Aubameyang red card masks Arsenal progress under Arteta

Crystal Palace 1-1 Arsenal

Goals: Jordan Ayew (£5.0m) | Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m)

Assists: Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.9m) | Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m)

Bonus Points: Ayew x3 Kouyate x2 Aubameyang x1

Jordan Ayew (£5.0m) rescued a point for Crystal Palace against a dogged, and arguably unlucky, Arsenal.

Fantasy managers looking for further evidence of Mikel Arteta’s benign influence on the Gunners found it in abundance during the first half at Selhurst Park.

The visitors controlled the match up until the break, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) giving them a deserved lead when he produced a no-nonsense finish from Alexandre Lacazette‘s (£9.3m) astute pass.

Arsenal under their new manager are already a mile away from the disjointed mess they were towards the end of Unai Emery’s reign, with left-back Sead Kolasinac‘s (£5.2m) frequent forays down the flank covered by Granit Xhaka (£5.1m) and the entire team defending as a unit when required.

But a combination of the high wind and Palace’s standard obduracy meant the Gunners couldn’t turn their early fluency into a second goal.

And everything changed after half-time.

The influential Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) had to be replaced at the break, with Arteta’s initial diagnosis a vague one.

“It looks like (an injury). He had to come off at half-time. I don’t know (what it is). I’ll have to check with the doctor.” – Mikel Arteta

What did become clear was how well Torreira and Xhaka had nullified Palace’s midfield, because without the Uruguayan, Arsenal struggled to contain their hosts, who were level within ten minutes of the restart.

Cheikhou Kouyaté (£4.9m) fed Ayew, whose shot took a big deflection off David Luiz (£5.7m) on its way past Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

Things then turned from bad to worse for Arsenal when Aubameyang was shown a red card, following an intervention by VAR, for a challenge on Max Meyer (£5.2m) that might have been lacking in malice, but was definitely mistimed and decidedly ugly.

The Arsenal coach had no complaints with the decision.

“I just watched it and it looked nasty, to be fair. Knowing Auba, there’s no intention to make such a tackle. Hopefully, he hasn’t been injured and we are sorry for that. The decision was made and we have to accept it.” – Mikel Arteta

His Palace counterpart, Roy Hodgson, was not so hopeful that Meyer had escaped without injury.

“The position of his ankle as the challenge comes in is not a pleasant thing to see. I’d be very surprised if there isn’t any ligament damage there, but we won’t know that until Monday.” – Roy Hodgson

Pre-Arteta Arsenal might well have crumbled after the dismissal, but there was none of that at Selhurst Park.

They rode their luck when a looping header from James Tomkins (£5.0m) had to be cleared off the line, but even better chances came at the other end, with Nicolas Pépé (£9.1m) seeing his shot brilliantly tipped onto the post by Vicente Guaita (£5.1m), who then bravely saved the rebound at Lacazette’s feet.

A win would probably have flattered the Gunners, but their defensive solidity was generally impressive – Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m) did a particularly good job keeping Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) very quiet – and their front three are likely to prosper against less well-drilled opponents.

Unfortunately for Fantasy managers, the most in-form of that trio, Aubameyang, won’t be adding to his three goals from the last four Gameweeks as he’ll now be suspended for the next three matches.

Arsenal have a very attractive long-term schedule, but investing in their improved defence still feels risky on the evidence of Arteta’s first three league games in charge.

Lacazette and Pepe might step up in the absence of Aubameyang, but Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) was little more than a bit-part player against Palace.

As for Roy Hodgson’s side, their defenders remain the best bet for points as they embark on a good eight-match run during which the first fixture, away at Manchester City, is by far and away the toughest test.

Zaha continues to be a misfiring luxury, while new loan signing Cenk Tosun (£5.7m) was starved of service during his 22-minute debut – a state of affairs he will probably have to get used to when playing for a side who’ve managed a league-worst 213 attempts this season.

Crystal Palace XI (4-5-1): Guaita; Riedewald, Cahill, Tomkins, M Kelly; Zaha, McCarthy, McArthur, Kouyaté, Meyer (Tosun 68′); Ayew.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Kolasinac, D Luiz, Sokratis, Maitland-Niles; Xhaka, Torreira (Guendouzi 46′); Aubameyang, Özil (Martinelli 70′), Pépé; Lacazette (Nelson 90+2′).

