Arsenal manager Arteta tests positive for coronavirus

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) – which has lead to the Gunners’ Gameweek 30 match at Brighton to be postponed.

The news was revealed in an official club statement on Thursday evening that explained the Spaniard would, in line with government guidelines, begin a period of self-isolation.

Included in the statement was confirmation that Arsenal’s London Colney training centre had been closed and that a “significant” number of individuals who work there will also self-isolate.

This is expected to include the “full first-team squad and coaching staff” although it must be remembered that West Ham’s squad and manager David Moyes were all in contact with Arsenal in Gameweek 29.

Furthermore, Arsenal also faced League One club Portsmouth at Fratton Park over the last 10 days.

“Our London Colney training centre has been closed after head coach Mikel Arteta received a positive COVID-19 result this evening. Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff, as well as a smaller number of people from our Hale End Academy which we have also temporarily closed as a precaution.” – Arsenal statement

The news came just a short time after the Premier League had issued a statement of their own to insist that all Gameweek 30 matches were scheduled to go ahead as normal.

However, this latest update is likely to put paid to that directive, as the entire Arsenal squad is now unavailable for their Gameweek 30 trip to Brighton.

As a result, the Seagulls announced later on Thursday evening that their meeting with the Gunners had now been called off.

“First and foremost our thoughts are with Mikel Arteta and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“It’s absolutely essential the health and wellbeing of individuals takes priority and with that in mind, Saturday’s match has been postponed. We apologise to all fans for any inconvenience but trust everyone will understand that we are all facing an unprecedented situation. As expected, the Premier League have now released a subsequent statement announcing an emergency meeting with all clubs on Friday morning.” – Brighton chief executive, Paul Barber

“In light of Arsenal’s announcement tonight confirming that their first-team coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures. The Premier League will make no further comment until after that meeting.” – Premier League statement

A 37-year old ex professional player is hardly at risk of anything serious.

But his symptoms will wear off in two weeks or so I guess?
It is like having the flu.

Really hope Arteta does (did) pass it on the anyone with diabetes or any other disease making them vulnerable. And those elderly should steer clear.

But yes ofc we all hope that all with Corona gets better sooner rather than later.

But the reason we are cancelling matches, making people stay home from jobs and so on - that is not because of healthy young man in good shape like Arteta.

          Exactly this ^

It isn't about individuals strong enough to get through the symptoms. It's about limiting our exposure to others that CANNOT. Those with already weaken immune systems are at risk along with the elderly and young. Many people are infected without showing symptoms which makes the situation worse and means you can unknowingly pass it along to someone who won't be able to beat it.

People need to THINK outside themselves.

Sure Arteta will be fine, he is a fit youngish man. What annoys me, is that he has been tested after feeling a bit ill, whilst tens of thousands of people are feeling a bit ill at home and have no hope of being tested for coronavirus. 111 saying just stay in and hope for the best. Many propably have it. Obviously higher profile people will get the more urgent testing, and it will come back positive. But if they had the resources to test everyone in the UK, that felt a bit ill, tens of thousands of people will test positive.

But also most of them, dependant on underlying health conditions and age, will be ok.

That's not exactly how pandemics work.

Many (poor and middle income) people cannot afford to sit at home. Many of them will go out and continue to infect the elderly, the children and those who have respiratory issues, causing the latter to suffer or die.

I surely don't understand. Between BBC and Irish television one expert contradicts the next to some degree. Even the wisdom of closing schools, as you rightlysay, will prob affect those that are poor and middle income as they'll probably use at-risk of infection grandparents to mind their children while they go out to work. And when schools reopen the congregating children might spread the virus even further.

True. There wouldn't be so much panic and closures if people followed basic healthy practices, e.g. cover mouth when coughing, washing hands, not touching face and not eating bat soup. Unfortunately, most people cannot be trusted with doing these simple things.

Exactly, and these footballers, young and at the peak of physical health may well contract the virus, but they will be fine in a week and ready to play football like nothing ever happened. Sure, isolate to avoid passing on to anyone old or vulnerable, but surely this is all a bit over the top. Play and train behind closed doors, pass it between themselves, it's not going to matter at the end of the day.

True, at this stage nobody knows how many actually have the virus.....

It's worth noting he has probably passed on the virus to many of the players and staff which can then be passed to vulnerable family members and members of the public

It’s not an easy decision to call off a season. Many livelihoods rely on this. I’m sure it will be called off and postponed, as we’re starting to understand the seriousness of this, but it must be a tough call that I’m happy I don’t have to make.

For everyone saying "Just postpone the league and play the games in the summer"...

Do you realize how many people working in football who have holidays lined up that they wont just be willing to cancel. Im not even talking about the players. Theres training staff, physios, ground staff, stewards etc etc. Those are people with families who have their own lives not dictated by whatever is best for supporters or FPL players, but by their contracts and collective agreements protecting them from employer abuse. Its a lot more of a logistical problem to get the games going through summer than people seem to think on here.

If you work in the NHS its obviously different. Im working in health care and Im not allowed to travel even though I had a holiday lined up, and I can be stationed anywhere right now. Its in the collective agreements for health care workers.. Doesnt mean I lose my right to holidays when the pandemic is over, its just carried over to whenever the situation is over.

A private company like a PL club cant unilaterally decide that their employees have to work through the contractually agreed holiday period.

HOLIDAYS? You must be kidding. No one has anything planned right now, and if they do, it should be canceled.

Spoken like a true American. Your worker security is abhorrent. If holidays are canceled for whatever reason because of stuff like a pandemic then sure, dont travel. But then you shouldnt be working and when the pandemic is over you still retain your holiday.

In a civilized country, that is.

I want more vacation just like the next human does. And yes, we have less here than we should. But to be CONCERNED about the fact that people's holiday plans may have to be altered to fit in an unsuspended season is just ridiculous. They can reschedule. All of them.

They can reschedule if they come to an agreement like getting higher pay/bonus etc to work, but anywhere that isnt a corporate hell hole (the US) the employer cant just unilaterally decide what the employees have to do regarding things like holidays

    I think they should:

    - end the season now with current league positions
    - allocate 3 points to the higher placed team for those that have a game in hand i.e. 3 for Man City and Sheff Utd
    - deduct 20 points from any team having breached FFP rules

    😎

All this chaos because of the cruel "wet" meat markets in China.

We knew about the horrific treatment of animals in these places where live animals were kept with meat and slaughtered in filthy conditions ... And we did nothing.

    Now look at this mess.

At minimum, games will proceed this weekend with no fans.
At worst, they suspend the season, indefinitely.

I think we're looking at a worst case scenario.

Get well soon Mikel Arteta and anybody else who is affected or their families are by the virus.

If you are blessed enough to have your parents/grandparents/elderly relatives or friends, try to advise them to self isolate.

Look after yourself and if possible support others, especially those of high risk and with underlying respiratory issues.
