Long can form FPL double-up with Ings for kind Saints’ fixtures

As the Fantasy Premier League templates continues to dissolve, this week with the injury to Son Heung-min (£10.0m), the importance of differentials continues to rise.

Gameweek 26 saw attacking returns for the likes of Nicolas Pépé (£9.1m), Abdoulaye Doucouré (£5.7m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.5m), all of whom have ownership of 5% or less.

With just 12 Gameweeks to go till the end of the season, we’ve selected three more differentials that could help you rise up the rankings, including an incredible cheap striker and a Luis Figo-endorsed midfielder.

Shane Long

  • FPL ownership: 2.0%
  • Price: £4.6m
  • GW27-31 fixtures: AVL | whu | NEW | nor | ARS

It’s fair to say Shane Long (£4.6m) has been one of Southampton’s unsung heroes in their recent revival.

Since returning to the starting 11 in Gameweek 15, Saints have pulled clear of the relegation zone, and now sit comfortably in 12th place, with 31 points.

Long has been a key figure during that run, and such has been his recent form (he’s scored two and assisted one in his last six appearances in all competitions), it’s looking increasingly likely that he’ll return to Mick McCarthy’s Republic of Ireland setup when the next squad is announced.

Whilst many view the Irishman as a facilitator, creating space for others, his threat has increased of late. In fact, over the last four Gameweeks, he’s ahead of striker partner Danny Ings (£7.1m) for shots in the box, shots on target, big chances and chances created.

Aston Villa arrive at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday with well-documented issues at the back. They’ve failed to keep a clean sheet on the road this season, giving up 168 shots in the process, more than any other club.

With winnable games to follow against West Ham, Newcastle United and Norwich, Long should have plenty of opportunities to add to his goal-scoring tally, and could be a shrewd pick for those in search of a cheap third forward.

Bruno Fernandes

  • FPL ownership: 3.6%
  • Price: £8.1m
  • GW27-31 fixtures: WAT | eve | MCI | tot | SHU

Manchester United’s new playmaker, Bruno Fernandes (£8.1m), has already added a new dimension to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in just two league starts.

Always on the front foot, the Portuguese international showcased his ability to score and assist at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, hitting the post with a superb free-kick and providing the corner for Harry Maguire (£5.2m) to make it 2-0.

Such is his quality, Fernandes already created more chances and taken more shots than any other teammate since he arrived.

The midfield conductor scored 63 goals in 137 matches for Sporting, and was named the Primeira Liga’s player of the year in both 2017-18 and 2018-19, which bodes well for those investing early.

That win against Chelsea has thrust United straight back into the race for Champions League qualification, as they moved up the table to seventh – just three points behind Frank Lampard’s men in fourth.

Up next are relegation threatened Watford, who have failed to win any of their last five matches in all competitions – a run which has seen them concede eight goals.

For some time now, there has not been enough creativity in United’s midfield, and whilst two games is too small a sample size to draw conclusions, early signs suggest Fernandes can provide the spark they need.

Dwight McNeil

  • FPL ownership: 0.4%
  • Price: £6.0m
  • GW27-31 fixtures: BOU | new | TOT | mci | WAT

Winger Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) has continued to impress this term, following his breakout campaign in 2018-19.

This season, he has started every Premier League game, contributing one goal and five assists, whilst his Expected Goals (xA) tally is the sixth-highest total of any player, behind only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m), Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m), Raheem Sterling (£11.7m), Emi Buendía (£6.0m) and James Maddison (£7.5m).

His partnership with Charlie Taylor (£4.2m) down Burnley’s left channel has been extremely effective in recent matches, which has seen McNeil often drift into more central, dangerous areas. As anyone who has watched Burnley can testify, it’s probably their key attacking weapon right now.

Last weekend’s 2-1 win at Southampton, their third league win in four outings, has seen the Clarets move 10 points clear of the bottom three and raised the prospect of a late European surge.

Next up at Turf Moor is Bournemouth, who have a poor defensive record on the road, conceding nine on their last four road trips against Sheffield United, Norwich City, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Despite only turning 20 years old in November, McNeil has already established himself as an England Under-21 international, and looks a good option for investment given Burnley’s schedule.

    A) Salah: Better stats at home, but could be off penalties with Henderson injured allowing Milner to possibly play.

    B) Mane: Playing against Zabaleta, but Salah with the better stats.

People owning both, who are you captaining and why?

As a fan who became disinterested around the time of the stadium move, I think WH are down. The club is in a mess and so are the team. It's them, Norwich and one from the others. Villa have some fight, so I expect them to just about be safe.

I think there's enough there to keep you up. You have a habit of pulling out unexpected results so I am loathe to bet against you.

I thought Villa would be comfortably mid table but the injury to McGinn seems to have hampered them.

I've held Alli for so long - since Son got red carded over Christmas. I've only gotten 2 hauls from him but I've been relatively patient with him - hoping he finally delivers this week. He loves scoring against Chelsea too, and will have a point to prove to Jose.

I’ve had alli ages and his returns haven’t been enough, going to consider losing him unless he hauls this week. He has done ok for me tho, captained him for one haul and predicted his recent haul but didn’t cap for that one.
The hauls aside so hot and miss with him, many games he looks like he could get big points but doesn’t, the week I lose him he will go big.

Bit stuck here. Team looks good but 50 points behind in ML and very few differentials. Thinking of ditching Sidibe. Any advice greatly appreciated:

    McCarthy (Button)
Lundstram / Rico / TAA (Cathcart / Sidibe)
KDB / Salah / Grealish / Richarlison (Hayden)
    Ings / Firmino / Jimenez

    £1.8m ITB, 1 FT

      Sidibe to Boly
      Richarlison to Bergwijn or Martial/fernandes

Rival has Henderson*, Robertson*, Digne*, Lundstram, Soyuncu*, Tanganga*, KDB, Salah, Traore*, Son*, Noble*, Ings, Maupay*, Firmino

Actually quite a few differentials... any thoughts?

