FPL Double Gameweek 29 confirmed for Manchester City and Arsenal

Arsenal and Manchester City are set for two fixtures in the upcoming Double Gameweek 29.

The two sides will meet on the evening of Wednesday, March 11 at the Etihad Stadium.

That means Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta’s men each have the following fixtures in the Double Gameweek:

  • Manchester United v Manchester City
  • Manchester City v Arsenal
  • Arsenal v West Ham United
  • Manchester City v Arsenal

It may be short notice for Fantasy Premier League managers, with just a few days until the next deadline, but this announcement is sure to send shockwaves through the community.

Still the top-scoring Fantasy asset this season, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) was among the three most-sold assets for Blank Gameweek 28 losing 330,000+ owners ahead of last week’s Friday night deadline.

Meanwhile, no player was transferred out by more managers than Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) for Blank Gameweek 28. Despite an EFL Cup final knock, Guardiola has confirmed the striker is fit and available for the next round of action.

These decisions may have been, in part, influenced by a probable lack of Blank Gameweek 31 fixture. But this Double Gameweek 29 announcement has thrown something of a spanner into the works for Fantasy managers hoping to spend the next few weeks preparing their teams for Blank Gameweek 31.

As ever, Fantasy managers may also be scratching their heads when it comes to assessing which Manchester City assets are likely to start both matches of a Double Gameweek.

Gameweeks 19 to 27

As you can see from the table above, De Bruyne is the only player to have started each of the last 10 matches for Manchester City.

Ederson (£6.0m) probably would have done the same were it not for his Gameweek 19 red card at Wolves but interest in his signature is not expected to be too high for this Double Gameweek.

As it is pitting Manchester City against their local rivals and Arsenal, both teams boasting revitalised attacks in recent weeks, clean sheet potential across the two matches is not too high.

Aguero has started on seven occasions, almost certainly sowing enough doubt to cast aspersions on his viability for Double Gameweek 29.

However, the eight starts and 673 minutes for Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m), as well as three goals and four assists during this period, could make him a powerful differential once again.

Is it time to invest in Arsenal assets after Gameweek 28? 6

However, Fantasy managers may find it easier to consider Arsenal options, especially as their first fixture of Double Gameweek 29 sees them host an obliging West Ham defence.

The Hammers have conceded a total of nine across their last three away trips, an average of three per game. Meanwhile, Manchester City have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight home matches.

That could open the door into Fantasy teams for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m).

The striker has already been involved in 20 goals this season and is behind Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) by just five points in the hunt to be the top-scoring FPL forward this season.

Gameweeks 19 to 27

When we consider the minutes played by Arsenal assets over the last 10 matches, we see that Aubameyang only missed two, the punishment for his Gameweek 22 red card.

Meanwhile, Pépé has been in fantastic form recently, and enough to ease any concerns about just six starts since Gameweek 18.

Despite the handicap of fewer minutes in the selected period, Pépé’s goal tally is beaten only by Aubameyang among Arsenal players, while none of his colleagues has managed more assists than his three.

With a trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30, Arsenal attackers may also have more long-term appeal than Manchester City counterparts considering it’s Burnley up next for Guardiola’s men who, unlike the Gunners, still have European commitments to consider.

How come everyone is suddenly tearing up their original chip strategies due to a DGW confirmation that involves only 2 teams and the fixtures themselves aren't the easiest?

Would you FH this week in my circumstances? I would probably only go for Auba, KdB, Mahrez and Saka from those with doubles.

    - I'm in a fairly good position, ranked 25k OR currently.
    - I am well set up for the blank GW in 31, so don't need to WC now or save FH for then. I can field 11 using only FTs.
    - From those playing twice this week, I only own KdB.
    - I only have one FT and no means of getting Auba in who will likely be the most captained player - somebody I need to at least own to protect my rank.
    - I'd rather not take a -4 to bring him in when there are a few other players in my team who also have question marks over them this week (Traore, Ings) but who should be fine in the weeks to come.
    - I still have my FH, WC and BB. I've been led to believe that GW34 is not going to be that significant in terms of the number of teams with double fixtures, so no need to save my FH for then.
    - Now seems the logical time to use it, as I can prepare for those with doubles in 34 using FTs ahead of time, whereas I haven't been able to prepare for this one as it was only ever a possibility, not a certainty.

        My rough FH draft is:
2 x City, Arsenal, Leicester, Wolves, Liverpool
        1 x Sheffield United (GK/Def)

I kept Vardy for a long time, but patience has run thin, I was looking to do Vardy to Auba this week before the DGW announcement, the DGW is just icing on the cake. This niggling calf injury he's had is worrying, he'll probably prove me wrong it's just I've lost faith personally.

    A) FH29, Meh team for 31, WC32/33, TC/BB 34/37
    B) WC29, good team for 31, FH 34, BB37, TC some other time

Prefer B out of those 2. Just can't help but think that navigating 31 with FTs, FH34, WC35/36, BB37 is still the best strategy... 🙁 Maybe I am stuck in my own ways.

I quite like that. The problem for me is that we still don't know who has DGW/blanks in 34 and who has DGWs in 37 to be able to start planning for those early on. Too many different permutations and it may be very late on that we get a confirmation on which teams play in those game weeks 🙁

FH solves one of gw34/gw37 and the other will be dealt with free transfers. Wildcarding in gw36 means that it's only purpose is to get you a good BB. Using it earlier will get you a good team for the rest of the season. My point is that gw37 is so late and we get many ft's before that.

