What latest FA Cup action means for Blank Gameweek 31

The most recent round of FA Cup matches, and the fifth-round draw, have confirmed more details about the upcoming Blank Gameweek 31.

Burnley’s fourth-round defeat to Norwich on Saturday ensured that they will be in Premier League action on the weekend of March 21.

They will be hosting Watford, who were knocked out of the FA Cup on Thursday in their belated third-round replay.

Meanwhile, Monday night’s clash between Bournemouth and Arsenal confirmed another Blank Gameweek 31 fixture.

The Cherries’ exit means that on the weekend of March 21, they will be clear to travel to Molineux, where they will face a Wolves side already eliminated from the FA Cup.

As things stand, these are the only two fixtures guaranteed for Blank Gameweek 31, potentially firming up the Fantasy credentials of Raùl Jiménez (£7.5m), Adama Traoré (£5.7m), Troy Deeney (£6.3m), Chris Wood (£6.2m) as well as their colleagues.

However, we also have a much better idea of what it will take to either confirm or deny blanks for the other 18 teams in Gameweek 31 – because of the fifth-round draw, conducted on Monday evening, which looks like this:

  • Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
  • Reading/Cardiff v Sheffield United
  • Chelsea v Shrewsbury Town/Liverpool
  • West Bromwich Albion v Oxford United/Newcastle United
  • Leicester City v Coventry City/Birmingham City
  • Northampton Town/Derby County v Manchester United
  • Southampton/Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City
  • Portsmouth v Arsenal

As a result, this is what the Blank Gameweek 31 permutations look like:

Home vs Away Blank…
20-Mar-20 20:00 Spurs vs West Ham If Spurs beat Southampton and Norwich
21-Mar-20 12:30 Chelsea vs Man City If Chelsea beat Liverpool/Shrewsbury or if Man City beat Sheffield Wednesday
21-Mar-20 15:00 Burnley vs Watford CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 15:00 Man United vs Sheffield United If Man United beat Northampton/Derby or if Sheffield United beat Reading/Cardiff
21-Mar-20 15:00 Newcastle vs Aston Villa If Newcastle beat Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion
21-Mar-20 15:00 Norwich vs Everton If Norwich beat Spurs/Southampton
21-Mar-20 15:00 Wolves vs Bournemouth CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 17:30 Liverpool vs Crystal Palace If Liverpool beat Shrewsbury and Chelsea
22-Mar-20 14:00 Leicester vs Brighton If Leicester beat Coventry/Birmingham City
22-Mar-20 16:30 Southampton vs Arsenal If Southampton beat Spurs and Norwich or if Arsenal beat Portsmouth

Only two Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures remain where both teams are still in the FA Cup; Chelsea’s hosting of Manchester City and Sheffield United’s trip to Manchester United.

The first of those could be ‘blanked’ by either Chelsea or Shrewsbury Town or Liverpool in the next round, or by Manchester City defeating Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

There are four matches which we will not discover the fate of until after the FA Cup fourth round replays have been played.

Liverpool, Southampton, Spurs and Newcastle still have to squeeze through such matches, which take place on February 4 and 5, 2020.

Therefore, we will not know about any of the following Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures until then:

  • Liverpool v Crystal Palace
  • Southampton v Arsenal
  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham
  • Newcastle United v Aston Villa

Meanwhile, at least one of the following matches will end up as a ‘blank’ in Gameweek 31.

  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United
  • Norwich City v Everton
  • Southampton v Arsenal

This is because Spurs v West Ham and Norwich v Everton cannot both be blanked, given that the two home sides could face off in the Cup while the Hammers and Toffees are both already out of the competition.

Not really sure how Watford defence works. If Kiko is fit by 1 Feb - as info has it - does he slot back in or is he marginal even if fit?

No Watford insight so my guess only as good as yours, but surely it is Masina's place to lose.

Holebas appears to have been relegated to B team though.

Well that Mahrez knock has thrown a spanner in the works. Can do Mahrez + Jiminez > Grealish + Vardy? On a WC. 0.7 ITB:

    Henderson Mccarthy
    TAA Gomez Lascelles Lundstram Stephens
    Salah KDB Mahrez* Traore Fleck
    Auba Jiminez Ings

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Do I WC or just hold on? This is my current team, no changes for GW25 yet,

    McCarthy
    Robertson | Kelly | Holgate
    KDB | Mane | Maddison | Grelish
    Ings | Firmino | Tammy

    Button | Cantwell | Lundstrum | Fermina

With Abraham being an inury doubt and also Mane, I am not sure what to do. I was going to go Firmino to Augero and Maddison out for a hit. Thoughts?

      WC imo

That’s a possible zero on the bench and Kelly is unlikely too. It looks like -8 just to get eleven starters you can rely on.

If you think Lund starts then you could go Tammy to Jim and Mane to Mo. Can’t see a way to triple Pool and Kun without a minus 8

    Best move here with 2FTs?

Mané >> Traoré and then get Kun or Auba? Also quite keen on Ings for next GW and Jimmy for the GW after.

A Mo brace tomorrow and that will seem like easier for sure. If he's likely to start you can hokey cokey with Kun I guess, but at 1.3m less and nobody in any of my ML owning, it would be fun to have Auba for a while.

