Making the most of Gameweek 26’s FPL limbo

Limbo: “an uncertain period of awaiting a decision or resolution; an intermediate state or condition”.

It truly does feel like the FPL community has slipped into oblivion this week. The elongated nature of Gameweek 26 because of a first-ever Winter break has been made worse by the postponement of Manchester City vs West Ham due to storm Ciara.

The reigning Champions already have a congested schedule coming up and will now face the Hammers at a later point this Gameweek.

Is there any chance the Sheffield United vs Bournemouth game from this GW could still be cancelled?

Don’t want Rico’s 1pt stinking up my team.

They don't respect the refs though anyway. I am not saying that is the fault of the Bournemouth players in particular, that is "normal" and has been for many years now.

Surely Gosling, Eddie Howe etc. should be the ones apologising to the Bournemouth fans for their crapness, not the ref apologising for bringing it up.

I imagine the conversation was no more than:

            "You're shite ref"

"No, you're shite, look at the league table"

I very much doubt the ref just started taking the piss for no reason. Bournemouth should be concentrating more on their pathetic recent performances.

If you benched him because of the lineup this week you didn't get his 7 points. I'm starting him regardless. 20-30 mins of Lundstram is better than 90 mins of Rico.

A couple of options here. Should I back Everton through their tough games?
          1. Holgate + Lundstram -> Boly + Taylor.
          2. Lundstram + Maupay -> Taylor + DCL.
          3. Other moves.

          TAA, Stephens, Williams.
          Grealish, KDB, Mane, Salah.
          Maupay, Ings, Aubameyang.
          Stek, Lundstram, Dendoncker, Holgate.

The Review: GW 26 Part 1

Greetings! With GW 26 spread over 2 weeks of football, I have decided to split this GW’s review into 2 halves. In this half, I talk about the teams that have already played:

(Raw data taken from FFScout and FFH with permission)

          1) Ever since Carlo Ancelotti has taken over, Calvert Lewin is top for shots inside the box, big chances, shots on target and xG for all Premier League players. His owners richly deserved the 11 point haul against Crystal Palace, considering that his numbers have been suggesting that a big score was a long time coming. He has been averaging over one big chance per game and over three shots inside the box per game ever since the Italian has taken over – the fact that he also has a better shots inside the box per game ratio than Agüero/Salah over the same period is actually frightening and just further emphasizes the value he is representing.

          2) The fact that Palace have picked up only 9 points from a possible 33 from GW 16 onwards coincides with a complete collapse in their attacking and defensive numbers – particularly away from home. Palace have the worst xGc and are the only team to concede over ≈10 shots inside the box per game away from home over the same period. They have only conceded 8 goals over these 6 games however, which has camouflaged their underlying numbers. Further, Palace over the same run are the only team to average less than one big chance created per game for goal threat hence the takeaway from this for FPL managers is that Palace in this slump is a good team to target for clean sheets and goals – especially when they play away from home.

          3) A spell of 7 points over the past 4 GW’s caps off what has been a very frustrating run for Matt Ryan’s owners. However, the raw data suggests that they have been unlucky, as backed up by the statistical model xG which ranks Brighton top for underperformance over the past 4 GW’s – the Seagulls have conceded 8 goals in comparison to a xGc of ≈3.1 over the same period. Granted the fixtures were favorable, but the improvement in numbers has been apparent: Brighton have conceded ≈6.5 shots inside the box per game and ≈1.5 big chances per game over the past 4 GW’s as compared to ≈8.78 shots inside the box per game and ≈2.18 big chances per game over the rest of the season.

          4) A points per game average of over ≈5 for Abdoulaye Doucoure ever since Nigel Pearson has taken over the helm isn’t quite reflective of his actual goal threat and assist potential. Doucoure averages a shade over a shot inside the box, ≈0.2 big chances per game and ≈0.2 big chances created per game over the same run yet has accumulated points at a fast rate ala Yaya Toure. 13 midfielders have accumulated more shots inside the box and 16 have recorded more big chances over the same run. Famous last words, but I don’t think the rate at which Doucoure has been scoring points is sustainable.

If you’re looking to follow more of my content, you can follow me @bigmanbakar on Twitter/Instagram. Computations and analysis my own. Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone for taking the time out to read patiently, good luck for the remainder of GW 26 – may your arrows be green!

One factor that’s not considered in those stats is that Brighton conceded early in those games and went behind. It’s a natural tendency for teams that are ahead to attack less so Brighton would have conceded a higher number of chances and would have a higher xGc if they hadn’t already conceded early on.

Ah TFF... I was hoping to keep DCL under the radar!

I'm very happy to keep him for ars MUN. So far, he's got me 8,5,2,11. Those aren't even that bad fixtures. che LIV is rough though and I'll probably sell if he blanks both. But I have other issues to sort out.

I'm very glad I didn't WC. Team is coming together and if Mane is back and fit, that's a nice differential on the top 100K spots.

Yeah, didn't think DCL and Doucouré would do so welI and I didn't own a lot of highly owned players with good fixtures this GW, so I wildcarded and took them both out.

I don't regret it and it's way too early to judge that move, but I feel like I might have been a bit too hasty and could have waited at least one more GW.

In the second of the days Community articles, FPL Virgin has taken a look at FPL goal involvement and how some simple maths can form a fairly powerful predictive model.

Much like Rich's CA earlier today, we're following a theme of talisman and how we should best target them.

Actually considering downgrading Auba to DCL and going for a mid range front line.

