Can FPL bosses expect more attacking returns from Spurs winger Steven Bergwijn?

Steven Bergwijn (£7.5m) is off and running already in Fantasy Premier League, having scored Tottenham Hotspur’s opening goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Bergwijn’s double-digit haul on his debut has already put him on the FPL radar, with the Dutch winger the third-most-popular transfer target among Fantasy midfielders in the run-up to Gameweek 26.

The Netherlands international was signed by Spurs only last week, joining the Lilywhites from PSV Eindhoven in a reported £27m deal.

Bergwijn has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract with Jose Mourinho’s side and it was perhaps telling that his new manager threw him straight into the starting XI against Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions on Sunday.

Mourinho said of Bergwijn’s display after full-time:

It was a debut goal that was the icing on the cake of a very good performance. Independent of the goal I would say his performance was very good, very solid. Very mature.

We worked hard during the week. He came to us Tuesday so he had a complete week to work and to try as fast as possible to understand what we wanted from him.

So very solid performance against such a difficult opponent like Kyle Walker, but then he was clever enough to appear also in other zones and try to create some problems for City.

So very, very good performance. Also defensively very aware of his position, defending zonal, covering spaces. Very, very good and then, of course, the goal is a great goal. It’s so important for us.

Is Bergwijn a viable cheaper alternative to Son Heung-min (£10.0m) then or indeed an appealing midfield option in his own right?

Our Scout Report below uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, so only those who have signed up to valid packages will be able to access it in full.

The History and Statistics

Born in October 1997, Bergwijn was on the books of Ajax as a youth before switching allegiances to PSV in 2011.

The winger progressed to the club’s under-19 side before making his debut for Jong PSV (the Dutch giants’ reserve team) at the age of 16 in August 2014.

Bergwijn went on to make 31 appearances for Jong PSV in Eerste Divisie (the Dutch second tier), scoring on 14 occasions and claiming six assists.

The then-teenage attacker caught the eye of PSV head coach Philip Cocu during his spell with the reserves, intermittently appearing for the senior team in both the Eredivisie and UEFA Champions League until his breakthrough season arrived in 2016/17.

Appearing mostly as a substitute in that campaign, Bergwijn established himself as a first-team regular in 2017/18 and was directly involved in 19 of his side’s league goals.

An explosive 2018/19 saw him register 14 goals and 12 assists in 33 Eredivisie appearances, with the new Spurs signing coming up against his future employers at Wembley in a Champions League group stage match in November 2018.

Bergwijn had already plundered 15 attacking returns in 16 top-flight starts for PSV this season before his move to north London, departing Eindhoven having scored 29 goals and registered 35 assists in 112 Eredivisie games.

The full breakdown is as follows:

SeasonAppsGoalsAssists
2014/15100
2015/16500
2016/172522
2017/1832811
2018/19331412
2019/2016510

Having represented the Netherlands at every age level from under-17s upwards, Bergwijn made his debut for the national side in October 2018 and has gone on to feature for his country on nine occasions (without scoring).

I normally play my WC when there's a fair few players I want that I don't have.

People using their WC now seem to be doing it because of players they want to get rid of, rather than ones they want?

Good observation, I'd agree with that. That's why I'll probably wait until after the 28 blank and by then we'll have some options hopefully!

      Totally agree.
Way more popular owned players blanking, out of form, or dropped, than any desire to bring in their replacements.

The perfect transfer has push & pull factors. I'm on a wc purely down to push... too many doubtful starters. Not feeling the pull of new players this time, just housekeeping, and it's not as exciting!

I think the important point, for me, is that there aren't a lot of players performing well right now. I don't see who I'd go for!

I think selling players you don't want to have is valid particularly if they aren't playing but the problem right now is who to go for. Blank upcoming, so many players out of form.. I'm very happy to hold.

      Not sure about that.

I really don't want Soyoncu, Webster, Kelly, Maddison, Cantwell, Vardy, Greenwood and DCL anymore.

I really do want double SHU defence, Doherty Traore Jimenez, Ings, and Aguero captain Vs West Ham, plus s few that I don't hugely want but are better for my squad such as Barnes and Lascelles

Are you sure Aguero will start against West Ham?!

Interesting that you don't want DCL and Cantwell.

