What latest FA Cup action means for Blank Gameweek 31

The most recent round of FA Cup matches, and the fifth-round draw, have confirmed more details about the upcoming Blank Gameweek 31.

Burnley’s fourth-round defeat to Norwich on Saturday ensured that they will be in Premier League action on the weekend of March 21.

They will be hosting Watford, who were knocked out of the FA Cup on Thursday in their belated third-round replay.

Meanwhile, Monday night’s clash between Bournemouth and Arsenal confirmed another Blank Gameweek 31 fixture.

The Cherries’ exit means that on the weekend of March 21, they will be clear to travel to Molineux, where they will face a Wolves side already eliminated from the FA Cup.

As things stand, these are the only two fixtures guaranteed for Blank Gameweek 31, potentially firming up the Fantasy credentials of Raùl Jiménez (£7.5m), Adama Traoré (£5.7m), Troy Deeney (£6.3m), Chris Wood (£6.2m) as well as their colleagues.

However, we also have a much better idea of what it will take to either confirm or deny blanks for the other 18 teams in Gameweek 31 – because of the fifth-round draw, conducted on Monday evening, which looks like this:

  • Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
  • Reading/Cardiff v Sheffield United
  • Chelsea v Shrewsbury Town/Liverpool
  • West Bromwich Albion v Oxford United/Newcastle United
  • Leicester City v Coventry City/Birmingham City
  • Northampton Town/Derby County v Manchester United
  • Southampton/Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City
  • Portsmouth v Arsenal

As a result, this is what the Blank Gameweek 31 permutations look like:

Home vs Away Blank…
20-Mar-20 20:00 Spurs vs West Ham If Spurs beat Southampton and Norwich
21-Mar-20 12:30 Chelsea vs Man City If Chelsea beat Liverpool/Shrewsbury or if Man City beat Sheffield Wednesday
21-Mar-20 15:00 Burnley vs Watford CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 15:00 Man United vs Sheffield United If Man United beat Northampton/Derby or if Sheffield United beat Reading/Cardiff
21-Mar-20 15:00 Newcastle vs Aston Villa If Newcastle beat Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion
21-Mar-20 15:00 Norwich vs Everton If Norwich beat Spurs/Southampton
21-Mar-20 15:00 Wolves vs Bournemouth CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 17:30 Liverpool vs Crystal Palace If Liverpool beat Shrewsbury and Chelsea
22-Mar-20 14:00 Leicester vs Brighton If Leicester beat Coventry/Birmingham City
22-Mar-20 16:30 Southampton vs Arsenal If Southampton beat Spurs and Norwich or if Arsenal beat Portsmouth

Only two Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures remain where both teams are still in the FA Cup; Chelsea’s hosting of Manchester City and Sheffield United’s trip to Manchester United.

The first of those could be ‘blanked’ by either Chelsea or Shrewsbury Town or Liverpool in the next round, or by Manchester City defeating Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

There are four matches which we will not discover the fate of until after the FA Cup fourth round replays have been played.

Liverpool, Southampton, Spurs and Newcastle still have to squeeze through such matches, which take place on February 4 and 5, 2020.

Therefore, we will not know about any of the following Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures until then:

  • Liverpool v Crystal Palace
  • Southampton v Arsenal
  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham
  • Newcastle United v Aston Villa

Meanwhile, at least one of the following matches will end up as a ‘blank’ in Gameweek 31.

  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United
  • Norwich City v Everton
  • Southampton v Arsenal

This is because Spurs v West Ham and Norwich v Everton cannot both be blanked, given that the two home sides could face off in the Cup while the Hammers and Toffees are both already out of the competition.

How are Vardy sellers feeling with the news he is fit?

Yes he has blanked last few but 2 he didn’t play, 1 he missed a penalty and the other he came off injured. I think he is still an amazing pick

I know a few in my ML have already done Vardy -> Aguero (-4). Really hope Vardy punishes the sellers!

I joke, didn’t he say 80% now but strongly implied he is improving - and that was about the cup game midweek - surely everything points to him being fit at the weekend (provided he doesn’t get injured in the cup)?

He said 80% which is enough to put me off, prefer in form with picks.

