Potential replacements for Vardy and Mané after Double Gameweek injuries

Once upon a time, Double Gameweeks lived up to expectation with something for everyone. Not anymore.

I know we’re only at the half-way stage but, up until now, this latest one has been one of the worst in living memory.

My joint-highest scorer, Diego Rico (£4.2m) was lost on the bench and on the pitch I had six players that mustered a solitary point each. It’s been a spectacular fail to date.

To rub insult to injury, I was going to sell Todd Cantwell (£5.0m) for Mark Noble (£5.0m), but Marcus Rashford’s (£9.0m) injury only encouraged me to start Mason Greenwood (£4.4m) which was a risk too far.

Weeks of planning went out the window and it just became all the more farcical and unfortunate after seeing Jamie Vardy (£9.9m) and Sadio Mané (£12.5m) get injured in the space of 24 hours.

In many ways millions of FPL managers have had a dire Double Gameweek and my Liverpool players still have another game to play. But realistically, only a captain Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) hat-trick assisted solely by Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m) can bring about a U-turn. I can live in hope for now.

Vardy Replacement

 1

Vardy’s injury in some ways is just the excuse I needed to sell him. With that said, early reports indicate that he could be back as early as next week. He may have scored 17 goals this season, but should I really persevere with a player that has only scored one goal since Gameweek 16 and has registered eight points in his last four starts? Probably not.

I think it may finally be time board the Danny Ings (£7.0m) bandwagon. The Southampton man has only scored 24 fewer points than Vardy this season, despite playing almost 300 fewer minutes.

Of course, I’m probably two months late to the party and would have to pay a premium price for him but he seems to be one of a small number of fit strikers that has been scoring regularly throughout the campaign.

Ings’ fixtures aren’t bad either. After a visit to his former club, Liverpool, he has a generous run of games until Gameweek 30. With him now in the race to get a trip to Euro 2020 with England, there’s enough incentive for him to carry on scoring goals.

Mané Replacement?

Mane injury latest as Firmino claims Double Gameweek advantage

It may be too premature to speculate, but if the Mané does have a serious injury then I may have to sell him. Of course, for many other FPL managers he is a season-keeper with a lot of tied in value and they may have the patience to keep him for a game or two if he doesn’t play. But I don’t have that sort of will power at hand, especially when I’m also dealing with an injured Vardy and a range of out of form or rotation risk players.

A replacement for Mane will require more thought and consideration when we remember the impact he has had this season.

Put simply, there isn’t really anyone else I could sell him for in a straight-swap.

At a push, I could say Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) but he is lacking in form, with no Fantasy returns since Gameweek 19. However, he has received the fourth-most number of passes (96) in the final third in the last four Gameweeks so seems to be getting the right areas, just without the reward.

But then you have a player like Willian (£7.2m) that has more touches (163) and passes received (122) in the final period than any other player over the same duration but it’s only amounted to 12 aggregate points.

Had it not been for his difficult upcoming fixtures, I may have also considered Son Heung-min (£9.9m). Since the turn of the year, among midfielders, he’s had the second-highest number of goal attempts (14). With Harry Kane (£10.8m) injured for the long-term Tottenham will rely on him even more. I genuinely hope that I don’t have to sell Mané, but if I do, the options look bleak.

Future Planning

I’m probably in a small group of FPL managers that will have two free transfers at hand after Double Gameweek 24 comes to an end. I’m in this position as I spent one free transfer on Brandon Williams (£4.1m) and opted not to buy any West Ham players.

I’ve not seen a green arrow in a long time and whilst knee jerk decisions are tempting during this time of Fantasy Football turbulence, I need to keep a level head, just as Lateriser stressed on Saturday, although I’d still like to carry out some calculated risks.

Doubling up on Sheffield United’s defence could be a viable option when considering Dean Henderson’s (£5.0m) form and their upcoming run of games. I also need to stop ignoring players like Jack Grealish (£6.6m) and Adama Traoré (£5.7m) who have been bargain midfield gems.

Apart from that, I hope Premier League clubs partake in some inspired real-life January transfers that can broaden FPL options and ultimately smash up the template team.

Soy, Madds, Vardy, Greenwood > Lascelles, Hayden, Auba, Jimenez for -8?

Is this mini WC crazy or good? Exact cash also change from 352 to 343.

I'm leaning towards a - 8 if Mane is out for sou/nor. Team needs a freshen up and prefer to have wildcard handy.

