FPL Double Gameweek 29 confirmed for Manchester City and Arsenal

Arsenal and Manchester City are set for two fixtures in the upcoming Double Gameweek 29.

The two sides will meet on the evening of Wednesday, March 11 at the Etihad Stadium.

That means Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta’s men each have the following fixtures in the Double Gameweek:

  • Manchester United v Manchester City
  • Manchester City v Arsenal
  • Arsenal v West Ham United
  • Manchester City v Arsenal

It may be short notice for Fantasy Premier League managers, with just a few days until the next deadline, but this announcement is sure to send shockwaves through the community.

Still the top-scoring Fantasy asset this season, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) was among the three most-sold assets for Blank Gameweek 28 losing 330,000+ owners ahead of last week’s Friday night deadline.

Meanwhile, no player was transferred out by more managers than Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) for Blank Gameweek 28. Despite an EFL Cup final knock, Guardiola has confirmed the striker is fit and available for the next round of action.

These decisions may have been, in part, influenced by a probable lack of Blank Gameweek 31 fixture. But this Double Gameweek 29 announcement has thrown something of a spanner into the works for Fantasy managers hoping to spend the next few weeks preparing their teams for Blank Gameweek 31.

As ever, Fantasy managers may also be scratching their heads when it comes to assessing which Manchester City assets are likely to start both matches of a Double Gameweek.

Gameweeks 19 to 27

As you can see from the table above, De Bruyne is the only player to have started each of the last 10 matches for Manchester City.

Ederson (£6.0m) probably would have done the same were it not for his Gameweek 19 red card at Wolves but interest in his signature is not expected to be too high for this Double Gameweek.

As it is pitting Manchester City against their local rivals and Arsenal, both teams boasting revitalised attacks in recent weeks, clean sheet potential across the two matches is not too high.

Aguero has started on seven occasions, almost certainly sowing enough doubt to cast aspersions on his viability for Double Gameweek 29.

However, the eight starts and 673 minutes for Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m), as well as three goals and four assists during this period, could make him a powerful differential once again.

Is it time to invest in Arsenal assets after Gameweek 28? 6

However, Fantasy managers may find it easier to consider Arsenal options, especially as their first fixture of Double Gameweek 29 sees them host an obliging West Ham defence.

The Hammers have conceded a total of nine across their last three away trips, an average of three per game. Meanwhile, Manchester City have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight home matches.

That could open the door into Fantasy teams for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m).

The striker has already been involved in 20 goals this season and is behind Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) by just five points in the hunt to be the top-scoring FPL forward this season.

Gameweeks 19 to 27

When we consider the minutes played by Arsenal assets over the last 10 matches, we see that Aubameyang only missed two, the punishment for his Gameweek 22 red card.

Meanwhile, Pépé has been in fantastic form recently, and enough to ease any concerns about just six starts since Gameweek 18.

Despite the handicap of fewer minutes in the selected period, Pépé’s goal tally is beaten only by Aubameyang among Arsenal players, while none of his colleagues has managed more assists than his three.

With a trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30, Arsenal attackers may also have more long-term appeal than Manchester City counterparts considering it’s Burnley up next for Guardiola’s men who, unlike the Gunners, still have European commitments to consider.

Also, if you have already voted in the latest captain poll, fear not. We are resetting the results so that you can now cast your lot once again, now that we have more up-to-date information.

So we are 10 games away to the end of the season. A nice number to work a few things out.
    Using the WC early:
The biggest plus in using the WC rather than GW36 being the other extreme is the long term benefit. I just pressed the button and I am at peace with that. I see good reason if you have chips left to delay things but i don't have any. My aims are different to most on this site.
The reason I made the move was to do surgery on my team. Players like Sidibe, Soy, Aurier, O'Connell, Traore, Barnes and Ings have all gone and I am happy with that. I can also play 4 DGW players this week and still have 10 for GW31.
My first thought was damage control in GW31. It was relatively simple with Pool playing but getting rid of the fodder mentioned above and getting a financial balance added up to a good move.
Moving forward to GW34 and beyond I was able to plan easy GW's to this point. More importantly, my DGW players all have good fixtures and I should build up to a DGW majority.
I have sacrificed in certain areas but the single GW players that remain I would not want to move on anyway. If Pool get knocked out of the CL the all the better because it will reduce rotation. My other players will have something to play for right to the death.
Pepe seems to be a popular pick this week, something I could not do. Do I really need him? not really.
As the season winds up, there will be some rotation. What real gain can one expect in a DGW? The crowded fixture list may dent people's hopes. I much prefer to have a decent bench which is easy to get atm. If a player like TAA gets rested, I have a replacement with a good fixture. My only punts are Alonso and Sarr. It may go wrong but if the formation changes at Chelsea Alonso is easy to move out.

    In conclusion
Pope and Henderson: Good rotation with Hendo having one DGW and Pope having a good GW31 fixture.
TAA and Doherty: I really don't mind keeping these to season end no matter no DGW's
Sais, Taylor and Alonso: plenty of options to play. Sais and Taylor could be moved on to DGW alternatives.
Salah, KDB, Mahrez, Sarr and Saka: Mahrez will go to Bruno in GW32. The rest i am confident can stay.
Auba, Jimmi, DCL: All flavors of the month. Auba I can carry through 31, The others will be upgraded if anything looks good.
Here is hoping for few injuries and I hope people read the waffle.
    Give me alternative strategies.

If i hit the wc button, my team will be very similar to this, maybe prefer Patricio and don't fancy Mahrez but will see...

      Nice

Expect to end up with something very similar come 33. Will have Sarr for Saka and Jota up top for the inevitable Mahrez misses.

Also considering Ederson ahead of Hendo

Seeing the ones you got rid, this makes all sense, But as I guess you already have a few of players on wc, couldn't the same be achieved with FT's up to GW31? WC'ing in GW32/33 should give an advantage for GW34 BB at least

Unless I'm shoehorning in punts, the only players that I'd really want for this DGW are KdB, Auba and Pepe, maybe Kun too but you'd have to hope he plays minimum 90 mins across the two games including starting the Arsenal one although he has a great record at OT. Just not sure it's worth using WC/FH on.

Getting Auba in would cost me now -8 and I would have to ditch Salah, Mane or Bruno (and Ings). Not ideal to go without Auba, but I guess I will just have hide behind a big sofa.

Appreciate that Bellerin has the extra game, but Alonso’s stats are far superior.

For someone who has all the chips left, is the best move now:
29: Wildcard to build strongest team possible (with Arsenal and City assets for DGW)
31: Free hit to allow for all the blank teams
34: Triple captain/ Bench boost for potential DGWs
37: Triple captain/ Bench boosy for potential DGWs

Would anyone play it any differently? Playing the WC now allows me maximum time with the best team possible, and plenty of gameweeks to bring in potential DGW players for 34 & 37... but maybe it's best to save it...
