Almost 10% of the top 10k FPL managers fail to use their first Wildcard

We take our regular look at the chip usage and player selections of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

This is our first article in the series since the deadline for using the first Wildcard passed.

Remarkably, almost one in ten of the top 10,000 FPL bosses (at the point of the Gameweek 21 deadline) didn’t use the first of their two permitted Wildcards.

World number four Michael Somers is among that number.

It’d be interesting to know why so many didn’t deploy it. Lack of a need to because of a hugely successful first half of the season? Or blissful ignorance of the rules?

Given some of the stats we have seen already on the make-up of the top 10k managers in 2019/20, it may be more the latter.

Since the deadline for Gameweek 20 passed, 2.34% have used their second Wildcard.

Around one in five have already deployed their Bench Boost this season and there is a similar usage of the Triple Captain chip, too.

Approximately one in six of the top 10k have used their Free Hit over the last five months or so.

Discounting the first Wildcard, 61.7% of the top 10,000 managers have yet to use any of their chips.

Around 15% have used at least two of their chips, however.

Approximately 50 of the top 10,000 managers have already maxed out their allocation, including the second Wildcard.

For those who have used their second Wildcard, there are some familiar names in the ‘template’ squad.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) is the most-owned player in these Wildcard sides, sitting in 93.16% of the teams in question.

Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), Sadio Mane (£12.3m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and John Lundstram (£5.1m) were also widely selected.

There was a lack of consensus between the posts, however: two of the three least-owned players in the template squad below are goalkeepers.

There are four differences from the Wildcard ‘template’ to the most-owned squad in the top 10k overall.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), Anthony Martial (£7.9m), Adama Traore (£5.6m) and Mathew Ryan (£4.8m) are the differentials of sort in the above graphic, while Nick Pope (£4.7m), Dele Alli (£8.8m), James Maddison (£7.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) are the alternatives below.

Just over half of the top 10k captained the sidelined Vardy in Gameweek 21, although there would have been some Mane or Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) vice-captainers amongst that select group who emerged with a 16 or 20-point haul.

Looking in greater detail at the main candidates for the armband in the top 10k below, Salah was the only one who hit a double-digit haul.

As for how the top 10k are set up for Double Gameweek 24, the ownerships for a selection of the various Liverpool double-up and triple-up combinations are currently as follows:

CombinationOwnership
Salah + Mane5.82%
Salah + Alexander-Arnold13.3%
Salah + Robertson1.71%
Mane + Alexander-Arnold58.75%
Mane + Robertson9.54%
Salah + Mane + Alexander-Arnold3.9%
Salah + Mane + Robertson0.19%
Salah + Robertson + Alexander-Arnold0.89%
Mane + Robertson + Alexander-Arnold4.86%

The Mane and Alexander-Arnold combination is by some distance the most popular double-up, while relatively few FPL managers in the top 10k have already lumped on three Liverpool assets (there are other combinations beyond the above, of course).

We’ll surely see those figures rise considerably ahead of Gameweek 24, however.

Any advice on this team??? I ft and 0.8 itb.

    Is it stupid benching Robertson?

    Henderson
    TAA Lund Digne
    Salah martial (c) KDB traore
    Vardy ings Jimenez

    Robertson aurier Cantwell

Had a decent rank rise lately but not sure if double pool def with Salah is the way to go or start moving money out of defence to get mane in later?

    Thanks

Bench Digne or Traore and play Robertson imo.
I am sticking with Robertson and Salah and getting TAA in for the double if I have the cash. If not VVD will do.
      Good luck anyway.

Bench Traore. He is not capable to have more than 5 points vs non top 6 team.

I want to thank TM for some fantastic FPL advice earlier today.

When faced with a tough benching decision, look at ownership.

Which players can do some real damage to your rank if left on your bench?

I think there are better options for your third Pool for GW 24. If funds are an issue (As they are with me), add TAA/Robbo/VVD and go two at the back. Firmino is very inconsistent... and of course, as I say that I just noticed his price increased, so what the heck to I know...

Looking ahead at gw 23, trying to decide which LFC asset to get between robbo or mane?

    Guitar, McGovern

Best use of three transfers to DGW24:

    1. Aurier, Grealish & Jimenez > Robertson, Noble & Haller = 5 x DGW’ers

    2. Aurier, KdB, Jimenez > Williams/Simpson, Salah & Haller = 4 x DGW’ers

Already have Mane & TAA. Will TC Mane.

I wouldn't go Haller or Noble tbh. Don't rate their fixtures enough or haller himself. would rather Delu or DCL with the solid fixture and for long term. I'll be likely just doing TAA, Robo and Mane

Will plan to do Haller > Delu/DCL week after....I always try and load up on DGW’ers, yah never know....

