What impact will Berge have on Lundstram and Sheff Utd’s defence?

The arrival of Sander Berge (£5.0m) at Sheffield United has led to further fears for John Lundstram (£5.1m) owners.

Chris Wilder threw the Norwegian defensive midfielder straight into the Blades’ first-team in Gameweek 25 in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Berge played 68 minutes before being replaced by Lundstram, who has already lost his place to Muhamed Bešić (£4.4m) in Gameweek 24.

With competition for midfield places heating up at Bramall Lane, we’ve researched what Berge will bring to the Premier League.

And while this article acts as a Scout Report on the Blades’ latest recruit, we will also be using it to work out the effect his arrival will have on Lundstram.

The History and Statistics

Berge arrives at Sheffield United as something of a major coup for the newly-promoted club.

The Norwegian midfielder was linked with many of the Premier League’s top clubs during the January transfer window, including Manchester United, while Liverpool and Napoli, who faced him in this season’s Champions League group stages, were also rumoured to be interested in his services.

Not surprisingly, Wilder had to smash the club’s transfer record to bring Berge to Bramall Lane.

Still only 21 years of age, the midfielder has risen to the top end of European football very quickly.

Berge graduated from local side Asker’s academy in 2013 and made his senior debut in the third tier of Norwegian football aged just 15.

Eliteserien outfit Vålerenga signed him for the 2015 campaign, where he made 36 first-team appearances before earning a big move to Belgian club Genk in 2017 – still just 18-years-old.

Despite his tender age, Berge soon a reputation for controlling the midfield with his discipline, ability to read the game and his physical attributes.

His primary role at Genk was to drop deep to win the ball and distribute it quickly to the more creative players around him, helping his team-mates construct effective counter-attacks.

During three years in Belgium, Berge featured heavily, making 73 league appearances, helping Genk to the domestic title and Super Cup in 2018/19 as well as competing in three separate European competitions.

After two Europa League campaigns, Berge and his Genk team-mates took part in this season’s Champions League, alongside Liverpool, Napoli and Red Bull Salzburg.

Furthermore, Berge has also competed at every age group for the Norwegian international team, right from Under-15s to the senior side, who he debuted for in 2017 and now has 20 caps and one goal.

Securing a player with experience of the very top level in European football, as well as winning titles, especially at such a young age, can only improve a club like Sheffield United, who were competing in League One as recently as 2017.

Furthermore, it should push the Blades onto new heights, as they continue to press home on their chances of qualifying for European football for the first time in their history this season.

“Sander is someone we have known about for quite a while now. We have tracked him over a sustained period of time, he was a player we highlighted as someone who could come in and really improve us and we are thrilled he’s agreed to come here. When we sat down with Sander it was clear that he was really excited about coming here and that was great to see. I think this signing just shows how far we have come in a short space of time, that we are now attracting the likes of Sander to the football club. It’s a brilliant signing for us.” – Chris Wilder

“To win and go fifth in my first game is fantastic. But we cannot stop there. We must push forward. The song is all about playing in Europe next season. That is the ambition.” – Sander Berge

While his mental and physical attributes, as well his ability to dictate play from deep, may improve Sheffield United moving forward, as a defensive midfielder, Berge has never been particularly renowned for goals, netting just six times in three years at Genk. Before that, the youngster never once scored a senior league goal in Norwegian football.

Here's my problem with the luck v skill debate. It's clearly a skill to be a consistent top10k finisher right? But anyone who is around that rank now (and a fair bit below) is gonna find green or grey arrows a lot easier if they captain Salah for the foreseeable. Doing this for 9 of the next 10 gameweeks is hardly skilful is it, much more respect for those trying to dind someone who can beat Mo but of course they run a much bigger risk of falling down the ranks

You could argue it takes skill to resist the urge to constantly try and find a differential. You can set and forget Salah as captain and find points elsewhere in your other players? I've punted on Barnes over Maddi. In the past four game weeks that's a 20 point swing alone, and I've had an extra 1.7M to spend elsewhere (allowed me to have Robbo and Trent).

Maybe they were skillfull to be in the position they were in at the start of the season?

Some people triple captained Mane, which was logical, but it was unlucky. I don't find you get lucky in FF. I find you get unlucky.

