Meet the Manager #19 – Pranil Sheth (Lateriser12)

Among ProPundit Pranil Sheth‘s standout phrases when he discusses his stellar Fantasy Premier League career is, “hit home, hit hard”.

Making high-impact decisions quickly, around form and fixtures, is how Pranil has achieved the remarkable feat of two top 200 finishes and has never completed a campaign outside the top 50K in his last seven seasons.

The pinnacle of this remarkable run was his finish of 77th in 2015/16 and reaching the dizzy heights at one point during the 2012/13 season of 22nd, before finishing in 189th spot.

Over these campaigns, he has ruthlessly focused on ensuring he has the best chance of beating those around him with strong, often low-owned, premium options that can better the game’s popular picks each week.

A case in point was this season when he successfully backed Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah with the armband over runaway favourite Jamie Vardy.

During his chat with Joe, Pranil reveals why he is happy to take hits as he looks to take out his opponents swiftly. Bold moves are also needed for success when reaching the very highest rank spots, he explains.

Such is his commitment to FPL that he took a break during the 2014/15 campaign to spend time setting up his business. Embarking on a season not fully focused on FPL is simply not an option for Pranil.

Elsewhere, he explains why his ranks were so bad at the start of his FPL career in 2008 and why friendly rivalry took precedent back then.

He also pays tribute to this site and its community for helping with his recent success.

I already have TAA & Salah.

Which combo looks best for GW24?

    A) Ryan, Robertson, Sarri & Rashford
    B) McCarthy, Webster, Mane & DCL (-4)

Liverpool triple up is expensive.. Not worth it long term imo. And they play Spurs and United next.

I know it's early, but how do people see Liverpool vs Utd going? Wondering whether it's worth pulling the trigger on Salah & the Pool triple a week early. Man Utd looked abject last night, but they're very unpredictable this season & seem to up their game against the bigger teams.

I wouldn't. Form goes out the window when united and Liverpool play. Liverpool seem to struggle vs united. I think they will win, but I wouldn't be in a rush to transfer out a player with a better fixture

    Current team:

    Gazza Button
    TAA Soy Lundy Kelly Rico
    Salah KdB Martial Grealish Hayden
    Vardy Rash Jimi

    2 ft and 2m

    Which plan is better?

    A.
    Gw 22 Gazza to Fabianski/Ryan
Gw 23 Martial to one week punt (Mahrez/Pepe/Maddison/Moura)
Gw 24 Jimi and punt to Greenwood and Mane

    B.
    Gw 22 Gazza to Fabianski/Ryan

  6. What is your management style and how has it evolved?

So in the chat with Joe here, i've spoken a lot about general style of playing. Though there is no fixed style of playing since it is such a dynamic game, there are always certain practices that FPL managers have.

My question to you is how has your game evolved over the years? What has worked for you and what hasn't? What is your current style? I'm keen to hear that and am looking at how different managers approach the game.

One big thing i missed out in the chat is that no one has the right to get every decision right. It is a game that has a lot of luck involved so don't get too bogged by when things don't go your way. It's just a game after all.

I don't have a style of play. I just do the transfers I feel makes most sense. So far that has gotten me a top 17k and top 15k finish in my first two seasons.

I like to ask for advice on this site, but most of the times I go with my gut feeling in the end.

I'm a big believer in building TV in the 1st half of the season, which means I sometimes have to jump on early transfers to avoid price changes. I experimented with changing this up last season & tried to exercise a bit more patience, but this (coupled with my disastrous decision to gamble my chips in SGWs) resulted in my worst finish in a good few years. I'm back to tried & tested strategies this season.

Had a poor 1st half of the season, but I'm up to 30k now with all chips intact & well placed in my cash MLs, so so far, so good.

I used to have a style. It was go with gut and get a player no matter what. Be ruthless, take hits, and get ahead of the curve. Now I’m very reserved and it’s to my detriment. Maybe I don’t care as much any more.

I think maybe you don't care because you're reserved. Throw some instinct moves in there.

very much the same as Rupert. Gungho to a bit more reserved. Still hit the top1% preseason target last 9 years.
Only top 100 was one of my more aggressive seasons -
        76pts in hits 🙂
also there's a time factor. Just can't give up as much time as some seem to to analyze the data mountains. Stick pretty much with the indicators I've always used.
One constant weakness has been stubborness/ blind spots with certain players (usually bandwagons).
Rashford a good example this season. Every time I've watched utd I just see an ordinary team and can't see him maintaining his FPL points. Interesting that his ownership really didn't take off until he had already scored 10 in 16 games. Since then it's 2 in 6.
Normally that 10 in 16 would have had a lot more interest.

You know my strategy Lateriser...been the same for several years.

