What impact has new formation had on Targett and Villa’s defence?

Aston Villa’s recent formation change has had an impact on budget left-back Matt Targett (£4.4m).

As Villa continue to battle relegation from the Premier League, manager Dean Smith has adopted a 3-4-3 formation over the last few weeks.

He debuted the new system in the Gameweek 21 trip to Burnley, which produced a 2-1 win, and has used it ever since.

It has mostly featured Kortney Hause (£4.4m), Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) and Ezri Konsa (£4.3m) in the back-three, Targett has started the last three as the left wing-back since returning from an injury, while Frédéric Guilbert (£4.4m) has been the favourite on the right-hand side.

During this five-match period, Villa have won twice, drawn once and lost on two occasions. Those seven points have gone some way to helping Villa beat the drop, although there is still a long way to go.

Either way, it looks as if the 3-4-3 system is here to stay and, thankfully, it seems as if it may have unlocked the potential of Targett.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up to a valid package can access it in full.

What has happened to Targett’s position?

Probably sensible. I am always tempted to change defenders to a defender from another team (lascelles, targett, taylor etc) but realistically O'Connell is probably the best pick of those

Ha, yes I actually neglected to get Dubravka last week, for some reason I am just allergic to Newcastle assets.. just realised I can actually afford Stevens so that makes it marginally more exciting

Depends on how the FA R5 goes.

For me, if Liverpool are playing in 31 I will save FH for a DGW later, but if not, I might be forced to FH31.

As you still have TC, I'd say you should hope for FH31.

TC, and BB in the DGWs in 34/37 or whenever they fall....and WC either when you need to, or the GW before using BB.

Think Tony will do ok: decent rest; Ighalo at CF allowing him to play left wing; UTD do well against teams that actually attack them; Chelsea pretty leaky...

Think Martial is worth one more as Chelsea away could be better for attacking returns than Burnley and Wolves who both predictably sat very deep - that won’t be Chelsea.

Looking to turn him into a budget/mid priced forward in 27 probably

I’m leading one of my mini-leagues but I’m 100 behind in the main one I play. We have similar teams, although he has Jimi and Kun so thinking of playing WC either this week or next to bring in Son, Jimi, Firminho and sorting out defence to get rid of Soy, Kelly, Lundy and Holgate (poor fixtures) and also getting rid of Fleck due to the blank in GW28.

Bertrand was pretty close to an assist last game and playing very high up the pitch on the left, personally I think he’s worth a punt..

I would prefer Stevens but it means playing Choudhry or taking a -4 in 28!

Planning to do DCL + Grealish >> Traore + Jimmy over the next two gw's which would leave me with this and 0.7m itb. How would you improve this team?

    Ryan
Taa • Robbo • Aurier -- Lundy Rico
    Salah • Traore • KDB • Martial
    Vardy • Jimmy • Ings

Looks fine? ideally would love to convert martial > son but not sure how...could perhaps convert him instead to maddison in gw28.

    Any other improvements?

Would leave stale fart Lord Lund - if you can afford to do him to a decent non-blanking def (Burnley?) as a stale fart could keep Greal a bit longer.

Hello all, back again. Stuck on what to do with 1FT, 0.8 ITB (not currently on WC)
Very tempted to swap Mane for double defence. Vardy and Martial also on thin, thin ice, DCL possibly needs to go soon, and defence is less than ideal. Wwyd?

    McCarthy (Martin)
    TAA Lundstram Rico (Lascelles Kelly)
    Salah Mane* KDB Martial (Hayden)
    Vardy Ings DCL

Vardy and Tony worth keeping for now - both do fine this GW I reckon. DCL ok this week too.

Think I read elsewhere in a match report that Moura was CF first half and Son switched there 2nd half last week. Is that correct?

Will be tempted by Spurs for sure if they lose tonight. Son is top of the list but Moura could be handy - there isn’t exactly much competition for mid priced mids.

I think it was very fluid front 3.
Like Bergwijn started on the left but was getting into central positions.

Although I would expect Son to be the striker if Bergwijn is nailed on the left wing.