I’ll look to get him back when he’s 100% after his blank or may even just pump for Perez

People under estimate that pen miss and almost see it as a positive that “he could have scored and got baps”. But he didn’t, he missed. He had a one on one with the keeper with the ball stationary and missed his chance. It’s indicative of his form

It was literally predictable when he got a pen that he would miss it tbh

The upside is that he is the first choice penalty taker which means more of those "1 on 1 with the ball stationary" opportunities to come 🙂

I'd be very hesitant to write a player of Vardy's destructiveness off due to a missed penalty, two missed games, marginal VAR calls, and an unlucky injury tbh - Every penalty taker misses, some more than others - one of every 5 are missed or saved, there's a huge element of luck to taking penalties like every other aspect of the game

Id also be hesitant to roll up 1 point in 3 games missed with injury as genuine "form" - it's important to separate luck (good or bad) from the player selection process imo - when I look at Vardy's last 5-6 games I really don't see bad form, I see more bad luck, and I don't fancy betting on that bad luck to continue 🙂

I'm OK with it, was a bit daft taking a -4 for Auba so early and particularly as there's an outside chance Auba could still get sold, but Vardy is somewhat off form and I had him since GW1 so had plenty of accumulated value to cash in.

      May switch back for GW3*.

Question to the vardy haul fearmongers, would you cap him against chelsea? If not then does anyone seriously feel a brace from vardy or single goal from him will destroy their team and gw? This above all else, imo , is the question as to whether tp have him or put him on the " wait and see" list

It was sarcastic, but position is somewhere in between the two positions - particularly as someone like Robbo is likely a keep for the season so hit is amortised over the remaining game weeks.
He also saves a transfer (or hit) later.

    https://www.sheffieldunited.news/news/chris-wilder-moves-to-clarify-situation-with-mo-besic/

Interesting article and quotes here from Wilder on Mo Besic.

Besic received a lot of plaudits for his goal at the weekend with many fearing he'll now take Lundstram's place. But, on Besic's performance, Wilder's quoted as saying:

“I actually didn’t think it was one of Mo’s better performances [against Millwall]. But then he scored and he came alive, which was great.

“He had to pull something out of the bag, as the board was up and a change was in the offing. He (Besic) might have have a little peek over and thought ‘I might have to do something here to keep on the pitch,’” Wilder added.

    Good news for Lundstram owners?

but he is incredibly talented, good reading of the game, quite pacy to be a midfielder and his passing ability is very good.

Vardy will likely play if that affects your WC decision?

But yeah, your team is in a bit of a state, and I'd be tempted to WC. But on the other hand, there's gunna be a fair amount of blanks and DGW's coming up. If there's any way you can muddle through with your team, then I'd do it. As the blanks and DGW's should be lucrative for those still holding their WC and chips

Salah does nothing but blank for me when I captain him. He's such an annoying player. I dont think I can be bothered watching the ball bounce off him for 90 minutes again as my captain

I still have absolutely no idea what to do with this team. 2 FTs and 0.1 ITB.

    Ramsdale - 4.0
    TAA - Sidibe - Dunk - Lundstram - 3.9
    Salah - KDB - Maddison - Grealish - 4.4
    Vardy - Firmino - Jimenez

    What would you do?

    Thanks guys!

Yes it works, but can’t see the need to have 5 playing defenders. Will bench 2 of them every GW anyway.

Would you do the following 2 transfers for a -4 or would you wait until City have played Spurs?

    Mane & Connolly > Kun & Dendonker - going from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3

What’s with people genuinely believing Ederson could be on pens? Is most ridiculous thing I heard here in a long time. How would that even work outside a penalty shoot out, who would be in goal when Ederson taking his penalty? Walker lol?
Seen several people here discussing getting Ederson incase he does get them and holly getting him in her wc just incase 😀

I’d love to see it lmao but even pep ain’t that mental. I think all he said was Ederson was city’s beat pen taker and that’s what people basing it on. I’ve heard that before a few times in regards to keepers being best pen takers

    Kun Bobby

    Button Ings Catchart Cantwell

B by a country mile IMO.

Out of step perhaps but Mane feels like a hold to me right now. The winter break makes one game out at least a feasible outcome.

It was about this time of year last time around I sold TAA from memory - never got him back,

It’s a gamble of course but coming out the other side with double premium attack could be very differential

    How reliable is that source?

      Unreliable speculation and/or clickbait.

Even if Klopp declares that it'll be 3 weeks minimum before Mane is back training it could be either side of three weeks depending on the extent of the injury and how well he recovers. The winter break means less PL games lost but prob best to sell him for now.

Had a nightmare Dec/Jan. Here's my WC team - pending Mane updates:

    Guaita Button

    Thoughts?

    Morning All

Just a quick question on Tammy, has he been ruled out for a bit? Says 50% on FPL website but cannot find anything. He looked in a bit of pain after the Arsenal game.

If out any thoughts on a replacement?

Current FW's - Vardy Tammy Ings

I put McCarthy on WC so will inc Liverpool.. But his fixtures are great afterwards.. Dubravka is very tempting as made most saves (no1) and 4th for points.. I’m still deliberating my keeper..
