Big chances for Aubameyang as Arsenal remain work in progress under Arteta

Burnley 0-0 Arsenal

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: David Luiz (£5.7m) x3, Hector Bellerin (£5.4m) x2, Charlie Taylor (£4.2m), Bernd Leno (£5.0m) x1

Arsenal enjoy one of the best runs of fixtures in the Premier League over the next two months but it won’t be just the blank in Gameweek 28 (and a potential postponement in Gameweek 31) that gives Fantasy managers reason to doubt the Gunners at present.

We have used the words “work in progress” on umpteen occasions since Mikel Arteta’s appointment and, as mentioned in previous articles, it may not be until 2020/21 that we see the ex-Manchester City assistant really make a telling impact at the Emirates.

There is no doubting that Arteta has already put his own stamp on Unai Emery’s former side.

Only Liverpool and Spurs have conceded fewer league goals than the Gunners since he took charge, while the aggressive pressing we have seen from the north Londoners from Boxing Day onwards is lifted straight from the Pep Guardiola coaching manual.

At times, Arteta’s Arsenal look like a very good team indeed.

Burnley couldn’t cope with their visitors in the first 25 minutes of Sunday’s match, with Sean Dyche’s troops reduced to aimless long hoofs upfield (and no, that isn’t Plan A) in a bid to relieve the incessant pressure.

Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) was finding a lot of space in between the Clarets’ defence and midfield, while premium FPL forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) both had excellent opportunities to break the deadlock.

The pair combined as early as the first minute, with Lacazette nodding a cross from his teammate agonisingly off-target.

Aubameyang, transferred in by over 280,000 FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 25, wasted two superb chances of his own, skewing horribly wide from a David Luiz (£5.7m) pass before seeing an attempted lob smothered by the advancing Nick Pope (£4.6m) when latching onto a similar through-ball from Granit Xhaka (£5.1m).

A fine James Tarkowski (£5.1m) tackle had denied Lacazette his first away league goal in a year in between those efforts and Arsenal would have been good value for the lead at that point.

As has been the case previously, however, the Gunners could neither make their early pressure count or sustain their dominance.

Fatigue had evidently been an issue in the defeat to Chelsea in Gameweek 20 but there were parallels with the Crystal Palace game in how Burnley strong-armed their way back into this one, with Arsenal unable to regain a foothold for long periods.

Arteta said after full-time:

I think we started really, really well, we could have scored at least two. We dominated the game like we wanted, we got out from their pressure pretty well, we played in the opponents’ half and we controlled the long balls and second balls.

After 20 to 25 minutes, we started to concede a lot of unnecessary free-kicks, throw-ins, corner-kicks and when that happens you can’t find any continuity in your play and that is not the game we want to play.

I was very disappointed with the way we started the second half, the first 15 to 20 minutes we could not control any aspect of the game and we allowed a lot of crosses and second balls inside our box, and at some stages, we were lucky not to concede a goal.

The positive thing is the reaction in the last 20 minutes, when we started to play again, we had the courage to play and the courage to take the opportunity that they allowed. The space was there because they committed a lot of people forward but we couldn’t finish the actions well enough to score.

While there has been a definite improvement in an individual and collective sense in defence – Shkodran Mustafi (£5.1m) was again unrecognisably impressive at centre-half – some familiar failings remain at the back.

Burnley clearly targeted the Gunners with deliveries from wide areas, with one comical moment occurring shortly before half-time when the Clarets implored referee Chris Kavanagh to award a free-kick rather than play advantage in a promising position.

Over half of Burnley’s efforts came from headers, with Tarkowski, Ben Mee (£5.0m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.4m) all missing presentable chances in the air.

The best opportunity of all fell to Jay Rodriguez (£5.7m), who rattled the underside of the bar with a volleyed effort from close range on 78 minutes following another cross and headed lay-off.

The loss of Bukayo Saka (£4.5m) to injury at half-time didn’t help the Gunners, with Xhaka forced to deputise at left-back and unable to offer the kind of attacking thrust that the teenager had been providing in the first half.

Arteta said of Saka’s fitness after full-time:

He had a knock in his knee and his hip, so we will see.

He’s been a threat for us and in the way we planned the game, we thought we could exploit them with him and he did really well when he was fit.

I think in the last 10/15 minutes [of the first half] he was carrying his injury. We decided to substitute him because he wasn’t feeling good, so tomorrow we will know how he is.

Gabriel Martinelli (£4.6m) was also nowhere near as effective as he had been in recent weeks, with a switch of flanks to accommodate Aubameyang’s return seemingly having a negative impact on the young Brazilian.

The only Arsenal player with double-digit FPL ownership, Aubameyang will be the main candidate for inclusion in our squads either side of Blank Gameweek 28.

Seven straight matches against sides ranked ninth or below sees Arsenal riding high in our Season Ticker, and Aubameyang’s existing and prospective owners would have been encouraged at the positions he found himself in at Turf Moor.

Another excellent chance presented itself in the 75th minute, with the Gabon international nodding a Lacazette cross just wide.