Worth doing, though not sure I’ve one week - maybe stagger it I’ve a few weeks with less hits - how long will you keep Aubameyang when he blanks in wk28?
      Will you recoup the -8?

He hasn't got a goal run to continue right now though.

The dynamic in that team has changed recently. I'm concerned he's not their primary focus for goals anymore.

I think with Laporte back the up coming city fixture is tough and then it’s a possible blank

Wolves away could still result in a return but unlikely a haul so that leaves Chelsea but will he be fit

Vardy is a difficult conundrum. His recent form has been poor and with his injury, it's far from certain that he is going to come back into the goals straight away. His value, the fact he has done so well for my team and his injury not looking serious is making the decision to ship him out that much harder.

I think towards the end of the season if he can get back to his previous form (plus other Lei assets) he will be invaluable again. It's just this next 5 game or so period.

I am waiting for more mane injury news first. If mane is out for several weeks then cashing in and shifting to Auba or Aguero for a few weeks might be more productive.

I think Vardy is the easiest of easy holds

His recent record is perfectly acceptable/explainable imo - it’s actually even great considering the circumstances

      GW18 mci - 9 (excellent)
GW19 LIV - 2 (not going to criticise for blanking vs best team in the world)
      GW20 & GW21 - 0 mins - so zero points is hard to criticise
GW22 - SOU - 1 Assist (a superb Assist) & a VAR disallowed goal millimetres from being allowed, plus a VAR disallowed Assist - would have been another haul
      GW23 - missed a pen - he’s only human - an 8 or 9 point swing with baps
GW24 off injured unluckily early somcouldnt get involved in the later goals

I think he’s going to burn his doubters quite horrifically - unless he keeps getting injured and/or keeps missing penalties - but to me those are things I don’t think you can really predict

I’m not saying selling him can’t work though, of course - given his ownership it could actually work spectacularly well...

But selling Mané for Jordan Henderson and triple captaining him going into the DGW would also have worked spectacularly well - but would it have been a logical move?

          Not for me!

I think it’s important to know when to jump ship. Form, injury and fixtures- it’s a perfect storm to sell (I swapped for Jimenez this week)
Fairly easy decision for me and can join the party again if there is one

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

Of course - timing is one of the most important aspects of FPL - but I’m not seeing anything from Vardy that suggests he’s a sell - other than unlucky injuries, ridiculously marginal VAR calls, a game against Liverpool, and an unlucky penalty miss....

Selling him looks (to me) to actually be unbelievably reckless - but again, there’s no law to say it can’t or won’t work...

But the last time I heard “And anyway, I can always get him back if he does hit form” was from TAA sellers in GW17 🙂

            Time will tell...
Didn’t own TAA but feel for the guys that sold
I have Firmino (TC btw) and can swap to Vardy if need be but happy to not own for the next 3

Time will tell the outcome yes - but it won’t make the reasoning any more or any less sound - outcomes are not always (or sometimes ever!) perfectly correlated to the logic underlying the decision

As in - Sellers may get lucky and Vardy might keep getting injured, or keep having marginally disallowed VAR attacking returns, keep missing penalties, or even lose penalties altogether - nothing is set in stone

But it won’t make change the lack of any really (non-luck based) reasoning for selling him

He’s every bit as destructive as TAA, possibly even more so, and any marginal gains from selling are (again imho 🙂 ) way too likely to be wiped out by one good captaincy game from him to even think about selling unless we had gotten word that he was going to miss a several weeks of games 🙂

Tbh I was debating removing Vardy or Rashford for Firmino and the decision was made easy with Rash injury. Have been on the lookout for Vardy replacement anyway. Doesn’t mean I am right or wrong of course.
Everyone in different position, I was 300k OR pre DGW so happy to take calculated risks

                  Yep,absolutely, it’s all about one’s personal risk appetite/tolerance

I love a good punt as much as the next man (I moved from triple pool defence to double defence weeks ago for example!)

But I’ve seen sales of a player like Vardy go so horrifically wrong many times, and there are much easier/lower risk ways of chasing a few potential quick points here & there

Ultimately, If he hadn’t been unlucky with VAR in the Southampton game, and the pen miss vs Burnley I don’t think he’d be anywhere near a candidate for sales - both of those factors were overwhelmingly luck driven, rather than ability/form driven 🙂

Such a weird season, looking at my team, and I have a somewhat decent rank, and team value is okay, there are loads of players I no longer want, but the problem is there are no players I want to bring in either.

