Aubameyang has work to do at Man City after West Ham blank

Arsenal 1-0 West Ham United

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m)
  • Assists: Mesut Özil (£7.2m)
  • Bonus Points: Bernd Leno x3 (£5.0m), Lacazette x2, David Luiz x1 (£5.7m)

West Ham contrived to lose a match they really could have won as Arsenal’s most popular double Gameweek picks blanked.

David Moyes’ side should have secured at least a point from their trip to The Emirates, out-shooting their hosts 14 to nine and hitting the target six times to Arsenal’s two.

But the Hammers found home keeper Bernd Leno (£5.0m) in fine form, the German making six saves on his way to the maximum bonus point award and his first double-digit haul of the season.

Leno now has three clean sheets from his last four starts and five since Mikel Arteta took over as coach in Gameweek 21. He’d managed just two all season before that – a clear sign that Arsenal’s defensive assets are finally well worth a look.

David Luiz (£5.7m) joined Leno in the bonus point mix, but neither player is owned by more than 5.5% of FPL managers.

Indeed, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m and 27.8%) enjoys double-figure ownership, and the striker was the second-most captained player of Gameweek 29, with 1.1 million managers handing him the armband.

The Gabon international promptly blanked against the Hammers, managing just one off-target effort in a limp display, although that lack of attacking bite was the story of the day for all of the Gunners’ assets.

Their winning goal came from substitute Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m), who scored from close range courtesy of an assist from Mesut Özil (£7.2m). The strike was initially ruled out for offside, only for VAR to overturn the decision after a lengthy delay.

It was the Frenchman’s second goal in three Gameweeks. He’s also provided an assist in that time, which is excellent work seeing as he’s been given just 36 minutes of action and didn’t feature at all last time out.

Özil, meanwhile, has started all three of those Gameweeks and has a goal and an assist to show for his work.

Neither player, however, is exactly popular in FPL, with Lacazette owned by 2.1% and the German just 1.5%.

West Ham assets are also flying under the radar, although they have the lack of double matches in this Gameweek to explain their current shortage of owners.

Their fixtures are also another strong reason for that, with Wolves, Spurs and Chelsea to come over the next three Gameweeks, even if that Tottenham match is one of only four taking place in Gameweek 31.

But the Hammers’ recent form is not so bad, involving an unlucky loss to Liverpool, an emphatic victory over Southampton and now this near-miss at Arsenal.

Michail Antonio (£6.9m) was the stand-out performer against Southampton, with a goal and an assist, but he fluffed his lines today, missing good chances either side of half-time and conspiring with Sebastien Haller (£6.8m) to blow another excellent opportunity as West Ham’s swift counter-attacks troubled Arsenal throughout the match.

That didn’t stop Moyes singing Antonio’s praises.

“He gives us so much and offers us so much. He has improved, his fitness levels are up, his game is improving.” – David Moyes

Haller forced Leno into one fine save and the keeper did even better to divert an early Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) onto the post.

The goal aside, Arsenal’s efforts were much more sporadic, with the best effort a Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£4.8m) header, from an Aubameyang cross, that came off the bar.

Small wonder that Moyes was happier with the display than the result.

“I told them they played really well. We did against Liverpool and Southampton, but it’s only three points from three games. I’d rather play not so well and win the game, but you couldn’t fault the players.” – David Moyes

It will take more than that – and the shift to kinder fixtures that occurs in Gameweek 33 – to tempt Fantasy managers into investment in West Ham players bar, presumably, a Free Hit selection for Gameweek 31.

Antonio would surely feature for many in that scenario, with Haller, the lively Bowen and Pablo Fornals (£6.0m), who topped the attempts chart at Arsenal with four, also worth a look.

Midfielder Robert Snodgrass (£5.3m) is another that might be considered, although he’s not started a match since Gameweek 27.

A defence that hasn’t kept a clean sheet for nine matches is considerably less appealing, however.

The Gunners still have a second match, against Manchester City, to bring in some points for those who took a punt on their stars this week.

But a blank Gameweek 31 means further interest in their players is unlikely to kick until they’re back in action, against Norwich, at the start of April.

