Man City v Arsenal postponed as ‘precaution’ amid coronavirus fears

Double Gameweek 29 is officially off. That’s because Arsenal’s rearranged trip to Manchester City has been postponed amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak.

The news comes after it was revealed on Tuesday that Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis had recent contracted COVID-19.

As the Greek side were at the Emirates Stadium for a Europa League match less than two weeks ago, it has now emerged that several Arsenal squad members met Marinakis.

These players, who have not been named, are now self-isolating at home for the remainder of the 14-day period after the meeting.

Arsenal announced the news in a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“The medical advice we have received puts the risk of (these players) developing Covid-19 at extremely low. However, we are strictly following the Government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact. As a result, the players are unavailable for tonight’s match against Manchester City and the Premier League has decided the game should be postponed. The players will remain at their homes until the 14-day period expires. Four Arsenal staff – who were sitting close to Mr Marinakis during the match – will also remain at home until the 14 days are complete.” – Arsenal statement

The postponement of Wednesday night’s match means that Arsenal v Man City will need a new date once again.

It also means that Gameweek 29 has now concluded so anyone who had Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) in their starting line-up will see their first substitutes come in.

It also means those who took a hit for Arsenal players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) or Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) will have to make do with the blanks they registered against West Ham.

As things stand, Arsenal’s trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30 is still going ahead, as the self-isolating players can return to training on Friday.

“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Mr Marinakis a swift recovery and we look forward to the players and staff returning to work on Friday in preparation for our match at Brighton.” – Arsenal statement

Are people really whinging about wanting points for Arsenal/City put back to this week?

What nonsense! Cancelled games are cancelled, be it for bad weather or any other reason.

Id have liked Auba (c) tonight though..

I really strongly believe that managers who used chips solely to attack this double gameweek (ie, triple captain and free hit only) should have those chips reimbursed. They will have derived absolutely no benefit from them due to an entirely unforeseeable circumstance and for some it’ll be a season-wrecker.

Yes, I fall within this category and yes this is probably why I feel this way. I’ve dropped from 27k to 45k and used the most valuable chip (FH) on what turned out to be a single gameweek. Leaves a really bad taste that, despite still being sat a decent OR, makes me want to write off this season.

It's unlucky but it's the rules. Games can be called off for a number of reasons and it's just tough.

You can say exactly the same about any game called off for a storm etc. It's FPL, it's unpredictable, that's what makes it great.

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!

In retrospect, of course it turned out that way, yes.

In my circumstances however, it was not silly to use it without foresight. I was ranked 25k, needed Auba (C) to protect my rank but couldn’t do that without taking a -4. I had planned well and had my 11 players ready for 31 so didn’t need to save FH for it. 34 was going to be a very minor DGW with no top 6 teams doubling and overriding captaincy option, so didn’t need to save FH for then either. Without doubt, results and postponements asides, this was the highest % opportunity for me to play the FH chip.

Postponements happen all the time in football. People getting back wasted chips is a hole we never want to go down.

We all have tough weeks, chin up and move on.

        No, you’re wrong.

Injuries happen every single week in football. It’s an inherent risk every single time you put a player in your first XI.

        This does not.

games get cancelled for many reasons, players get injured etc but that is part of the game, you have a bench to cover it.

However I am sure you might have held back on playing your chip if there was a storm warning or it was during the middle of winter with the forecast of snow, or generally there may have been a reason to doubt both fixtures.

This is an exceptional case that could not be foreseen, not something that could be planned for in any way, so I agree with you that it is sensible for the chip to be reinstated

That said, it ain’t going to happen 😉

Yeah, it isn’t going to happen.

But those saying this is in any way ‘part and parcel’ of FPL are either being overly competitive or just outright wrong. It’s an entirely unique and incredibly unfortunate scenario that had absolutely no warning signs of happening whatsoever.

Oh well, just got to try and sneak into the top 10k now. Feels really demoralizing though.

2-3 weeks ago, Italy had already instituted a law to play games behind closed doors, which then became total postponements. And other countries in Europe were also taking heed of this.

          I.e. the signs were there.

Of course in hindsight it's easy to say that this was to be expected, but frankly ... it was. Just a matter of time to see which was the first game / first gameweek which had games postponed or affected due to the virus.