        My problem players,

I'll go with one I own and 1 that I would love to own:

Own: McCarthy due to cheap price and good fixtures
Want: Pope back for his points in the last two since I got rid.

Own: TAA, the most important part of my triple Liverpool defence.
      Want: No one.

Own: KDB, as nailed as a City player can be with steady returns.
Want: Perez if Vardy is out for a while.

Own: Aguero, the most exciting player to own in the league - you never know if he will start but he is capable of a hat trick against anyone in the league.
Want: Jimenez, excellent value and Wolves are really hitting form.

Also own McCarthy, and I’m fine with that. Also have Fabianski, which I’m not happy about.

Have Trent, he’s the only defender I’m happy about owning...same as you, no one else I want (can’t have anymore Liverpool).

Also own KdB, season keeper. Him and Salah/Grealish are fine.

Have the opposite to you up front. But Aguero is always a headache.

If you're decided to get rid of Mane , who exactly are you considering?

The replacement choices are so uninspiring . I can't find an outstanding replacement.

      Salah
Dilva (Haller >> Kun with ££)

      That's it.

I already have KDB, Salah so if he is out for several weeks I would likely shift is value into my forward line. Upgrade DCL to Aguero or Auba.

I thought Sunderland would be okay when Moyes joined.

You need two thing in a relegation battle, an experienced manager and a goal scorer (Sunderland had Defoe)

I'm a Sunderland fan, granted it had been coming for us for a few seasons but Moyes really made the situation 100x worse from day one. Miserable, demotivational effect on both players & fans, and even taking our lack of funds into account, his transfer dealings were atrocious: McNair, Love, N'Dong, and all his finished Everton cronies (Pienaar, Gibson, Lescott, Anichibe - who was the only half decent one) brought in for one last payday.

      2. Carlton_Goal

Poor moves in the transfer market. The team is crying out for more CMs, better full backs and another striker but yet they continue to keep buying more and more attacking midfielders/wingers. We have Lanzini, Fornals, Anderson, Snodgrass, Antonio and Yarmolenko to fill 3 positions if we play 4-2-3-1 like Pellegrini was at the start of the season, yet there's no adequate cover or competition for Rice and Noble. The full backs have been a weak link for quite a while now too. The only way Moyes has improved the team is defensively, still look very poor going forward. Signing Roberto as Adrians replacement was another huge mistake as well

      Stagnancy ...

Not going to top 4/ not going to get relegated. So lack of concern from owners as they take steady ££ instead of investing huge ££in the squad. I feel WHU will be safe this season though. Moyes will keep them up. I fear for Norwich though (really love their playing style so ...)

More likely to partner Haller up top in the 3-5-2 like Anderson/Lanzini have since Moyes took over. Honestly the 4-4-2 has looked so much better whenever we've used that so not sure why he keeps reverting back to the 3-5-2 and playing Cresswell as a CB

Wait for more news on Mane & Vardy
IMO I think you should decide if you want to play 343, 442 or 352 first, as the moment your 3rd defender, 3rd forward are weak & if Mane is out so is your 4th midfielder
My suggestions would be Greenwood to Jimenez, Soy to VVD, & wait to see if you need to replace Vardy & Mane
Hope this helps as you’ve posted this a few times with reply

This season is less worry some regarding positionings of BGW's and DGW's too. So one can do without a WC during that run unlike last seasons mad 31/33 pattern.

If you're looking at a -12 I'd probably hit the WC button. You'll probably make some 'luxury' moves that you would waste a transfer on too. I'm looking at GW26 wildcard and will probably end up changing 8-9 players.

Anything more than -12 is WC worthy. I think it comes down if you feel its the right time to use and overall game strategy. For me, I don't care too much about overall rank. I only care about my mini-leagues.

If using wildcard it is ideally a great time to freshen up your bench and make sure your squad is strong for the next ten games too. If mane is out for several weeks and vardy also a doubt along with bench fodder (rico, kelly, lund, ryan, cantwell) needing a revamp.

Waiting to use the WC for a BB in Double game week in 37 might be too late. Last season it backfired for me massively and my rival pipped me having wildcarded about ten games earlier and built up points over the weeks whilst I held too much.

    Worth Wildcard or not?
    From
    Pope Button
    TAA Soy Sidibe Lund Kelly
    Salah Mane KDB Traore Cantwell
    Ings DCL Vardy

    To
    Pope McCarthy
    TAA Lascelles Cathcart Lund Ward
    Salah KDB Grealish Traore Fleck
    Auba Aguero Ings

Fleck could be Dendoncker and Ward could be Holgate.
Option of downgrading Aguero or Auba back to Vardy if he finds form.
Has plenty of scope then to upgrade defence.
    Any advice welcome.