        DCL has CPL next.
Cantwell has some good fixtures over the next month or so, still good as a 1st sub IMO

    Lose which one?

    A) Lundstram - lose value, great fixtures, dropped, blanks 28
    B) Webster - incapable of clean sheets, starts, plays in 28

Webster has a good ficture in GW28. Myriads of Hendo/O'Connell/Stevens/Baldock owners - you cannot afford for a SHU clean sheet, but wait until nearer the time unless you're cash strapped.

Cheers for the reply. Think it will reluctantly be Lundstram who goes. Plenty in the bank for a replacement but might go for a Southampton double up with Stephens. Great underlying stats.

Southampton look very good defensively if you compare their stats to Sheffield United. Can't bring in a Blades defender cause of the blank in 28 so my options are down to Stephens, Boly or Fernandez

Just feels wrong bringing in a 2nd defence asset from a team that just shipped 4.

I brought Lascelles in for Kelly last week and only have KDB and Grealish to blank in 28 so can afford to bring a blade in to bench given their form and fixtures. 0.1 short for Stevens and Boly as a pair.

Not ruled out Stephens yet, just feels like a risk.

Anyone considered the permutations of the replays tonight?

I’m thinking if Liverpool and Newcastle both lose tonight, I can probably get through GW31 without FH.

If Liverpool were to get knocked out to either Shrewsbury or Chelsea I would seriously reconsider playing FH in 31 given most will have 3 pool and everyone will have Salah captain.

So are you planing to play FH31 currently?
But if Liverpool go out you wouldn’t?

I have three Liverpool players currently, as most do I’m assuming, plus a couple of others from the already confirmed fixtures.
If I can get 9/10 players in 31 I’d probably save FH for a double.

This is pretty much it. Liverpool get knocked out and I can probably squeeze out 6/7 which wouldn't be far off the average. Would love to keep the FH for a double.

From my current team I’d have

            Taylor, Trent
            Salah, Mane, Zaha
            Jimenez

I could bring in a Watford defender to replace Lundstram this week.

Also if Spurs can knock out Sou tomorrow that adds McCarthy, and I’d be pretty much there.

Arsenal who play Saints in 31 are still in the cup and have Pompey next round so Saints might not blank even if they are knocked out.

If Liverpool goes out, and they will play a team that is U20 vs a league one team, Anfield might help them but i would be surprised if they don´t get beaten. If Liverpool is knocked out then FH in 31 might not be needed, as it is like this; Southampton and Spurs plays for next round vs Norwich, which means two out of those goes out, which means either Spurs-West ham or Norwich-Everton goes as planned. Liverpool will be the key, I think we´ll get at least 2 or 3 more games in 31.

What happens if Live get through tonight (as they no doubt will) and then lose to Chelsea in the 5th round? Is this not much more likely - dependent on whether Klopp plays a 2nd XI?

Same, if they lose to Chelsea their GW31 match goes ahead.
But I’d rather know tonight so I can start planning for a future knowing I won’t play FH31.

Actually think they’ll struggle tonight, they’re playing their youth team, who got beat 5-0 by Villa last time out.

Yep - really coming around to the idea of dealing with GW31 using FT's only - ESPECIALLY IF - Liverpool
don't progress in the FA cup.

Given the various permutations i think the FH team if used in 31 is
going to be thoroughly unexciting as there are probably only 4 or 5 games taking place, this will then
leave FH available for GW34 which, imo, is going to be more difficult to navigate given there could
well be 3 or 4 blanks in the GW (plus the doubles).
If Liverpool (and ideally Spurs) get knocked out then you can get to a couple of spurs, 3x pool and 2x
or 3x wolves that gives you 7/8 players, add 2 or 3 others and jobs done which shouldn't be overly
diffcult. If pool / spurs do progress that leaves wolves/bourne, burnley/watford, norwich/everton &
maybe newcastle/villa - i think there are only 5 players i would actually want to own for those games
      anyway!

I also have WC left so can dead end the team into GW 31/32 when fixtures also swing nicely anyway
and i can get rid of the dross knowing who has which games yet to play for the remaining season

Yep, the more I think on it, Liverpool out tonight and no way I’ll FH31.
I’ve got Salah, Mane and Trent anyway, and if I was picking a FH team in 31, they’d be the first three names I’d pick anyway.