I take a hit a week by seasons end (38 hits) and play to win a very small family three man mini league where the other two can do as they like. Three man mini leagues offer the best cat and mouse picks where deciding when to align and differentiate are key to winning by seasons end. Not bothered about OR.

I tend to wildcard fairly early - generally the 1st international break after evaluating how the teams and players are performing.

I build up team value in the 1st half of the season - sometimes taking hits to move onto players who look in form with good fixtures, but try to avoid bandwagons on players who have a history of poor returns. That said, I've only taken 3 hits so far.

In the second half of the season I try to play more conservatively and avoid hits, whilst using my higher team value to put a team in every week which should have an advantage based upon price alone.

Team value is 107.5 and selling value is 103.8. Perhaps that's not extremely high - but nor should it be - because there is always a balance to play between taking hits to jump on players early and trying to get as many points as possible moving forwards.

I'm just outside the top 20k by the way.

Thats a pretty impressive TV, allowing you to get plenty of premiums in.

I thought mine at 105.6 seemed decent in comparison to others in my ML's, but i dont put too much importance on tv.

My strategy has always been patient, holding players longer than 1/2 weeks and avoiding hits as much as possible. I try to plan my transfers ahead of time to make this happen. Also spend way too much time thinking about decisions and reading the site!!
Top 4k in 2016/7 & 2017/8 and finished 150 last season so it appears to work pretty well.

Just had less time this year and seems alot of 50/50's (captain calls etc) havent gone so well this season. Currently ranked 326k, so onwards and upwards!!

Sure - I think I'm having my best season ever, but luck is also involved heavily in this game. There are definitely worse players outperforming me and better players down at the 1 million rank. I just hope that a higher team value can bring more options and more 'luck' in the 2nd half of the season.

Honestly though I'd have no problem if the game got rid of Captain choice and chips. They do add a strategic element, but they also add a fair amount of luck to the game. It gives everyone a chance to 'catch up'.

To clarify a bit further, I won't jump on a player who is rising in value if I think my team will be worse off because of it. It will almost always be because I want that player and don't want the one I'm getting rid of - but I won't hesitate to take a hit in order to make that happen.

My style was to have a core of most sought players and have 2 or 3 differentials. I asked for advice here and followed them almost 70% of the time. That way I finished 3K and 12K in two consecutive seasons. Now, I started to think I became a great player 😀 and started to jump over and play ahead of the curve. I tried looking for differential captains and emerging prospects. This is where the downfall started. FFS community isn't too big but I didn't like to go with the herd. I think becoming a sheep isn't too bad when managers here have brilliant records as you do. Will try that for the second half of the season and see if I cover lost ground 😛

It can feel like being a sheep on here, without being a sheep in the greater context of the game. There are some great ideas on this site which are not known about for maybe 95% of the players in general. That being said, there are bad ideas on this site too - and this is where we need to make our own judgements or try to dig deeper into stats.

This plan is very good and safe imo and it's not as easy as it sounds but i have a feeling that this strategy is kinda boring and won't lead you to something really special at the end of the year unless you go with some mavrick/creative and risky plan/transfers.

When I started playing fantasy I didnt know much about it. Didnt have twitter or site like this so made a lot of mistakes like picking defensive mids, make a lot of hits etc.
But since I start playing "serious" my style defo changed.
Main thing is that Im more patient. My moves arent nervous, I reduced number or hits and Im not scared (that much) of players that I dont own as I used to as it was like "grass is always greener.." type of thing.
I usually have longer term plan and if nothing major happens I try to stick to it as it usually works for me. I make changes step by step as in previous seasons I was buying some players too fast, sometimes for hits cuz I wanted perfect team now, I couldnt wait 1-2 games which most of time was mistake.
Like you I usually go with my instinct after watching MoTD and I know just after GW finishes who I want to got and who to sell. Sometimes do my moves early, sometimes wait till presser but almostcalways stick to my oryginal plan/tgoughts.
Also I reduced number of hits (2 this season which was long term moves at begginig of season) so now almost every week have 2FT. Sometimes use just one and sometimes 2 which means bank FT next GW.
I never buy player just for 1 game "cuz he has nice fix". That doesnt work for me.
I also spend less time thinkering. That was killing me. Now I dont try to be too clever. Just go simple as my instinct tell me.

A few that spring to mind:

      1) Learn not to be stubborn when you make a mistake. I removed TAA before Liverpool played Leicester as a way to generate funds to bring Salah in for free the following week. No-one could have predicted his 24 point haul, but I quickly realised it was a mistake, and so I brought TAA straight back in as a hit (along with Salah and Grealish). A stubborn player may have stuck to their guns and not gone with TAA.

      2) Generally speaking, give each transfer you make a 4-6 week period to perform. You brought them in for a reason - probably a fixture run and/or underlying stats, so try to give them that time to perform. Don't knee-jerk after a week.

