Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 29?

The transformation of Gameweek 29 into a Double Gameweek has added further complication to the latest captaincy debate.

With the focus previously on Liverpool, Fantasy Premier League managers have been forced to consider Arsenal and Manchester City options for the armband with each side playing twice.

We’ve got over the individual statistics for key candidates in recent weeks and compared them against the defences of their upcoming opponents to find the out who the best option is.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season or a monthly package can access it in full.

Captain Poll

The original Gameweek 29 captain poll

We effectively ran two captain polls ahead of Gameweek 29 as the Double prefix was not added until late on Tuesday night.

As you can see from the table above, it was Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) who took a comfortable lead when this was a simple single Gameweek, having delivered in each of his last four home matches in a row.

Sadio Mané (£12.4m) was also up there in third place with Bournemouth coming to Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) completing the Liverpool contingent in the top-five, which was rounded off by Jamie Vardy (£9.8m).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.0m) fixture against West Ham was good enough for him to accrue 25.6% and claim second place, with three goals in his last two at home.

The new Double Gameweek 29 poll

However, the addition of Arsenal and Manchester City’s midweek meeting at the Etihad Stadium has proved enough to completely change the dynamic of the Double Gameweek 29 captaincy debate.

As you can see, Aubameyang has now stolen top spot, increasing his share by 24.2 percentage points now that he will be playing twice.

There was a similar boost for Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) as he rose from 1.8% backing to 20.1% and second place – although the Belgian is now an injury doubt.

Those shifts saw Salah drop to third place with a still-respectable 11.9% backing for the armband, while Alexander-Arnold remained stable in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Mané and Vardy dropped out as differential options with Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) and Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) taking their place but with no more than 3% support each.

Would you take -4 and bench boost this squad? WC already used and will probably FH in main DGW 37. Looking at Ben Crellin’s excellent analysis sounds like week 34 basically will be a single week with fixtures staggered

    TAA Boly Stevens

Thanks. Yes could get Aubameyang and Sarr and play front 7 ( not bench boosting) of

        Salah Mané Sarr Barnes
        Aubameyang (c) Ings Jiménez

Do you think this better option

Not an ideal bb because of Southampton vs Newcastle. Not terrible though. Maybe there could be a better single game week for it though

Is the FH31, WC32/36, BB37 is the best strategy for people, who already used their TC chip?

I think so. WC 32 could give you good balanced squad till the end of the season + u can be ready for DGW'S in 34 and 37 with transfers. Don't see why so many people thinks that FH34 is an option. Can anyone explain why FH34 is better than FH31?

Depends on how many gw31 players you have currently, I have 4 so will be using FH in 31, some may have more therefore using FH in a double

Some people are already well set for 31 with 3 Pool, 3 Wolves a Pope etc...

Not saying to use it 34 but maybe in 37 and a BB33 or something...

So GW34 matches that could possibly be off:-

Crystal Palace Vs Chelsea if Chelsea beat Leicester
Arsenal Vs Leicester if Arsenal beat Sheffield or Leicester beat Chelsea
Man City Vs Newcastle is 100% off
Watford Vs Norwich if Norwich beat United/Derby
Villa Vs United if United beat Derby and then Norwich
Sheffield United Vs Wolves if Sheffield beat Arsenal

so at most there could be 4 matches off maybe only 3 matches off!

Am I right to assume that the ones who do get the games rearranged will have a DGW in GW 37 and then anyone who doesn't get one cancelled will have the DGW in 34?

    1. Rainer
      • 7 Years

Some of the cancelled games could just be moved to later that midweek.

From what I’ve read GW34 may only have around 4 teams with a DGW, plus a few singles and even blanks! Does feel more suited to a ‘free hit’ week. GW37 is looking more like the larger DGW. I’m personally still not convinced holding a WC until around GW35/36 makes the best use of it. Seems very tricky this season.

Wildcarding now could be beneficial if gw 34 turns out to be close to a regular game week. Then the bb has to be played in a single game week but that isn't all that bad

So you have 6 players who play in 31.
If it were my team I’d be building towards getting as many players out in 31 without using FH.

Auba and KdB is good enough for this week.

FH in one of the future doubles.

        That’s my advice anyway.

There will be DGWs later this season.

Martial and Lundstram to Sarr and Doherty possible?

Anyone think this is worth a go?

    Martial + Traore -> Mahrez + Rodri (-4)

Save. Team looks just fine. I would be tempted to play Traore over Fleck though

Thinking same- if KDB declared fit would rather him and Ings this week but if Pep is kind enough to confirm KDB out then will make moves

People saving there wildcard to go with Bench Boost it’s unlikely you will have 15 players with two games, you will keep Liverpool players for example or players with good fixtures after.

I’m really warming to the idea of wildcard this week, set up for GW31 and using free hit for one of the Double GWs. I think free transfers can easily be used to set up for bench boost in the other.

This is what I'm seriously contemplating. Currently sitting with 6 for BGW 31 so it also removes any potential hits.

Which week do you think suits the BB and FH better?

Exact same as me! And only 2 FT between now and then.

We won’t have to decide to after 31 and will have a better idea!

You don’t have to have 15dgw players for BB though. No harm in having 10-12 and sgw players with a very good fixture

This. Usually far better that way than filling up 15 spots partially with DGW dross!

Exactly, and I think it should be easily possible to get this using transfers and 1 or 2 hits, no need to save wildcard!

If gw 34 is close to a regular game week then it's better to play the FH in gw 37 and BB in a single game week.

Impossible to decide for definite until we know exact fixtures

True but I think that Ben Crellin is right again which would mean that only 0-4 teams play 2 games in gw 34

              https://mobile.twitter.com/bencrellin

He made some spreadsheets of different scenarios and in all the scenarios gw 34 is close to regular. He obviously could be wrong

Looking at doing Fernandes & Ings -> Sarr & Auba for a -4. Not planning on doing FH for BGW31.

    G2G?

    McCarthy

    TAA Robbo Stevens

    Salah KDB Sarr Ayoze

    Auba (c) Jimmy DCL

    Button Boly Cantwell Rico

If Bruno plays 90 tonight should we be concerned at all for his minutes on Sunday vs MCI?

Moving him to Sarr is one of my GW31 prep moves but would be for a -4 if this week.
