What latest FA Cup action means for Blank Gameweek 31

The most recent round of FA Cup matches, and the fifth-round draw, have confirmed more details about the upcoming Blank Gameweek 31.

Burnley’s fourth-round defeat to Norwich on Saturday ensured that they will be in Premier League action on the weekend of March 21.

They will be hosting Watford, who were knocked out of the FA Cup on Thursday in their belated third-round replay.

Meanwhile, Monday night’s clash between Bournemouth and Arsenal confirmed another Blank Gameweek 31 fixture.

The Cherries’ exit means that on the weekend of March 21, they will be clear to travel to Molineux, where they will face a Wolves side already eliminated from the FA Cup.

As things stand, these are the only two fixtures guaranteed for Blank Gameweek 31, potentially firming up the Fantasy credentials of Raùl Jiménez (£7.5m), Adama Traoré (£5.7m), Troy Deeney (£6.3m), Chris Wood (£6.2m) as well as their colleagues.

However, we also have a much better idea of what it will take to either confirm or deny blanks for the other 18 teams in Gameweek 31 – because of the fifth-round draw, conducted on Monday evening, which looks like this:

  • Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
  • Reading/Cardiff v Sheffield United
  • Chelsea v Shrewsbury Town/Liverpool
  • West Bromwich Albion v Oxford United/Newcastle United
  • Leicester City v Coventry City/Birmingham City
  • Northampton Town/Derby County v Manchester United
  • Southampton/Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City
  • Portsmouth v Arsenal

As a result, this is what the Blank Gameweek 31 permutations look like:

Home vs Away Blank…
20-Mar-20 20:00 Spurs vs West Ham If Spurs beat Southampton and Norwich
21-Mar-20 12:30 Chelsea vs Man City If Chelsea beat Liverpool/Shrewsbury or if Man City beat Sheffield Wednesday
21-Mar-20 15:00 Burnley vs Watford CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 15:00 Man United vs Sheffield United If Man United beat Northampton/Derby or if Sheffield United beat Reading/Cardiff
21-Mar-20 15:00 Newcastle vs Aston Villa If Newcastle beat Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion
21-Mar-20 15:00 Norwich vs Everton If Norwich beat Spurs/Southampton
21-Mar-20 15:00 Wolves vs Bournemouth CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 17:30 Liverpool vs Crystal Palace If Liverpool beat Shrewsbury and Chelsea
22-Mar-20 14:00 Leicester vs Brighton If Leicester beat Coventry/Birmingham City
22-Mar-20 16:30 Southampton vs Arsenal If Southampton beat Spurs and Norwich or if Arsenal beat Portsmouth

Only two Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures remain where both teams are still in the FA Cup; Chelsea’s hosting of Manchester City and Sheffield United’s trip to Manchester United.

The first of those could be ‘blanked’ by either Chelsea or Shrewsbury Town or Liverpool in the next round, or by Manchester City defeating Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

There are four matches which we will not discover the fate of until after the FA Cup fourth round replays have been played.

Liverpool, Southampton, Spurs and Newcastle still have to squeeze through such matches, which take place on February 4 and 5, 2020.

Therefore, we will not know about any of the following Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures until then:

  • Liverpool v Crystal Palace
  • Southampton v Arsenal
  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham
  • Newcastle United v Aston Villa

Meanwhile, at least one of the following matches will end up as a ‘blank’ in Gameweek 31.

  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United
  • Norwich City v Everton
  • Southampton v Arsenal

This is because Spurs v West Ham and Norwich v Everton cannot both be blanked, given that the two home sides could face off in the Cup while the Hammers and Toffees are both already out of the competition.

City team sheet with kun on it tomorrow resulting in all the vardy > kun managers crying about the unknown “what have I done” “FFS” ..... “kun not playing the weekend, Should i WC, messed my team up”

Think I'm just skipping Kun on a WC at my own risk. Getting Vardy, Auba and Jimenez instead.

Yeah auba is a great shout imo

I’ve got kun but dependent on mane I may do kun>auba mane>salah

At the same time kun could easily brace against spurs

Why do you think Kun will necessarily play the whole match? They're almost certain to go through and I'd expect split Kun/Jesus pitch time. He'll be fine. Jury still out on Vardy's form.

I own kun, I’m not concerned, I’m just predicting the hysteria because managers did early transfers without thinking.

On Vardy, Ndidi’s return will likely help his form

Where did this thinking come from that a player is unable to play twice in a week?

Bringing Kun now on WC is not a big risk coz u can make rotation proof bench. Vardy is out of form , Auba is good but playin for Arsenal.

