Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 23?

The captaincy debate for Gameweek 23 of Fantasy Premier League is not proving to be as straight-forward as many would have hoped.

Manchester City blew away the competition last time out but arguably face a sterner test this time.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s defeat to Southampton was certainly a damaging one for Fantasy confidence, but a trip to Burnley provides the perfect opportunity to make amends.

And let’s not forget that Liverpool host a Manchester United side that has made a habit of frustrating their arch-rivals in recent years.

As ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help Fantasy managers make the right choice for their captaincy.

We will be assessing the key candidates based on their recent performances and compare them against the defensive showings of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up to a Membership package will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) tops the Gameweek 23 Captain Poll having accrued 31.9% of the vote.

It comes off the back of his nine-point haul in Manchester City’s 6-1 win at Aston Villa, which saw him outscore Gameweek 22’s most popular skipper Jamie Vardy (£10.0m).

De Bruyne’s latest haul ensured he goes into this weekend averaging 8.8 points per game over the last six matches.

Crystal Palace come to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon without a clean sheet since Gameweek 16 although the last time they conceded more than once on the road was at Chelsea in Gameweek 12.

In a straight swap from the Gameweek 22 poll results, it’s Vardy sitting in second place this time around.

Ahead of a trip to Burnley, the Leicester man has the support of 20% of the voters.

Despite failing to register a shot against Southampton’s revitalised defence last weekend, Vardy does have a much more appealing fixture in Gameweek 23.

The Foxes are set for a trip to Turf Moor, where Burnley have recently lost their defensive edge.

Sean Dyche’s men have played seven matches against last season’s top-six in 2019/20 conceding 23 times in the process, an average 3.3 goals per game.

While Leicester did not fit that description last season, their attack has shown it is capable of competing with the best sides in the Premier League this campaign, so it seems likely that Golden Boot front-runner Vardy will enjoy his trip to Lancashire.

Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.8m) monster haul at Aston Villa has fired him into outside consideration for the Gameweek 23 captaincy, with 12.3% of the voters lending him their backing for the visit of Crystal Palace.

It must be said that the centre-forward has only started two of the last four Gameweeks and there is another fixture coming up for Pep Guardiola’s men on Tuesday evening…

After assisting in Liverpool’s win at Spurs, Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is considered the most likely to break through Manchester United’s defence on Sunday afternoon.

The Egyptian has two double-figure hauls in his last three outings at Anfield, yielding a 6.3% backing in the captain poll.

By contrast, Mané has the support of just 3.1% of the voters despite proving more reliable at home recently.

The Senegalese international has registered attacking returns in each of his last four at Anfield, while Salah has two blanks in that time.

Raheem Sterling‘s (£11.8m) no-show against Aston Villa appears to have boosted his chances of a start against Crystal Palace, and his captain credentials in the process.

3.6% of the voters have decreed him as the best option for Gameweek 23, although his last league goal at the Etihad Stadium came against Aston Villa in Gameweek 10.

Danny Ings‘ (£6.8m) continuing form keeps on pushing him higher in the captaincy consideration. 3.2% have backed him for Southampton’s Gameweek 23 meeting with Wolves, who appear increasing threadbare and in need of January signings.

Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m), Son Heung-min (£9.8m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), Marcus Rashford (£9.2m), Neal Maupay (£5.9m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) are the only other options with more than 1% in the captain poll.

Will appreciate your help on the best move from here?

    1) gw24: Rico Grealish Jimenez-> VVD Martial Greenwood for -4

    3) gw23: Jimenez-> Maupay, gw24: Rico-> VVD. All for free

Martial won’t get a sniff and might be injured again soon. Maddison has hit some bad form and Alli is in terrible form! Then Greenwood is unreliable and I think Grealish is still a solid pick so overall I think 1 is awful in my honest opinion

It’s a tough one. B is very tempting but I usually don’t like transfers for 1 week only. C makes the most sense as it gives me a flexibility as it’s gives me 2FTs heading into the dgw incase there are injuries. Really don’t want to take a hit in gw24

I think as long as you have a route to a third Liverpool player for next game week needs to be in your thinking. You need to think about Jimenez not currently in form and fixtures not good. Your defence is kind of week. Soy fine for maybe next 2 weeks but then Leicester have poor fixtures. Feel you need a decent third defender. I think your midfield is fine

Thank you... My Initial plan is to get Mane in next week but have been playing around with Firmino as well but worried thats a trap just based on the away fixtures. Agreed re Jiminez and defence... Soy is the obvious one to make way i think. Although I'm still not completely sold with Martial and united!

