Can FPL bosses expect more attacking returns from Spurs winger Steven Bergwijn?

Steven Bergwijn (£7.5m) is off and running already in Fantasy Premier League, having scored Tottenham Hotspur’s opening goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Bergwijn’s double-digit haul on his debut has already put him on the FPL radar, with the Dutch winger the third-most-popular transfer target among Fantasy midfielders in the run-up to Gameweek 26.

The Netherlands international was signed by Spurs only last week, joining the Lilywhites from PSV Eindhoven in a reported £27m deal.

Bergwijn has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract with Jose Mourinho’s side and it was perhaps telling that his new manager threw him straight into the starting XI against Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions on Sunday.

Mourinho said of Bergwijn’s display after full-time:

It was a debut goal that was the icing on the cake of a very good performance. Independent of the goal I would say his performance was very good, very solid. Very mature.

We worked hard during the week. He came to us Tuesday so he had a complete week to work and to try as fast as possible to understand what we wanted from him.

So very solid performance against such a difficult opponent like Kyle Walker, but then he was clever enough to appear also in other zones and try to create some problems for City.

So very, very good performance. Also defensively very aware of his position, defending zonal, covering spaces. Very, very good and then, of course, the goal is a great goal. It’s so important for us.

Is Bergwijn a viable cheaper alternative to Son Heung-min (£10.0m) then or indeed an appealing midfield option in his own right?

Our Scout Report below uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, so only those who have signed up to valid packages will be able to access it in full.

The History and Statistics

Born in October 1997, Bergwijn was on the books of Ajax as a youth before switching allegiances to PSV in 2011.

The winger progressed to the club’s under-19 side before making his debut for Jong PSV (the Dutch giants’ reserve team) at the age of 16 in August 2014.

Bergwijn went on to make 31 appearances for Jong PSV in Eerste Divisie (the Dutch second tier), scoring on 14 occasions and claiming six assists.

The then-teenage attacker caught the eye of PSV head coach Philip Cocu during his spell with the reserves, intermittently appearing for the senior team in both the Eredivisie and UEFA Champions League until his breakthrough season arrived in 2016/17.

Appearing mostly as a substitute in that campaign, Bergwijn established himself as a first-team regular in 2017/18 and was directly involved in 19 of his side’s league goals.

An explosive 2018/19 saw him register 14 goals and 12 assists in 33 Eredivisie appearances, with the new Spurs signing coming up against his future employers at Wembley in a Champions League group stage match in November 2018.

Bergwijn had already plundered 15 attacking returns in 16 top-flight starts for PSV this season before his move to north London, departing Eindhoven having scored 29 goals and registered 35 assists in 112 Eredivisie games.

The full breakdown is as follows:

SeasonAppsGoalsAssists
2014/15100
2015/16500
2016/172522
2017/1832811
2018/19331412
2019/2016510

Having represented the Netherlands at every age level from under-17s upwards, Bergwijn made his debut for the national side in October 2018 and has gone on to feature for his country on nine occasions (without scoring).

Do people actually think Mane is a good FPL asset? He isn’t fit to tie Salah’s boots.. I really he wish he didn’t get injured, so many underserving sheep getting Salah’s points. Makes me sick they are benefiting from choosing an inferior option 🙁

You might well be right, but it might only be for a single game week after all and I have a front 8 where Traore is the "cheapie", so I might escape punishment. Mane is now quite a reasonable option ...... he plays for an above average team too.Admittedly the LIv DD alternatives are probably more attractive but big firing midfielders are few and far between this year.

He was a much better FPL asset than Salah over 2019 but not before that or not after that yet.

I used to love having him when he was at Southampton

Fond memories of his multiple hattricks for them, even back then it was ovbvious he was a special player

Always been more of A Salah fan for FPL since he joined pool though, and when they're the same price it's Salah every day for me

Mane's return will start eating into Salah's points again though, that's almost certain

          He was unreal

And the scary thing is - he's twice the player now, his game has has actually improved so much in every area

His creativity has deteriorated and hes become more selfish. Too interested in childish internal scoring rivalry With Salah. Its very Clear that he is bummed out that he is no longer the main man since Salah's arrival.