Also I’ve got Jiminez, Zaha, and Taylor from Burnley.

        Even if we only get,

Burn, Bou, wol, wat, liv, and pal.
I can get 10 players easily enough by 31.

Regarding fixture difficulty ratings, since pretty much every ”top team” except Liverpool are dropping turds left and right I feel as if those ratings are kind of skewed this year.

      Those ratings are always screwed.
Don’t pay any attention to them.
Also they take no consideration to whether it’s a difficult fixture depending on defenders or attackers.

I would wait for replay in carabou cup, but this is borderline wc territory but if yo rather wait i think (if Liverpool goes out) Lund to one of SHU nailed defenders, say Egan/basham/o connell, Kelly to Van dijk and somebody in for martial, this way you solve your defence, and then Soy just have one tough in 27 then you can perhaps use him again after that. I haven´t done the math but it leaves you with something like 7-7-5 for midfield slot? Not much to be upbeat about there but Moura, as you then get Villa and if WC in 29 he will be a 2-3 weeks punt? to do this as -8 i´m not sure of though, i have something similar of a problem and i wc in 25 to try to get early on SHU def and Liv double def, which paid off but i made a cap blunder or actually not a blunder but a carefully chosen one, but Kun decided to leave his shooting boots home in Manchester.

Stevens by a country mile if you watch games and stats also back this up, if i were to choose two, which i already have, i would go Basham/Egan as this leaves you, in my opinion to a little more easy choice if you for instance wants to bench one and play the other one, if you plan to play both in almost every game i would go both fullbacks, if not, then maybe one of Egan or Basham alongside Stevens.

    5. bench boost for every gamew…
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 2 months ago

In my head before i wildcarded in 25, 2 SHu def was def in, i chose to go 3, with Hendo in goal with Mccarthy as back up goalie,so that blank in 28 only means i would have to play double LIv defense, mccarthy vs West ham and Lascelles vs burnley.

Reason why is that i´m tired of hoping for Dunk goals, Sidibe assists and other likes who offers "potentia" but their teams can´t defend so felt i need to do something else, which was SHU and LIv defense, my thinking is that they have kept 20 cs between them in 25 weeks, that´s almost 1 cs pr gameweek, which means (in theory) there´s good chance one will get one among them, instead of hpoing for cs among Brighton, Watford and Everton, who are so unpredictable. And with VVD and Robertson i get some attacking potential as well, they are doing well in the bps system and Stevens offers good value. Basham is the one i chose that does not have that but last year he had 4g and 2a, a lot of them came in the last part of the season-)

You need players to be in match rythm and Ian Wright should know this as a player, but a change in focus (from PL to CHL) could perhaps means the odd benching here and there. Whenwe go in to that segue around the Madrid games, KDb is in my head dispensible, he will almost certainly be rested for one or two games as Pep knows that without him they are severely harmed/weakened.

Last season Man City’s rearranged bgw28 fixture vs Everton (due to City reaching the EFL Cup Final) was scheduled on 27th January to be played 10 days later on 6th February. Chelsea’s corresponding fixture vs Brighton was not announced until 20th March due to Brighton’s FA Cup 4th round replay, and subsequent victory, vs West Brom.

Given none of the four clubs affected by the postponed bgw28 fixtures have FA Cup 4th round replays this week (i.e. their fates have already been sealed), it seems strange that the rescheduled PL fixtures haven’t already been announced. There isn’t the opportunity to simply push them back into the midweek slot of gw28 because 3 of the 4 teams are in FA Cup 5th round action on those dates.

The way I see it, we have 3 possible outcomes for Mci/Ars and Shu/Avl:

    1) Games are played during winter break in gw26 (based on the 10 day turnaround given to City and Everton last season, this is still a viable option). I would argue winter-break-gate and everything going on with Liverpool’s Academy playing tonight in a senior comp would deter the PL from wanting to add fuel to an already smoking media circus around this. For this reason alone, a dgw26 seems unlikely.

    2) The games are played in the same week as European competitions. This again seems unlikely. There are some UEFA rules/guidelines around playing top flight domestic games on the same dates as UCL/Europa League matches. Unfortunately, although the two sets of fixtures are spread across four weeks, Arsenal and City’s games vs Madrid and Olympiakos, respectively, are on alternating dates, making fitting in the rescheduled PL game practically impossible. Given both clubs are odds on with the bookies to qualify, it would seem unlikely the PL would try to shoehorn the fixture in to coincide with the later stages of European competitions, although this could change should both teams be eliminated early. The Sheff Utd vs Villa game could easily be slotted in for a dgw somewhere between gw26 and gw30.

