverpool boss added:

He will not be involved against Everton. That makes it 12 adult players we have, plus the kids, so that’s not cool, but we cannot change it.

Sheffield United welcomed back their very own popular FPL asset for this clash after he missed the defeat to Manchester City with an ankle injury.

Lundstram returned to the Blades starting XI and almost scored within five minutes, an opportunistic effort looping wide of Alisson‘s (£6.0m) goal.

The out-of-position Fantasy defender then made sure of putting the ball in the back of the net despite being flagged for offside but there was to be no fairytale goal for the boyhood Liverpool fan, with a VAR check confirming that he had strayed beyond the last defender.

After David McGoldrick‘s (£5.4m) effort that Alisson beat away, the Blades didn’t have another (legal) shot on goal for another 80 minutes, with substitute Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) almost denying the Reds their clean sheet with the clock ticking down.

As a typically honest (and perhaps overly harsh) Wilder said after full-time, the Blades battled manfully but barely troubled their hosts:

From our point of view, I was disappointed really. I did not think we laid a glove on them.

I think the scoreline flattered us. I know Dean [Henderson] got a lot of criticism for his unfortunate mistake at our place, but I thought he was the difference between it not being three, four or five.

Obviously, when you come here, you have got to try and get a foothold in the game and we could not have got off to a worse start in terms of George (Baldock) slipping and they took full advantage. It gave them a big lift and it was comfortable for Liverpool.

You could see why they are world and European champions and they look like they are going to be Premier League winners as well. People talk to me about academies and technical stuff and rotation, but the basic stuff they had to tonight – win headers, races and drop on second balls and run and play forward and back and defend as a team – they did it miles better than us. They were more aggressive and physical than us. It was not like us.

The two parts of comfort I can take is that our supporters were absolutely magnificent in their backing of our players. We never gave them anything to shout out.

The second bit is that is has taken 21 games for a team to really roll us over like Liverpool did.

That last line sums Sheffield United up perfectly: in this their first Premier League campaign in over a decade, they have yet to be beaten by more than a two-goal margin and have been competitive in pretty much every single match bar this one.

It’s fair to say that Lundstram and co will be back in many starting XIs in Gameweek 22, with the visit of West Ham United providing a better chance of FPL returns at both ends of the pitch.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson (Lallana 88′); Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum; Salah (Elliott 90′), Firmino, Mane (Origi 78′).

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Henderson; Basham, Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Lundstram, Norwood (Besic 78′), Fleck, Stevens; McGoldrick (Sharp 66′), Mousset (McBurnie 65′).

Well done, and same for me too.

After a horror couple of GWs (GW 19: took TAA out before Leicester and captained Vardy vs Pool, GW 20: captained Salah vs Wolves), I've more than halved my rank from 188k to 73k.

Aurier to someone cheap so you can upgrade Grealish/Traore/DCL if needed in the future. In your case I would go for someone like Hanley because you already have 4 nice defenders

How do we think Heaton's and Wesley's injuries impact Grealish?

I know Grealish is the big fish in the small pond, but the pond just got even smaller. Will his output be affected? Wesley's hold-up play massively benefited Grealish. High chance that Grealish is now on penalties, though.

I just wonder how Villa will be as a team.

Interesting, I'm thinking of selling. Not very good fixtures and it's hard to overstate just how much the attacking potential of Villa as a team and, I'm assuming Grealish by extension, benefits from Wesley's unselfish link-up play.

This is my gut instinct too. Will Villa continue to score enough to make Grealish worth keeping?

I have 2 FTs and can do Abraham & Grealish > DCL & Martial. I'm reluctant to lose Abraham with BUR but Chelsea aren't right (especially at home) and, despite Utd's struggles, Martial is still playing OOP and has some okay fixtures coming up. DCL's next 5 are also very good.

