Why I’m considering Mee as my John Lundstram replacement

Even though things have gone well for my Fantasy Premier League team recently, I still have some issues to solve over the Winter Break.

One of them involves John Lundstram (£5.1m), while I’m still on the look-out for a Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) replacement.

I somehow navigated Double Gameweek 24 with a small green arrow, thanks to captain Mohamed Salah (£12.7m).

I followed that up by once again securing another small green arrow over the weekend due in large part to captaining him again.

Salah has found form just at the right time and such has been his influence that he’s scored 60 of my team’s last 123 points (49%).

In some ways, it shows that I’ve been very lucky with my armband picks of late but it’s also indicative of him papering over the cracks in my team.

Of course, it would have been a different story altogether had I captained Sadio Mané (£12.3m) during the fateful Double Gameweek, but I still feel that I’ve not made enough traction. I’ve had a rank rise of 120,000 places since then.

However, some of my transfers have effectively been wasted, such as the signing of Brandon Williams (£4.1m) when other former stalwarts in my team are no longer starting games, as in the case of Lundstram.

With that said, the Winter Break has come just at the right time to allow me to contemplate and reflect on my next moves.

 Lundstram Replacement

Lundstram benched again as Fantasy owners consider selling the 'Lord'

I was fortunate enough to benefit from four of Lundstram’s double-digit hauls between Gameweek 2 to Gameweek 17. It almost seemed too good to be true that a player listed as a defender (playing as a midfielder) and with a starting price of £4.0m could score so many points.

It was, quite literally, the stuff of fantasy.

But, dare I say it, as with most good things they must come to an end and it looks like he could already be past his best before date.

Since Gameweek 18 Lundstram has scored a paltry 13 points which no longer meets my expectations even if he initially over-delivered.

Sheffield United’s Blank Gameweek 28 is further confirmation of him outstaying his welcome and, of course, there is serious competition for places in their midfield right now

Put simply, there are cheaper options out on the market that make more sense and maybe it’s time for me to cash in on the profit I’ve made from Lundstram.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) is currently just £0.1m cheaper than the Sheffield United man and has quietly scored 20 points in the last three Gameweeks when facing the likes of Leicester, Man United and Arsenal. That’s no mean feat.

He has also played every minute of Premier League football for Burnley since August, won’t have a blank in Gameweek 28 and has three reasonable upcoming fixtures (Southampton – away, Bournemouth – home and Newcastle United – away).

Mee probably won’t score another 20 points in these games, but I wouldn’t put it past him to potentially keep two clean sheets.

If you’re looking for longer-term options beyond Gameweek 26, Newcastle United’s defenders are also worth adding to the shortlist.

The Magpies have kept two clean sheets in the last three matches and after a visit to the Emirates Stadium in Gameweek 26, they will avoid all of last season’s top six until Gameweek 34.

In my view, that makes club captain Jamaal Lascelles (£4.2m) almost too hard to ignore.

In both cases, Mee and Lascelles’ ownership levels show that they are both differentials.

Future planning

Vardy cleared for EFL Cup semi-final action ahead of Gameweek 25

My previous Pro Pundits article saw me effectively bidding farewell to Vardy – I only wish I followed up on that.

Even though I was happy to replace him with Roberto Firmino (£9.6m), I decided to give Vardy one more chance against Chelsea, which backfired as he blanked once again, whereas the Brazilian registered 11 points.

I’m now tempted to sell Vardy and get Danny Ings (£7.0m) with Southampton’s generous run of upcoming games.

In addition, my bench is extremely light at the moment with Mason Greenwood (£4.4m) and his colleague Williams not giving me enough room to manoeuvre if my starting players get randomly rested.

I’m not inclined to Wildcard at this stage but could consider a hit if I can justify it.

However, one thing is for certain, I can’t see myself captaining anyone other than Salah against a hapless Norwich City team that have conceded far too many goals since August.

    Better option this week?
    A. VVD and Martial
    B. Gomez/Stevens/Stephens and Mahrez (-4)

Maybe C, just, and sort those defenders later. Mahrez could go wild against West Ham.