Next 3 not great fixtures for Ings, who else is considering holding off on bringing him in? Jimi to Ings very tempting though...

Wolves home looks good, they can´t keep cs, Palace ravage by injuries, Liverpool tough. Could bench him vs Pool. And the most important, Southampton are in good form. Jimenez is a good pick, but not sure i would want him in that fixture run, even if Wolves are good vs top sides. But the price diff is not that big anymore so understand the hesitation.

How do we assess United assets now? Mixed fixtures and look like the easiest route to more Liverpool attackers. But they could punish sellers in GW24 against Burnley.

Rashford has 7G 2A in the 8 games he’s already played this season against his next 8 opponents, only blanking in 2 of the 8 fixtures (Watford & Everton) & also on pens/DFK’s - despite utd being a dumpster fire all season the kid is FPL gold

Martial is a striker OOP as a mid - he’s no Rashford but he’s quite decent value

I know they’re both good picks, but dropping both is the only way for me to get Salah and Mane. If I keep them then I have to go for double defence.

Do you fancy Salah & Mane to haul? I personally don’t see Wolves or West Ham as whipping boys based on the eye test so not hugely excited by the DGW for them

Martial is a much easier sell than Rashford, but still not sure he’s a good sell - could easily notch good points with BUR, WOL approaching, and Liverpool away could contain surprises too

Liverpool attackers can haul against anyone. I don’t view West Ham as revitalised under Moyes, they’re still bad imo.

Wolves will probably concede a couple to Spurs.

They certainly can, I just saw Wolves reserves contain them so well at anfield 2 weeks ago so don’t hold high hopes of a hammering at molineux

Likewise since Moyes came in the amount of harrying, running, tracking, pressing that West Ham have been doing has increased exponentially- they were very unlucky to concede vs SHU & I don’t see them gifting 3 or 4 big chances to anyone at the minute hence not bowled over by those DGW fixtures (fab injury may soften things a bit - but aside from martins mistake they were the better side vs SHU)

But for sure Pool can haul vs anyone - leciester was a good example, although bizarrely in that 4 goal win, Salah & Mane only got 9 points between them!

With Gomez & Allison back the defence, and the defence’s FPL output, has been so good - back to 2018/19 levels thankfully

I would say: Rashford great, Martial good - neither easy sells, but Martial an easi-ER sell than Rash

*although the members area actually has West Ham down as giving SHU 4 big chances... I watched the game and struggle to hunk of what those were (Martin mistake aside)

Big chances as they’re captured in the data are a bit dodgy - mcgoldrick has 2 in GW1 with a combined XG of only 0.37 for those 2 big chances example - on the eye test, West Ham made things difficult for SHU and didn’t look like the whipping boys we all want to be targeting for FPL points

The reasons West Ham seem an easy target are Roberto and David Martin.

Fabianski was only injured 24 hours ago though - and people have been targeting West Ham for 7-10 days before that and after the Moyes appointment - when you watch their 90 minutes under Moyes versus BOU & SHU it’s hard to see a team that will concede large numbers of goals

Whereas if Pellegrini was still in charge that would be very different, with more chance of a “hammering” (badoom-tish!)

I do think Liverpool will beat them, but I don’t see it as a drubbing - that’s just what I’m seeing though - who knows what will happen!

A big chance for McGoldrick doesn’t count as a big chance.

Imagine what Salah and Mane could do against Martin.

I know, I know lol they could hattrick vs anyone they’re that good...

I just couldn’t knowingly target the double GW double 25.0 midfielder combo having watched West Ham vs BOU & SHU & the wolves game at anfield - I just don’t see one sided hammerings based on the visual evidence, many (many!) people disagree with that position though so you could be in good company with the Salah/Mané double up 🙂

                    Good luck!

In times of indecision it can be good to do a gut check - even just to have as a reference in future - What is your gut telling you?