I’m leaning towards Mane, TAA, Robertson as will make choice of TC easier (Mane) and not flick-flak with Salah all week and then regret when I get it wrong 😀

Also think Robertson is most nailed of all Liverpool big 6/7 players. Who’s his competition, any idea?

It’s hard to say without knowing the rest of your team structure, transfers available, money in the bank, etc. Assuming you are looking for Pool for GW 24, I’d actually consider holding what you have and then making the move next week or the week after, but again, tough to say without context.

    For gw24:

    A) Salah, Aurier, Holgate

    B surely?

    1. A Fat Spanish Waiter
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 9 Years

What does the rest of your team look like? At first blush, B is better I think. I have the same issue trying to get a third Liverpool player, but 2 at the back is going to be easier from a team structure perspective than 2 attack. That said, Pool’s fixtures from 25 on are great.

      1. Tsparkes10
        • 5 Years

        Yh exactly mate.

        Hendo
        TAA Perreira Lund
        KDB Mane Martial Alli
        Vardy Maupay ings
        (Martin, Cantwell, Rico, Aurier)

Thinking For B I can simply do Alli, Aurier to Sarr, Robo. Still leaves me about 1m itb. So thinking I downgrade Perreira in 25 and then upgrade maupay or martial. Something like that. Salah move means I have more or less nothing itb and stuck with one of maupay and Cantwell every week.

Totally agree, and my strategy is similar. Martial is actually looking pretty good. I have a microscope on him given he is made of glass (went home with an illness today, I understand), but they have a decent run of fixtures. Never know, might be able to ride him for a while. Plus a Man Untied starting striker at that price isn’t bad, no how terrible they might be this season.

Hmmm, i face a bit of a dilemma. Since WC’ing (had to), i switched from having both Salah and Mane to two Pool defenders and kept Mane.
I can’t moan at the results, and i like the set up.
However, after hanging on to Both Salah and Mane for all that time, could i have made a mistake not sticking with them for this DGW?

    Fabianski
    TAA - Evans - Robertson
    KDB - Martial - Mane - Maddison
    Rashford - Vardy - DCL
    ____________________________
    Button: Lundstram: Kiko: Dendoncker

Can’t say i will do anything yet, and see how the games/players do, but if, and only IF i do decide to go back to double pool mids, do these moves sound reasonable if i were to do it?

    Robertson + Martial + Rashford >> Dunk + Salah + Ings

Just trying to give myself an option in case i do revert back for DGW.

Reasonable moves apart from the fact Man u play Burnley at home in 24 and could easily match Salah or Mane tbh. I also think if you get rid of Robo or TAA you'll create the same problem and be annoyed if you get rid of the one who doesn't haul etc.

I'm thinking double defence now cause the options bottom of last page look so much better as a whole.

Currently have taa and sals and I'm in the same boat. Get either robbo or mane. Either way it's a good option.
If robbo, then have more cash to invest elsewhere and might not be to far behind mane points wise every game week, however, there are other defenders that can do well.
If mane then huge attacking threat and as west ham fan I annually cringe at the liverpool fixture as they regularly score at least 3.
Not sure I've helped your dilemma, but I'm swinging towards mane.
Liverpool have a real swagger and confidence now that I've not seen before and they look like they'll dominate anyone.

No there’s some good raised points there cheers bud, they do look extremely confident in front of any team now you’re right.
My only squabble is i’m not seeing pool leathering teams with 4 or 5 goals a game, all seems to be 2-0’s and stuff, but that’s not to say that won’t happen in future.
Say i did go for it, i can only captain one mid, and my god i got that wrong every time in 15GW’s of owning them lol!

After the club world cup they thumped Leicester and would have scored more against Sheffield if not for hendo's heroics. They seem so confident now and to make it worse for us the clean sheets seem to have returned. If they're getting more attacking returns then robbo and taa will be involved for sure. I'm gonna wait and see how the spurs game goes before any changes. But your absolutely right, it will be a captain headache for sure. Tough decisions for all of us I think. Take a deep breath and relax bro.
Robbo Taa Mane is in my team too. Very happy with them.

Cheers Amey! I will, think it might of just been a small panic and a ‘what can i do IF’ such and such happens etc etc haha.
I’m very happy with the same trio, Robbo and TAA easily capable of hauls also. I can’t see myself changing it tbh, i like the setup too much, and yours and all the comments make good sense.

Don't 2nd guess it. The Mane, TAA, Robbo axis is sound.

I’m on Trent, Robbo and Salah.

Double pool definitely the way to go imo. Gives the rest of your team more flexibility. Going Mane and Salah causes too many sacrifices elsewhere.
