Man City v Arsenal postponed as ‘precaution’ amid coronavirus fears

Double Gameweek 29 is officially off. That’s because Arsenal’s rearranged trip to Manchester City has been postponed amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak.

The news comes after it was revealed on Tuesday that Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis had recent contracted COVID-19.

As the Greek side were at the Emirates Stadium for a Europa League match less than two weeks ago, it has now emerged that several Arsenal squad members met Marinakis.

These players, who have not been named, are now self-isolating at home for the remainder of the 14-day period after the meeting.

Arsenal announced the news in a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“The medical advice we have received puts the risk of (these players) developing Covid-19 at extremely low. However, we are strictly following the Government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact. As a result, the players are unavailable for tonight’s match against Manchester City and the Premier League has decided the game should be postponed. The players will remain at their homes until the 14-day period expires. Four Arsenal staff – who were sitting close to Mr Marinakis during the match – will also remain at home until the 14 days are complete.” – Arsenal statement

The postponement of Wednesday night’s match means that Arsenal v Man City will need a new date once again.

It also means that Gameweek 29 has now concluded so anyone who had Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) in their starting line-up will see their first substitutes come in.

It also means those who took a hit for Arsenal players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) or Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) will have to make do with the blanks they registered against West Ham.

As things stand, Arsenal’s trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30 is still going ahead, as the self-isolating players can return to training on Friday.

“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Mr Marinakis a swift recovery and we look forward to the players and staff returning to work on Friday in preparation for our match at Brighton.” – Arsenal statement

If i confirm a trade then use my free hit, will it revert back to the team with the trade or without the trade?

Read some strange comments here today - understandable regarding fpl and the dgw cancellation.
But I can't quite grasp why there are a few who think it's actually good that a significant proportion of the population might be killed by a virus and that we should be happy that the weakest in society are fair game.
Get a grip. We are better than that.

I think what is annoying people is that football is far from the biggest factor or risk of spreading the virus.

It's airports, the transport network and many, many things before football.

So until the aforementioned take action, why should football take action first despite our government, who won by a massive margin, not issuing any serious warning.

        Yeah exactly this.

People want football, Cheltenham etc cancelled, whilst hundreds of thousands are travelling through airports going all around the world every day.

Football games won't transmit the virus anywhere near to close proximity of flights, airports, trains etc.

I'm more afraid of having no choice and catching the virus using the London Underground 10 times a week than I am going to a football game..out of my own choice.

Should we close all restaurants, bars, cinemas, public transport, schools, shops etc?

Thousands of businesses are about to go bankrupt if we go to that extreme level.

"give me a minute to wash my hands, then I will type the answer..."
Lol! The best post this morning by a mile!

If you had FH and WC chips left, is there any point using FH chip on GW31? Rationale:
    The games may get postponed.
Other rivals above me (2) have used up all their chips and have roughly a 25 pt lead.
Using the FH in a later double game week is effectively a WC.

These fixtures getting called off last minute will be my Achilles heel.

Well disregarding what your personal views on this decision are, from a game perspective I think it changes the level playing field. I'm not terribly affected, no KDB will mean Williams points, but for a huge number of people it's really unfair and clearly taints the integrity of the table.

The only fair and reasonable thing to do would be revert all squads prior to GW29 reverting all subs and counting the points as everyone had made zero transfers.

If Arsenal had hockeyed West Ham 7-0 with Auba scoring 4 there would be a distinct lack of desire for any change to current game status

As it stands - and never say never of course - 10 fixtures out of a planned 11 went ahead

Those who went balls deep with FH or WC this week rather than a DGW or even BGW31 took a risk, and the 100-1 or 1000-1 shot of a game being rescheduled unfortunately materialised

Would they refund hits as well for example, or FTs that were spent on players who didn’t play etc

This is more a case of tough titties than the logistical nightmare of handing back chips & autosubs etc

I think thats a tad different, Mane got injured. Players getting injured is part of the game of football. Its really bad luck, but part of it. In this case, several players made several transfers, team changes, played chips, etc because there was a DGW that got cancelled hours before kick off with absolutely no precedent even regarding this outbreak.

