Almost 10% of the top 10k FPL managers fail to use their first Wildcard

We take our regular look at the chip usage and player selections of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

This is our first article in the series since the deadline for using the first Wildcard passed.

Remarkably, almost one in ten of the top 10,000 FPL bosses (at the point of the Gameweek 21 deadline) didn’t use the first of their two permitted Wildcards.

World number four Michael Somers is among that number.

It’d be interesting to know why so many didn’t deploy it. Lack of a need to because of a hugely successful first half of the season? Or blissful ignorance of the rules?

Given some of the stats we have seen already on the make-up of the top 10k managers in 2019/20, it may be more the latter.

Since the deadline for Gameweek 20 passed, 2.34% have used their second Wildcard.

Around one in five have already deployed their Bench Boost this season and there is a similar usage of the Triple Captain chip, too.

Approximately one in six of the top 10k have used their Free Hit over the last five months or so.

Discounting the first Wildcard, 61.7% of the top 10,000 managers have yet to use any of their chips.

Around 15% have used at least two of their chips, however.

Approximately 50 of the top 10,000 managers have already maxed out their allocation, including the second Wildcard.

For those who have used their second Wildcard, there are some familiar names in the ‘template’ squad.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) is the most-owned player in these Wildcard sides, sitting in 93.16% of the teams in question.

Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), Sadio Mane (£12.3m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and John Lundstram (£5.1m) were also widely selected.

There was a lack of consensus between the posts, however: two of the three least-owned players in the template squad below are goalkeepers.

There are four differences from the Wildcard ‘template’ to the most-owned squad in the top 10k overall.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), Anthony Martial (£7.9m), Adama Traore (£5.6m) and Mathew Ryan (£4.8m) are the differentials of sort in the above graphic, while Nick Pope (£4.7m), Dele Alli (£8.8m), James Maddison (£7.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) are the alternatives below.

Just over half of the top 10k captained the sidelined Vardy in Gameweek 21, although there would have been some Mane or Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) vice-captainers amongst that select group who emerged with a 16 or 20-point haul.

Looking in greater detail at the main candidates for the armband in the top 10k below, Salah was the only one who hit a double-digit haul.

As for how the top 10k are set up for Double Gameweek 24, the ownerships for a selection of the various Liverpool double-up and triple-up combinations are currently as follows:

CombinationOwnership
Salah + Mane5.82%
Salah + Alexander-Arnold13.3%
Salah + Robertson1.71%
Mane + Alexander-Arnold58.75%
Mane + Robertson9.54%
Salah + Mane + Alexander-Arnold3.9%
Salah + Mane + Robertson0.19%
Salah + Robertson + Alexander-Arnold0.89%
Mane + Robertson + Alexander-Arnold4.86%

The Mane and Alexander-Arnold combination is by some distance the most popular double-up, while relatively few FPL managers in the top 10k have already lumped on three Liverpool assets (there are other combinations beyond the above, of course).

We’ll surely see those figures rise considerably ahead of Gameweek 24, however.

Fair. The problem with the Mane/Salah alternative is that it could be the other that hauls and the odd one out blanks. If Leicester score, and they will, Vardy will be involved at least.

Save the free transfer for next gw or do something with this team? The plan is to get Robertson in for Aurier in gw 23 (and change Kelly to a 3.9 million defender)

    Guaita
    TAA, Digne, Lundstram
    Salah, KDB, Maddison, Grealish
    Vardy, Ings, Jiménez

Martin, Aurier, Hayden, Kelly, 1.8 million in the bank

Definitely, I don’t understand the reason behind selling him. He is in great form and could have easily had 19 points last GW if the goal wasn’t disallowed by a few centimeters.

His fixtures aren’t bad either, Man City isn’t even in the top half for many of the defensive stats.

