Lundstram goal adds to remaining owners’ dilemma after another benching

Sheffield United 2-1 Bournemouth

  • Goals: Billy Sharp (£5.6m), John Lundstram (£5.0m)| Callum Wilson (£7.4m)
  • Assists: John Egan (£4.6m), Lys Mousset (£4.6m)| Harry Wilson (£5.8m)
  • Bonus: Sharp x3, C. Wilson x2, Egan x1

Having suffered more transfers out ahead of Gameweek 26 than at any other stage of the season, John Lundstram (£5.0m) almost inevitably popped up with a goal in Sunday’s clash between Sheffield United and Bournemouth.

The decision to sell Lundstram looked – and may still turn out to be – a sage move when the teamsheets were released on Sunday lunchtime, with the budget Fantasy Premier League defender benched for the third league match in a row.

Lundstram duly emerged as a second-half substitute to grab his side’s late winner, finishing neatly after being teed up by fellow replacement Lys Mousset (£4.6m).

His goal will leave many of his remaining owners pretty much where they were ahead of this weekend, in a sell-or-keep dilemma.

On the one hand, Lundstram’s chances of starting in Gameweek 27 and beyond look as uncertain as ever. Does one match-winning goal suddenly catapult him back into Chris Wilder’s plans and ahead of club-record signing Sander Berge (£5.0m) in the central midfield pecking order?

Lundstram had looked almost too eager to impress before his goal, taking a succession of heavy touches and producing an air-kick from close range not long after his introduction.

Then again, Berge, perhaps still getting to grips with the tempo of the Premier League, didn’t particularly excel in his stead and played an errant pass in the lead-up to Bournemouth’s opener.

Team value might be one understandable reservation owners have about selling given Lundstram’s million-pound rise since August but sentimentality is possibly another, given the remarkable narrative of his debut FPL campaign.

The romanticists might be tempted to give him “just one more game” against Brighton in a fortnight’s time (how many of us said the same ahead of Gameweek 26?) but the pragmatists who haven’t already sold him might be tempted to part ways, as the week-to-week uncertainty isn’t ideal.

Wilder wasn’t giving any clues away in his post-match interview, saying:

We took John [Lundstram] out, he needed a breather. He’s had a fabulous first part of the season but we recruited well in January. They’ve all got to go again and try and get back in the team.

John can’t do anything more than what he has done over the last two games. He has a decision to make: does he feel sorry for himself or does he got out and contribute for the team? And he did that for us.

The Sheffield United boss added in his press conference:

He’s played a huge part in us gaining us six valuable points [in Gameweeks 25 and 26]. It’s not always that you start, it’s a group. I’ve got some other players that are really knocking on the door and desperate to get involved but that’s the difficult job that I have.

We try to pick the right team and pick the right bench. You always want a really good positive attitude from those boys that maybe aren’t playing and certainly, Mousset and John have shown that, as have all the other boys.

Those who ditched Lundstram for another Sheffield United defender were largely left empty-handed, with the Blades losing their clean sheet as early as the 12th minute.

John Egan (£4.6m) did grab a rebound assist for the hosts’ equaliser, though, with Billy Sharp (£5.6m) following up the centre-half’s blocked header on the stroke of half-time.

Enda Stevens (£5.1m) underscored his own creativity without getting any reward, firstly crossing for Sharp to fire into the side-netting in the 15th minute and then “assisting the assister” for the Blades’ first goal.

Overlapping centre-half Chris Basham (£4.5m) was also involved at the business end of the pitch, creating Lundstram’s first chance that the match-winner fluffed.

It was, quite simply, just one of those days where what was probably the right move conspired to work against Lundstram’s sellers.

The positive thing about Sheffield United’s three centre-halves and two wing-backs is that they are pretty much safe bets for now, with Wilder saying after full-time:

It’s going to have to be a good player to get Basham out of the team, George Baldock, Enda Stevens. Those boys have looked and seen players have been brought in and gone, “here we go, I need to go to the next level”. They’ve gone to the next level in terms of stepping into the Premier League and now they need to go to the next level to keep producing performances to stay in the team.

Security of starts is not something that any of Sheffield United’s forwards can really offer us, with five players competing for two striking spots.

Sharp was handed his third start in a row, though, and rewarded his manager’s faith with a second goal of the campaign.

Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) has started in the last five Gameweeks, meanwhile, but David McGoldrick (£5.4m) was back on the bench after a month-long absence and new signing Richairo Zivkovic (£5.0m) is another name to throw into the mix along with Mousset.