I think he's improved so much since Southampton - when he was already scoring league hattricks for fun

The defensive work he's manages to get through alone is superhuman, let alone the attacking contributions

His heading has also improved so much - but I'm just not a fan of having the two of them due to the captaincy lottery factor, and Salah's penalties and selfishness just give him too much of an FPL advantage in the (very) long run - especially at the same price

Well he was banging them in early season and late last, so yes. Basically he's the 3rd best midfielder in fpl, but that doesn't mean you have to like him.

Mane is a better rounded footballer than Salah, all thing's considered, but Salah's selfish streak makes him a superior FPL option for me, especially with the penalties.

Over the last 5 GWs I have lost a 90 point lead in my ML and I'm now 2nd and 20 points behind. This is due to being to sensible I think, last season I was too impulsive with my transfers so have been the extreme opposite this season of which I think has now cost me that lead as I'm being too conservative now and not "playing the game" if that makes sense?!?!

I dont think wildcard is essential.

Vardy has two tough fixtures and then a very nice run, he could easily punish sellers. Doucoure could pop up with a goal any day.

Your defence is where work is needed. Maybe do Kelly to a cheap starter like Lascelles, or if you have cash upgrade him. Boly is a bargain atm for 4.7m having just come back from injury. In a good team and scores the odd goal

Plus, as I pointed out in other posts several similar priced alternatives are scoring just as well and better than Lunstram was at the moment (bar his amazing 24 pointer or whatever it was) so why not chose the stress free options?

If you were playing WC this week which one striker from following would you bring in alongside Ings and Jiménez?

A Aguero -as captain v W Ham- after West Ham poorer fixtures and blank- and will he even start v West Ham
B Firmino- good form and fixtures but possible rotation. Salah and double defence could be better
C Aubameyang- blanks week 28 -good fixtures- less likely to rotation

Personally, I think so. They always seem to let in 1, but that might turn for them now. If they get beaten, it tends to be by only a goal which gives them a good chance of clean sheets to start with.

The other thing I like about Boly is he's somewhat of a bonus point magnet. Wolves rarely produce high-scoring games so usually the defenders do well in BPS.

There's guaranteed to be at least 3 matches isn't there (even though 2 actual matches only confirmed to date)? I think that should be good enough for a FH.

But the teams currently confirmed don’t really inspire confidence.

Liverpool going out tonight would make saving FH for a later double an easy decision for me.

I don't buy into the "crap teams = no points will be scored" assumption. It's only a single game and each fixture will either have a favourite (in which case you load up on their best players) or it looks like the game will be close (in which case you hedge and get 1 or 2 of the best players from each side).

Problem is if we only get four, or six teams playing, everyone will have the same FH anyway.

Whereas FH with lots of teams involved in the doubles later in the season could be more of a differential

But are you looking for a differential or points? If your differential is only likely to gain you - say - 20 points, that's no good if the "standard method" is likely to gain you - say - 40 points. Regardless, the problem is at the moment we are all pretty blind as we don't know how the blanks or DGWs are going to fall, so the best we can do at the moment is keep our options open.

I do plan to keep them yeah, plus I want to avoid deducting points. I do still have my Wildcard, TC and Bench-Boost to play too so I'm tempted to try the Free Hit out.

GW31 which is likely to be a mega blank or GW34 which is likely to be a big double GW. Those are couple of options that majority are considering.

However bad 28 looks now, it's nothing compared to 31

Well in gw31 there is a good chance all those 6 players will blank, plus many others

We have had plenty of notice as to which teams blank in gw28 ... other weeks are going to be far harder to deal with

Martial to Bernardo? Looks like a sure thing with Sterling out for the entire February (Pep said he might miss the Real game which is scheduled 26. Feb)

Is GW37 the best week to WC? My plan is to make a full XI of DGW players as well as players with a good GW38 fixture to round out the season.

Considering nothing else then it is the best on paper, but you have to think about the downside.

Should work well for getting points for two weeks. What about all the points you will lose having an interior team for the next 11 gameweeks. Wildcards are best played asap. Presuming your predictions are on point of course

gw37 is going be a dgw .... I expect to use BB or TC, so definitely not going to be WC