Jiminez, Ings and DCL. Beef up that midfield.

          potential Aurier replacement:

Reece James: + good assist potential
          - more expensive and rotation risk

Lascelles: + cheap to free up funds and nailed
          - Newcastle

Max budget is 5.2... Bertrand being spoken of favourably but have McCarthy. other options?

Don't think he's a rotation risk at all.
May get him in 28, Doherty for 27. Would mean and a back 4 of TAA Robertson Doherty Reece in 29 and 31.

Afternoon all - work has annoyingly been keeping me off FFS 😉

Given DCLs prolific stats and performance I am (along with others) considering holding onto him. What do you think of my updated plan over the next 2 GWs?

GW27: Vardy > Jimi (FT) - playing the fixtures and form imo
          GW28: Martial, Grealish > Son, Barnes (-4)

This will give me this team for BGW28 with plenty of cash itb for future upgrades/ formation changes:

          £3.5itb
          McCarthy, (McGovern)
          TAA, VVD, Holgate, (Stevens), (Williams)
          Salah, (KDB), Son, Barnes, Cantwell
          Jimi, Ings, DCL

          Thoughts?

          Cheers!

Neither was I until I considered the form/ eye test and then compared the stats of DCL, Jimi and Vardy over the last 6 GWs. The results are overwhelmingly conclusive. Vardy is easily expendable until he regains form imo. Barnes is a decent cover for the fixtures.

If for some reason Vardy explodes this weekend I can switch back to the original plan of keeping Vardy and dropping DCL but atm doesn’t appeal.

Why not just keep all 3?

Transfers not made gives you room to improve elsewhere. I don't think Jimenez is an upgrade over Vardy especially with Vardy's fixture swing beginning GW28.

I get where you’re coming from. But for at least the last 6 matches the combination of eye test and stats for Vardy have been exceedingly poor. Compare them to both Jimi and DCL and it becomes clear (until his form returns) which of the 3 to have.

Martial is really just pants. Remains to be seen if he will uptick with Bruno or Ighalo there but not sure I’d like to keep him on that premise.

If I kept those 3 where would you be looking to upgrade then? Currently 3.3itb.

True. I'd prefer Jimenez too I think. But there are more important transfers to make imo especially with the fixture turn and the return of Ndidi.

Martial and Grealish should find new homes with poor fixtures/form. Just start moving on those and hold onto Vardy. Part of FPL as well is deciding which issues are most pressing. And for me the midfield is the priority to fix.

I don’t disagree in theory but I like playing the form/ stats game and therefore I would say Vardy and Martial would be top of my list for moving on atm. I have held Martial for long enough so I feel I should give him the WAT match as his swan song.

I’d like a WOL asset for GW27 (and beyond) and if I were to choose between Jimi and Traoré it surely has to be Jimi.

It’s a tough one. Hoping performances this weekend (and postponed MCI game) help give me more of a steer.

Also happy I still have WC in my pocket!

Who should I let go ahead of GW 28?

          A) Grealish
          B) Egan
          C) Aguero
          D) KdB

Currently leaning towards A even though I'd lose a lot of TV. He's fixtures are very tough GW 20 and beyond and he doesn't perform that well vs the top clubs.

How does my plan look for BGW28

          Henderson McCarthy
          TAA VVD Stevens Lascelles Taylor
          Salah KDB Richarlison Grealish Hayden
          Auba Jimenez Ings

Got 2FTs but will probably burn it as I see nothing pressing at all. Maybe Steven's to Egan just to save some cash..

GW27 > Grealish and Auba to Son and DCL

PRICE CHANGES! In the middle of a gameweek......Agggggggggggggh (I know, long gameweek etc etc!)
0.1 shy of Maupay & Grealish -> Ings & Traore.
12.7 to spend on a mid & striker combo, any suggestions?
          Cheers!

Sorry, not really good at convincing 😀

                Will give a try:

Season end punt you can say. Fighting for survival (or new team), lone striker, probably no blank, should be fine till WC or next DGW atleast.

LEI, SOU, EVE, BHA, WHM, BUR at home till season end. Away games are also ok

            Already own DLC.
I was considering benching Maupay and doing DLC & Grealish -> Ings & Traore?!
Feels like a rubbish alternative though!

Maybe Woods as recommended by Holmes. Norwich fixtures do perk up a bit from GW30, but they might be all but gone by then.

I can afford Maupay to Woods straight swap.
                No need to sacrifice Grealish.
                This could be the answer.

This does mean I'd be Ings'less moving forward!

Cheap for what he might offer and exactly what MUFC could have done with. Guessing Ed and his mates are too busy patting themselves on the back over Ighalo to have started worrying about next season yet.

Not sure about that, but a good young squad is being built up there - will be very interesting in the coming years if Man U, Arsenal and Spurs get their act together too.

Imagine telling your friends about FPL and all the fun and joy it gives and they start playing for the first time this year. And now they meet with gameweek 26. This has to be worse than an international break, right?!

Mate I have played with for years couldn't be bothered this season: "Boring" he said - now we have just gone back to talking about real football and doing impressions of old friends and teachers.

I've complained to my friends, who I've played with for years. That this FPL season is the least fun, imo. So much randomness happening and stuff like this GW, just meh.

February fullstop seems to have stalled completely

January went by in what seemed like the blink of an eye, yet here we are what feels like 6 months later and it's still only the second week of Feb

Definitely some sort of glitch in the matrix's temporal parameter settings