If we use Maximus analogy, if you had a bet down on this game, do you think the bookies would return your money or not? Of course they would.

I agree, probably not possible a "everyone´s happy" solution, but there´s no doubt in my mind that a huge chunk of payers in this game just got mugged.

And if the game was called off a few hours beforehand due to waterlogged pitch / torrential rain / heavy snow?

It happens. Just because this is the first time it's a worldwide medically related postponement (which is bigger than football imho), doesn't change the fact that luck plays a hand and some benefit, some don't. Live with it.

FYI i get Grealish's 2 points off the bench. A lot of my ML rivals get Lundy's 12 or somebody else's 6-8 points. On the other hand some also get 1 pointers off the bench. But that's how it goes.

There is a precedent though a few years back all but a couple of games got postponed due to weather it was total carnage.

If it’s not pre written into the rules you can’t just make it up now. The bookies say they will refund these events. What happens with what people would have done if there wasn’t a dgw? Maybe they would have still sold vardy but for someone other than Auba and you want to give them vardy back? What you are asking for would be unfair and I think you’re probably seeing it this way because on this occasion it was bad for you.

I had 2 DGW players and Auba C it was bad for me but expecting fpl to change the rules to make it better is ridiculous

And people will still probably get jammy Lundstram autosub points.

Given how incredibly slow updating is, I'm not sure if the software could even handle anything more than 38

    (C) Auba and ignored all gut instincts telling me to sell KDB for Bruno.

My reward...up into the top 750. Won't even question that luck, will simply take my points and go.

I’m done with this season. ML rival has KDB captain, the single most dumbest decision ever. Now he’s got away with it with Mane VC! To make it worse I have Auba captain. Rage quitting.

How is KDB captain a dumb choice?
Even if he plays one game, he still has the potential to do very well. Last time KDB played Arsenal, he got 19 points

Thinking ahead to GW 31, should I transfer out Auba now? Only brought him in with GW 29 in mind.

    Henderson
    TAA - Doherty - Stephens
    Traoré - KDB - Fernandes - Salah
    Jiménez - Ings - Aubameyang
    (McCarthy - Stevens - Fernández - Hayden)

Play Brighton and Norwich either side of 31 so its risky if they play.

I know. Don't have much confidence in Arsenal and their season run-in though, and three strikers for 31 would've been ideal.

When does the Corona Virus turn the fantasy football game of skill into a lottery?

Just wondering when it stops making sense to check stats, read opinions, calculate RMT scores and plan chip strategies....

One player or administrator can randomly contract the virus, effectively postponing games and closing stadiums - which I agree with, but it's making me question if "playing the game" is actually worth it at the moment......

It already was a lottery. Events like Chelsea beating Everton 4-0 out of nowhere after weeks of awfulness, or Watford 3 Liverpool 0 are completely unfathomable. And we didn't even need a virus for those!

The skill you talk of is still subject to luck even without a virus. You can do all the planning and study all the form and fixtures you want, yet players can perform against expectations, managers can throw unexpected spanners etc

The introduction of the chips a few seasons back jacked up the variance levels in the game significantly (look at the finishes the likes of Mark Sutherns, Ville Ronka, Jay Egdorff etc have endured in the last 3-4 years)

There was already an element of variance in the game, including captaincy, before the chips - but skeg they were intriduced they unfortunately made the game even more about luck and less about management than the "pre-chip" years

Good management will still rise to the top over very long samples sizes of course (many, many seasons in some cases) - but its very variance driven now

Football itself is a game, you can't capture it in an algorithm, this uncertainty transfers into the game of fantasy football.... Overall though, stats and form and performance and eye tests are a pretty reliable way of predicting an outcome.

But random cancellations of games is not part of the game of football, it's an external event that I can not plan for no matter how many stats and algorithms I study, or games I watch.

I find that takes away from my enjoyment of playing fantasy football......

I wonder if others feel the same...

I guess we just wait and see what to do with FH31 WC32 plans and so on?
