Who I’m considering as my FPL replacement for out-of-form Danny Ings

With some big Gameweeks on the horizon, I’ve got some big decisions to make about chips and my budget forwards.

Hopefully, they will prove less stressful than the ones I had to consider over the weekend.

It’s Saturday morning, minutes before the Gameweek 29 deadline, and I’ve yet to make my transfers. Clearly the Double Gameweek was a big draw for me.

I wanted Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) due to his goal-scoring pedigree but to get him I had to take some hits.

With questions over Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) starting I was prepared to take a risk and sell him.

I decided to take out the in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.4m) for Aubameyang but justified the move by still having Richarlison (£8.3m) as my Everton attacker.

I wanted some type of City cover, so Phil Foden (£5.1m) came to the fore as my plucky differential, with talk of him starting the Manchester City derby. That’s where I should have stopped.

But for some reason, I convinced myself that Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) was going to roll over West Ham and Manchester City, so signed him in place of Anthony Martial (£7.9m).

Alas, none of those transfers paid off over the weekend and I scored under the average which always guarantees a red arrow. I now need to hope that Manchester City v Arsenal turns out to be a festival of goals with De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) having an off-day. Not asking for much, am I?

After recording four green arrows in a row, my FPL team seemed to be making the right kind of progress but Liverpool’s undoing against Watford was an unwanted fork in the road.

Ominous comments from Guardiola after City flop in Double Gameweek opener

Unfortunately, I tried to remedy that by investing in Double Gameweek 29 but that hasn’t gone to plan so far. I’m down 100,000+ places and really need a slice of luck to get some traction back.

On the plus side, I still have three chips in hand, the Wildcard, Free Hit and Bench Boost.

With another Blank Gameweek and at least one more Double Gameweek this season, I’m still hopeful for a much-needed lift.

As tempting as it may be, my initial thoughts on Blank Gameweek 31 is to refrain from using the Free Hit.

With my current squad, I have seven potential players who have a fixture that week and using my upcoming transfers I can get up to nine potential starters. After that, I can use my moves for Blank Gameweek 31 itself to bump my numbers up to 11 active players.

The only downside is that I would be following my -8 hit with two consecutive -4 hits. But once the final set of Double Gameweeks are announced I will be better placed to use my remaining chips.

After some blistering form between Gameweek 12 and Gameweek 22, Danny Ings (£7.1m) has recently struggled in front of goal. In fact, he’s only netted one league in his last seven Premier League appearances which is unacceptable, even for a so-called budget striker.

I also find it concerning that Ings has failed to register attacking returns against the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle United.

It might seem foolish selling him before Southampton’s trip to Norwich, but that’s what I intend to do. If I do sell Ings (and with Blank Gameweek 31 also in mind), my options are fairly limited, but in that price range, three players are on my shortlist – Jordan Ayew (£5.1m), Diogo Jota (£6.4m) and Troy Deeney (£6.2m).

All three have a similar number of attacking returns and minutes per point despite their total playing time since Gameweek 1 being significantly different.

Of note, Jota has scored 30 of his points in the past three Gameweeks, despite his poor conversion rate as a whole throughout the season.

Ayew has also been an inconsistent performer but has come back on the radar with two goals and an assist since Gameweek 27.

As for Deeney, with the exception of the match against Liverpool, his form of late hasn’t been great but he’s worth considering as Watford are fighting for survival and he is their main attacking output.

I already have Raul Jiménez (£8.0m) but I’m tempted to double and get Jota purely on Wolves’ generous fixture run, in comparison to Crystal Palace and Watford over the next two Gameweeks.

Metrics

With it still being mathematically possible for Liverpool to wrap up the Premier League in Gameweek 30, Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) seems like a no-nonsense captain pick.

The fact they are playing Everton in the Merseyside derby also gives the occasion an extra edge. If I also had Sadio Mané (£12.4m), I probably would have considered captaining him too.

Having said that, one of the hang-ups of Double Gameweek 29 is that I will have Aubameyang still at hand and he could be a good armband shout against Brighton.

    Grealish to:
    A) Sarr
    B) Mount
    C) Buendia

    Ings to:
    1) Pukki (great home fixtures)
    2) Giroud

    !) Both (-4)
?) Only do 1 of them

Really fancy a Pukki punt I think. But Giroud looks equally tempting with Abraham out.

      A?

I would go A) Grealish to Sarr

As for Ings, I'm keeping him one more week vs. Norwich and then transferring him--I don't think it's worth the hit to get Pukki

Just realised that you have three WOL already - duh. Nice to have options - you can put out a decent team in 31. I wouldn't FH as you'll have most of the big names anyway, Mane apart. If one of the minor players gets a cricket score then the ownership is likely to be very low. Have you started looking at the oppo's teams yet?

John McGinn back in training could be a huge boost for Villa and more importantly for Grealish's points potential. With a possibility of DGW between GW33-GW35 I'm thinking holding on could be a great differential for owners.

Smith on McGinn- “He is certainly getting to where we want him to be and he feels really good, which is the important thing. He’ll be pushing me for Chelsea, that’s for sure.”

Grealish owners should have got rid before GW28. Villa are in freefall and if McGinn gives them a boost then wait for McGinn to get onto the pitch before getting Grealish back. It's like holding onto Vardy for 10 weeks waiting for Ndidi to return. He did, eventually, but how many points were lost in the process

Grealish has only blanked 2 GWs in a row, unlike Vardy. Villa have everything to play for and with their atrocious defending there will be more pressure to outscore the opponent.

