How the sunk cost fallacy can influence Fantasy managers’ decisions

In his latest Pro Pundits column, former Fantasy Premier League champion Simon March looks at how future decisions can be influenced by past ‘investments’.

We’re at that stage of the season where the decisions we FPL managers are facing are becoming ever more difficult, so I think it’s a good time to consider a cognitive bias that may well be affecting how we make those decisions; ‘sunk cost fallacy’.

A ‘sunk cost’ is essentially any cost that has already been incurred and cannot be retrieved. For example, the £200 I gave those men in a van outside the student union for some dodgy speakers back when I was 18, that money has gone, I can’t get it back. I really should stop thinking about it…

The ‘sunk cost fallacy’ describes the way in which our future decisions are influenced by such past ‘investments’. Now, if we were being entirely rational and logical about things, all future expenditures would be based on maximising future gains but, because of the sunk cost fallacy, we often continue with an endeavour or ‘throw good money after bad’ in order to psychologically justify past decisions.

In FPL, sunk cost fallacy manifests itself in a few different ways, perhaps the most literal of which being when we have a lot of money tied up in a player due to them having increased in price during our ownership. We’re often less inclined to sell such players, even when we probably should, because we are overly influenced by what we’ve already invested.

 1

For example, I, like many, bought Leicester’s Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) when he was much cheaper so I have a lot of money tied up in him right now.

Of course, it’s easy to say in hindsight following his one-pointer and potentially significant injury that I should have transferred him out but, even before this Gameweek, there were objective arguments for doing so.

Vardy’s fixtures weren’t brilliant, his form was seemingly even worse and he looked to be dropping in price. Meanwhile, I could have flipped that investment to purchase Liverpool assets who have great fixtures, largely great form, a Double Gameweek and many of whom will increase in price.

On a purely logical, cost/benefit decision basis, such a move made a lot of sense, and I knew this, but I still didn’t do it, in part, because I didn’t want to lose the money I’d gained from Vardy’s previous price increases. Two other cognitive biases; loss aversion and status quo bias may also have been at play here, but those are for a different article.

Another, more abstract, manifestation of sunk cost fallacy comes from our desire to justify past decisions, often to our detriment. For example, in Gameweek 22, I was faced with using or losing one of my two free transfers so, with extreme reluctance, I sold Watford’s Ben Foster (£4.9m) and bought in West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski (£4.9m).

Of course, Fabianski was infamously injured after 14 minutes, thus scoring one point, while Foster, naturally, scored six. Since Fabianski was my only playing goalkeeper, I was then forced to use yet another transfer to make up for the transfer that, you recall, I didn’t want to make in the first place. Foster was still the goalkeeper that I really wanted but did I buy him back? Oh no. I had to mentally ‘justify’ my previous (wrong) transfer and so I made another (wrong) transfer and bought in Southampton’s Alex McCarthy (£4.4m), who scored one point compared to Foster’s nine (…nine!).

Anyway, thank you for coming to my therapy session… wait, sorry, I was writing an article wasn’t I. The moral of this story is that, were I not influenced by sunk cost fallacy, I might have reversed my goalkeeper decision but, instead, I lost out even more because, instead of focusing my decisions on maximising my future potential gains, I made decisions with the intention of trying to justify my past decisions.

Sure, maybe I’m being a little hard on myself and these decisions may still pay off (McCarthy kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 24) but, you know, I’m trying to make a point here… and that point is; while it’s hard to accept when you’ve been wrong, it’s even harder to later accept being wrong multiple times in an effort to mentally ‘correct’ past wrong decisions which, by virtue of being in the past, physically cannot be corrected.

Sunk cost fallacy is a pretty deep-rooted bias and, as you’ve seen, I still commit it despite being well aware that I’m doing it but, ultimately, FPL only has 38 Gameweeks and every Gameweek counts so we don’t have the luxury of living in the past. Literally, the only thing that matters in this game are the points you score going forward so we’d do well to ensure that we make our decisions on that basis, no matter how loudly our past decisions might continue to echo in our ears.