Really bad luck for you that it happened to this game i guess.

Little lost here, help appreciated! 2 FT, 1.8 ITB. Should I get 3 more BGW31 assets (Wolves/Burnley/Watford) to have 8 starters or FH 31? Just have FH and BB left

    McCarthy,
    TAA, VVD, Lascelles
    Salah, Fernandes, Barnes, KDB*
    Aubameyang, Jimenez, Ings

    (Button, Traore*, O'Connell, Williams)

Unsure what to do with Traore now. Considering:

    A) McCarthy, Williams and Lascelles -> Pope, CTaylor and Saiss
    B) Aubameyang, Traore and TAA (!) -> Jota, Mane and Doherty
    C) FH BGW31 and work on strengthening Team
    D) Something Else

Seems a reasonable plan to hope for the best in 31, then WC to 3 City/Arsenal (3 doubles each) + some Everton/Leicester/United (2 doubles each), using FH in 34 to get a team out?

Alternative FH in 31, but then would need to build for 34 and the WC in 35?

Postponement of the Arsenal v Man City game is the best news I've had this FPL season! I now get Barnes' massive 19 pt haul instead of KDB's blank!

BTW, did anyone else have a bench like this?

    McCarthy 12 pts
    Barnes 19 pts
    Boly 8 pts
    Fernandez 7 pts

I didn't bench boost, and this total would have been better than my last three years of BB combined! No wonder I;m languishing at around 250K this season!

Yeah. Massively unlikely of course, but we could see a bunch of games dropping out and perhaps further precautions being put in place.

Who knows. Can only deal with what we know and move from there.

All bets are off it seems... FH31 was my plan because the 7 players I’ve got for that week are underwhelming... but after this latest cancellation who knows

I dont see the logic in cancelling the game tonight, but continuing to play the rest of the games as normal, ie not behind closed doors without fans.
Covid is here, in the uk, if you are cancelling the city arsenal game, surely the rest of epl should be either postponed, or at least played without fans.
The game tonight is cancelled because maybe 10 ppl came into contact with someone with the virus. Who's to say out of the 400k odd fans going to epl games this weekend haven't been in contact with someone with the virus. Who knows if they have or haven't.

Think these last few GWs have underlined the importance of ensuring you have a VC in a different match.

If we dont have any news regarding any postponements due to coronavirus, would you do Stephens to Alonso (C) with a ft? (Villa in shambles)

Would want Alonso anyway gw32 onwards (if the human race survives) with no WC left.

Nuno: "Are we sending the right message to say we're ok to have contact and fans can't?"

Worth noting that despite PSG vs Dortmund supposedly being behind closed doors tonight, there will be 500 members from PSG in the stands.

The Valencia atalanta game had some fans there, even if you couldn't see them, could hear them.
Was prob just a could 100 as well, but again makes no sense!

Is it worth sacrificing getting an additional week 31 player in ( so play 8 not 9) and get Fernandes in now?

Wait for Peps presser over KDB. Surely he'd like to give him some minutes before Madrid and it's Burnley at home.

Incase we dont get any positive comments over KDB, KDB to Bruno looks like a good move as you'd want the Portuguese from gw32 anyway

Probably. A 4 point hit for the additional gw31 player could be repaid by Bruno this week itself.

I think it probably is. Fernandes this week could easily score better than the likes of Alli, Sarr and Antonio in 31. Once you have the essential core of 3 Liverpool + 3 Wolves I think it's fine to attack GW30 and go for Fernandes or Chelsea assets.

Think he starts and plays 50-60 odd minutes imo.
Regarding KDB, nobody knows. But if I had to guess, think he comes off the bench for 20 odd mins

This whole city cancellation is what it is, it probably wouldn't have been a massive diff for me with kdb and auba(c)(maybe would have meant less ppl getting jam lundy points)
The killer for me was vardy and barnes on monday!

Hows this look as a draft for a GW32 WC, planning of FH 34 for blanks, with maximum double GW players and BB left to use:

    Henderson / Ederson
    Wan B - Soy - Otamendi - O'Connell - Digne
    Kdb - Martial - Pepe - Fernandes - Fleck
    Auba - DCL - Vardy

Exact cash I have now, likley to change by them but just for an idea if WC32 makes sense.

    So many doubles in there.