Early thoughts on the captaincy? Joe and David seem to think Bruno Fernandes is the standout option. I can certainly see the appeal but as bad as Spurs have been surely Mourinho is just going to park a big old bus against his former team.

Just watched the captaincy video and the points were really off imo. So much talk of Everton's low xGc meaning their defence is "not that bad" - what it really means, and it's obvious to anyone who's watched the games - is that Pickford is crap! This imo is why Salah is a good option this week despite his away record, because he shoots on sight and if he gets enough shots on target you can almost guarantee Pickford spills one. Likewise the Fernandes point, he's a great player of course but saying Spurs are whipping boys is just plain wrong, their stats may be rubbish but when was the last time Spurs were genuinely beaten by a large scoreline in the league? With Bergwijn injured as well Mourinho will park every single one of his buses to avoid a spanking against a former club, I'd say United have a greater chance of getting a CS than they do a goal

I can't see past a Liverpool player to be honest. Everton looked awful on Sunday, and Liverpool are motivated and may have the chance to win the league there. Also Sidibe looked very suspect defensively which allowed Pedro to have a field day, so Mane could do too as he plays on the left also.

I agree with Joe and David that Spurs look poor defensively and United look better too, but this Spurs did beat City 2-0 themselves just a few weeks ago. Also Fernandes has been superb of course, but he has relied so far on set pieces for attacking returns, he hasn't got into the box too much to shoot yet.

You also need to bear in mind Joe says a lot of things without ever following through on them. In the last couple of months he's mentioned going "Choudhury deep" in his team and also was all set on bringing in Aaron Cresswell for the DGW. Of course it was all bluster and he did neither of these things, so I wouldn't be surprised to see his armband on Salah come Saturday 😉

    A) Alonso (avl) - Villa are so poor but he has been reigned back somewhat in a back 4
    B) Salah (eve) - safety in numbers and Everton were shocking on Sunday
    C) Fernandes (tot) - form player with multiple routes to points against a Mourinho bus with no brakes

    Hi all

I plan to FH in 31 and current team for next week is below.

Feel I have a decent spread of players for the DGW's but interested in any opinions on who else you think is worth considering over the next few weeks. (I think Ryan will be next to go). Cheers!

    Ryan
    TAA - Alonso - Doherty
    Salah - KDB - Fernandes - Barnes - Cantwell
    Auba - Jota

    Button / DCL - Lascelles - O'Connell

Nice team. Can't really see anywhere to obviously improve in your situation. I may be tempted by an O'Connell to Lundstram punt, but letting the transfer fizzle is the prudent play.

      Thanks.

Yes Lund could be an option. Might also consider a punt on Giroud if he holds down a place, not sure beyond that tbh.

Don't think I've ever burned a transfer before, ha.

With 1FT and £0.8itb it's difficult to look at any decent surgery, but somehow need to deal with likes of Maupay, Grealish, Maddison, Cantwell 🙁

    Leno McCarthy
    TAA Robertson Saiss Fernandez Taylor
    Salah Maddison Cantwell KDB Grealish
    Ings Vardy Maupay

Maybe just Grealish>Dendoncker and upgrade either Maddison or Maupay following GW

I'd quite like to save my FH for GW38 for a final day bonanza

      GW38 is always interesting.

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly but always feels like we get a nod from managers about under the radar picks that will get some minutes, or a start.

Huge potential for differentials (and of course getting it all wrong!).

Could go with FH 37 with the back up being GW38 FH if it's not needed in 37.

Unless you have all your chips left of course

Might do this too depending on how GW34 looks.

It could work quite well, my only concern would be that some teams with nothing to play for might give some fringe players a run out in the final game of the season.

Could be a shrewd pick for 31 instead of Sarr/Deeney/ etc,

Is Grealish (who looked awful and unmotivated last night) to Antonio a good move?

No FH in 31 so need to get my team in shape. Already have 3 Liverpool, 3 Wolves and Sarr. Need a GW 31 midfielder and its slim pickings (especially as i cant get to Alli)

I am probably going with 3 LFC and 3 Wolves.

Not sure taking hits on the rest of them are worth it unless I had a WC in my back pocket to transfer out Watford, WHU and Spurs for free.

FH in such a small GW when you will have Sarr vs Pope and Taylor, Wood vs Watford defence etc.

      That is just me.

I like that one of the replacement options is someone I already have.

Glad to see also that KdB is maybe out since I think 6 & double whatever Foden gets is likely better than anything he can manage. Martinelli staying away is then worth 12... Winning through bad planning! Victory!

Any thoughts on possible moves here?

Bit boxed in with Perez and Traore. One potential move was Perez > McNeil allowing VVD + KDB > Doherty + Mane but KDB's drop has scuppered that. Doucoure would enable that but not really sure about that

WC used, 2 frees, 1.4m ITB. Intending to keep my FH

I actually shipped Saiss to Taylor last week as I was maxed out on Wolves
I'd prefer Doherty tbh but those transfers in isolation look decent

I'm contemplating selling KDB to bring in a mid that plays in 31 (most likely Antonio), going Cityless for 32 (LIV at home), then using all the extra money in the bank to bring in Aguero for 33 onwards.

I feel like Aguero will want to play in the PL to compete for the golden boot, and he's a lot more explosive than someone like Auba.

    Thoughts?

I'm doing KDB to Mane to target GW33 v Villa specifically, not just for the blank. But I'd want KDB back after and if you think Aguero will do well then it's KDB will do well as well

Bruno more important. Alonso looking a little more withdrawn last couple of games in a back four. No shots vs everton

Barnes/Vardy had too much space on Villa's right side. Would prefer to bet on Alonso over Fernandes this week.