Simon March is a member of our Pro Pundits initiative, a team of Fantasy managers here to bring you regular advice and updates on their teams. Simon won the FPL title in 2014/15 and has become a fixture on the punditry circuit ever since.

Not sure what to do here, probably depends on Vardy/Abraham injuries. 2 FTs to play with.

Thinking maybe downgrade Alli and then Maupay > Ings?

    Ryan - Pope

    Robertson - VVD - Lundstram - Soyuncu - Kelly

    Salah - KDB - Alli - Traore - Cantwell

    Vardy - Abraham - Maupay

    Vardy(!) - Abraham(!) - Ings

What on earth do I do with this front 8?

      Hold Maddison for now.
Wait and see for news on Mane, Vardy and Tammy, but easy move would be Mane to Salah.

It sounds worse than it is. Vardy may be back fit by the next game. Maddi is playing well, just frustrating that he is not getting any attacking returns but his luck is bound to change soon, so not that pressing. Mane is a bummer but his injury may not be as bad either. Abraham I don't know much about recently to be honest. Wait and see what the news are on Vardy and Mane and then decide 🙂

      RP - Bottomed

On WC keep Lundy or go differential with Stevens/Baldock?
Got him since GW1 so obviously will lose value but not too worried about that.

I'd keep Lundy if he has not lost his place. Not much differential in SHU other defense as they all will get CS plus Lundy is more advance and has goal potential.

Obviously would like to keep Lundy but we can't be sure if he's nailed or not.

Also it seems like Fleck is taking up the attacking duties in midfield. Lundy hasn't got an attacking return since a long time.

Manchester City have scored more Premier League goals than any other team so far in 2020, with 11.

At the other end, Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur have managed just two.

Here’s how it looks, with each team having played four games.

              11 – Manchester City
              9 – Leicester City
              7 – Liverpool, Southampton
6 – Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Watford, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers
              5 – Burnley, Everton
4 – Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Newcastle United
3 – Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion, Norwich City
2 – Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur

… and here are the players who’ve returned more than one goal…

              6 – Aguero
3 – Jesus, Jimenez, Noble, Perez, Wood
2 – Armstrong, Azpilicueta, Barnes, Calvert-Lewin, Deeney, Doucoure, Firmino, Grealish, Jorginho, Ings, Lejeune, Mahrez, Martinelli, Neto, Pukki, Rashford, Richarlison, Salah

Leicester City and Southampton sit 2nd and 3rd respectively. Has anyone considered investing in one of their differential options, like Ayoze Perez, Harvey Barnes or Stuart Armstrong?

Despite Aston Villa and Watford struggling at the wrong end of the table, they’re still scoring goals, whilst expected numbers suggest Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion have been unfortunate not to score more.

Is there anyone from these clubs on your Watchlist in the attacking positions, maybe someone who has passed the eye test, or someone whose stats have stood out?

Is there anyone near the bottom of the list, simply because of fixtures, whose fortunes you expect to change?

Fleck as a rotating 4th/5th mid could tick along nicely.

I think Maupay will finally get a couple of goals in the next 2-3 games.

Like you I'm hoping Son can do well over the next few weeks.

With Mane & Vardy injuries surely you got bigger fish to fry now.

I wouldn't mind keeping him but if no other issues then Jimenez, Deeney, Ings all look better options.

Vardy's form has fallen off the cliff though. Not sure if he's worth keeping with tough fixtures and a possible blank in GW28.
An upgrade to Aguero or Auba is very tempting.

But Aguero and Auba are likely to blank in GW28 aswell, in fact given how the ties are poised they are more likely to than Vardy is!

And it hasn't fallen off a cliff, his wife had a baby, then he had 2 injuries and a missed penalty. I don't see how injuries can be classed as "poor form", and missing a penalty can happen to anyone.

That's a good point, I forgot City play Arsenal in 28, so Aubameyang will blank too.