Overall, though, the Gunners are flattering to deceive under Arteta from an underlying attacking stats perspective: only two clubs have had fewer shots from Gameweeks 19-25, while just three teams have carved out fewer big chances.

Burnley’s fixture schedule is less inviting (matches against a much-improved Southampton, Spurs and Manchester City are to come before the March international break) but there are more appealing games against Newcastle and Bournemouth in the short-term and a guaranteed fixture in Blank Gameweek 31.

Pope is doing his best to establish himself as a set-and-forget goalkeeper whatever the opposition, having registered an unfathomable total of 28 points in matches against Manchester United, Leicester City and now Arsenal.

His ninth clean sheet of the season (no FPL goalkeeper has more) could have been even better, had Opta adjudged an injury-time catch to be from a Martinelli shot on goal rather than a cross – that would have not only handed him a save point but some bonus points, too.

Dyche was full of praise for his troops after the game, saying:

It’s probably our best all-round performance of the season and if there’s a tiny niggle, I felt we deserved to win it with the chances we created. I thought the whole performance level was good, but you don’t want to get greedy.

I thought the front two were excellent. How one of them hasn’t got on the scoresheet is a surprise, and their partnership grows in the absence of Ashley Barnes.

Behind that, the midfield does an excellent job with and without the ball, and the back four have been solid.

Once you get all those connections right, you are heading the right way, and when you don’t you have a keeper behind them who is outstanding.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick, Cork, Westwood, McNeil; Wood, Rodriguez.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Bellerin, Mustafi, Luiz, Saka (Torreira 46′); Guendouzi, Xhaka; Aubameyang, Ozil (Willock 63′), Martinelli; Lacazette (Nketiah 89′).

    Bottomed 🙁

Been saying for ages we need a new chip.

We need the 'captain swap' chip - sack off TC chip.

Captain swap chip needs to be played before midnight on the day of the game, not by the end of the game week.

i.e. captain Salah gets 2 points, but Aguero scored 15 - you need to play captain swap by midnight that day, even if there are PL games the next day within the same game week.

How about, "Actually I wish I hadn't WCed chip" that restores pre-WC team?

I think it would be more interesting if TC chips couldn't be played in DGWs. We would see a lot more variation in strategy as to when people played it.

I'd prefer a chip that automatically doubles the points of the highest scorer in your team for the gameweek. Or a chip that allows you to score double points from C and VC.

The fantasy game for CL has a great captaincy mechanism; if your captain is playing on the first match day of the week, you can switch to your vice if the vice has yet to play. Would be a nice chip to have in FPL as well.

I answered it and I still not have changed my mind -

Nope this would be a poor rule - it is like training wheels for an fpl player. You make your decision based on logic.
I started the year without Sterling, Salah and had Ailsson. Also recently I benched TAA for his 24 points (leicester form team against them at the time).
You live and die by your decisions just make sure you research them and you will not feel so bad.

The mane injury was just unlucky. I TC - TAA and VC Salah. TAA could easily have conceded v West Ham or Salah could have missed his penalty.
There is a large element of luck to the game.
There are many fpl players who are struggling at the moment.
Well known ones in the 'fpl community'
      Mark Sutherns:

      And Andy of LTFPL
      https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/58/event/24

They both captained Mane - at least you can console yourself that you are in good company with that decision.

Even with the GW 28 blank around the corner, I've been open to moving Deeney and Son > Aguero and Fleck.
Aguero had his chances yesterday against Spurs having 6 attempts at goal in the hour or so he was on the field. I recently talked him up in an article with the following stats before the start of GW 25...

"In fact, he’s only played 1,107 minutes in the league this season. That’s a goal every 69.1 minutes. To put this into perspective, Vardy’s average goal per minute is 113.6 minutes, Ings is 116.8, Jesus is 131.2 and Aubameyang is 138.7"

Ironically each of the above failed to score at the weekend.

Add Salah to the equation and his 14 goals come in at 134.5 mins per goal.

    Liverpool's next 3
04/02/20 Shrewsbury FA Cup (the kids already lined up)
    15/02/20 Norwich away
    18/02/20 Atletico Madrid away

    Man City's next 3
    09/02/20 West Ham home
    22/02/20 Leicester away
    26/02/20 Real Madrid away

The way I'm looking at this is Salah is a bigger rotation risk on the Saturday against Norwich. Many may keep the armband on him given his recent hauls but I'm not quite sure. He will have to play some part as 17 days (since GW 25) without a game wouldn't be beneficial to his match fitness.

Though looking at City's fixtures and that very enticing game against West Ham at home is making me want Aguero (C)/KDB (VC) more than anything. Aguero has to start in Sunday's game surely and demand penalties whilst he's at it 😀 Then they get their Winter break so no worries regarding fatigue entering this period. It's the Leicester away game which I'd expect Aguero to get a rest. Whilst it's a huge game with Leicester just 2 points behind with a game in hand, the CL clash just 4 days later is even bigger.

Though this is Pep and I can't get my head around some of his moves. I know Zinchenko getting his marching orders meant Cancelo coming on was a must. But taking the best striker in the league off already 1-0 down seemed madness in terms of chasing the game.