Yeah, Mane+Maupay >> Traoré+Kun for free looks like the smart move yeah? Just waiting on Mané news, Kun minutes midweek, Mahrez injury update. And also if like to find funds for Ings and Jimmy ideal 🙂 might WC next week actually

Morning. Tinkering with my WC and can't decide on this one:

VVD & 5m ish defeneder (say Aurier / Soy .....I already have SHU Stevens in my draft, and TAA)

    vs

    Gomez & Doherty

Question for wildcarders? When do you intend to bench boost?

A..... bgw 31 and use fts to prepare for the big double

B....use fts for bgw31 and free hit for the big double

BGW fixtures look pretty uninspiring, if you can get say 8 out that might be enough and free hit for double. No idea when to boost.

I was planning on using FH on 31 but now... it seems very probable that on top of the 2 matches already confirmed will be +2 or +3 including the Liverpool vs Palace match. If this is confirmed you can perfectly field 11 players without the FH

    TAA Lundstram Holgate
    KDB Mane* Salah Martial

Nothing major, just fixtures and more info.

Ryan, Holgate, Maupay, Martial have decent fixture this week, especially when we look at possible incoming players fixtures.

Whether Lundstram is going to start or not. Whether Vardy is worth keeping for long term. Any surprise DGW. Whether Mane returns for Norwich game or not.

Similar to mine. Tricky situation. I’m guessing you could do Mané >> Traoré and Maupay >> Kun also? Or Auba.
Vardy is fine and his next 3 fixtures are ideal for him as they won’t just sit and defend, they don’t really have very good defences and he loves the bigger teams anyways

Could do but the big blank in 31 or the likely BGW DGW in 34 feel better to me.

Can’t see marginal players such as a Fleck JOC are worth it. Lose those two and you can ride out 28 easily enough with a couple of FTs

I'm curious to know how much Brits appreciate FA & league cups. Are they considered consolation for teams who have rough time at the league, so they could win at least some sort of trophy, or is their status purely nostalgic? Would you rather get rid or is it best to hold on?

Nice day out, but doesn't make up for crappy season.
FA Cup was huge when I was a kid, no other games on that day either back then.
Should scrap League Cup, move FA Cup final forward to that slot.

My ex-roommate (Arsenal fan) in London used to rave about importance of FA cup, and I always thought it's just because their glory days at the league were long gone.

It's a tough one. In theory its a great competition and allows the big guns to be brought down to earth a bit. The demise of the FA cup says a lot about the state of the game generally I'd say, the CL and the PL are where the money is and they also motivate both domestic and foreign born players. I'd like to see everything done to bolster the importance of the cup myself having supported a team that never has and possibly never will win a title 🙂
League Cup I think people are far less bothered about and can be tinkered with.

Spot on. The only way to energise it IMO is to throw cash. Just get substantial financial prizes from quarter final onwards for example and I'm sure Klopp would stop disrespecting it really really quickly.

With my entitled UTD hat on they are not worth much any more - LVG got sacked after winning FA Cup - don't remember anything about half the finals we reached since 1999, though have a clear recollection of 1985 Final (showing my age).
Also remember following Stockport County as they knocked out 3 PL teams on the way to League Cup semi - without doubt, the biggest season that they have ever had (got promoted too) so would be a real shame for "smaller" clubs if the cups were further weakened.

    Morning all

Although there are a number of things I would change, I’m thinking I might be wiser to hold onto the WC.

What do you think to these moves?

    GW25: Mané, DCL > Traoré, Kun (-4)
GW26: Soy > Robbo and downgrade Martial

    Team for GW25 would be:

    0.3itb
    McCarthy
    TAA, Lunds, Holgate
    Salah, KDB, Martial, Traoré
    Aguero, Vardy, Ings
    (McGovern) (Cantwell, Soy, Williams)

    Cheers 🙂

Just think Kun ship has possibly already sailed - 2, 3 weeks ago was the time to get him in.
Ars results aren't great, but they don't seem to have an issue with putting the ball in the net - Auba record against Burnley is huge and next few fixtures after that dreamy too.

Not seen him mentioned anywhere but is Tarkowski an interesting differential?

Burnley fixtures in defence look quite ok here on in. Despite recent horrid defence he’s only a point off Soy and only SU defence has outpointed him so far among cheaper options. Always a chance of attacking returns

Know what you mean but Burnley is one of those teams I’d back for a few cs from here on in and he does periodically get attacking returns.

It’s a punt of course - all differentials are - but as relegation battle looms I can see Burnley grinding out results. And well his returns on the season to date are pretty fair - check out season value tab 🙂

I’m tempted to WC but I don’t think it’s worth using it for only 2 changes in my front 7 starting players. Mané and DCL to Pérez and Auba.

That would allow me to get double Liverpool defense with TAA and VVD
The other changes would be keepers and bench players...

    On -4

    Aguero Ings DCL

The more time that passes the more sinister things get imo

They have the best medics in the world working on him the last week and they still can't publicise exactly what the problem and professionally diagnosed recovery periods are