Barnes might be worth a punt. He's been in great form while Leicester as a whole haven't been great. I don't think you need to wildcard, team looks decent!

I don’t understand this Winter Break nonsense. It is two weeks and every single team has a game, and many of them are right on the middle of the ‘break’. Give them all a full fortnight off (for player recovery and a needed rest to help our upcoming Europe campaign teams) or let’s not call it a break!

    Schmeichel Button
    TAA Lundy Williams Rico Kelly

    GW26 - Lundy, Kelly & Martial to VVD, Egan & JWP (-4)

    GW27 - Kun & Deeney to Jimenez & Ings (-4)

    GW28 - Dendo to midfielder upto 7.9

Gives me this team for GW28

Posted this on the last article so I'll try again.

Anyone considering Saiss (4.4 Wol) as Lundstram replacement? Seems like he's nailed, anyone know enough about Wolves to know for sure?

Could do with 0.1 saving to swap Simpson (3.9 Bou) to Tanganga (4.0 Spurs).

Any other def 4.4 or below I should consider? I already have Lascelles and Williams.

Yeah, was considering Stephens too. It's just I have McCarthy in nets so it would be double Southampton defence. Could be worth it though.

Thanks all for the advice, plenty to consider. I also liked Saiss as a bit of a differential and he looks a threat at corners. He put a couple of headers not far wide during the United game anyway.

Sterling is most likely out which kind og gets one player out of the way and means someone has to fill that spot, my guess is that will be Jesus, which means Kun in all likelyhood will start. One of the Silva´s will play in mifield and the other will be benched, with mahrez right. Gundo or Rodri cm. Very few games for City now, so to me that says Pep will play his most important players to remain matchfitness. I would prolly sell before Leicester, but not sure.

Some have doubts over Fernandez's gametime since all CBs are now fit and since Lascellas is the captain, they expect him to be more nailed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Pro Pundit initiative was supposed to have the effect of 'guiding' or 'informing' the wider community, maybe even 'leading' by providing insights to buck the trend or spot hidden gems.

I'm going to applaud the Mee pick because it's not a name that's been considered by most. Many are on Charlie Taylor for the price, many are happy with just Pope, a few have Tarkowski instead, not seen anyone consider Mee. It's not necessarily going to pay off, but it might, in which case well done and thank you to the author of this article.

However I almost stopped reading when, second sentence into an article for GW26, there was a reference to finding a replacement for Jamie Vardy. Like seriously, the time to get rid of Vardy has passed, a long long time ago. In hindsight, GW19 was the time to do it, but for those with the foresight GW22 proved a successful time to jump, and even the common folk among us realised to jump ship after GW24.

The problem with this is that Vardy is back and Vardy is fit, but most importantly Vardy is a captaincy contender for GW28 and has a string of nice fixtures after 2 tough ones. I'm looking to bring him back very soon, and I'm aware many others are too, and yet the Pro Pundit is only now selling? Well good for you, if it means anything I think it's the right decision to do Vardy to Ings. It's just not helpful to anyone really, and makes me question the point of dedicating a section of the article to it.

Have mentioned before and will say again I have nothing against any of the Pro Pundits and think that their articles can sometimes be quite useful. Just want to provide some honest feedback, specifically that you can play the game any way you like but if you're going to be writing about your decisions to a wider audience maybe consider what reactions your moves, thoughts and strategies will receive from the reader. Thanks for reading.

Congrats on a solid 2 weeks. 32/115 for me. The optimist in me sees that as a healthy team which has scored only 8 points fewer than a Pro Pundit despite captaining Mane and Aubameyang (yes yes)

          huh?

I want Liverpool to win CHl and therefore going out of cup is fine by me, as it just adds games and postponement which makes fixturelist extremely tight near end of season. Rather want them to play in 31 to ensure they not tuck that game inside a heavy schedule when we fight for CHL title. Which we are favourites

    WHAT ARE WE SAYING?!!!!!

hardly the most exciting moves but i have a lot of money tied up in Lundstram (since gw1) and Ryan in goal so feel i need to get some of the Chef's clean sheets. Saints also looking much better and offsets a blanker in GW28 with Williams likely losing his place