Wesley out means he is on pens, not sure how they set up without Wesley, either Kodja or maybe El Gazi as striker. He is the their main man, and not only that, he is the one that shoots too. I was thinking of taking him out but now i´m not that sure, City home looks red but City concedes goals, and nice run after that. Think i´ll downgrading martial as he got Liverpool after norwich then some games with Burnley/Wolves, and injuries in midfield makes them weaker also against teams that gives them space, as you need to win the ball (Mctominay) first before you can counter. With leicester/everton and liverpool having good runs, i might go with a little more in defense.

i think i would but it depends on your plans and teams, Burnley were awful vs Villa, but usually they are more solid and Chelsea do struggle sin those kind of games. Apart from that goals spree in early doors, is Abraham better than Ings, Maupay, DCL? Is he 1.5 or so better?

The sensible is to keep for Burnley, and i suppose it gives you a 2ft next week if you leave him?

Neither of those teams are what I would call form teams at the moment though. I'd go KDB but there is a risk he plays goalkeeper or leftback or something. Mane/Salah I said above. Ings is against one of the best defences in the league this season. Alli is in an out-of-form team (although I think they will pick up with Kane out). I just think Vardy is a steady Eddy here.

I really think double pool defence is the best way to go. Allows a better balance in the rest of your side, the extra 5m+ can work wonders.

It definitely worked this week, 38 points from Robbo, TAA and C Salah. Obviously that’s just 1 week, but a great start.

      Hendo
      TAA Robbo Soy Lund Rico
      Salah KDB Maddison Martial Hayden
      Vardy Ings Jimmy

To switch Robbo to Mane would be very difficult for me and mean sacrifices that I don’t want to make.

I think it depends on your attitude to risk. The ceiling is far higher having Salah, Mane and TAA and as long as your TV is high you can still have a good squad behind that triple up. I think both options are sound. I’m personally going with Salah, Mane and TAA.

Liverpool are 12-0 over the last 5 league games. In those games Salah has 45pts, Mane 31pts (from 4 games), TAA a colossal 45pts and Robertson a more than solid 32pts (from 4 starts).

Spurs are absolutely terrible and have a long injury list including their talisman and almost all of their full backs. Center backs are slow and weak.

Why are we not auto capping Salah / Mane??

I may. For me it is the risk. Either could get a hattrick and the other a mere 2 points. I have Mane, TAA and Robbo. Vardy is a safe option who will probably get some kind of attacking return. Also, KDB is against Villa who are without Heaton but may get played deep again. I am 66-33 in favour of Vardy captain with either Mane or KDB as VC but may yet change it to Mane with Vardy as VC.

Works quite well with the Cantwell rotation as you've suggested.

Moura >> Mooy to prepare for a Maddison >> Mane upgrade in 24?

        Would mean a Mooy/Cantwell 4th/5th midfield rotation.

Yeah I like the look of Sarr

Look at Ings history and fixtures

Sure he has to stay fit but the man is on fire, doing exactly what Liverpool bought him for

2FT and 2 BOU players, get rid i say. You can paint those fixtures green but they are not green for a team that barely got any player left to play. I would change goalie.

Not enough funds to upgrade Ramsdale at the moment.

        B. Tammy & Traore to Maupay & Salah

        What to do here please...

        Henderson
        TAA Soyuncu Lundstram
        KDB Mane Salah Grealish
        Vardy Jimenez Greenwood

        McGovern Rico Kelly Dendoncker

        1FT 1.3ITB

        1. Save FT [so I have 2FT to make changes the following gameweek]
        2. Upgrade Greenwood (-4) [would need to change Rico / Kelly to free up funds to do Greenwood >> DCL
        3. Dendoncker Swap [use FT to upgrade Dendoncker to someone like Traore, Sarr, Mooy, etc... but would mean I’m priced out of changing Greenwood moving forward]

        Thanks all!

Yeah as a possibility - he takes a hit as does the other two mentioned

With villa next there could be a haul on the cards for city assets

Maybe just a straight swap to David Silva

I just noticed Brighton's fixtures and was thinking why did I choose Rams as gk on wc even though I have Rico.

        2ft 0.6itb.

        A) Rams > Ryan
        B) Other
        C) Burn ft

        Rams (Button)
        Taa Lund Rico (Aurier, Kelly)
        Salah Mane Kdb Martial Traore
        Vardy Ings (Greenwood)

Not a fan but he is alot quicker and got skills on the ball that Ancelotti prefers, and Keane got none of those. Relatively safe to assume he is nailed.
