Making the most of Gameweek 26’s FPL limbo

Limbo: “an uncertain period of awaiting a decision or resolution; an intermediate state or condition”.

It truly does feel like the FPL community has slipped into oblivion this week. The elongated nature of Gameweek 26 because of a first-ever Winter break has been made worse by the postponement of Manchester City vs West Ham due to storm Ciara.

The reigning Champions already have a congested schedule coming up and will now face the Hammers at a later point this Gameweek.

Nice article mate thanks. I bought in Barnes this week and own Aguero, Jimi and Traore so this gives me some added confidence in them

Hi Zophar, nice article. It’s not clear to me what the second table is showing when you look at xGOT for the teams and why the data differs to the first table - what am I missing?

        Thank you
The first picture showing xGOT conceded is for the past six weeks. For defenders I like to use a longer period as I feel that is more representative.
The second picture showing xGOT non penalty is for the last four weeks, which I feel is more relevant for attackers.
So they are for two different periods, the first image is relevant to the defender watchlist and the second to attackers

Obviously, but surely it could have been amended. If you added "then rearranged" to the second paragraph, and deleted the third it would have given the appearance of being up to date. How long would that take ?

They don't just post the article on the website when they want to. Moderators need to review and approve it so I doubt it's under his control if he submitted the article before the announcement.

Yes. The moderators should have picked up on it, and made the amendments before approving it. Obviously it's not the fault of Zaphar. I write magazine articles for a living, and am aware that events can happen that are beyond the authors control.

None of their doomsday predictions have come to fruition over the years, they just keep changing the dates. I think we've got about 10 years left according to Prince Charles (who seems to be an expert on these things)...

Some people (certainly not the entire scientific community) have made loose predictions based upon imperfect data. That hardly discredits global warming as a theory. Global warming has very strong scientitic consensus.

There aren't vast numbers of scientists / experts who have a different view. If you're going to present something as a fact, you'll need to support that fact with evidence, otherwise what can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.

Even if you have never paid any real attention to the climate change “debate,” you have probably seen someone say that, “97% of climatologists agree that we are causing climate change.” This is a number that I have personally cited on numerous occasions, and it is a number that is highly contested by the climate change deniers. Indeed, I rarely mention the consensus without people responding by adamantly proclaiming that the 97% number is a myth, and the study that produced it (Cook et al. 2013) has been debunked. Therefore, in this post, I want to deal with the consensus on climate change from several angles. First, I want to focus on the prominent Cook et al. study and explain what the authors actually did, what they found, and why their study was robust. I also want to deal with some of the common criticisms of their study. Finally, I want to look at several other lines of evidence that show that there is a strong consensus on global climate change.

    Hi all,

Currently have: Maddison/Vardy/Foster/Tamori/Williams In my squad.

What is the more pressing transfer? Foster out? And play both Maddison and Vardy, keeping them for their good run after.

Foster has a really tough run of games.

    Thanks

Isn't an 'Expected Goal' by definition 'On Target'? Am I missing something here?

If player takes pen and miss a goal than xG from that was 0.0?

Nope, expected goals counts shots that are not on target as well

      Very different things!

xG is a pre-shot model, it tells you how good a chance is.

xGOT is a post-shot model, it tell you a players shooting ability

So xGOT is similar to % shot accuracy?

In some ways, but not others.

This is a far more sophisticated model, where shooting performance, or SGA (Shooting goals added), can be found by xGOT - xG.

A well performing forward will have a strong positive SGA whereas a poorer finisher would be negative.

Shot accuracy doesn't take into account where the ball finishes in the goal, just whether it's in target or not

Take two shots from outside the box.

Both will have low xG's as they're taking a crack from range - that's the pre-shot estimation of chance quality.

One shot goes down the middle, one is perfectly in the top corner - the xGOT model looks at where this shot ends up, as it's a post shot model.

So the shot that's easily saveable, right down the middle, is quite low on xGOT. The shot that goes top corner is rewarded for being a great finish so has a higher xGOT.

Based on the cumulation of xGOT on shots, you can tell whether a player is a better finisher or not.

Thanks for explaining all this, I always wondered what the diffrence was between these, but for me once it gets to looking at these sort of stats FPL starts to lose its fun appeal.

To be more accurate, xGOT divided by xG would give you a metric to judge a player’s finishing ability. xGOT on its own is influenced by the number and quality of the chances.

And to this end, it’s a shame we are not allowed to do basic functionality in the tables like this (such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing columns).

Although, this metric could still be influenced by the type of chances as a better finisher may be able to differentiate himself with more a difficult chance versus a sitter. If there’s enough data, you would hope that this would be minimal though as it would be based on a range of chance types.

cheers, if you had to choose between VVD and Firmino, which one?
I'm finding it easier to fill the def spot with guys but not the third forward spot which is why im leaning to Firmino, but i know he's streaky in fpl

I would prefer VVD. As you say Firmino is streaky and as the Champions League returns I think Liverpool will conserve energy by winning the remaining games 1-0 and 2-0 so less scope for Firmino to run up big scores.

Plenty of other decent forward options in Ings, Vardy, DCL, Jimenez...

like miguel sanchez worried liverpool attacking output will suffer once champs league is back in and the league is won. Also captaincy vs mo and mane will be tough so i like the idea of just going with one

          Fair enough.

World # is doing it. Clearly not worried about that. Team quality and player quality is what it is; even if the PL gets sealed in 31, they would still want to drill game patterns at a high intensity to set the rhythm and tempo for UCL knock out games.

I think there are a lot more relevant things to worry about, but that's just me. Taking a hit to move from double LIV defense and KdB to Mane TAA and Doherty most likely, a lot more worried about City's Leicester game.

    Henderson
    TAA VVD Dunk
    Salah(c) KDB Grealish Traore
    Vardy Ings DCL

    McGovern Lundstram Soyuncu Dendoncker

    1 FT, 3.9 ITB

Plan has always been DCL >> Jimenez, due to the fixture swing and Vardys getting good from GW28

If I use my FT on that, is anything else worth a hit this week??

    Any Sky players around?

I'm really at a loss about how to approach the City game now. I overhauled with Aguero, KDB & Mahrez with the intention of moving on to Ings, Salah & Henderson for Liverpool's Norwich fixture. I'm going to need to keep at least one City player to cover the single game day but I'm thinking of delaying the transfers until the Liverpool West Ham monday night game. However that would leave me with just VVD & TAA for the Norwich game. That seems woefully under-covered to me?

    What's everyone else's plans?

    New Community Article

Got a couple of good community articles going up today!

Here's the first one, by Rich, taking a look at his FPA metric and what may cause errors in this model. A really detailed look into all the cases, which adds a valuable caveat to his previous parts!
