How the sunk cost fallacy can influence Fantasy managers’ decisions

In his latest Pro Pundits column, former Fantasy Premier League champion Simon March looks at how future decisions can be influenced by past ‘investments’.

We’re at that stage of the season where the decisions we FPL managers are facing are becoming ever more difficult, so I think it’s a good time to consider a cognitive bias that may well be affecting how we make those decisions; ‘sunk cost fallacy’.

A ‘sunk cost’ is essentially any cost that has already been incurred and cannot be retrieved. For example, the £200 I gave those men in a van outside the student union for some dodgy speakers back when I was 18, that money has gone, I can’t get it back. I really should stop thinking about it…

The ‘sunk cost fallacy’ describes the way in which our future decisions are influenced by such past ‘investments’. Now, if we were being entirely rational and logical about things, all future expenditures would be based on maximising future gains but, because of the sunk cost fallacy, we often continue with an endeavour or ‘throw good money after bad’ in order to psychologically justify past decisions.

In FPL, sunk cost fallacy manifests itself in a few different ways, perhaps the most literal of which being when we have a lot of money tied up in a player due to them having increased in price during our ownership. We’re often less inclined to sell such players, even when we probably should, because we are overly influenced by what we’ve already invested.

 1

For example, I, like many, bought Leicester’s Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) when he was much cheaper so I have a lot of money tied up in him right now.

Of course, it’s easy to say in hindsight following his one-pointer and potentially significant injury that I should have transferred him out but, even before this Gameweek, there were objective arguments for doing so.

Vardy’s fixtures weren’t brilliant, his form was seemingly even worse and he looked to be dropping in price. Meanwhile, I could have flipped that investment to purchase Liverpool assets who have great fixtures, largely great form, a Double Gameweek and many of whom will increase in price.

On a purely logical, cost/benefit decision basis, such a move made a lot of sense, and I knew this, but I still didn’t do it, in part, because I didn’t want to lose the money I’d gained from Vardy’s previous price increases. Two other cognitive biases; loss aversion and status quo bias may also have been at play here, but those are for a different article.

Another, more abstract, manifestation of sunk cost fallacy comes from our desire to justify past decisions, often to our detriment. For example, in Gameweek 22, I was faced with using or losing one of my two free transfers so, with extreme reluctance, I sold Watford’s Ben Foster (£4.9m) and bought in West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski (£4.9m).

Of course, Fabianski was infamously injured after 14 minutes, thus scoring one point, while Foster, naturally, scored six. Since Fabianski was my only playing goalkeeper, I was then forced to use yet another transfer to make up for the transfer that, you recall, I didn’t want to make in the first place. Foster was still the goalkeeper that I really wanted but did I buy him back? Oh no. I had to mentally ‘justify’ my previous (wrong) transfer and so I made another (wrong) transfer and bought in Southampton’s Alex McCarthy (£4.4m), who scored one point compared to Foster’s nine (…nine!).

Anyway, thank you for coming to my therapy session… wait, sorry, I was writing an article wasn’t I. The moral of this story is that, were I not influenced by sunk cost fallacy, I might have reversed my goalkeeper decision but, instead, I lost out even more because, instead of focusing my decisions on maximising my future potential gains, I made decisions with the intention of trying to justify my past decisions.

Sure, maybe I’m being a little hard on myself and these decisions may still pay off (McCarthy kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 24) but, you know, I’m trying to make a point here… and that point is; while it’s hard to accept when you’ve been wrong, it’s even harder to later accept being wrong multiple times in an effort to mentally ‘correct’ past wrong decisions which, by virtue of being in the past, physically cannot be corrected.

Sunk cost fallacy is a pretty deep-rooted bias and, as you’ve seen, I still commit it despite being well aware that I’m doing it but, ultimately, FPL only has 38 Gameweeks and every Gameweek counts so we don’t have the luxury of living in the past. Literally, the only thing that matters in this game are the points you score going forward so we’d do well to ensure that we make our decisions on that basis, no matter how loudly our past decisions might continue to echo in our ears.

Simon March is a member of our Pro Pundits initiative, a team of Fantasy managers here to bring you regular advice and updates on their teams. Simon won the FPL title in 2014/15 and has become a fixture on the punditry circuit ever since.

    WC?

    Schmeichel* (Button)
    TAA Lundy* Rico* Kelly* Williams*
    Salah Mane* KDB Martial* Dendo
    Vardy* Deeney DCL

Schmeichel - Tough fixtures & a potential blank in GW28

My whole defence is rotation risk except for TAA.

    Vardy & Mane injured

I can't see Martial scoring much without Rashford and possibly no new signings for United

Set your WC team first and compare. I myself struggle to find the significant better team if WC-ing.

I think it is only your defence that is the trouble. TAA and Lundy are okay, but the rest need to go. Can sort this out with a couple of transfers.