    So who wins or Saturday:

    A) Wilder
    B) Fury

Can only see it being won by a Wilder KO or Fury points decision win

Yeah Wilder KO or Fury points. Neither would surprise me. Betting money has to be on Fury points. But if Wilder connects...

Fury: "You’re the 3rd best heavyweight in the world!"
      Wilder: "Who’s number 2?"
      Fury: "Yo momma!"

Gonna share a few thoughts on this week's matches if I may.

    1. Burnley v Bournemouth was a nailed-on 0-0 a few weeks ago but both teams have had a mini-resurgence recently, with Burnley scoring 6 goals (and 10 points) in the last 4 and Bournemouth 6 goals and 6 points in their last 3. Home advantage should see Burnley grab the win but don't be surprised if neither side keep a clean sheet. Expecting some points for the old favourites, Fraser and Wilson.

    2. Southampton v Villa is a battle of two rubbish defences with one of the worst home records facing the only side not to keep an away CS. I remember a match just like this one, Norwich v Bournemouth in GW9, it ended 0-0. However if we consider the likelier case which is both teams scoring, Long v Ings reminds me quite a bit of Jota v Jimenez at Wolves, where the cheaper option often looks dangerous but rarely outscores the more expensive one. Yet we know what Jota can offer, with another hat trick yesterday, and Long has a great record v Villa so if he's going to take one chance to outscore Ings this is the week.

    3. City are a wounded animal after events of the previous week, Jesus probably got a rollicking after his terrible performance against West Ham and Aguero would be scratching his head at how he managed a blank as well. Mahrez is facing his former club and Pep would want a win to motivate them for the big one v RM midweek. Leicester were completely outplayed on a tactical level in the GW18-19 double and I don't see Brendan being able to produce a masterclass this time either. They'll be suffocated and I would happily bet on another Vardy blank.

    4. United left Bruno on the bench against Bruges on Thursday and immediately went back to their sh*t old selves with Pereira and Lingard in the midfield. It's so clear what he brings to the team and I'd much rather own Bruno than Martial who often looks half-arsed, especially if the team are being frustrated, there's a reason why he got no bonus despite getting the winning goal against Watford and rarely gets any bonus usually anyway. Watford know how to frustrate and if it's 0-0 after 60 minutes I can see Bruno trying his best to win it and Martial whinging as usual. On set pieces, shoot on sight policy and well rested in midweek, easily the better choice for this week.

    5. Norwich's league position has been deceptive for a while now, their performances against Leicester, Spurs and Liverpool in the past 10 GWs suggest they're really not whipping boys and Wolves aren't known for their big wins either. Given their position, I'd have expected Norwich to really give it a go and grab a draw in this match. However unfortunately for them, Zimmermann is out again and, alongside Byram and Hernandez, means that Norwich are back to their injury-ravaged status from the early days of the season. All 3 of Jimenez, Jota and Traore were taken off early against Espanyol and I don't see fatigue playing a part so soon after the winter break. Wolves should win this one easily.

Apologies for the long post but hope this has been helpful for someone.

Thanks for the detailed post. A few things:

      2) Personally I don't see the appeal of Long at all. At least Jota can be explosive - as his hat-tricks show, but Long scores about 2-3 goals per year 😆

      3) I agree, although Vardy still managed a goal vs. City last time out despite his team being totally outplayed.

      4) I don't get why Bruno is so well-liked here but to each their own. (just to be clear, I'm not saying he's rubbish, I just haven't seen enough yet)

Yea long is a bridge too far, Ings is enough and maybe a saints defender. 2 Saints attackers is way too much

I would agree that Long is a bad option, but that's because forward slots are so valuable and Ings is so much more consistent. I'm sure given the choice most people would choose Jimenez over Jota every time as well. But there's always that one week where the cheap option goes big before going back to his string of 2s, and I'm wondering whether this is the week.

Re. Vardy, was bang in form back then, had one chance and took it well. I don't think Leicester have been playing to his strengths as much recently and given one opportunity, I think it's far more likely that he ends up looking like a striker that hasn't scored for two months, cos that's what he is.

Re. Bruno, MU bandwagons work differently as the sheep move early and at speed. The whole team is streaky AF and by the time you've seen enough the bandwagon will be over. I joined the herd last night and would readily accept a string of blanks because there aren't any other options that excite me. Just hoping for the best on this one, but I absolutely think he's a better pick than Martial who just depresses me every time I watch

Jimenez for me. Mainly worried about Southhamps lack of ability to keep possesion. Ings' underlying stats suggests that he is overperforming.

    Which transfer do you prefer?

    A) Reid to Boly
-> This move allows me to benchboth Lundstram (out of favour?) and Aurier (bad fixture)

    B) DCL to Ings
-> Forced to play Aurier or Lundstram but I get an inform striker with good fixtures and get rid of a player in good form but with bad fixtures

Leaning towards A, as I feel like DCL + Boly will likely outscore Ings + Aurier/Lundstram.

    Thoughts gents?

Aurier could get attacking returns tomorrow though. I'd play him.

He could, but my other two defenders are TAA and Gomez in a 3-4-3. So no space for aurier if I get Boly. Does this change your opinion?

Yea although Aurier is typically ass, that Chelsea game isn’t a bad fixture. Spurs will concede probably m, but Aurier is always just round the corner from a 2 assist game