So anyone else here that hates those moments in season when you have like 13 players that you cant change ( or would be stupid to sell ) and all you can do is play this game with only those 2 players in mind. And you cant sell them either cause all replacements are really bad picks?
So you just watch GWs pass by with around average scores, going minimally up and down in rankings finishing at the same rank at the end of that period

When that happens - it’s all about the Captain

I only this happens usually for 2 to 3 week spells, then everything changes and need to make transfers. Enjoy the calm, there is a storm coming 🙂

the thing with City, you just have to prepare and accept for that to happen. With Pep you never know what he is going to do.

Could easily play those 3 listed, I think there is a good chance 1 of Kun/Mahrez are benched.

Wouldn’t be surprised if its Bernardo, Jesus and Sterling tomorrow, and Mahrez, Aguero and Sterling on Tuesday… which is what he did in the reverse fixtures, but who knows.

They don't need to be "rested", they haven't played in a week. But there will be rotation and Mahrez is unlikely to start as Sterling and B. Silva should get to play this time.

    Good morning.

    Which plan is best?

    A. Martial to Sterling this week and Sterling Mane next week.
    B. Martial to Mahrez this week and Mahrez to Mane next week
    C. Martial to Mane this week.
    D. Keep Martial this week and ship to Mane next week.

Could possibly (c) the City assets in options A and B.

    Thanks.

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

        Hopefully Vardy

Still managing to generate 5 points from zero shots last week was hugely impressive in its own way

But we need a Vardy (c) double or treble return to kybosh these nasty "Is the Vardy Party over" headlines 😉

This 0 shots thing is really annoying and misleading. He actually scored a goal, but it was offside so doesn't count towards the stats. Doesn't mean there weren't chances.

            • 14 Years

Totally agree, hence my somewhat tongue in cheek reference to the headline 🙂

It was painted as such a negative & held up against Ings 9 shots - where possibly a bit of balance was needed to say "hang on - this is Vardy still churning out points in his quieter moments"

I know there are always arguments for & against use of underlying stats, but to me scoring 5 FPL points from 9 shots is *almost* a criticism - and vice versa with Vardy 🙂

I see zero cause for panic with him (at the minute!)

Thing with underlying stats is they sometimes help to spot a player who looks good but hasn't been picking up the returns, whereas with Ings it's the other way around, he's had the returns even when Southampton were dire but not the sheer volume of chances/shots. Similar to Vardy in a sense, when he went from 'stat-busting' to being top of the stats. I do feel he's on a downhill trajectory but only because his scoring form around GW10-17 ish was insane, I think he's going to regress to the mean and still be churning out returns worth his price

Looks like Rashford will miss out, means relying on Dendo coming off the bench, doubt he will give me the bench points when I actually need them.

      Do I

      A) hold FT, and bring in VVD as planned next week for Soy
      B) Rashford to DCL, and bring in Robertson (Or VVD) for Rico next week.
      C) Rashford to anyone else up to 9.9

      Have Ings and Vardy

Haha - I've just replied on you question about bobby with my concerns, I had thought about doing that, but for me, as Mane is out of reach, I prefer the double pool defence over TAA and Bobby.

If you are on a WC, i cant see why you wouldnt have Williams in it, even as 5th def fodder. He will continue to get games, has been playing much better than Shaw has played in the past 3 years.

Fair enough with Balbuana, you could bring in J Stephens for the same price.

nope, if you are getting friminho in, do it now.

I would say that out of all the pool options, Bobby would be last choice for me from Robbo/TAA/Salah/Mane and even VVD.

For the money, I'd sooner bring in an extra defender, if you already have one Def/Mf. 3 mill saving between him and VVD, and I would bet that up to 31, big Virg will outscore bobby.

there is still a while to go yet in the season, and i think the double pool defence will be a differential.

If it was maybe gw 30 and your are struggling to make any gains, then go for a punt.

Bobby could be good, but you wont be captaining him ahead of Salah, no pretty sure im sticking with the double defence!

If I was chasing a ML by a fair number of points and wasn't concerned by OR, I can't see why anyone wouldn't be taking a chance on something like this or the triple defence. There's not going to be many other chances to make up a lot of points in a short period of time on something that isn't a completely wild punt.