If Vardy and Mane are fit/not out for long, then no need to WC.

He wasn't stretched off. He might be back for GW25 if not then GW26 is not until Feb 8th so plenty of time to regain fitness. He is 3rd highest points scorer. So much more to traverse in the future with blanks in GW28, GW31 and then double game weeks.

A lot of people seem to be put off Man City players because of the difficult fixtures coming up. Would you not say that the FDR is a bit misleading though? The only difficult fixtures for City would be the Man Utd one and the Liverpool one surely.

Not really sunk cost though. My selling price for Vardy is 9.5 and if I believe that I will want to buy him back again at some point, possibly at a cost of 9.9, that means that I would have 0.4 less funds for the rest of my team, compared to if I just keep Vardy. Whether it might still be worth it, is a different matter.

i sold him and lost 0.5m value ... one of the reasons why I did is i think going forward he's unlikely to return as many goals as he did in the first half (regression to mean) ... Vardy scored 17 goals + 6 assists for 23 goal involvements ... past 4 seasons, he maxed out at 32 goal involvements (24 goals + 8 assists) in the title winning season 4 years ago,and averaged 22 GIs over past 3 seasons

Over first 19 he scored 17 + 5 assists for 22 GIs ... over next 19 I doubt he'll generate 7 goals + 3 assists to match his title winning season. Even if he did, still wouldn't be that great value.

For what its worth, I'm projecting max 6 goals + 5 assists (yes I think he will be enabler more) min 4 goals + 3 assists over next 14 games .. not bad 7 to 11 GIs out of 14 games but not sure justifies premium price. I expect his value to drop to around 9.7m as his total ownership drops into the low to mid 30%.

Hence my comment that it might still be a good decision to sell him.

However, it is not the sunk cost that might sway you to keep him, it is the future cost of getting him back in that might.

How many points is a wildcard worth?

Already on a minus 4, if Mane is out that would go to minus 8.

If I played wildcard now I would probably change an extra 4 players, but those moves are not urgent.

Wanted to keep wildcard for later on near dgwks but sitting at 66k i feel this could be a chance to get an advantage.

    Thoughts?

Sounds good? Trying to hold my WC if Mane & Vardy are fit before next GW!

    Schmeichel
    TAA Williams Lundy Rico Kelly
    Salah Mane KDB Martial Dendo
    Vardy Deeney DCL

    GW25 - Martial & Schmeichel to Fleck & Henderson (-4)

GW26 - Kelly to Stephens for free

    GW27 - DCL & Deeney to Ings & Jimmy for -4

    Gives me this

    Hendo (Button)
    TAA Lundy Stephens (Rico Williams)
    Salah Mane KDB Fleck (Dendo)
    Vardy Jimenez Ings

I'd hold. A game week more and its all change again. I nearly raged WC post wolves but I am holding on reflection. I think to follow your plan. Use it later to set up the team for blanks and the double game weeks. A lot of mins to be played and City, Pool, Wolves will all rotate players for the latter stages of Europe etc. We have got a blank weekend on GW28.

Vardy still has a week to be fit and Rogers didn't seem to be too concerned. I doubt he would have played vs Brentford anyway.

I can take Mane not being available for one GW which would be GW25. GW26 is over 2 weeks away on Feb 8th.

TC means one player (for 2 gw:s) but BB is about four extra players. So it is much more important. And there was damage control, Salah blanked.

The triple captaincy is massively overrated really isn't it. It makes you think you are getting triple the points you usually would, but actually you'd have captained them anyway so you're only getting one extra load of points.

hahaha ... the thing with double game weeks is gives you two bites at cherry usually (except for injury) ... i played mine in Game Week 1 on Salah vs Norwich ... 1 goal + 1 assist for 12 points ... total 36 points ... could have had another 15 if he had taken his other chances haha

I am genuinely starting to convince myself that playing the TC on gameweek 1 is one of the best times to do it. Have always played it on a DGW and it always backfires...

tbh I did it because of fixture (Norwich, reputation then of attacking side but leaky) and because Salah looked on form during pre-season .. decision kinda paid off but was actually expecting another 10-15 points so was quite disappointed at the time hahaha

Easily the worst of the chips, but can still give you a nice little points boost all the same if you get lucky with it.

Maybe it's better to actually play as more of a punty thing, on a lower owned player who won't be captained much that you're convinced will do well that week.

It's not going to define anyone's season, but could mean a 40 point shift in a mini league, especially this week for those who rolled the dice on Mané over Salah.

Woaah.. 40 points is highly optimistic. A 10-12 boost is expected using triple captaincy over standard captaincy. Easily the least productive of all the chips.

    Aguero/Auba/jimi but who in midfield?

I have never had that many players with the score of 1 in a single gameweek ever - 6 out of my 11 are with a score of 1. And here was me thinking that the DGW will be amazing for my rank...