Can't belive how heated this discussion is about LFC fielding the kids. It makes no sense having a winter break if many teams are playing FA cup replays in it. Than what's the point of a winter break?

The key might be Liverpool. I’m hoping they get through and blank - that makes life much more interesting. Do you FH 31 or 34?

Can see lots playing FH31 in that scenario. Opens up a more attacking FH 34 for a potential BGW DGW for others

        Used WC this GW.
Going to FH in 34. TC is used on Mane so one less thing to worry about 😛

            Mane injury
            United awfulness (Martial)
            Aguero form
Haller punt (should have given more thought to that FT.)
All things pushed me to WC.

Only thing i don't like is I'm not able to get Son IN. Gone for Aguero. Let's see how it goes ...

I know you’ve lucked out twice with Pope but .... pen saves apart Watford are the defence I’d want to be on more. Also if you navigate 31 you want a keeper anyway

If it is possible to navigate GW31 without using the FH Chip, it might be better to save it for GW37 as the best way of dealing with the rotation carnage during the final DGW. GW34 should be easier to manage with FTs.

Very similar team to mine, but yours is better and have extra FT. As a Foxers fan I'd say sell Soy. If you're intending to keep Mane then you'd have to bench him and plan accordingly.
Prepare to sell DCL & Sidibe in two weeks for Jimi + 1. If you do decide to sell Mane then that opens up Robbo or VVD possibilities. Sorry, bit waffly.

I am not saying I have made a concerted effort to see the mood of Mane and Salah playing together, but it ain't the same as it used to be.
When watching Pool celebrate goals has anyone tto the time to see their reaction when the other scores? Maybe I am imagining it but it makes sense Werner is being eyed closely for one of them. It won't be Firmino so which of Mane/Salah is leaving Pool next season?

      they celebrate each others goals
this is just a narrative thats been started this season because Mane and Salah are at the same level and Salah isnt viewed as the talisman of the side anymore.
They both celebrate Bobbys goals with more enthusiasm than anyone elses but thats because of what bobby does for them and the team in general.
But this narrative is def media driven and not got much to back it up

I think you're right, if anything I think the strongest feature of Klopp's managerial skills is man management and he has been able to deal with it - winning streak helps obviously - but it's quite clear that there is 2 Alfa's for one spot and it feels very thin line. I would sell Salah, because they can make a load of cash at the end of the season and it's no secret that Salah's dream (and the entire nation of Egypt) is to play for Real Madrid. I think it would be smart, cash in and move on.

    So, Gunners

Any feeling about whether Kola will come back into the team when fit again, or whether Saka is doing enough to nail the LB gig ?

Saka has been impressive. I think Arteta will reward him and keep him in the team.

Tempted to captain Vardy this weekend. Think he’s due a bounce back and Chelsea’s defence isn’t great.
    Alternatively I could go Kun?

      Good side.
Worries: Choosing the 5th attacker to play, going forward. Defense a little weak if Lund loses his place.

Looks fine but your bench is a little weak to have Aguero in, especially if you still have bench boost.

There's something I don't manage to sort out from the Blank GW article.

At which date for sure will we know 100% for sure all the fixtures and non-fixtures of GW31?

    A) Jime Perez

    C) Just lose Vardy for Aguero

    Hendo McCarthy
    TAA VVD Fernandes Lund Stepehns
    Salah KDB Grealish Traore Perez
    Vardy Ings Jime

Once again I feel like when I have much less time to think about FPL I immediately make worse decisions. How do you cope with that? Like usually exams time in my Uni coincide with red arrows in FPL...

      Don’t think about it (serious).

This period between the liv vs wolves game and the coming game on Thursday I’m giving it no thought. Cup games in between, injury doubts, this was the perfect time for us managers to have a ‘winter break’. I’m coming back hard from Thursday

Hah cheers looks like a good advice. Indeed I had a winter break recently too, now I have to go back eh. My problem is usually that I wake up on Friday afternoon with having to do a transfers in mind and usually do some stupid, rushed ones.

In the beginning of the season when I could even spend couple of hours a day thinking about FPL I was doing really, really great. The question is how to arrive to those answers without spending that much time. Maybe some routine in a daily life regarding fpl is is needed hah. Nevertheless good luck for you

As long as FPL doesn't give you red arrows in exams

    WC attempt 4.1 mil itb
    Guaita (Button)
    TAA VVD Robbo Laporte Stephens
    KDB Martial Traore Perez (Guendouzi)
    Ings Auba Jimmi

    out of balance I know
Seeing how Laporte can improve my side going forward.
Can go Jimmi to Kun but not sold on it
    Mahrez or martial?

They are my calculated punts. I know they can both Troll but with bench back up, they can be lucrative.
