How the top 10k FPL managers prepared for Blank Gameweek 28

The reduced nature of Blank Gameweek 28 has triggered some chip usage among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

With Manchester City, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Sheffield United assets all out of action, decisions had to be made so that full XIs might be fielded.

There was a smattering of chip deployment although it appears as if traditional transfers were the main defence against blanks.

5% of managers in the top 10k took this opportunity to play the Free Hit, bringing the total usage of this chip at that level to 21.1%.

A fair number of those worldwide decided to follow suit, 3.22% overall deploying the Free Hit chip, an estimated 239,000+ managers.

It will be interesting to see how these individuals navigate the lack of fixtures in Blank Gameweek 31 and Blank Gameweek 34.

Meanwhile, some took this opportunity to overhaul their whole squad for good, making use of their second Wildcard of the campaign.

3.11% deployed that chip, bringing the total usage of it among the top 10k to 35.3%.

We’ll analyse how those new squads shaped up for Blank Gameweek 28 a little bit later.

First, let’s examine the make-up of the standard squads in the top 10k, to see whether the blanks have caused any gaps.

As you can see, 80.9% of them opted to hold onto Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) despite his absence from Premier League action this weekend – and a possible blank in Gameweek 31 after facing Manchester United and Burnley.

However, the same faith was not shown in Jack Grealish (£6.6m) in light of Aston Villa’s involvement in the EFL Cup final.

After the Gameweek 27 deadline, the mid-price midfielder was sat in 52% of top 10k squads, but his ownership at this level has dropped off a cliff in the last seven days.

Grealish is no longer among the top five most-popular midfielders in the top 10k following the Blank Gameweek 28 deadline, dropping to just 24.7% ownership.

Interestingly, a total of 20.4% of the top 10k have gone into Blank Gameweek 28 with both De Bruyne and Grealish in their squads.

Taking Grealish’s place in the top-five is Manchester United’s new star midfielder Bruno Fernandes (£8.2m), who has already persuaded 29.6% of the top 10k managers to snap him up.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mané (£12.4m) remains a differential at this level, sitting in just 26.4% of teams.

An additional blank, of sorts, was added into the Blank Gameweek 28 equation roughly an hour before the deadline on Friday night as Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) was ruled out with a calf injury.

Despite an ongoing goalless run, which stretches back to Gameweek 18, the Leicester man was the subject of transfers in over the last few days ahead of a trip to Norwich.

That meant that between Gameweek 27 and Blank Gameweek 28, Vardy’s top 10k ownership increased from 47.7% to 55.5%.

The cruel twist in the tale for over half the managers at this level was, of course, that he ended up playing no part on Friday night.

However, they could end up having the last laugh in light of Brendan Rodgers’ latest update, which indicated Vardy could be bac to face Aston Villa in Gameweek 29.

Meanwhile, there were slight drops in ownership for Danny Ings (£7.1m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.9m).

Also, it would appear that top 10k managers took steps to plug the gap in goal, as Nick Pope (£4.7m) rose to 55% ownership at this level between the two most recent Gameweeks, replacing Dean Henderson (£5.2m) as the most popular shot-stopper.

Of those who Wildcarded in the top 10k, 63.3% of them selected Vardy, while 27% opted for his team-mate Harvey Barnes (£6.0m).

Fernandes and Mané were much more heavily represented by the Wildcarders than the main squads, selected by 59.5% and 48.2% respectively.

With Blank Gameweek 31 in mind, the most popular budget defenders proved to be Romain Saïss (£4.4m) and Charlie Taylor (£4.2m).

Finally, the captaincy looks to be another one-sided affair for Blank Gameweek 28.

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) proved to be the overwhelmingly popular choice among the top 10k, selected by 70% of them for the armband.

Meanwhile, the 11.7% who went with Vardy will naturally be hoping their vice-captain can bail them out of his Blank Gameweek 28 absence.

Mané, in combination with his relatively low ownership among the top 10k, looks poised to be a powerful differential captain choice too. Just 9.3% at this level put the armband on the Senegalese international.

    Richarlison > Traore or Saka?

This is to fund Vardy to Auber.

    (2 FT).

    Or should I hold?

My season has gone to crap last few weeks

All started with Mane, Vardy and Abraham getting injured same week. I wildcarded. Brought in Aguero who got 4 points in 3 weeks. Also got Williams and Hayden who dont seem to be nailed on. When I get a chance to bench boost I will never know.

This week I did Vardy and Martial in for a hit......

    Gone from 50k to 98k

Looks like I might be taking a 12 or 16 point hit to sort this out. Loads of players I want. Auba, Richarlson, Bruno etc

Anybody else fallen away in the last third of the season? My team has literally 2 goals in the last 3 weeks.

Yeah, my team looks good on paper for next week. Its just players like Perez and Traore. Bring them in and nothing.

The first half of the season was easy. Perma captain Vardy and you had a decent spine of players that performed every week.

That seems to have changed last few weeks.

Need to keep your cool on the home straight and let all around you burn points and make bad calls. Vardy wasn’t worth a hit, he’s in bad form. Martial is now clearly second pick behind Bruno too. Slow down and think about it!

Is there anything worse than that sinking feeling when you deliberate over and carefully plan a transfer only for the player to be ruled out by injury? DCL > Vardy hurts and a similar thing occurred last season with Firmino. Would be nice if there was much more transparency from managers or updates before deadlines. I just need to suck it up, rely on Dendoncker now as my 11th player and get Auba next GW

You were unlucky mate and you are a strong strategist. I'm a panic transfer type and did Martial+Traore to Barnes+Bruno for a hit when I could have easily saved and accepted things. Regardless of fixtures I'm fairly sure Vardy to Auba for me. Triple Leicester in my squad is clearly a bit risky with their form.