While the Sheffield United love-in continues, the hipster’s choice of yesteryear, Bournemouth, have long since lost their Fantasy appeal.

There have been positive signs in the last three Gameweeks, at least, with the Cherries having recorded back-to-back league wins before Sunday’s match.

The visitors were good value for their lead, too, with Harry Wilson (£5.8m) and Callum Wilson (£7.4m) wasting two early chances before combining for the deadlock-breaking goal: the on-loan Liverpool winger seeing his shot blocked, with his teammate scoring on the rebound.

Ryan Fraser (£6.9m) merits a mention, despite leaving South Yorkshire with nothing but appearance points to his name.

The Scotland international, who was critical of his own early-season form when interviewed last month, looked more like his own self at Bramall Lane and was heavily involved in much of what Bournemouth did.

Fraser had teed Harry Wilson up for his early headed chance and then “assisted the assister” for his side’s goal, later seeing Philip Billing (£5.0m) fluff two of his teasing crosses from the left flank.

The diminutive winger’s radar wasn’t always perfectly aligned and he himself wasted a couple of promising positions but there was almost a second goal of the season for him in the 70th minute, with Dean Henderson (£5.1m) parrying away Fraser’s well-hit effort from 12 yards.

Fantasy managers will need much more convincing before they are to be sure that Bournemouth assets are worthy of consideration again, however, and the Season Ticker makes for pretty grim reading, with all of the top nine bar Sheffield United to come between now and Gameweek 38.

Reflecting on the game, Howe said:

Generally, I thought the performance overall was very good. The two goals we conceded were out of keeping really with the overall performance. The first time they had real genuine pressure in the game, we conceded.

The way we started the game, you wouldn’t know we were in the position we are in. We passed the ball really well, showed good composure coming to a very tough place to play. We scored a really good goal, could have scored more. The early signs of the game were very good.

Genuinely I thought our defensive performance was pretty good. But if you look at the two goals, we’ve made a lot of mistakes to the build-up to those goals. The second goal I thought was a really poor one.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Henderson; Basham, Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Berge (Lundstram 61′), Norwood, Fleck, Stevens; McBurnie, Sharp (Mousset 74′).

Bournemouth XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; Smith, Francis, Ake, Rico; Gosling, Billing, Surman (Solanke 88′); H Wilson (King 72′), C Wilson, Fraser (Stanislas 84′).

What does postponement mean for your FPL team?

Never mind fixture congestion for Pep Guardiola and David Moyes, what does yesterday mean for you and your FPL team?
With West Ham struggling, Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne were both among the top three captains selected for the coming round of games, with Mohamed Salah the most-selected ahead of Liverpool's meeting with Norwich next weekend.
But Sunday's announcement means both will score a blank, with it now very unlikely the fixture will be held inside GW26.
After Sunday's postponed match, both West Ham and Manchester City are due to go on a winter break until Gameweek 27 - beginning on February 22 - and rules spelt out by the Premier League last year mean the game cannot be held during that period.

As far as Fantasy Premier League is concerned, the rules state that players who don't play will be automatically substituted out if a benched player features. Double points will be given to the vice captain if the skipper does not play, or if neither features, no player will score double points for your team in that Gameweek.

In the event that a player does not have a fixture in any given Gameweek, the rules state: "Any players you have from that team will score 0 for that Gameweek. Players will play twice in a future Gameweek, when the match is rescheduled.

"Points are only awarded to teams who have players selected in their team in the Gameweek the fixture is actually played, irrespective of if you had them selected for the original fixture."

its carnage for my team as a Kun (c), Jesus and KDB owner. I targeted this fixture with Jesus coming into my team (admittedly with the intention to WC) but just seems a bit of a WC waste and harder to navigate the blanks and doubles if there is another one added in

That's bad luck for this week. If it's played in 29 you could gain the advantage by keeping mancity players and play free hit in 28.

Those of us who already have a City player, can bench him for the GW28 blank, then use 2FT's to get a total of three City for GW29.

It means I'll get away with going without KDB and Aguero for another week at least!

Joy of wildcarding is I have a full bench to cope with no mahrez as well.

Although McNeil at first sub with Stephens in defence isn't great 😉

What are Lundstram owners looking to do now?

Third benching in a row, has certainly lost his place....or has he?