      3) Keep your money on the pitch, and don't give yourself a benching headache every week. I see people having to decide who to bench between Ings and Grealish, for example. 6.5m is too much to be sitting on your bench every week.

      4) There's a very fine line between over-managing your team, and going for 'maverick' transfers. I'll use my TAA example again. I had 2 FTs going into that Leicester game and didn't know what transfer to make, but I knew I wanted Salah in soon. TAA was my makeweight/'maverick' out transfer to generate funds. But in hindsight, that was over-management as TAA is clearly a season-keeper. Tread this line very carefully.

Tldr: Management style has gone from aggressive to balanced approach. One change during this 7-8 years I have noticed is that now the main focus is "WHO to pick" which used to be "HOW to pick".

Being more of a national football fan, initially I didnt had much knowledge of club football, by that I mean which player plays in what position and what teams are good/bad. So it took around a year to get used to that and how ESPN fantasy works.

Then came to know about FPL and couple of sites including this one. Due to lack of knowledge, I used to think that everyone on fantasy site must be knowing more than me, so by default I used to follow the trend but it was frustrating/boring to this.

Gradually things got better and I was able to make decisions on my own. So it was HIT time! -8/-12 were all normal. After couple of more years this game got pretty boring, maybe due to lack of friendly mine leagues or desire to finish high. I'm surprised to see so many who have been playing this game for more than 10years or so.

To keep things interesting, I have been playing with a rule/restriction of "One player from one country", probably wont result in good ranks but it feels better.

      - Very patient
      - Percentages intrigue me once the gameweeks started. It's good to know what to root for once the gameweeks started, but largely unaffected by it in advance.
      - Hate all "truths" about how to play the game. There's more than one way to skin a cat. These truths are there to be exploited.
      - Very rarely see oppurtunities where a hit should pay off. This might be one of my weaknesses.
      - Will always go with likelyhood no matter how common or uncommon the decision is.

This is my ninth season. Initially played as a casual with moderate success, always finishing between 100k and 350k for 5 seasons. There wasn't much strategy at this point, just going with gut feeling and basing decisions on what I'd seen on match of the day and the odd live fixture.

Discovered FFScout about halfway through the 2015/16 season. The last 3 seasons have seen me record my best 3 ever finishes, despite the increased amount of players playing the game, so its fair to say FFScout has been a massive positive influence on my game. Why? Probably due to them distributing stats, paying attention to how managers better than me play the game, their detailed scout notes and articles and the various strategies discussed, which have caused me to plan ahead further than I ever used to.

Last season I started to use stats a lot more, in particular using expected goals and assists data to assess who was in and out of form and to assess fixture difficulty more accurately. Using point projections also came into it too. This worked well and got me to my best ever finish.

In terms of play style I would say I am a patient manager (sometimes overly so), use stats (mainly expected goals/assist), and plan ahead, being mindful of fixtures to come. I am halfway through listening to your MTM podcast Lateriser, really enjoying it and the points you make. I do tend to play safe with captaincy and I think I could bring into my game looking for those opportunities to captain someone different, I did start to do this a little over xmas, captaining Vardy away to City which worked really well, and Pukki at Norwich which worked less well, fortunately I wasn't punished for that latter punt.

One thing I would be interested in hearing is how far back people go using stats to inform future performance? For example, I think a lot of points projection models out there use data from the whole season, which makes sense to an extent as the larger the sample size the more accurate the model, in theory. However, I believe that this method has an inherent "lag" built into it which makes these models cumbersome and slow to respond to recent upturns (or indeed downturns) in form and or changes in circumstance. On a lot of the FFScout videos and articles they use "last 4 gameweeks" as a basis of stats instead. Is this because using last 4 gameweeks stats only is a more accurate predictor of future points? Has anyone quantified or modelled which method is more accurate? I think this is my biggest area for improvement, as I tend to hang onto players too long (i.e. Pukki) and not bring in new assets whose form has improved (i.e. Alli when Mou arrived).

Stats based on the last four game weeks is probably intended to capture the most recent variables: change in formation, rotation, injury, etc. Using only two game weeks is probably not sufficient for establishing any meaningful data. If you can provide the data in a csv format, I'll model it. The more data, the better.

I use 2-4-6 weeks to judge form and combine it with subjectivity. No more.

My style is not having a particular style.

I do NOT want to be bound by a certain way or arbitrary rule that I put on myself ie (no hits, no bandwagons, no Man Uniteds... etc).

I can find myself conservative for 2-3 weeks, focusing on form, and not caring about TV

2-3 weeks later, IF IT MAKES sense, ill take hits, build value, and maybe focus on fixtures.