The jury is out and I won't be making my mind up until Friday. I guess it comes down to, if you owned Salah and Aguero, who would you be more confident in having the armband? If I think City could have another 5-0 repeat of the opening game of the season against West Ham, then sure;y I need to back this up?

Wouldn't be suprised to see him Benched v West ham to protect him from being the meat in a Declan Rice/Ogbobna/Diop triple decker sandwich

Kun could rock up vs Madrid after 6 months off & he'd still be lethal - the extended break will probably do him good

I think it constant rotation has hindered city this year. Maybe he is panicking or has given up on the league.

At his football writers speech last year Pep (half joking) said that maybe himself and Jurgen could swap the PL throphy and European Cup this year. As those are the ones they really want.

4/96 days is perfect for restitution, typical deload window before a big event. If anything, it strengthens Aguero's chances of getting a full game vs Leicester and, if the rest is to come anywhere, would rather be against a less challenging team like West Ham. Leicester will be better matching pre-RM for Aguero, and then he'll get a full rest from regular training with some good restitution work before RM.

Might as well keep Vardy and Mahrez - if selected - could smash West Ham so A.
      C. Taylor this week I guess and Fernandez for Soy at some point?

Thanks for your insight on NUFC defenders. Got Fernandez on WC last week; made my early Saturday evening.

Reece James is an option. Two home games in the 'tough' games before the schedule clears in gw28, and I fancy his attacking threat until then at least compensates for objectively weaker C's probabilities in gw 26 and 27. I also have a hunch they'll CS vs United; Chelsea Are susceptible on the flanks defensively, but United's flank play shouldn't be feared.

Same I will just keep Bobby until he Blanks then ship him. I only intended to have for two weeks tbh but given last game I will keep him And assess on a weekly basis. When he does go eventually it will be for VVD not Robbo. Honestly I think Bobby is over-priced, good for a double and when in form but soon as his form vanishes he ain’t worth it at all. Besides might want vardy back at some point

I was going to go the double liverpool defence route. But there are so many viable cheap defensive options stephens - lascelles etc the decision was made easy for me. Greenwood out firmino in. Actually took a -8 to freshen the team up.

We will probably have clear idea after next FA Cup round.

BGW28 shouldn't be an issue as long as you can field 8-10 players. GW31 looks waste of time. FH in 34, TC/BB in 37, WC whenever required etc etc, tough to make any decision as of now.

I looked at the recent points scores some of stephens have been very impressive -

        Since gw 18 Stephens:
        10, 6, 2, 11, 2, 1 ,11, -1
I was really surprised by this to be honest - was blinded by the more glamorous picks I suppose.

        Since gw18 Bertrand:
        2, 5, 2, 6, 2, 1, 6 ,0

It kind of blows the Bertrand better attacking option out of the window. It does not seem to translate in points.

Stephens has been so impressive and .4 cheaper than Bertrand. I am considering getting him for a -4 for Cathcart gw28

How aggressive are people being with transfers to get a team/decent team set for gw 28?

    I have already taken a -8
    Son IN Martial OUT
    Firmino IN Greenwood OUT
    Lascelles IN Lundstram OUT

I was planning to save a transfer gw 27 so I can do

    McCarthy IN Button OUT
    Barnes IN Grealish OUT

But I also have Cathcart playing liverpool and that could easily be a 1 point/0 points/ -1 points
So would it be worth getting Stephens in for Cathcart as well for another -4?

I still have BB/FH and second wildcard but I am loath to use them as I feel -8/-12 over three gameweeks seems reasonable enough.

    Ryan
    TAA, Stevens, Aurier
    Salah, KDB, Martial*, Grealish
    Firmino, Ings, Jiminez

    Button, Lundstrum*, Rico, Dendonker* ... 1FT 1.3itb

Reckon it is worth doing Lundstrum ---> Bertrand this week? Or just save FT?

      Save

He could come back into favour and you’re ahead of the game with SU defence anyway.

I’d be looking at Martial to Son as a higher priority next time especially if Spurs go out of the cup.

      Nice team btw.

There is absolutely no point asking people on here if they think Aguero will start, the only person that knows is Pep!
You take the risk knowing he could be benched or score 20 points, just ask yourself if the risk is worth it or not.

Wouldn't be surprised if he looks at what we want hiom to do and does the opposite just for laughs.
Until this year, City were so far ahead he could get away with it too.

I swear Pep plays fantasy, he has made a few indirect comments now that suggests he is aware of it. And his team selections appear to be aimed at screwing over rival fantasy managers lol. For instance he will get in Jesus and bench Kun when Kun gets popular on fantasy, same with Mahrez.

It is great way to climb up the ranks an Indian fella on Meet the Manager tipped him before he got his big score.
He is an excptional fpl player think he works in the finance markets or something. Great eye for a transfer and the value move.

Is it worth doing Mane + Lund + Haller > Aguero + Gomez + 6.6 mill midfielder (unsure who) for a hit?