Exactly. And if Leicester don't make the final, they play Norwich, so he will be a great option, and a captaincy option too.

That's why I can't really wildcard yet. As it stands right now I have an injured Sarr, Abraham, Vardy, Mane, a dropped Lundstram and an about to be dropped Kelly, I might have 3 players missing GW28, 4 if i go for certain transfer targets. But in a weeks time I will know who blanks in 28, have a good idea who does or doen't blank in GW31, might have no injured players and can make transfers safe in the knowledge they won't have blanks. I'll probably miss price rises in the meantime but the cost of knowledge is too high imo.

But you will have 3 FTs to change Aguero and/or Auba before GW 28.

WC now allows you to potentially gain points while still giving you room to navigate a potential blank.

You cant justify losing points with long term planning.

I don't own a single player on that list. No wonder I'm doing badly!

Armstrong, Mooy, Redmond and Fleck deserve consideration in the cheap midfielder slots.

Interesting isn't it, I only own Ings and Grealish, but have had a terrible couple of weeks.

Investing in Armstrong, or possibly Redmond, could pay off after Liverpool.

With all the potential injuries to forwards and Mane, a switch to 3-5-2 or a flexible 4-4-2 for a few weeks could work, taking advantage of the Sheffield United and Southampton fixture swings for cheaper assets. Greenwood and Martinelli could be in play as third strikers to come off your bench in these formations too.

I've thought about a 3-5-2 in recent weeks... Grealish, Sarr etc will prob outscore the Maupay or Calvert-Lewin's, so it's something worth considering for sure.

Well I got Sarr for exactly that reason, but then he got injured for me, typically.

I also love how when Ings took 9 shots in a match against Leicester people were falling over themselves to get him in, but when Maupay does it against Bournemouth people can't wait to get rid. Funny how folk frame form and statistics by working from the outcome backwards!

Same, got Sarr in GW20, looked so dangerous before the injury.

Do you own Maupay, and if so, are you holding?

It was immensely frustrating he missed a high opportunity fixture against Villas defence.

Yes I do own Maupay, I'm holding for now yeah. He's up against the only defence that looks as bad as Bournemouth's next!

Good research, but always a bit of caution over comparing stats over an arbitrary period of time. You extend or shorten the time period slightly and the stats (and therefore conclusion) can be a lot different.

For sure Jarvish, go back one more game and Watford sit third etc.

It was more to highlight those in form in recent weeks, and considering how badly I’ve done, I wasn’t surprised how few of them I own.

Even when Man City aren’t firing on all cylinders- they still sit top for most goals scored.

Surprised to see Leicester up on the list as well. I’m interested in Perez and Barnes but don’t think I’d want them for the next 3-4 short term fixtures. Otherwise I think both would be excellent value options to jump on

Depends on WC usage in your league. If no-one's used it then there's every chance a lot of people will end up with simillar WC teams for DGWs and you'll not have much chance of closing the gaps.
If you're chasing then you should consider an early WC. Try and claw back the points before the DGWs. Wait and see how the cup draws look after this weekend and see how things look going forward.

Who's the player you regret not owning enough/at all this season?

              For me, RAUL JIMENEZ.

Why have I not owned him once this season?!

              - He's returned in 14 out of 24 GWs!
              - Nailed on, despite the Europa League
              - Albeit not explosive, his returns are so consistent
              - Plays for a good, exciting attacking side
              - A lot of my rivals have owned (and still own him)

After last season, he's surely near FPL royalty status.

I can't fathom why I haven't owned him once this season.

Interested to get your thoughts on any others.

that's 8 more people yo'uve added in 3 mins, at this rate I'm right to be concerned!

In all seriousness health outbreaks all start slowly don't they, its not like a million people are killed in the first 10 hours of an outbreak is it? I think we are right to be worried, this one seems particularly contagious and damaging, and may well be in the country already according to those reports in Scotland.

