How the sunk cost fallacy can influence Fantasy managers’ decisions

In his latest Pro Pundits column, former Fantasy Premier League champion Simon March looks at how future decisions can be influenced by past ‘investments’.

We’re at that stage of the season where the decisions we FPL managers are facing are becoming ever more difficult, so I think it’s a good time to consider a cognitive bias that may well be affecting how we make those decisions; ‘sunk cost fallacy’.

A ‘sunk cost’ is essentially any cost that has already been incurred and cannot be retrieved. For example, the £200 I gave those men in a van outside the student union for some dodgy speakers back when I was 18, that money has gone, I can’t get it back. I really should stop thinking about it…

The ‘sunk cost fallacy’ describes the way in which our future decisions are influenced by such past ‘investments’. Now, if we were being entirely rational and logical about things, all future expenditures would be based on maximising future gains but, because of the sunk cost fallacy, we often continue with an endeavour or ‘throw good money after bad’ in order to psychologically justify past decisions.

In FPL, sunk cost fallacy manifests itself in a few different ways, perhaps the most literal of which being when we have a lot of money tied up in a player due to them having increased in price during our ownership. We’re often less inclined to sell such players, even when we probably should, because we are overly influenced by what we’ve already invested.

 1

For example, I, like many, bought Leicester’s Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) when he was much cheaper so I have a lot of money tied up in him right now.

Of course, it’s easy to say in hindsight following his one-pointer and potentially significant injury that I should have transferred him out but, even before this Gameweek, there were objective arguments for doing so.

Vardy’s fixtures weren’t brilliant, his form was seemingly even worse and he looked to be dropping in price. Meanwhile, I could have flipped that investment to purchase Liverpool assets who have great fixtures, largely great form, a Double Gameweek and many of whom will increase in price.

On a purely logical, cost/benefit decision basis, such a move made a lot of sense, and I knew this, but I still didn’t do it, in part, because I didn’t want to lose the money I’d gained from Vardy’s previous price increases. Two other cognitive biases; loss aversion and status quo bias may also have been at play here, but those are for a different article.

Another, more abstract, manifestation of sunk cost fallacy comes from our desire to justify past decisions, often to our detriment. For example, in Gameweek 22, I was faced with using or losing one of my two free transfers so, with extreme reluctance, I sold Watford’s Ben Foster (£4.9m) and bought in West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski (£4.9m).

Of course, Fabianski was infamously injured after 14 minutes, thus scoring one point, while Foster, naturally, scored six. Since Fabianski was my only playing goalkeeper, I was then forced to use yet another transfer to make up for the transfer that, you recall, I didn’t want to make in the first place. Foster was still the goalkeeper that I really wanted but did I buy him back? Oh no. I had to mentally ‘justify’ my previous (wrong) transfer and so I made another (wrong) transfer and bought in Southampton’s Alex McCarthy (£4.4m), who scored one point compared to Foster’s nine (…nine!).

Anyway, thank you for coming to my therapy session… wait, sorry, I was writing an article wasn’t I. The moral of this story is that, were I not influenced by sunk cost fallacy, I might have reversed my goalkeeper decision but, instead, I lost out even more because, instead of focusing my decisions on maximising my future potential gains, I made decisions with the intention of trying to justify my past decisions.

Sure, maybe I’m being a little hard on myself and these decisions may still pay off (McCarthy kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 24) but, you know, I’m trying to make a point here… and that point is; while it’s hard to accept when you’ve been wrong, it’s even harder to later accept being wrong multiple times in an effort to mentally ‘correct’ past wrong decisions which, by virtue of being in the past, physically cannot be corrected.

Sunk cost fallacy is a pretty deep-rooted bias and, as you’ve seen, I still commit it despite being well aware that I’m doing it but, ultimately, FPL only has 38 Gameweeks and every Gameweek counts so we don’t have the luxury of living in the past. Literally, the only thing that matters in this game are the points you score going forward so we’d do well to ensure that we make our decisions on that basis, no matter how loudly our past decisions might continue to echo in our ears.

Simon March is a member of our Pro Pundits initiative, a team of Fantasy managers here to bring you regular advice and updates on their teams. Simon won the FPL title in 2014/15 and has become a fixture on the punditry circuit ever since.