Yeah the 25.0 double attack went down in my estimation when Mo & Mane got 9 points between them in a 4-0 away win at leciester... yesterday didn’t do much to change my mind 🙂

The return of Allison & the removal of lolvren has coincided with a welcome return to all three of the defenders scoring at a 200-point a season rate the last few games though, which has been lovely

            The advantages of double attack:
            - More upside and explosive potential. I don’t pick players because they’re differentials but this could seriously propel you up the rankings.
            - I have Lundstram and Soyuncu, so two defenders means I’d have to bench one of them (of course could trade Soy for one of the defenders)
            - Gives another captaincy option for the next 10 weeks as one or the other goes out of form

I did Rashford to Tammy to afford an Alli to Mane upgrade. I can see the wisdom of keeping Rashford, but always feel Utd are two games away from a crisis and Tammy has had a little uptick in form lately that I think has been overlooked (or passed over for other priorities), especially by the higher rankers.

Especially for low team value managers like me it makes sense but then bur and WHM next are crazy good matches. Also Vardy has very high conversion so stats necessarily dont matter, he could have had double digit score yday if it wasnt for 10cm offside

          • 14 Years

Don’t agree with that either, unless you hold injury against him 🙂

In the last 5 GW’s he’s missed 2 games with injury, and played two of the other 3 against city & Liverpool - And still has 2 returns from those 3 games - I’m fine with that from a 9.0 😉

Leicester made a big mistake yesterday by showing all 9 goals from the earlier game on repeat on he big screen while Southampton warmed up on h epitaph and it pulled an even better effort out of he entire Southampton XI as a result (an XI who already don’t need encouragement)

Vardy was one return away from another double figure score, finished his disallowed goal superbly, and his assist for Praet was majestic

This feels eerily like GW9 when we were discussing his forward looking prospects versus his backward looking output 😉

How bad were Spurs vs Liverpool? I am asking this as when Spurs face out of sorts Norwich, Liverpool have DGW. For most, Spurs will be funding the Liverpool triple ups. Worth the risk or its time to kill Lei cover?

They looked a lot better when Jose made whatever tactical change he did with about 20 minutes left - how they didn’t score at least 1 I’ll never know

But for most of the game they sat way back and tried to hit Liverpool on the break - not sure they’ll be able to do that against anyone other than maybe pool or city

Can't have everyone. Pick and choose your battles. Chelsea vs Arsenal so maybe but Martial vs Burnley

Guess I should go with projections table? Have been let down with it before though.

Rashford has made things difficult hasn’t he.
I don’t own him. But tempted to bring him in. But he would make my team very unbalanced, as I already own Salah and Mane.

I may just have to roll with what I have and hope for the best

Monitor how he goes v Liverpool...

He seems to just always be in the goals when MU are scoring

He always scores vs bigest teams Dont think its right way to monitor

Thanks. Yeah, that’s my concerns. But united as a team just don’t seem to click often enough.
How many more penalties can United have really?!

It’s two steps forward one step back currently...

I think they will really struggle v Liverpool, can see Klopp wanting to make a point and it could be embarrassing

For that price he is too inconsistent and so is Manutd. I personally think that Rash only played well as it was 200th match and it was Norwich. Unless they bring a CM like Bruno its not worth a 9mn spot especially when even Firmino is around his price

He is fairly expensive. I don’t think it’s rashdord himself that is inconsistent. It’s the whole team.
Penalties in his locker doesn’t help matters - United seem to get a ton of penalties this season.

I think he’s arrived as a 10.0+ big hitter to be honest

Monopolising pens & DFKs raises his floor quite a bit & he’s turned into one of the most consistent players in the game in terms of raw FPL points scoring he’s returned in nearly two thirds of his games this season

And he’s just casually generating Salah/Mané/KDB/Vardy-level points output in an absolute shambles of a team

    Henderson
    TAA Soyuncu Lundstram Rico
    KDB Mane Salah Grealish
    Vardy Ings

    McGovern Greenwood Dendoncker Kelly

    1FT 2.1ITB

    1. Greenwood >> DCL
    2. Dendoncker >> Cantwell
    3. Kelly >> Digne
    4. Save FT

    Cheers all!
