Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 23?

The captaincy debate for Gameweek 23 of Fantasy Premier League is not proving to be as straight-forward as many would have hoped.

Manchester City blew away the competition last time out but arguably face a sterner test this time.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s defeat to Southampton was certainly a damaging one for Fantasy confidence, but a trip to Burnley provides the perfect opportunity to make amends.

And let’s not forget that Liverpool host a Manchester United side that has made a habit of frustrating their arch-rivals in recent years.

As ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help Fantasy managers make the right choice for their captaincy.

We will be assessing the key candidates based on their recent performances and compare them against the defensive showings of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up to a Membership package will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) tops the Gameweek 23 Captain Poll having accrued 31.9% of the vote.

It comes off the back of his nine-point haul in Manchester City’s 6-1 win at Aston Villa, which saw him outscore Gameweek 22’s most popular skipper Jamie Vardy (£10.0m).

De Bruyne’s latest haul ensured he goes into this weekend averaging 8.8 points per game over the last six matches.

Crystal Palace come to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon without a clean sheet since Gameweek 16 although the last time they conceded more than once on the road was at Chelsea in Gameweek 12.

In a straight swap from the Gameweek 22 poll results, it’s Vardy sitting in second place this time around.

Ahead of a trip to Burnley, the Leicester man has the support of 20% of the voters.

Despite failing to register a shot against Southampton’s revitalised defence last weekend, Vardy does have a much more appealing fixture in Gameweek 23.

The Foxes are set for a trip to Turf Moor, where Burnley have recently lost their defensive edge.

Sean Dyche’s men have played seven matches against last season’s top-six in 2019/20 conceding 23 times in the process, an average 3.3 goals per game.

While Leicester did not fit that description last season, their attack has shown it is capable of competing with the best sides in the Premier League this campaign, so it seems likely that Golden Boot front-runner Vardy will enjoy his trip to Lancashire.

Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.8m) monster haul at Aston Villa has fired him into outside consideration for the Gameweek 23 captaincy, with 12.3% of the voters lending him their backing for the visit of Crystal Palace.

It must be said that the centre-forward has only started two of the last four Gameweeks and there is another fixture coming up for Pep Guardiola’s men on Tuesday evening…

After assisting in Liverpool’s win at Spurs, Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is considered the most likely to break through Manchester United’s defence on Sunday afternoon.

The Egyptian has two double-figure hauls in his last three outings at Anfield, yielding a 6.3% backing in the captain poll.

By contrast, Mané has the support of just 3.1% of the voters despite proving more reliable at home recently.

The Senegalese international has registered attacking returns in each of his last four at Anfield, while Salah has two blanks in that time.

Raheem Sterling‘s (£11.8m) no-show against Aston Villa appears to have boosted his chances of a start against Crystal Palace, and his captain credentials in the process.

3.6% of the voters have decreed him as the best option for Gameweek 23, although his last league goal at the Etihad Stadium came against Aston Villa in Gameweek 10.

Danny Ings‘ (£6.8m) continuing form keeps on pushing him higher in the captaincy consideration. 3.2% have backed him for Southampton’s Gameweek 23 meeting with Wolves, who appear increasing threadbare and in need of January signings.

Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m), Son Heung-min (£9.8m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), Marcus Rashford (£9.2m), Neal Maupay (£5.9m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) are the only other options with more than 1% in the captain poll.

Does anyone know if Howe has mentioned Ramsdale fitness for this weekend at all?

    Thanks

Ramsdale (hamstring) has only been involved light training this week; Saturday could come too soon. Kelly (thigh) is not far away, but lacks sharpness after more than two months out. Stanislas (calf) remains sidelined and Danjuma (foot) is being treated in his homeland. #AFCB

  24. TAA for GW24 (Triple) Captain?
    Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
    • 14 Years
    4 years, 2 months ago

    Last 31 Premier League starts
    - Mane: 30 returns (21G 9A)
    - Salah: 24 returns (16G 8A)
    - TAA: 34 returns (2G 19A + 13CS)

Obviously Salah's injury period is in there... and the mids also got about +10-ish cleansheet points...

But my word TAA has been productive - even moreso than Mane in terms of his chances of generating pure FPL returns. His "ceiling" is also higher than Sistene Chapel, and with Liverpool's defensive form, his "floor" seems to have been considerably raised of late also

With two games in GW24 I think he's a definite captaincy shout - and a possible TC shout

    1. Gudjohnsen
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 2 months ago

TC is pushing it a little but certainly a Captaincy shout.

If he's a good captaincy shout, especially in a DGW, then surely he's a TC captaincy shout too?

      • 14 Years
      4 years, 2 months ago

*31 starts is an admittedly arbitrary measurement period/sample size - reason being that it start with TAA's return from injury towards final thrid of last season, since when he has been pretty immaculate as an FPL asset

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

It's in there alright but very painful to pull out - Salah is much better at home, Mane & TAA are pretty even home &away, but 5 of TAA's 34 returns came away to Leicester a few weeks ago so he has the potential to go boom in both home & away games

You could say the same for Mo with pens while milner is out though!

On pure returns I still find it staggering that he's outpacing the 12.5's

Maybe the DGW is where that comes back into line though & Mane & Mo get 4 or 5 more each to TAA's one or two...