Antonio is good but he isn't Adama, in fact nobody is. I think he is probably the scariest attacker to defend against.

Maybe. But it's a game of chance, if i want to make up ground on my mini leagues, i need to take gambles, and losing Vardy is a gamble i'm willing to take, i understand the risks involved, Vardy > Auba might work out well

Maybe those who don't care about losing a million quid on a player are the ones who tend to do best out of a situation. Latetriser ditching him for Aguero and captaining him against Villa, those points from that one game are worth 1m.

Hit the WC mate. Do something about it now, don't wait until it's too late. If you're struggling, then following the meta plan, with the blanks and DGW's wont work because everyone will be doing that, get ahead of the curve, stay positive, make a change now.

If your team is in dire need of a change, then a wildcard is the perfect solution, i'm confused at why people are so sceptical and hesitant when it comes to using it early? So many people on here laugh off the thought of an early WC saying it should be saved for the DGW /BGW

    1. TheDragon
      • 5 Years

It’s probably more the fact that the wildcard is their ‘safety net’/ ‘last chance’ to make a change to improve their fortunes. If they play it now and it doesn’t work .... what then?

Double LFC defence TAA and one of Robbo/Gomez/VVD
        KDB, Salah or Mane
Wolves fixtures are nice, so Traore, Cantwell as fodder
a nice differential in Mahrez, or Son if you can afford him
Then Auba and Aguero, but if you cant afford both, Ings and Jiminez

I wouldn't mind reverting to 1 WC a season and binning all chips. I'd also get rid of the VC option - that would be a great way for the better managers to exceed but it doesn't keep the general public engaged so it won't happen.

Yeah worked a treat disnt it last season, coughBrightonDoubledefcough...coughDunkCapcough....sorry got a bit of allergy.
Players need a pair of balls rather than being p#$$ies , blanks and dgws are very attractive but as the mane, vardy and lack of pool cs last night proves it is a high risk tonwc just for a blank or dgw.
Ideal situation of course would be free hit blanks, wc to setup bb for a dgw but with the extreme unpredictability of the league this season id say it is very VERY open to interpretation regarding the WC chip and when to use it.

Side note :2 fts can sometimes be just as good as a WC when in trouble

      1. DAZZ
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

I agree with what your saying. Just because the plan looks good on paper, doesn't mean it will work. How many transfers would you require before you'd consider using the WC then? Say you needed 4 players out?

        1. OleGGMU
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 2 months ago

Id say 5 and above for me, reason, 2fts plus a -4 can solve things, a -8 is high risk and would require, for me , a cap on one of those transfered in players and can work should said player perform, ofcourse it can be a major tragedy to lose those 8 points and see no one cover em up.

So yeah 5 and above for me.

In my current team i have all playing barring my fodder keeper so im comfortable with knowing i can rotate and cover without a major overhaul.
Id say if you are thinking of shipping Mane to salah for example, not sure on your squad, then wait it out fof more news, ir its a player/s that are severelt injured or have blanked in 3 or more gws then ship.

One final thing to keep in mind is constantly shaking up the def this season has been senseless due to the lack of consistency in cs's , pool had their mini run end and its hit and miss elsewhere. Options in mid and upfront are opening up and for the forward line look at players that score /assist against tough opponents these are the ones to keep, like jimi for example.

Agreed, but just feels a bit HAZARD-esq atm, the faith was kept and kept and kept and kept and it only delivered late on when the inpact was minimal given the damage done in the run up to it.
Leicester have 3 tricky gws before the relagtion fodder as you put it but important to keep in mind the old saying "its not about the size of the dog on the fight but the size of the fight in the dog"
You can insult them calijng them fodder but they have bite and will fight to stay up. Avl havent invested to have their team lay down, brighton play good footie and can hurt teams, watford are not gonna roll over and play dead after their recent resurgence .

It is insulting to refer to Everton as relegation fodder, nit that im a fan of theirs, but they are defonjot a shite team and uncle carlo will not let them get torn apart. cpl is cpl , either defensively solid and alwsys maintain a good shape during the game, of course they having been hauling the cs's this season but i dont see them being pummeled into oblivion by any team to the extent that other players cant cover the vardy goal or brace. Hatties by anyone cannot be covered unless you get another hattie or two players getting a brace a each imo

Fear mongering this season is pointless mate given the inconsistency of the league across the board

6 blanks for jamie is justification enough to ship, yeah i know he had an assist in those 6gws but 1 assist in 6 is not good at all.
Aguero cant be a bad move based on form, but remember the pep roulette can bite you so id be weary of using your cap on him unless you can adequately cover that much hated 1 point late 2nd half appearance.