      My approach/style differs by:
      1) Season
      2) Gameweek
      3) Player. (some players have a tendency to over/under perform stats by huge margins. IE Vardy)
      4) Mood. Did I have my breakfast? Do i REALLLLLY need Otamendi or am I just drunk? (transferred him in after several NYE drinks.... took me forever to remember who friggin got him into my team)

Just LEARN all styles and tools, and use them wisely! That and some luck, and you are a good candidate to finish 1st!

        A) Rarely ask for advice
        B) Take calculated risks rather than punts
        C) Play aggressive
        D) Use forum group think as a guide of where best to deviate
        E) For the most part avoid forums when games are active and soon after they finish.
        F) Don't allow myself to become bogged down with planning. Initial thoughts are generally my better ones.
        G) Make a plan and stick to it irrespective of gw results or captain success
        H) Be extremely careful about who's advice to listen to on the rare occasions I ask.

Most important ones this year are
-As always, don't only make decisions based on statistics without watching games (eye test) ... I didn't have abraham all season based on this strategy

        - don't read those match reports and watch highlights/replays

        - when you need a strong opinion about player, go to team's forums, it may help you and also for team news instead of listening to those twitter fu***

        - don't get affrected by ffs crowd when they jump on a player or do the same transfer based on nothing like grealish and traore move ( i do it sometimes. Lol)

        - if team looks good and all moves make sense i wouldn't care much about OR, points will come sooner or later as my plan was based on something logical at least from my point of view not someone else.

        - don't brag too much or complain about your OR because not all of us have the same goals at the end of the season... Now i'm on top 5k which is pretty good but if i eneded in top 5k i don't think i will be happy with that as my last two seasons i have ended in top 65 and 325 OR so it depends on each one's target.

I really enjoyed your interview btw and Excuse my english if there's something wrong.

About style 3-5-2 with cheap strikers and good mids did well for me.
Always try to play my own game not bothered about ownership.
22k,18k and 8k last 3 seasons when i learn more how this game works and cut down on hits a little.

Dont like dull approach too boring and feels like you dont play the game, game plays you.

Didnt owned Lei players this season, captain picks were not so good and differentials didnt work well.

Anyway still 90k OR thanks to Salah last few GWs and hope he can continue.

Being my 2nd year of taking it "serious" in terms of being a member on this site and spending a lot more time on fpl.

One thing I've noticed is my "style" of how I play the game all depends on the start I have made.

I made a great start last season with gw1 score of 19k, had all the popular players from the beginning. Going without Salah at Christmas really derailed all that good work and finished 60k in the end.

This season a more modest start, sitting in the 100s thousands. Played my wildcard 2 gameweeks ago and feel I'm well set for second half of the season.

        Currently 28k fwiw

      Salah KDB Moura Mount Cantwell
      Aguero C Vardy

      Martin Rico Greenwood Aurier

      A) Aurier to Soyuncu/Evans
      B) Aurier to Stephens (this makes it easier to get Mane in for the double)
      C) Guaita to 5.3 gk
      D) Moura or Mount out?

Who should make way for Mane ahead of 24?
      a) Madisson?.
      b) Grealish?
      .
      My front line looks like:
      Salah, KDB, Alli, Madisson, Grealish
      Vardy, Ings, DCL
      .
Note: Alli is a must go option. Looking for his partner, lol

          Cheers mates!!

Madisson is a gold, I know but Grealish's number ten role and going without Mane in DGW are of great concern.

I was on Vardy (C) all week long but thinking of changing it to KDB (C).

Do we think he will get another run in the DM position against Vila? If not, he is an easy choice for the armband.

With Silva back KDB (C) feels like an unnecessary gamble.

I have KDB and I'm on Vardy cap with Salah v/c. I think KDB will slot into central midfield behind 3 of Sterling/Dilva/Mahrez/Bilva.

As many of us try are figuring out how to get to 3 Liverpool and mane and salah being a popular double up. Who are you sacrificing?

I have to reluctantly sell one of Grealish or Maddo to get Alli to Mane. I only need to shave 0.7 which brings Sarr or Traoré into play. Who would you ditch if stuck with the same dilemma?

I'd sell Grealish in your scenario. Personally though, I prefer the defensive double-up as I don't see a huge amount of goals in either game and feel TAA and Robbo could outscore Salah/Mane. I'm even considering using TC on TAA.

I have sacrificed 3 spots in my team by picking cheap options, two mids and one forward. But soon I'll be getting rid of Kevin for cash, current downgrades are temporary.

I would ditch Grealish. Maddison plays for a better team, slightly better fixtures as well. Plus if it goes wrong, you can always change Maddison to Grealish with 1FT.

On same dilemma who to sacrifice between Grealish & Maddo to get Mane. Probably, I will wait for this week and the next to get a clearer picture