Worth keeping an eye on. McGinn and Wesley out is a massive blow for Villa. But maybe they'll change their style of play a bit, not be as reliant on the strong striker now, but playing a bit more dynamic with El Ghazi and Trezeguet.
They'll still ship goals though, but they were doing that with Heaton as well.

Yeah, good points. For some reason, I'm looking for a reason to ship Grealish (I think the City fixture is putting me off), but he's still their talisman and, if anything, they'll be even more importance placed on him to score/create.

Mahrez nailed for City at the moment, you think?
Could be a good shout against a Villa side without their first choice GK. And an easy switch with Alli.

It still find it astonishing how competitive FPL is these days. There's so many commonly available sources for information and strategy and the edges communities like us have on the rest of the field is so much smaller than it was 5, 10 years ago.

Personally speaking I feel like I've had a good season and I'm at 168k in the rankings. I've only had 3 red arrows since gameweek 8.

It's much tougher for sure, but still just as fun!

I find it's also a lot harder to make progress, but so much easier to drop like a stone!

A couple of bad GWs can easily lose all progress made throughout the previous 7 or 8 GWs.

That's exactly right. I'm hoping the field will start to split a bit in the coming weeks as doubles, blanks etc approach and a band GW will be less severe.

Yeah, this rings true. I think the Liverpool DGW will have a big impact.

Anybody who's anybody will have a triple up, and a lot of the casuals won't be aware of it until it's too late.

Yes indeed, top 10k 5 years ago is almost certainly at least top 50k now. However, given that 10k is generally accepted as the target I'll keep striving for it. I'm gutted I missed out by 1.5k places, or 6 points, in 2016/17.

I’m actually finding it less fun.
I think the problem for me is the lack of variety in the team selections, if you look at the top 10k there is little difference in the teams, but gambling on a differential could cost you massively, so I find myself just going with the crowd to keep up, and will probably only look at some maverick picks in the last few games of the season.

That's interesting. Would you be supportive of a rule that encourages regular change then? e.g. you can only have a player for a maximum of 5 consecutive weeks (or something like that)?

I’m not sure about that rule, considering by now more than half of the team are dead teams anyway it’s too difficult I would think.

I would like to see something to make to make the variety of teams easier.
Maybe split the season into 4, and have quarterly wildcards.
Also reclassify points of midfielders, to give us a reason to consider defensive midfielder players...currently 2/3rd of mids aren’t worth looking at because they only get 2/3pts maximum.

Seven green arrows in the past 10 GWs and have moved from 1.6m to 1.2m
It's like swimming in custard this season.

Maybe I'm just being bitter but i think with more & more info readily available to the masses we are all funneled towards the same templates.

                It was...
                Guita
                Aurier, Kelly Soy (Lund, Rico)
                KDB, Salah, Martial, Grealish (Hoyden)
                Vardy, Abraham, Kane

Firmio, TAA & Foster in for Kane, Aurier & Guita

If going Mane,Salah is it viable to move KDB >> Mane in 24?

Means less downgrades elsewhere and with so many value forwards KDB is easily brought back as and when needed.
Would only lose 0.3m value in KDB.

I actually think this is a reasonable idea IF you only want the Mane Salah double up for GW24 (and this you would reverse the transfer in GW25).

Trouble is Liverpool fixtures get very tasty so you may want Mane, Salah & KDB long term

It’s an easy downgrade going back.
Yeh just looking at a different alternative in case Arsenal start rolling.

It’s easier to get from KDB to Mane than Maddison.

Really appreciate some help with this
            2FT 1.0ITB

            Ryan, Button
            Trent, Soy, Lund, Kelly, AURIER
            Salah, Debruyne, ALLI, Grealish, Dendo
            Vardy, Jimenez, ABRAHAM

By GW24 I want Aurier, Alli and Abraham to become 4.0, Mane, DCL but I only have 0.2 wiggle room on price. Thoughts on this:

            GW22: Aurier -> 4.0 & Alli -> 2 week punt (any suggestions?)
            GW23: Abraham -> DCL
            GW24: Alli replacement -> Mane

This gives me the luxury of a 2 week punt but if the prices move by more than 0.2 I’ll have to downgrade Grealish which I can’t do without an extra transfer so is the Ali 2 week punt too much of a luxury.