    3) Triple game week! Should Arsenal/City progress deep into the FA Cup, there’s the prospect of a tgw37. There’s a real possibility that rearranged fixtures from gw34 (fa cup semi finals) could just be pushed back into midweek - making it a single gw. If none of the teams with a blank in gw28 make the fa cup semi finals, it would seem likely the rearranged for tires would be placed here, which the original gw34 fixtures moving to the midweek slot.

Given what Pep has said recently about City’s focus on the cup comps this season, along with their favourable draw, UEFA’s rules around fixture clashes, and that gap after the weekend gw34 games, I think we’re looking at a tgw37, with no additional double ups this year. That would leave most still holding all their chips the conundrum of playing one of them in a single gameweek.

But 2 can happen after Real put City out of CL. They're looking more of a dead duck week after week. Bookies only have them CL favourites to draw in casual punters.

I haven't a clue. Wait and see. If FA, PL and UEFA had their way they'd have teams playing every second day and cash in on TV deals. I like the TGW plan though. Would really throw some cats in the pigeonhouse at the end of the season. Especially if a load of chips backfired which they often do.

Any thoughts on Bertrand. Is it his place to be taken with Danny Rose coming? I would like to have Southampton defender for incoming fixtures, but no one passed the eye test, but Bertrand....or may be Rose is the one to take?

Rose went to Newcastle my friend, so no danger there. Do you mean Walker-Peters? I should imagine KWP is back up or a replacement for Cedric.

Even if he's injured why did Southampton loan Cedric to Arsenal?

when he used 25million on a player that went straight in after one day after his arrival you would think chances are slim. Berge was also very good vs palace, and tbf, a much better player-)

      Fugettaboutit.

Do a sideways move with Lundstram and then move on. If he is not benched this week, he will be getting partial time at best.

can I grab your thoughts on what to do here, team facing issues but reluctant to WC

    McCarthy
    TAA Egan Lund Kelly Rico
    KDB Salah Traore Sarr Grealish
    Maupay Vardy Aguero

    1FT

I was looking at Vardy and Kelly to VVD and Ings. Or should Maupay out be my priority?

Yeah... but don't think he will get regular starts. So I still think it's time to ship him.

    Best attacking move?
    A. Vardy to Jimenez
    B. Martial to Bergwijn/Moura
    C. Martial to Son (-4)
    D. Martial to Mahrez

    Here is my current team:

    Pope/Gazzaniga
    TAA/Dunk/Lundstram/Mings/Tarkowski
    Salah/Richarlison/Maddison/Fleck/Deulofeu
    Vardy/Firminho/Abraham

I would like to keep my WC for now. I am thinking of either doing a change on Defence (Lundstram->Egan).
Or get a City cover in (KDB/Aguero).
    What do you guys think?

    1. Johnny Drama

      I did Lundy to Egan.

Looking at your team, you must have benching headache every GW?

      1. jack the ripper

Indeed. I usually play 3 at the back but still picking defenders is a nightmare.
I am thinking of gradually sorting this out by changing a defender (try to avoid -4) .

Vardy/Firm/Abraham could all score so I do not know if bringing in Aguero (who is always a rotation danger) is the way to go.

He'll be without a game in two weeks though. If it's tight, which is unlikely, he'll probably play close to 90 mins especially if Mane is out.

most likely but it depends on the scoreline and how the game is going, if they, which they probably will, leading comfortably, they will stroll around last 20 minutes so in that case he will prob stay on. I think you have to put the armband on him with other merits in hand, do you think he is good option? Is there any better? For me, Kun is the better one IF he starts, which with Sterlings potentially injury is more likely, he needs his best player to be in match fitness, that means playing Kun (i actually think he plays Jesus too as left winger vs West ham). My thinking is also that City won´t have a game in two weeks, while Liv have Ath Madrid just 3 days later, so my bet is Kun starts and City does not need to cruise in after 60 minutes, Liv will prob do that. I was wrong last week though so you never know