Arsenal under Arteta are clearly heading in the right direction. They’ve lost just once in the league since he took over and their defensive improvement, as mentioned, is there for all to see and invest in, with today’s debutant, Pablo Mari (£4.8m), a relatively cheap option should he now hold down a regular place.

The coach was keen to talk up Mari after the match.

“He is doing well, he’s adapted really well – it is not an easy league and a central defender, in my opinion, to play in the Premier League is one of the toughest positions to play for any foreign player.” – Mikel Arteta

Attacking returns, beyond Aubameyang’s, are harder to predict, unless Lacazette is brought back into the starting XI.

Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m), who enjoyed a 133,614 surge in ownership for this week’s double, blanked against West Ham and remains a returner of big scores but many more blanks, while the budget charms of midfielder Bukayo Saka (£4.6m) are offset by his current role as left-back.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Saka, Mari, Luiz, Sokratis; Xhaka, Ceballos; Aubameyang, Özil (Bellerin 88′), Pépé (Nelson 69′); Nketiah (Lacazette 59′).

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Ngakia; Noble (Soucek 81′), Rice; Antonio, Fornals (Anderson 87′), Bowen (Snodgrass 90′); Haller.

Wildcarded to combine dgw29ers (Auba Saka Leno KDB) with bgw31ers (TAA Doherty Saiss Sarr Salah Jota Taylor) and other form players (DCL Alonso Fernandes).
Expected Leno's score for Auba but that was a nice gift.
Don't know what to expect from the gunners away to MCI, but hope DCL Alonso Fernandes and KDB-if-fit do continue their form.

“Aubameyang’s average position in this game will be of some concern to his owners and captainers”

Of equal (or even more?) concern will be his ongoing insistence in underwhelming in the “easier” looking home fixtures when he was often trusted with many armbands to get some value from that 11.0 price tag...

      Never fancied Auba.

Owned him for 4 easy games earlier in the season and he only scored once.

Think he's Hazard-esque in FPL terms. You literally have to hold him for months/the season to get his returns. Targeting 'good' fixtures doesn't really work with a team like Arsenal.

Terrific player and goalscorer, don't get me wrong.

But Arsenal as a team are unreliable and I think you have to factor that into captaincy decisions.

Agreed. The fact he's playing wide is the ultimate put-off, it's clear to see it's not his favoured position.

Auba not playing on the shoulder of last defender is 1/2 the threat.

Problem is not positioning, it is more down to Arsenal being in bad shape under Emery, and Arteta have implemented a style which will take some time to embed and while it is progressing it will be games like this where they don´t create that much. Partly because West ham physicality caused them trouble, and if say Kostas score on that pass from Auba the game would been very different the last hour or so.

Wholeheartedly agree re: time to embed, but Auba's positioning out wide is certainly a limiting factor. Maybe not to the whole team dynamic and playing style as he's a model pro and will do a job there, but to his own individual threat and goalscoring prowess - almost certainly.

Always does well on the eye test and with the game in 31 and that nice fixture run either side of it, he’s a good option - particularly with many planning exit routes from liverpool’s defence now that Allison is gone again

But a lot of folks bought after his 6-6-10-12, rather than before - and Saïss & Boly will both gets baps & attacking returns so lots of choice there in the Wolves defence atm

        Good analogy.
I’d say if you’ve got the money in the bank then you might as well get Doherty, but probably better ways to spend it than having him instead of Boly/Saiss

      last week he was!

but i guess not, as they got the same amount of points if cs and saiss is better in bps system. I love to own defenders who are playing almost as attackers, went with pereira over soyuncu earlier in season and now went doherty over boly/saiss. i have build up a proper tv so feels like i can afford it but i see that sometimes i wish i had those 1.7 more to spend-)

10, 12 and 6 points is not bad though in 3 weeks for a 6.1 defender.