Captaining Salah when he has a see of green fixtures is hardly skillful.

The skill is consisting getting a player of the supporting cast before they go on a run of form, or dumping a player before they hit a rough patch

It's a shame Salah got injured because a true test of skill would have been who chose him over Man, as the stats he was posting was likely to make the stubborn Mané (over Salah) owners lose points. The switch to Salah is now easy and obvious for many,

That said, there is still going to be a test of patience for those who hold Mané, either losing points in the short term or using a sideways transfer.

There's a skill in the analysis and coming to a sensible decision. But ultimately it's all luck as past information doesn't fully correlate with the future outcome. On average, skilled players will do better of course.

Captaining Salah is the easy choice but could also be the skilled choice. When the analysis and the casual pick comes to the same conclusion the skill factor is largely irrelevant. Don't overthink and captain random players when Salah is in form.

Also, the clear flaw in the OP argument is that, yes the top 10k will probably be able to finish there if they cap Salah for the rest of the season, but they have earned the right to do that by making the good decisions to get in the top 10k in the first place. It's all about protecting a hard-earned rank.

We could all cap Salah for the rest of the season if we wanted, but if you haven't made the right calls up until now then you won't get as much benefit from it as those who have.

I'm not top-10k by the way

some are missing my point. Im not saying it isn't skilful to get 10k im saying once there the 'skill' of staying there is boring and I prefer to push on even though know it means more likely to miss out on top 10k

If Liverpool are playing in GW31 I'll probably play with 9/10 players and not free hit as they'll make up most of the points as usual. If Liverpool lose then it's almost certainly free hit time.

      Sorry - repost.
      Gameweek 34:
Just been reading Ben Crelin's brilliant twitter page on blank and double gameweeks ahead. He says though that in GW34 the FA Cup Semis are followed by a free midweek in which postponed fixtures will slot in to. Does this mean that if any Premiership team is in the semis they will play their GW 34 match in the midweek after the Cup game? Why is this regarded as a possibly blank gameweek then? Sorry if the answer is obvious but I'm genuinely puzzled. Could it even therefore be a double gameweek or is the only DGW in 37?

        Blank GW28 (EFL Cup Final)
        Blank GW31 (FA Cup QFs)
Blank and Double GW34 (FA Cup SFs)
        Double GW37
There'll be another DGW if a team gets 3 postponements

Don't think Cup SF games automatically played a few days later - depends on other stuff too.

Pep could easily play Kun Jesus Bilva front 3.
Have also seen KDB play further ahead before.
Not really sure if this makes Mahrez more secure to start.

True. Trying to second guess Pep is a nightmare. But based on sheer numbers, everyone else's case for starting has just been strengthened due to Sterling's injury.

      Guys, let's talk about Tanganga.

4.0, Spurs have good fixtures, Mou Mou seems like he's tightening things up at the back finally, Danny Rose is gone so he should be a regular starter. What's not to like?

          Button Kelly Simpson Lundstram
The winner of a big mini-league I’m in played his around this stage last year. I played mine around 33/34. Just don’t know if it’s worthwhile holding onto it for too long.

      Any ideas?

      First 11:
      McCarthy
      TAA, Aurier, Sidibe
Salah, Son, Mahrez, De Bruyne, Trossard
      DCL, Firmino

      Bench:
      Martin, Lundstram, Lascelles, Greenwood

After a maverick wildcard and Trossard captain decision in GW23 that worked out (thank you Pranil for encouraging risks in Meet the Manager), I've been captaining Salah for consistent green arrows, but this gameweek I'm feeling that a possible rotation will hurt Liverpool assets.
My two questions are: Do I go Son or Mahrez for the captaincy? And do I start switching my bench options with my transfers to get lined up for a Bench Boost or do I just play for the short term fixtures? For example, switching Everton assets for Ings/Rico or waiting it out to upgrade Greenwood/Martin/Lundstram(?) with the imminent Mahrez downgrade funds?
No money in the bank, got Lundstram at 4.0 GW1, single free transfer.
Thank you all, hope you have a good gameweek 😀

My gut says Son too, and I like how he's still a big differential. I'm just mildly worried that if the game gets too easy for spurs, he might get benched early for the CL game midweek.
This is a tough-easy gameweek. Thanks for the input!