I did Vardy to Aubameyang, as want to mix it up a bit, Aubameyang only 13% owned so worth it with his upcoming fixtures

I have no problem selling "tied up value" players whatsoever, but at least before I pull the trigger I need to make sure it feels right, especially if we're doing it because of potential injuries not yet fully confirmed. That's not sunk cost fallacy, it's being dumb.

    Vardy Maupay Ings

    (B) 0.0itb

I'm pretty fed up with this season, time to wildcard?

    Ryan Woodman*
    Trent Soy Lund Kelly Mings
    Salah Mane* KDB Maddison Cantwell
    Vardy Ings Greenwood

Main changes I'd look at would be:

Ryan, Soyuncu, Mings, Mane, Vardy, Greenwood out

Henderson, Robertson, Stephens, Grealish, Jimenez, DCL in

Naa, Vardy and Mane enough for now, save WC until week before DGW and bench boost

Gut tells me Maddison will punish his sellers against Chelsea. Same thing happened with Pereira and Jimenez. Leicester could slap Chelsea with Ndidi back. Mane to Maddison (-4)?

We all know Salah was a bit greedy and wasteful, but need to give him a bit of credit for the winning goal, great feet there to get the ball to Hendo...

That wasn't a pass, he lost control of it and it fell into Henderson's path. Salah has morphed into one of the greediest players in Europe.

Mane used to be very greedy, he's reached the right level of greediness now which is fine for a wide attacker. Salah is in a league of his own these days and it would've been more frustrating than it is had Liverpool not been so far ahead.

I agree BF. I get the feeling he still wants to be the main man, like his breakout first season. It was all about him. It isn’t anymore, Mane, TAA, VVD, we havn’t relied on him as much this season! So i feel his greedyness is him trying too hard. The top off against Man Utd, yes great goal, great moment, but as soon as he removed his top i knew for a fact it would instantly be on Instagram, he wants it to be the Salah show

We don't do main man business so it's really annoying me if I'm honest. I agree about the top off for Instagram, and you could see him gearing to do similar when he scuffed a chance in the second half - he was getting ready to celebrate before he scored and ended up getting the ball caught between his feet. He is still a top player not doubt but he has this Ronaldo aura about him - I find it silly/pathetic.

I have always liked his selfish streak in front of goal but there were a few times last night when he should have played to others... he did have good feet to keep the ball but was more a ricochet to hendo I think

As an owner that greed is a good thing, but as a nervous triple captainer I would've snapped your hands off for an assist or 2 last night.

There will always be the odd slap of the whip to punish sellers, but the trend has been downwards for both him and Vardy for a while, let aside Leicester.

    next week replacement of Mané

All terrible options except for Mahrez but rotation galore. Spurs played terrible at home against the worst away team in the league. Maybe someone maverick like Fleck or JWP?

Nice punt, but awkward to negotiate the upcoming blank GW if you have 2-3 Leicester.

Perez is easily benchable. And most people would have taken out Lei defenders before this week. (Including me who stupidly took out Pereira for Robbo)

I don't think most people have necessarily taken out Leicester defenders before this GW

Likewise mate, he is also an awkward price point if you also have Salah.

I think I will keep and have him miss a game tbh.

No point in having good TV if you don't sell players in these situations. Hammy means he'll be slowly introduced if it's a serious one.

He seems so average when you look at him. Not super quick, not super strong, not the most clinical finisher. But he is a good all rounder and gets into the right areas to score.

Just pulled the WC trigger last night. Disastrous season so far. How's this looking?

    Pope (Button)
    TAA VVD Lund (Lascelles Rico)
    Salah KDB Mahrez Grealish Traore
    Aguero Jimenez (DCL)

Mostly good but Mahrez too much of a risk for me. City unreliable and if he doesn't start, he always comes on for the one-point cameo.

Plus your giving yourself major benching headaches with 8 decent attacking options.