            Any thoughts greatly appreciated

On the players you want to lose and want to get 0.2 is not much and you can be easily priced out.

To play it safe you could just do Aurier and Tammy to DCL and Hanley this week. Richarlison, Maddison and Silva/Dilva are probably the best punts in that order

I'd rather not punt in such a tight situation, get mane asap. It's not like he's not getting points and you never know what injury/suspension comes up, play safe is my suggestion

Thanks -> to get Mane I need to do the other 2 transfers first to free up cash so can’t get him until next week at earliest which would mean Alli stays this week.

I’d love to give Abraham one more week with the fixture but DCL also has a decent fixture I suppose

Richarlison for the two week Alli replacement.
Or just go straight to Mane, Liverpool will score for fun past Tot/Utd defence right now.

Can’t get to Mane this week as need to do the other 2 transfers first for the cash. Richarlison is an interesting idea - thanks.

It’s just whether I go with the 2 week punt and risk being priced out or I stick with Alli for the Liverpool game (likely 2 pointer) but less risk of price issues

If I go 4.2 then I have 0 wiggle room on price and so I’ll def get prices out. DCL will certainly rise this week for example.

            TC in GW24?

Although the likes of Man City, United or Leicester may end up with a DGW, none of their options really stand out as TC potential for differing reasons. At least in 24 the likes of Salah/Mane will probably max out on mins.

              Yes TC Salah

Reason: At some point Salah is going to explode at the same
time as Mane blanks and I’m not going to miss it.

Liverpool double gameweek with reasonable fixtures is as good as it gets really for TC, maybe there will be a better option late in the season but can’t see anything much better coming up.

Game time risk to be monitored but I’d get the feel Salah plays both then I’m all in.

Not with 2 away games, and Wolves being one of them. Must be better options later on in a DWG.

Why do you think they'll max out on mins? It's my one worry from this dgw. They have a week break sure, but after the second game they have 4 days until the next game

Should I change my front three of Vardy, Ings and Maupay?

DCL and Jimi are appealing but maybe they would be sideways moves and in Jimi's case a use of additional funds that could be used elsewhere?

I'm in this exact predicament, I'm suddenly leaning Jimenez (c) but any one of those could work

I'd need to lose Ings for Jimi which is a risk as Ings can't stop scoring. Jimi has one peach of a game against NEW before a tougher run so wondering if I should stick with Ings and upgrade Ramsdale & Rico instead.

Maupay has Villa and Bournemouth next so maybe worth holding for those 2, or at least Villa..

What are Bournemouth's prospects of tightening up at the back with this nice run of games coming up? Time to ship Ramsdale and Rico or hold in the hope they shut out Watford?

FPL price changes have screwed me over. I bought Tomori in GW8 for 4.7m. Since then he had a couple of rises but has now dropped back to the same value as I bought him -4.7. However my sell value has dropped to 4.6. Can't be right. I had planned to sell him for Soyinciou and had the exact money to do it but don't want to rush into it yet as I thought I had a 0.1m buffer with Tomori and wouldt lose any sell value by him dropping in price.

How many of the 118 points have people captained in comparison to the 120? This is the first time Ings has done anything of note, and a lot of his goals have come from fortuitous situations so there's going to be a heck of a drop off soon enough.

Indeed, hats off to Ings owners but you have been incredibly lucky to keep him for so many consecutive games without him breaking down let alone put in all of the FPL performances he has been. He has threatened to do this for 2-3 years but has always disappointed due to injury. The potential and raw talent has always been there but nobody could have predicted this sort of streak. Perhaps it's fair to say that he's over his injury woes, but sod's law - the moment I bring him in he'll get injured again!
