Man City v Arsenal postponed as ‘precaution’ amid coronavirus fears

Double Gameweek 29 is officially off. That’s because Arsenal’s rearranged trip to Manchester City has been postponed amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak.

The news comes after it was revealed on Tuesday that Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis had recent contracted COVID-19.

As the Greek side were at the Emirates Stadium for a Europa League match less than two weeks ago, it has now emerged that several Arsenal squad members met Marinakis.

These players, who have not been named, are now self-isolating at home for the remainder of the 14-day period after the meeting.

Arsenal announced the news in a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“The medical advice we have received puts the risk of (these players) developing Covid-19 at extremely low. However, we are strictly following the Government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact. As a result, the players are unavailable for tonight’s match against Manchester City and the Premier League has decided the game should be postponed. The players will remain at their homes until the 14-day period expires. Four Arsenal staff – who were sitting close to Mr Marinakis during the match – will also remain at home until the 14 days are complete.” – Arsenal statement

The postponement of Wednesday night’s match means that Arsenal v Man City will need a new date once again.

It also means that Gameweek 29 has now concluded so anyone who had Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) in their starting line-up will see their first substitutes come in.

It also means those who took a hit for Arsenal players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) or Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) will have to make do with the blanks they registered against West Ham.

As things stand, Arsenal’s trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30 is still going ahead, as the self-isolating players can return to training on Friday.

“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Mr Marinakis a swift recovery and we look forward to the players and staff returning to work on Friday in preparation for our match at Brighton.” – Arsenal statement

So we should probably, Captain and vice from different teams, beware of too many players in one fixture, hold 2 transfers. Anything else we should be doing to minimise this?

Due to the coronavirus situ, I have a feeling that the postponements of fixtures will continue. Therefore, delaying transfers until just before the deadline would be sensible. Imagine if the Premiership got called off next week!!! No title for Liverpool! Oh, what a shame!

No point discussing it. You just have to look at the numbers yourself. You have to think that way more have had it and not gone to hospital. The media is controlling people with this.

There is no doubt there is hysteria, this is the 1st epi/pandemic in the twitter age, so everything is reported, wrongly or rightly, and that creates a snowball.
Supermarket shelves are low on loo roll, shop stacked s about to come around and replace them all, take a quick photo, post it online, and it creates more frenzy to panic buy.
I'm not saying there is no risk/danger with covid 19, but the media/twitter are escalating it to another level.

The impact this virus could have on FPL could be massive. It was already enough of a headache as it is working out transfer and chip strategies around the doubles and blanks. Now I really wish I had the 2nd Wildcard chip. Only have the FH and BB left.

Mine too. Plan was to field 8-9 players in GW31 and save the FH for the double. Those who still have the 2nd wildcard as well as the FH are at a huge advantage.

Of course it does. FPL is a perfect example. You are only responsible for a few set of parameters then the rest is out of your hands. Player sent off, broken leg, hits the post whatever. You can make optimal decisions and mitigate luck as much as possible... But that's it.

My view on whether luck has played a bigger part this season:

I think there have been a number of key moments this season that were luck based and they have benefitted some and hurt others significantly. Two examples:

      1. Many TC Salah or Mane back in GW 24. Mane got injured in the first game. Salah = 48 points, Mane = 3 points.

      2. Many played chips this GW and loaded up on City and Arsenal players (having carefully planned for the GW). The second game is cancelled. This has cost players a lot of points, for example a popular transfer was Vardy out for Auba (captained at the expense of Salah).

Is this any different to other seasons? No. Does luck pay a part in FPL success? Yes.

Feel completely lucky; I had KDB in but now have Barnes as first sub (yes, I know) to come on for him.

It has completely changed my gameweek.

If it wasn't down to a public health crisis I would be buzzing.

Well KDB could have easily missed both games due to his injury, this was a completely probable situation at the start of the GW

Agree totally. Luck definitely plays a part, but its not just this season.

Last season, MC DGW, many (including myself) captained Sane who played as a sub for just 1 game = 2 points

Also every season, many play their WC/BB and load up on DGWers, only for rotation/injury to kick in.

As for your point (2), with the DGW being confirmed kinda late only after GW28 was over, don't see how people could have planned carefully for this. Most people i know either FH/WC or took a -8/-12 if they wanted to load up on MC/Ars assets.

I don't really understand the protocol. So the Arsenal players have to self isolate for 14 days retrospectively? But only found this out on Tuesday? So have been walking around as normal for 12 of those 14 days and now are only self isolating for 2?

If any arsenal player get infected between today and tomorrow, the end of their 14 days, then yeah, the west ham players would need 2 weeks isolation starting from the point when they played arsenal.

If Aubameyang doesn't play this weekend...
I transferred in for Burnley (2pt). Raged to Aguero's stormy captain fail (2x2) and pen miss (0). Watched Auba get 3 in 2 (21pts). Sold Vardy (11) who braced whilst I captained Auba (2x2).

Vardy is going to bang vs Watford right?

As dedicated fantasy managers, we thrive in taking advantage of these kinds of situations to get edges over our competitors. We're starting on the back foot but by the time this is all done, I suspect the advatage gained over more casual players will be significant.

No it’s not. It does not transmit as easily. You and BUBZ are reading comments off twitter comment sections from Sharon in Cheltenham who thinks all Chinese people eat bats and saying it’s 20x more deadly and as contagious.

No one knows anything about it as it’s very new. But the WHO said it does not transmit as easily.

Also, the understanding that it only affects 'old and weak' is predominantly based on outdated data, or data which is particular to the circumstances. Older Chinese men tend to smoke more hence the death rate among them was higher. You're more likely to be at risk if you're older, but it is deadly to young people too (including our health workers).

The idea only the weak and old are seriously ill is wrong. One of the earliest cases was a 38yo guy as fit as can be in Italy. e has been in intensive care for 2 weeks. This virus is serious and can make anybody seriously ill, the likelihood is higher the older you are but to dismiss it as 'a cold' is ignorance and what means the virus will continue to spread because people dismiss it.

Cray Cheltenham going ahead, worried about all the infection coming back to Ireland. I think the Premiership should be delayed and finished in the summer when I'd imagine the virus threat will have passed.

The problem with cancelling it, is everyone has booked the days off work so will just go to the pub. And arguably it will spread a lot easier in a pub than in an open air event..

the UK government is currently in talks with BT and Sky to stop the showing of sporting events in pubs as they are worried if matches are played behind closed doors people will go to the pubs to watch. And yes there are over 60,000 pubs in England.