Shutting down events where 50,000 people are in close proximity to each other for 90 minutes would seem like me to be one of the sensible precautions to take if we are unlucky enough for it to outbreak here.

Yeah but the reports in Scotland say 14 people are being tested for it, 5 have already come back negative for it.

I get what you’re saying but remember the Ebola outbreak a few years ago? Just blown way out of proportion. I think this is a bit similar.

Hopefully the Scottish people all turn out to have just got colds lol.

Yeah that's true, and SARS a few years before that. Medical science has come a long way since the past in their ability to contain these things. The pace at which this one is infecting people concerns me though, that's all. And naturally FPL effects comes into that thinking 😛

More people die from the common flu each year than from these scam 'pandemic' scares the pharma lobby trots out every few years.

Depending on the Vardy and Abraham news do you think this is worth wildcarding?
Getting frustrated with my current team as never seem to be in the points!

              Currently:
              Ryan Button
              TAA Robbo Sidibe Cathcart Lunds
              Salah KDB Martial Grealish Hayden
              Tammy Vardy Ings

              WC:
              Henderson Button
              TAA VVD Stephens Digne Baldock
              Salah KDB Traore Grealish Hayden
              Jiminez Auba Ings

you are right we have similar issues.
I like Sidibe a lot and actually I could upgrade dunk to Sidebe with exact money on my WC... i may do that you know! He plays out of position too and consistant.

I like your WC team obviously as its similar to mine, looks like you have better team value which is good. There is probably an argument for a hit rather than a WC but its personal choice. I need to make a move on my PL teams and every time I play my chips it goes totally teets up so I am throwing the WC at it and dealing with it mate. I was just looking at Grealish fixtures and wondering if there is a better option out there? maybe perez?

Yeah I like Sidibe tbh. He did get benched against West ham but not sure how much to read into that. I guess the Everton concern is the fixtures after the next couple as we said with DCL, but his out of position is definitely a plus.

Yeah I get that. Ideally holding off the WC is ideal until we know the blank and double GWs, but then I prefer doing transfers in the present and actually being happy with your team, rather than holding off haha!
Think a hit(s) could work as you say, reckon Tammy is the main one to sort out?
Good luck either way, Hope it all works out!

Best replacement for Madisson? Have Grielish

              A: Martial
              B: Fleck (Bank cash
              C: Mahrez
              D: Vardy/Maddison --> Fleck + Aubamayang

              Interesting article today, good read.

Has Perez form & Vardy injury come at a bad time given their fixtures or is he still worth a punt?

              Looking at this 442:

              Ryan
              TAA Gomez Tang Lascelles (Lund)
              Salah KDB Grealish Perez (Fleck)
              Aguero Auba (Greenwood)

Got exact money for this so consider that if giving any pointers. Could downgrade Gomez to upgrade Tang or Lascelles to someone a bit safer. Is Perez/Grealish/Fleck justified by the front two?

              - a bad run of manager choices and luck
              - mane TC used
              - my provate league im chasing and need a mix up

This has prompted me to do the best WC i can with my under average squad value of 103.2. so this is my version of a poor mans template

              McCathy
              Trent VVD Lund
              Salah KDB Grelish Perez
              Auba Ings DCL

              button / stephens / dunk / traore

0.7 itb after ive hit button... would you offer me any kind words or advice?

Looks like you're in a similar position to me (my post above).
I like the team, though looks like you could have a benching headache, given you've got Traore as 3rd sub?
Personally I'm thinking Jiminez could be worth putting in, so could downgrade someone to upgrade DCL?

i did have Jimi however when i saw 2 wolves players in my squad I kind of thought overkill?
Perhaps I should do that exact move though, after DCL next 2 games... thatcould work?

Yeah I think you're right about the overkill, at least for the next couple of games. Could do those moves you suggest, and if Traore still plays well could always try and downgrade someone else if the double up seems like a sensible move at the time!

Appreciate if you could take a look at my post to see if you reckon it's worth wildcarding?