Didn't get a response on the last thread and I'm kind of stuck. Here's my squad, no FH in 31:

    Leno Krul
    TAA* Doherty* Saiss* Cathcart* Taylor*
    Salah* KDB Bruno Sarr* Saka
    Auba Jota* DCL

2 FTs between now and 31. I'm wondering - is Auba out for a -4 worth it?
(Leno, Saka, Auba -> Pope, Alli/Bergwijn, Wood)

Alternatively I'll have to settle for Leno and Saka -> Pope and Noble.

      five defenders, wow.

not sold on selling auba, and leno could be a shrewd diffs in the late stage of season. can you do the same move with krul?

hm, i think i might would want one lIv player more in that week?

if a wilcard intact and Alisson out then a one week punt on Adrian? I know, he is not that good but palace is done for the season and not scoring much.

you are kind of set up nicely for 31 but also 5 defenders which means you are realiant upon cs in most games.

I already have my transfers planned for this week. I will be doing 2 transfers this week and max two the following week to have at least 6 for GW31.

Any suggestions though what to do with my team I am getting back after FH29?

    Henderson McCarthy
    TAA VVD Dunk Stephens Lascelles
    Salah Fernandes Richarlson Perez Cantwell
    Ings Vardy Jimenez

Really? 14 teams played yesterday, 9 goals scored in total. 6 clean sheets.

I think Liverpool, Burnley and Wolves all have a very good chance of clean sheets in 31.

But if you don’t think so, then look at Sarr, Deeney, Jota, Ayew, Antonio and maybe Lucas?

          1. Laporte is out and against two teams who could easily score, not great CS potential
          2. He gets very few save and bonus points
          3. City don't concede that many penalties
          4. Mahrez, Salah and Vardy are better pics in your team

          Odd.

Wrong Palace attacker imo - lot to be said for Ayew as first bench enabler. Just one point off DCL and right up there on form - let alone season form where he’s in his own category as a forward

I’m guessing you have Bruno. Rich is well up on my wish list.

But increasingly looking at Martial - there’s a very fancy fixture turn on its way and he’s ever so consistent as an FPL asset. Too pricy? That’s where Ayew works in my book

      2. HamezMace
        • 9 Years

Ayew is actually a very solid pick.

Bit of both - but mostly we’re set up more negatively thus season. Think the absence of Townsend on the other side hurts quite a bit

But tbh he wasn’t all that last season either. He only really caught fire when Bats became his regular foil.

I was expecting around ten goals from him this season, thought that was good value for a 7m midfield. Talisman theory and all that. But he’s been a bit of a let down really.

Guessing it’s his last season at Palace, hopefully now you’re safe, Roy will take off the hand brake a little.

Alli on pens (and scoring it) with Son and Kane still out for a while is an interesting one. Plus the fact he's playing OOP right now. Also playing for his England place.

Spurs will likely go out of the CL in midweek, which *should* mean their motivation for top 4 is high.

Also, they have decent-ish fixtures after GW 31 for those not free hitting in GW 31 and saving their WC for 35/36.

Alli looking like the only Spurs mid worth owning, IMO.

    1. BNMC

Alli has been such a troll for me this season.

I bought him for Son straight after he was suspended vs. Chelsea. I was able to pick up a few of his returns (8 vs BHA, 13 vs NOR), but that was it. Those were the only points he got. Ultimately his bust-up with Mourinho prompted me to sell him for Bruno and although Bruno has been good, Alli now has 3 attacking returns since I sold him.

Spurs' likely exit from the CL (as well as FA Cup last week) may do their league form a lot good.

Players will have more rest and just be focussed on top 4.

Very good point re. his price.

I just think there's such a lack of midfield options in general that he's probably worth a punt while playing OOP and on pens. He plays in GW 31 (and has a good fixture), he's a streaky kind of player, and he'd fit quite nicely into my set up for 31 and after.

What would the cleanie % be for GW31?

Liverpool have lost Alisson, Watford have goals in them. Wolves are solid at the moment so maybe cleanies will come from their assets?

For me attacking players over bringing in attackles return defensive assets and a Gk for hits.

Good question. Best guess is Burnley.

So few fixtures reduced odds of the random cs. Palace do tend to do well - often very well - at Anfield but the dynamic this year is different of course. You’d logically back a Liverpool cs but ....