If my back of cigarette packet maths is correct, that's 121 points for TAA and 142 for mane (ignoring Salah due to less games).

Assuming we have the choice of both for captain/TC - this still would lead me to think one of the mids is a better captain choice?

I think pre bonus and with appearance points its about 190 Mane & 180 TAA? Maths could be out there I will check in a while

But yeah I don't know what the exact FPL points goals are as I can just see returns for last season (not FPL points!)

@mods - actually is there any way of getting historical FPL points by game for seasons past added to the members area?

I for one would willingly pay double the membership fee for this, probably more 🙂

Sorry I should have clarified I meant just pure returns based on your numbers (so goals/assist/clean sheet points (4 & 1) so didn't take into account bps or appearance points.

The point I was trying to make was with captain we want absolute returns rather than ppm returns so think mids still win on this.

I have TAA & Salah was originally set on getting Robbo. I think I have a route to mane without compromising my team too badly either side of 24 so will likely do that then TC either him or Salah.

Yeah I think Mane is probably somewhere in the region of 20-ish points ahead minimum pre bonus - but for Mane-less
Teams, or any managers fancying a roll of the dice on a (relatively!) educated gamble with very high upside TAA certainly seems to fit the bill

If he was your only Pool player this week, I’d say have at it. He is absolute class after all, and is definitely rotation proof. His returns are somewhat skewed upward by the one massive haul, and I think the upside on someone like Salah, Mane or even firmino is higher, so I’ll be going that route. That said, its not a terrible choice.

One more thing, if you use the RMT tool as a guidepost, TAA is third in expected points for GW24. That isn’t bad, but the expectation is 2.5 points below the other two.

can see him getting a score at West Ham.
Think Wolves you'll be looking for attacking returns as Wolves don't often blank and certainly not at home (just twice this season Liv & Leicester away?? )

This is a weird post since it actually proves that Mane has gotten more points than TAA.

      Mane: 21*5 + 9*3 = 132
      TAA: 2*6 + 19*3 + 13*4 = 121

That doesn't even take into account Mane's clean sheet points.

When deciding captaincy value is irrelevant.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Yep, as I said, it doesn’t take into account Mané CS points (widens gap to around 25), also doesn’t take into account bonus points for either (widens gap to about 30 on this year’s bonus 12 vs 18/decreases back down to about 15-20 based on TAA’s bonus run at the end of last season), and Salah’s injury period is also in there - plus he has pens now with Milner out which elevates him further than those numbers suggest

But weird is an certainly one opinion, and for teams without Mané, and/or managers who are looking for a (relatively!) educated gamble on a very high ceiling/low floor DGW captain, or even TC, who will likely also be a differential, then they may or may now agree with its weirdness 🙂

I suppose to some it’s as weird as asking whether to play Lundstram or Holgate every couple of hours 😉

Agree, posted this a couple days ago:

Think i am talking myself into the TAA TC for gameweek 24! Away performance this season:

      Salah 8 games - 5 attacking returns (1G/4A) - 42 pts - 4 blanks
      Mane 9 games - 7 attacking returns (4G/3A) - 58 pts - 4 blanks
      TAA 10 games - 7 attacking returns (2G/5A) - 67 pts - 4 blanks + 4 CS

        Robertson: 10 away PL games - 1G/3A, 5 CS, 9 bonus points, 0 YC - 64 points - 1 blank
        TAA: 10 away PL games - 2G/5A, 4 CS, 7 bonus points, 4 YC - 67 points - 4 blanks
        Mane: 9 away PL games - 4G/3A, 4 CS, 8 bonus points, 1 YC - 58 points - 4 blanks
        Salah: 8 away PL games - 1G/4A, 2 bonus points, 0 YC - 41 points - 4 blanks

So how about Robertson as another TC candidate for DGW24?
TAA's away returns are skewed by the 24 pointer against a tired Leicester on 26th December.
That's a big up-side, but is it likely to be repeated this season?

I was actually going to pop Robbo & VVD both into the summary as they are both doing well on that same sample in terms of returns (both around the 25 mark I think) but it’s so much clicking between pages I didn’t get to it

But that’s a good spot on Robbo’s away points - and he’s been MUCH lower variance than TAA as you rightly point out

        Firmino: 10 away PL games - 7G/1A, 16 bonus points, 0 YC - 67 points - 4 blanks.
        Spoilt for choice!

Hard to believe TAA & Robbo are actually straight up out-pointing both Mane & Salah in away games this season

        That is some stat 🙂

Yup. In order to finance getting Mahrez to partner Kev, I sold Mane (keeping Salah) and got Robbo (to partner TAA). Looks the right balance - time will tell.

Well with your team it’s easy to do so because you’ve not got Salah or Mane. I think Salah is the best pick out of the bunch.

Simply don't bench Liverpool defenders. Leicester away proved that.

Spurs don't keep clean sheets very often so you are relying on attacking returns from Aurier. I have him and he's currently 2nd bench for me, getting shipped to TAA next week.

Mane - Kdb - Martial - Traore (Dendo)
    Abraham - Vardy - DCL
