How the sunk cost fallacy can influence Fantasy managers’ decisions

In his latest Pro Pundits column, former Fantasy Premier League champion Simon March looks at how future decisions can be influenced by past ‘investments’.

We’re at that stage of the season where the decisions we FPL managers are facing are becoming ever more difficult, so I think it’s a good time to consider a cognitive bias that may well be affecting how we make those decisions; ‘sunk cost fallacy’.

A ‘sunk cost’ is essentially any cost that has already been incurred and cannot be retrieved. For example, the £200 I gave those men in a van outside the student union for some dodgy speakers back when I was 18, that money has gone, I can’t get it back. I really should stop thinking about it…

The ‘sunk cost fallacy’ describes the way in which our future decisions are influenced by such past ‘investments’. Now, if we were being entirely rational and logical about things, all future expenditures would be based on maximising future gains but, because of the sunk cost fallacy, we often continue with an endeavour or ‘throw good money after bad’ in order to psychologically justify past decisions.

In FPL, sunk cost fallacy manifests itself in a few different ways, perhaps the most literal of which being when we have a lot of money tied up in a player due to them having increased in price during our ownership. We’re often less inclined to sell such players, even when we probably should, because we are overly influenced by what we’ve already invested.

 1

For example, I, like many, bought Leicester’s Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) when he was much cheaper so I have a lot of money tied up in him right now.

Of course, it’s easy to say in hindsight following his one-pointer and potentially significant injury that I should have transferred him out but, even before this Gameweek, there were objective arguments for doing so.

Vardy’s fixtures weren’t brilliant, his form was seemingly even worse and he looked to be dropping in price. Meanwhile, I could have flipped that investment to purchase Liverpool assets who have great fixtures, largely great form, a Double Gameweek and many of whom will increase in price.

On a purely logical, cost/benefit decision basis, such a move made a lot of sense, and I knew this, but I still didn’t do it, in part, because I didn’t want to lose the money I’d gained from Vardy’s previous price increases. Two other cognitive biases; loss aversion and status quo bias may also have been at play here, but those are for a different article.

Another, more abstract, manifestation of sunk cost fallacy comes from our desire to justify past decisions, often to our detriment. For example, in Gameweek 22, I was faced with using or losing one of my two free transfers so, with extreme reluctance, I sold Watford’s Ben Foster (£4.9m) and bought in West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski (£4.9m).

Of course, Fabianski was infamously injured after 14 minutes, thus scoring one point, while Foster, naturally, scored six. Since Fabianski was my only playing goalkeeper, I was then forced to use yet another transfer to make up for the transfer that, you recall, I didn’t want to make in the first place. Foster was still the goalkeeper that I really wanted but did I buy him back? Oh no. I had to mentally ‘justify’ my previous (wrong) transfer and so I made another (wrong) transfer and bought in Southampton’s Alex McCarthy (£4.4m), who scored one point compared to Foster’s nine (…nine!).

Anyway, thank you for coming to my therapy session… wait, sorry, I was writing an article wasn’t I. The moral of this story is that, were I not influenced by sunk cost fallacy, I might have reversed my goalkeeper decision but, instead, I lost out even more because, instead of focusing my decisions on maximising my future potential gains, I made decisions with the intention of trying to justify my past decisions.

Sure, maybe I’m being a little hard on myself and these decisions may still pay off (McCarthy kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 24) but, you know, I’m trying to make a point here… and that point is; while it’s hard to accept when you’ve been wrong, it’s even harder to later accept being wrong multiple times in an effort to mentally ‘correct’ past wrong decisions which, by virtue of being in the past, physically cannot be corrected.

Sunk cost fallacy is a pretty deep-rooted bias and, as you’ve seen, I still commit it despite being well aware that I’m doing it but, ultimately, FPL only has 38 Gameweeks and every Gameweek counts so we don’t have the luxury of living in the past. Literally, the only thing that matters in this game are the points you score going forward so we’d do well to ensure that we make our decisions on that basis, no matter how loudly our past decisions might continue to echo in our ears.

Simon March is a member of our Pro Pundits initiative, a team of Fantasy managers here to bring you regular advice and updates on their teams. Simon won the FPL title in 2014/15 and has become a fixture on the punditry circuit ever since.

Check out Ben Crellin on Twitter, he has the percentage likelihood of teams not playing.

At the moment for GW31 it looks like Chelsea v Man City is a high probability blank, Man Utd v Sheff Utd, Spurs v West Ham.

Nothing definite yet but keep an eye on his calculations.

What to do with this squad? Thinking areas of concern are defence and injuries to Mané and Vardy if confirmed long term

    A WC
B Mané to Mahrez and Kelly to VVD ( if Mané out) -4.
C B plus Vardy to Aubameyang ( if Vardy out) -8

Haller to Ings or Jimenéz can wait until week 26

    Ryan Button
    TAA Söyüncü Lundstram Rico Kelly
Salah Mané * KDB Grealish Cantwell
    Vardy * DCL Haller

It depends on the length of the injuries, if both out for a considerable amount of time, will need to shift them both.