What? Vardy out was info available more than an hour before deadline ... and the rumors started circulating 5 hours pre-match.

This is why transfers are held as long as possible if one wants to mitigate specific/unsystematic/idiosyncratic risk.

Knowing where to look is as important as checking the official channes. otherwise, you will always be on the wrong side of the asymmetric information divide.

Twitter is the place for early team news from ITK personell. People there covering Wolves, Leicester, Brighton, plus FPL Rockstar who has the opening game pretty much each gw. Follow a few of the main ones and they'll retweet the pre-game stuff that is valid.

That’s all well and good but if it is the middle of the night here and I’m occupied with a distraught child it’s extremely unlucky. You can’t dismiss that as I am always a patient manager and waited for all the relevant information before strategically making a move. I’m not asking you to be sympathetic, or even empathetic, however, it was certainly not a rash and misinformed decision

I were too quick to judge, sorry. I have a trigger response to the knee-jerk 'unlucky' (or explain-it-away-quickly-without-additional-thought heuristic), especially when the information is out there. Spewed my general frustration at managers conveniently throwing away responsibility for their decisions onto you.

On the plus side, he should be back for Aston Villa, which is the gw we all really want him for, no? 🙂

You are right, I assumed you didn't wait, and you did, to an extent (slightly short due to daughter; if you could have waited until 15 before deadline the more well-known early lineup leaker FPL Rockstar would have had you covered). However, I also assumed you didn't check the relevant unofficial sources, which you confirmed you didn't (if you did, you would know Seanfromderby leaked the lineup over an hour before deadline, and he had given a heads up the week in advance). In short, you were at a disadvantage because you lacked the knowledge of where to gather useful information. Part of the game between gws to find reliable team sources, if possible, if you want to maximize your advantage.

Sympathies on the parental duties. I'm not saying digging up sources is easy, it requires a good degree of planning, searching, verifying, more time and energy than most would give their hobby.

I inferred as much. The comment is aimed at helping them see through the assumptions they hold that lead them to believe these statements: 'unlucky', 'more transparency...pre-deadline updates'.

I'm challenging those cognitive restrictions. No, it was not unlucky. There were updates before deadline. Seanfromderby on twitter even announced last week he would have the lineup for this game early. The risk could have been diversified by waiting.

I’m not thick but I find you very rude. I started replying before the other comments and got distracted. It’s late, i have kids, I’m tired. You understand.

Anyway, that’s the risk of not checking all team news sources then.

Ok well you’re unlucky in that you can’t wait until the deadline to make your transfers. It is in line with the time zone of the competition though so I don’t really know what can be done about it. Managers aren’t always going to give clear indication of injuries in advance. So yeah, you have to suck it up as you say.

I’ll ignore the ‘I’m rude” comment 🙂 . My reason for the delayed comment was genuine and I’m sure I’ve seen just as blunt an answer from you to others on site.

No worries. I like you and your posts. No Vardy is unlucky. I saw the news, took a hit and moved to Firmino. It’s still annoyed me though.

      Firstly; Vardy owner.
I saw the leaked team sheet (which for the record, I think adds a sullied element to FPL) and decided I wasn’t tempted away from Vardy.
He’ll be back next week. Let him party against Villa!

      Irbox, I feel your pain.
      One comment you make though:
“Would be nice if there was much more transparency from managers or updates before deadlines.”

Yeah it would... from an FPL pov.
But Rogers isn’t playing FPL. He’s a PL manager who is trying to ensure his team hold as much of an advantage over his opposition as they can.
      He owes us nothing.
If it were me. I’d be full on Pep ‘tight-lipped’ Guardiola. Not seeking to serve the grown men who play our all consuming games. But seeking to serve the team that pay his wages and are involved in a multi-million (billion?) pound industry.

It sucks when shiz like this goes down (and sorry for the crying child - I know that pain), but reality check - PL managers aren’t here for FPL managers, they’re here for their team, their fans, and the 3pts at stake every week.

I personally have Greenwood coming off the bench... unless of course Martial doesn’t pull through, in which case, it’ll be Rico!
And if that isn’t enough to make a child cry - I don’t know what is!

Thanks mate, very thoughtful post. It is what it is. Onwards and upwards. Good luck to you with Greenwood, but I would prefer a Holgate clean sheet 😉

Don’t get me wrong - Greenwood was not there by choice or design!
But as his 8pter sat on my bench last week, I figure (flawed logic!), he owes me something in my starting XI this!

Hope the remaining 7 work out for you.

I guess for now the real winners are those who are on 0 from 0 players and the potential to still field 11. Will be interesting to see how it develops - personally I don't doubt that it can be a sh*&ty gameweek for everyone, regardless of whether they saw the Vardy news or not!

I held, and am awaiting Greenwood off the bench. I made an early transfer with one of my two FTs yesterday (Rico to Lascelles), and today used the other one for Vardy to Ings.

In hindsight I wouldn't have spent the first transfer yesterday and would've done Vardy and Martial to Ings and Bruno (or Richarlison) today, but others have been a lot more unlucky so I'm not complaining.

Well I too now am awaiting Greenwood as I was tucked up in bed when the Vardy news surfaced.

I think we'll be lucky to get more than 1 point but it'll probably be fine as there aren't that many differentials this week.

There's early and then there's early - a few hours before the deadline turns out fine the vast majority of times (today being the exception). Before all the other matches in the gameweek and before a whole raft of cup matches is another thing!

It is - personally I wouldn't do it but can understand the temptation. I guess statistically it's more likely to turn out fine than not, but would make for a very nervous wait that's for sure!