Did well against Palace in GW25 and has now come on to win them the game against Bournemouth.

Is it a case of too much rotation threat now so you have to get rid? Or just hold on and hope?

Other issue is if you play him he'll almost certainly come on for what will most of the time be a 1 pointer.

Maybe if you got for £4.0m it's still fine to keep for now and just use as bench fodder.

I had to do it, I don't think there was a good reason to keep.

I'd paid £5.0m, was on wildcard and wanted to target those fixtures. No clean sheet was a bit frustrating but an assist and bonus point for Egan was very welcome!

Fair enough if you bought that high, even more reason to have sold. I think he be used as a sub unless they’ve injuries now. I bought at 4.0. I transferred out for Egan too so it wasn’t much of a points loss. I did regret however losing him instead of B Williams whom I realised I had 0.5 so could have sold instead. Would have put Lundy first on bench too, with KBD subbing out. A bit frustrating, so many will have him coming off the bench. Half a million I am told.

To have a cover for cs. Lund will be in for any potential attacking returns. Which means i expect him to be rotated but he should play between 30-60 min which is enough for some attacking returns

All the other Sheffield defenders are a lottery to me. Yesterday i thought O Connel was quite good then Egan gets some lucky assist. Just pick one you fancy and your wallet can handle best.

No reason to sell for me given that I got him for 4.0 - can afford to keep him as fodder and see if he gets his place back.

Whether I start him or not depends on what upside I see from my other defenders. It's basically Lundstram, Rico and Charlie Taylor for the last defensive spot. Rico will be pretty much rooted to the end of my bench given how bad Bournemouth are, so it depends on how likely I think a Burnley clean sheet is.

What I meant was there's no reason to sell a 4.0 bench fodder for now - given the price I paid for him I can afford to wait and see whether Sander Berge is bad enough to lose his spot.

Dosen’t really matter what you bought him for as you’re now paying 4.5 to have him in your team

              4 years, 1 month ago

I paid 4.0 for what I imagined would be perpetual third on the bench fodder. Rises and falls in between are irrelevant (and indeed his performance has largely been a welcome surprise of course), my expense was 4.0 so for that price I don't mind a 30-60 min type of player last on my bench.

But you won't realise that profit until you sell him, and there are plenty of better nailed options now for 4.5 and under. He is taking up 4.5m in your team. Doesn't really matter now what you paid for him.

I don't want profit - I want a 4.0 bench fodder. If that bench fodder has a chance of playing and scoring too, so much the better.

but at the moment, he's 4.5 bench fodder to you. not 4.0.

I'm with the guys, what you paid back then, only matters back then in terms of cost.

Again, I don't care about selling - it's quite simple: I'm not into the economics of rises, falls and profits, I'm into buying a player that cost 4.0 and keeping him in my team. His selling price is irrelevant because I don't plan to sell. I find the whole 'dynamic market' thing of the prices uninteresting at best, and at worst overcomplicating what should be a simple game - the only thing I look at is whether a player is worth the money I paid.

You could argue that this leads to a low/average team value and you'd be right, but not worrying about rises/falls is how I enjoy the game the most.

I think i'm more likely to NOT FH in gw31 after that postponement as I think we could end up with a triple gw for City. I'll probably just target 3-4 players most likely to haul and go in with 8 players or something that week. Try and save transfers and do 3 for a -4 towards the doubles a few times. Have BB and FH only. I'm even more likely to do this if Liverpool play 31 (which i reckon they will).

Apart from Liverpool currently, there are no defensive bankers.

      I've had him all season.
yesterday an unexpected bonus as I would have moved him but for other issues.
I'm not entirely convinced by a "like for like" swap with Egan (let's be honest his owners were just as lucky as Lundy ones yesterday) or O'Connoll and certainly don't see Stevens or Baldock as worth the extra money.
There are a few similar priced defenders that are decent options.
But unless I can find a spare FT he'll probably have to stay until the WC even if it costs another .1m drop.

Boly is a good option especially going forward.
Soy has good fixtures after the Man City game so i'd keep.

Always better than having 2 🙂
              Don't have to do Bóly.
Benching a 4.2m lascelles hardly disastrous. Better to have the option of a 4.2m lascelles over a 4m hanley
Benching headaches are when you're choosing between more expensive players 5-6m mids or forwards.
Any returns from cheap defenders are always a bonus.