              2/3

1 resulting from the Carabao Cup Final (GW28) Which will mean City v Arsenal is postponed and then either the Leicester or Villa games

2 resulting from the FA cup fixtures GW31 Qtr finals

Doesn't look like you'll have free cash to do such a move and other issues always arise + that is not a backline that really says play 5

              too many premiums imo

If he have 2 frees then that week, I could go Kun /Auba to Jiminez or DCL. Could do both dependant. Or a one of those plus upgrade a defender or Fleck

I like it but I would go either Auba or Aguero and bring in Jimmy instead. Use the funds to upgrade defence to two pool defenders.

    Thoughts on my WC Please!!

    Ryan Mccarthy
    Lund VVD TAA O’Connell Taylor
    Salah Fleck Trossard Grealish Traore
    Auba Aguero DCL

A good side. Only question mark is around midfield possibly lacking another big hitter. Not keen on the Trossard pick. Rest is good. Suppose it's choice of 2 big Pool defenders or an upgrade from Trossard or Fleck.

The current record for most assists in a single PL season is currently 20 (held by Henry 2002/03 season). KDB is already on 15 so looks on course to break that! What a season he is having!

I’m amazed that Henry holds that record, and for such a long time too, over the likes of prolific as sisters like Fabregas, KDB, Silva! I’m sure KDB will claim it this season, if Trent doesn’t beat him to it! 😉

I was surprised too tbh, Fabregas 2nd on the list of all time assists and Silva 7th though! Trent will have a bit of catching up to do if that's the case 😉 'only' on 10 so far, which in itself is an incredible achievement for a defender

Knee issues prevented us from taking him as a pre season template pick. Sterling's 20 pointer and goals in GWs 2-3 were also factors in us not jumping aboard sooner

People selling the likes of Maddison...

Honestly, two of my last moves took out the likes of Alli and Pope who had nothing going for 'em in terms of either form and fix.

Yet, they've since come in the points. Recurring theme and the moral of the story is to keep the likes of Maddison. Could've hauled v West Ham and the 4-1 shows they're back in form. Points are proving so unpredictable and you've just got persist with the right players. I can think of numerous examples of this e.g. Norwich looked pitifully dismal at home to Watford. Thought that'd surely be enough justification to eject Pukki and Cantwell... yet they since went on an excellent run

Cant stick with a player because of FOMO though, especially now that we are coming close to season end. Have to drop non performers, can always get them back if required.

Gain points in next 3 weeks and then reassess. FH probably in GW31/34 depending on fixtures.

It's a very small # of teams that will blank. 2 games ay max. Not worth using FH.

Re bringing in players, if they score enough till then its easy to bench them with many bench players doing well this season

      Depends if you have it.
Game weeks with limited games tend to be low scoring.
I would be thinking of getting minimum 6 players in the GW and take a chance.

  22. diesel001

If you want maximum blanks in GW31 then you want the FA Cup QFs (6th Round) participants to be:

One of Chelsea or Man City
One of Man Utd or Sheffield Utd
    Liverpool
    Leicester
    Arsenal
    Tottenham
    Norwich
    Newcastle

That would leave only two fixtures in GW31 - Wolves vs Bournemouth and Burnley vs Watford

    1. DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 2 months ago

That would leave me with one player and no FH chip lol

    2. Holmes
      • 10 Years

Which would make things very easy. WC in 32, FH in 34, BB in 37

I know. But there can only be 8 teams that make it through to the FA Cup 6th Round (which is when GW31 is due to be played). That means a minimum of 2 fixtures will be played in the PL in GW31.

The way to keep maximum blanks on the table (8) is if Bournemouth lose tomorrow.

After a dreadful gameweek I'm now in 2 minds of what to do.. do I abandon double pool mid by selling Mane (12.1) and go for double pool and sheffield defence. Keep hold and just do something like sidibe to baldock?

    McCarthy button
    Trent sidibe dunk lundy Williams
    Kdb mane grealish Salah mahrez
    Vardy ings greenwood

Which combo do you prefer for GW26 and onwards??

        A) Grealish + Son + Stephens
        B) Grealish + Jimenez + (Laporte/Doherty/ Perriera)
        C) Alli + Jimenez + Stephens

I'd love that from FPL perspective as a non owner. Hate that as a fan though means he'll score against us 😀