I actually benefited from the Rich and Rash injuries. I wasn't planning on selling either of them but I forced into it. So I got Grealish and DCL and both paid off. But what really paid off was that I was unable to get rid of Jim. I had to play him this week as well.

It's funny how this game goes. If all had gone to plan I probably would have done worse.

I see why you would be worried about Aguero and yes, you do have a lot of benching headaches. Points to make for either case are:

          A. Even if Aguero misses the occasional game, he does score a lot as well, so that would offset the occasional missed game. From that point of view - Aguero is definitely an option.

          B. Alternatively, instead of upgrading Kun, maybe see about upgrading Perez? Feel like if Vardy is back fit, Perez may not haul as much as he did the last few games when Vardy was out.

Thanks. I don't think I will WC if Vardy not out. There are not too many options in that mid price midfield bracket, maybe Mahrez, but again he will be hit with lots of rotation. I have Madison at present who looks the part every game, but his fpl returns have been none existent recently.

Same here mate. Have both Vardy and Mane and would only hit the WC button if both are confirmed out for ages, but I don't think that will be the case. I also have Maddi and it is really frustrating that it is just not happening for him right now.

The price of a team in form - what does your money buy you? AKA don't be afraid to lose value on player:

The form team in the league over the last 6 at *any* price is

    Alisson
    TAA VVD Azpi
    Perez KdB Martial Grealish
    Aguero Jimenez DCL

This team would have scored you a massive average of 77 points (without captaincy and without any subs!) every week for the last six weeks. There is no Salah in there and no Mané.

If you have a 4.0 keeper you have bench spots for 2x £4.5m players and it still comes in at a fraction less than the £100m *original* starting budget. If you had this team at the start of the season I estimate that it would have cost about £99m. Stephens has scored as many points as Grealish in the last 6 so you could have this starting 11 and the same points for £2m less or around £98m

I understand that having money in the bank is a good thing, it is useful to invest in potential captain picks etc., it's good to have a buffer to upgrade in the future. Also, nobody has a crystal ball to see how well their team will do for the next six (i.e. I doubt anyone would have picked this team a month ago), but the fact is that if you had this team 6 GWs ago you would have LOST points for every single pound you spent to "upgrade" it.

Sometimes the form team isn't the most expensive or even an affordable team. Sometimes you need to lose money on a player to be able to invest in assets who are about to hit form or have a good run of fixtures. It goes to underline the idea that the most expensive players really do have to keep returning the big points to justify their outlay and, yes, sometimes you will end up sitting on money in the bank that you don't need to do anything with. At all. So maybe it doesn't matter much if we lose money selling Vardy or Mané.

Maybe we sometimes need to resist the urge to invest and upgrade for its own sake and keep the money in the bank just to deal with eventualities - injuries, hopping on and off the best captains and so on. I hope this is food for thought and I look forward to a bit of debate on this subject hopefully!

A good read thanks. I reckon looking at form is overlooked a lot and we base our premium picks on the 'what if they haul' and I dont have them. That team would be a brave one to have based on the chatter here and most of the moves would not be seen as good.

I think the main argument for spending budget is that the 'better' a player, the more tickets for the lottery you buy. Mané is more likely to score well over 6 than Perez for example. This in inarguable over a gameweek or two. Over six GWs, form starts to show.

Correction: If you have a 4.0 keeper , *STEPHENS* and 2x £4.5m players. I factored in the price of Stephens on the bench so the argument stands (assuming the maths do!)

One thing I might try doing is, instead of investing all my money, making sure I have money ITB to upgrade a mid-price mid or forward to the best possible option. That way, when Villa come to the Etihad and I don't have Aguero to captain, I can get him easily without having to hide behind the sofa or tear my team up to pick him up.

When a decision doesn't go your way you try and find a reason how you could have acted differently but realistically a lot of the decisions not working are just complete luck at the end of the day. We don't know all the facts and we don't control any of the outcomes, so we weight up some options and take a normally rational look and then decide.

At that point it is a flip of a coin whether your player comes back from a small injury and performs like they previously have, or has a set back in their recovery and is now out for another month.

Yeah people find it hard to accept that the number one factor in this game is... plain luck or lack of. Obviously not the only factor but definitely the most defining one.

Why Sterling is not so popular now?

Been very poor but FPL is also about being ahead of the curve and maybe Sterling finishes this season strongly?

On the brightside, DFS have a great sale on sofas at the moment. Should be able to get a massive one in ready for Wednesday to block out all those Firmino and Henderson points raining in.

The main weakness of this WC team is?

    Henderson, Button
    TAA, VVD, Lascelles, Williams, Tanganga
    Salah, KDB, Son, Grealish, Dendoncker
    Auba, Jimenez, Ings

I would say Son. Could work as a somewhat differential, but I do not like Mou's Spurs at all.

Pretty good. Possibly Firmino for auba, lose VVD and possibly dend to fleck and improve Williams/tang

I would go for differential. Do you have a lot of value tied up in Lundy?