I think his goal threat is a bit exaggerated - this was his first goal in 15 gameweeks and only the third game in which he's scored a goal - but I have no problem keeping him. As said above, for 4.0 I don't mind burying him on my bench and seeing if he gets his place back, especially given Berge's shaky start.

Keeping. I start him every game regardless of his current starting status. If you got him cheap - which we all did - then keep hold as long as you have four active starting defenders. Lund will always be in with a shout of scoring and is most likely to return the starting eleven sooner rather than later.

If there was no winter break, the chance would be a lot higher. City made plans to go on a break after West Ham yesterday and return to training on Monday17th Feb. That's enough training days before their next Match on Saturday. It's very very unlikely to be played before Leicester match.

Surely they can train Monday and Tuesday before playing on Wednesday 19th.

you lost 18 points there (DCL(11) + Lund(7)) plus the four points for the hit taken. Egan scores 6 so you need (22-6) = 16 points from Jimenez to break even this GW. But long term I think you will make those points up anyway

    WC- Yes or No?
A good few here are dodgy atm and quite short for GW 28. Maybe a big restructure is needed.
    If not WC'ing I think
GW 27- Holgate (poor fixtures and allows Boly) + Lundy -> Boly + Taylor.
    GW 28 -4 to cover Leicester. Grealish + Auba -> Barnes/ Vardy.
No keeper then though for 28 and just fingers crossed Maupay gets back in favour.

    Hendo.
    TAA, Stephens, Williams.
    Grealish, KDB, Mane, Salah.
    Maupay, Ings, Aubameyang.
    Stek, Lundstram, Dendoncker, Holgate.
2ft. 0.1m ITB. WC, BB, FH remaining chips. 15k overall.

Think UEFA would not be happy and insist gw29/30 is used instead, giving them longer notice
Plus it's still in the middle of City's winter break

I don't know if the EFL are planning on bringing the game into disrepute (forcing two teams not to have a winter break) and whether they are prepared to humiliate themselves with UEFA, and look like a bunch of useless amateurs in the process

It can happen. They try to avoid it but it might not be avoidable. City already have another game to reschedule and could have two more if they reach the FA Cup semis. I don't know where they're going to put all these games if they don't play the West Ham one soon.

This. Players will be back from holidays on the weekend so there wasnt a chance that game will be played Saturday/Sunday.

There is still a posibility that game will be on 19th Feb (so it would be still GW26) and its because City have really busy callendar.
They can play 19th (next Wednesday) or play 3 games in 1 week later.

Both clubs have rejected playing during the break. The players have scheduled vacations, private islands, and yachts.

Even WHU probably only has U-20 still in the UK.

Aguero and Mahrez are getting burned. I assume everybody has KDB. There probably many kids with Haller, Ederson, Sterling, and Snodgrass that will also be burned.

Already have 3 Pool and can get 3 Wolves (one early to cover 28), plus couple Burnley

Even if they are in FA Cup, I won't bother

        fair point

Possible only 2/3 games on. Everton have a chance of playing but going to be such a low scoring week

Same thinking here. Think they will field a stronger lineup vs. Chelsea though.

No way will I waste my FH on Burnley & Bournemouth players.
Going in to GW31 I'll possibly already have 3 Wolves players and 1 Burnley player, I'll add another from either Norwich or Everton. I'll be more then content with that tbh

If you are planning on playing only 5, it means a min 12 points wasted even with no returns which isn’t too bad for a FH chip anyway. And that’s assuming the worst case scenario.

I played FH last season on same BGW. Scored about 30 points. At least made a profit. Depends on your team, tactics.

What's your thoughts? I have multiple problems with my team. Which one should I tackle first? Only have 1 FT and 4.9 mill in the bank.

    1) Lundstram (For a SHU/Southampton defender?)
    2) No cover goalkeeper for GW28 etc. (Get McCarthy?)
    3) Pukki (no clue who could replace him at the mo)
    4) Maddison (upgrade to Son?)

    Team at the moment:
    Henderson Button
    TAA VVD Lundstram Rico Soyuncu
    Salah KDB Maddison Grealish Dendoncker
    Jimenez Ings Pukki

Happy for Conte doing well at Inter. Chelsea 1 of a kind with ridding of managers

Been trotting along planning future transfers leading into GW28, WC/FH timing etc then it has just shuddered to a halt with this spread GW. It's quite disconcerting.
Knew it was coming but what a weird scenario.
Almost guaranteed someone is going to pick up a knock in training next week and people not going to be able to do anything about it.