Same here because I quite like my team right now. I'm probably going to use the wildcard just because it will sort of give me inner peace. When gw37 arrives I'll know if I made the right call lol

I think my problem is the players that I want aside from Arse/City, no way I'm not getting Doherty back on WC, would like Alonso too, I'd have been willing to go without triple Liverpool if they didn't have such a nice fixture in 31.

My team is also a mess but has good fixtures this week so reluctant to use anything, the only double players I have are KdB and Kun, got the latter in for West Ham and was transferring him out this week but he's now a hold ofc.

Yeah I think the WC will be much more powerful closer to the run in to the end of the season. FH it shall be. Won’t really want any of them arsenal or city poo heads after this week anyway really

Im also thinking should I do B. I have only 4 players to gw31 right now, using free transfers I can make it just to 6. (3 Pool and 3 Wolves). Hopefully Leicester lose today, it would be easy WC save then.

            Well, if you think about...………..

About 10 games from 31 and 34 will need to be arranged (say, 6 from 31 and 4 from 34). These are usually split around 50/50 for the 2 late DGWs, so guess 5 will be in 34 and 5 in 37.

These guesses will mean 11 games in GW34 altogether (so 22 fixtures among 20 teams). One or two will probably not have a game at all in 34, so leaves about 3 or 4 with a DGW (as there will be 22 fixtures among 18/19 teams).

Worth doing Robertson > 4.8 defender which enables Ings > Auba for a hit?

    Pope Button
    TAA Robertson Boly Stephens Webster
    Salah KdB Mahrez Grealish Cantwell
    Jimenez DCL Ings

It's a risky move.... Robbo out for a hit if he plays and does well could burn you but of course Auba is probably the best pick this GW....

Go with your gut based on your OR and strategy also!

Morning all - apologies in advance for long post!

This is my GW29 team as it stands after using my FT:

    0FT 0.3itb
    McCarthy
    TAA, VVD, Stevens
    Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Barnes
    Auba (C), Jimi, Ings
    (McGovern) (Cantwell, Holgate, Williams)

Hoping to play WC in 32/33 FH34 and BB37. Between now and GW31 can make the following moves to get a good enough team together:
    McCarthy > Pope
    Stevens > Doherty
    Ings > Jota/ DCL
    Barnes > max 5.1

The issue is this none of these are really good moves for GW30 fixtures-wise.
    So my questions are:
    1. Am I G2G for GW29?
    2. Would you do any of the moves above this week or in GW30 or just roll FT in GW30 and take a -8 for all in GW31?

    Thanks!

          Yep.
          No hurry to bring in Pope;
          Stevens next two look amazing;
          Ings surely will do something - maybe lose early if he looks bad against Newc;
          Barnes - see Ings

Actually realised an alternative to doing Barnes to fodder is to do Fernandes > Sarr. What do you think?

      Gtg

Nice team for this week - nine of the moves add up this time imo. Not sure about moving Barnes on for a minus 4. Think Fernandes out to Alli/Rich is more likely esp with WC to come

The Barnes move is regrettable but necessary to fund the others (need 0.9 for the other 3 moves)...

If you go cheap Wolves at the back could you reach Sarr? Suspect Boly/Saïss and Sarr outrank Doh and likely nothing especially given double hit on a one or two week punt

Just realised given fixtures and GW32 blank I could instead do Fernandes > Sarr and hold onto Barnes. Could then get Doherty still (for either of Stevens, Holgate or Williams).

It's not just the DGW that has had me rethinking my chip strategy, it's also LIV getting knocked out. So here is what I'm planning to do now:

My WC is currently active - I'll be building a team with 2 (maybe even 3) DGW players plus 9 that play in GW31. For my next 2 FTs I'll bring in 2 more, so I can have a full playing XI in 31. Then from there I will be preparing for 37 and using my FH in 34.

I've already used my BB and TC.

Assist potential is fair. My concern is even a clean sheet home vs WHU he's only garnering 3pts as he's a mid. Could be a 4-5 point week, or a nice differential.

Tierney might be fit to play but he has been out for a while so Saka should start both as Arsenal don't have other options. Go for Saka if you are on a wildcard. Otherwise I don't see the point in it

    A) Grealish and Ings (out) to Sarr and Aubameyang (in) -4

    4m itb
Bench : Pope, Lasc, Traore, Lund

Would a hit be worth it to shaft lund for Doherty and play 4-3-3 wiv martial benched?
Also considering Sarr for traore , again to play over Martial in a 3-4-3
    Any alternatives to consider?

Main rival has schmeics gk, Saka, Auba and holgate, Tanganga over lasc, hendo, Traore, Taylor and Jimi

I agree mate, i'm actually going to sit back (i have KdB, like many) and watch others rip their teams up for a change. So many season do i fall for this, only for the single GW team to have outscored the DGW team. Throw in Man City and Pep's constant merry-go-round of squad selections, why put yourself through it. Arsenal don't exactly look like they will smash loads a goals past City.

I'd consider taking a hit to bring in Auba, but that's about it. My problem is that I don't wanna change any my existing team to accommodate him
Ings, Jimenez or DCL would have to make way and either mane or Salah. But good luck to the people who do it and pays off them.

If you own Mane Salah and KdB, chances are you don't have Auba. How are you planning to get Auba in that case, or you ignoring?

I can’t afford the team I want (with Pope, Pepe and Doucoure/Sarr immediately) so
    1.Get Pepe for next 2
2.Then do Button Pepe-> Pope Richarlison with 2ft
    3. Richarlison-> Fernandes for gw32

If that goes ahead then my WC will be
    McCarthy button
Taa - Taylor – Cathcart – Vvd– Doherty
    Salah – KDB – Pepe - Saka - Doucoure
    Auba – Jota - DCL
