Arsenal manager Arteta tests positive for coronavirus

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) – which has lead to the Gunners’ Gameweek 30 match at Brighton to be postponed.

The news was revealed in an official club statement on Thursday evening that explained the Spaniard would, in line with government guidelines, begin a period of self-isolation.

Included in the statement was confirmation that Arsenal’s London Colney training centre had been closed and that a “significant” number of individuals who work there will also self-isolate.

This is expected to include the “full first-team squad and coaching staff” although it must be remembered that West Ham’s squad and manager David Moyes were all in contact with Arsenal in Gameweek 29.

Furthermore, Arsenal also faced League One club Portsmouth at Fratton Park over the last 10 days.

“Our London Colney training centre has been closed after head coach Mikel Arteta received a positive COVID-19 result this evening. Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff, as well as a smaller number of people from our Hale End Academy which we have also temporarily closed as a precaution.” – Arsenal statement

The news came just a short time after the Premier League had issued a statement of their own to insist that all Gameweek 30 matches were scheduled to go ahead as normal.

However, this latest update is likely to put paid to that directive, as the entire Arsenal squad is now unavailable for their Gameweek 30 trip to Brighton.

As a result, the Seagulls announced later on Thursday evening that their meeting with the Gunners had now been called off.

“First and foremost our thoughts are with Mikel Arteta and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“It’s absolutely essential the health and wellbeing of individuals takes priority and with that in mind, Saturday’s match has been postponed. We apologise to all fans for any inconvenience but trust everyone will understand that we are all facing an unprecedented situation. As expected, the Premier League have now released a subsequent statement announcing an emergency meeting with all clubs on Friday morning.” – Brighton chief executive, Paul Barber

“In light of Arsenal’s announcement tonight confirming that their first-team coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures. The Premier League will make no further comment until after that meeting.” – Premier League statement

If FPL gets cancelled, how would you deal with a cash league?

I run a cash league for 22 of us. 1st/2nd are likely to be 1st/2nd come end of season as they have 80-120 gap on everyone else.

But 3rd/4th have more chips than 1st/2nd who have no chips left?

    £300 1st
    £100 2nd
    £20 3rd

Whats the fair way to deal with this?

Even though 3rd/4th will never catch1st/2nd I know they’ll lean on their chips and say they possibly could have won or come second..... So pay out as is doesn’t seem fair in someways.

But then void isn’t fair because why should the bottom half of the league get their money back....?

        Confusing!

I'm quite a way ahead in ours - I would think the fair way is to just pay out , as each manager of the month has been paid out so far. But, I can see a situation where the remaining money is divided by everyone who took part, therefore all receiving £16 of our original £20 back. I'd be gutted mind

This is the issue I’ve got ! I agree with this thinking because of the gap at the top. I’ll have to think of something along these lines.

I'm in same position. Running the league and winning by about 100 pts. Gunna have to just pay out on current standings. I've only used TC, everyone below has used more chips. It wouldnt be fair to me to refund everyone... when I have very little chance of not winning should the league continue. Fair?

Problem is, you may not have used your chips, but 3rd May have used less chips than 2nd, or 4th might have used less chips than 3rd......

        It’s a mess.

Got to try and find a balance somehow which doesn’t involve people at the bottom getting their money back, and somehow rewards people who are in very strong positions to win the league, or reach a cash position in the league (1st 2nd 3rd).....

          • 8 Years

If you want to absolutely be fair and spend a lot of time... you would need to look at everyone's chips that have been played, work out on average how many points each chip has gained people across the league. Then once you have an average gain for each chip, add that to each person's score that still has the chip intact.

or everyone gets some cash, more for the current first place, the least for last.

Follow the official way the FPL handles it. If they say "Season over, congratulations to RandomCasual23 for finishing #1!" then you pay out according to standings. If FPL say "FPL 2019/20 is considered void" then you give everyone their money back.

If the season gets voided as well as being no winner does that mean no teams will be relegated and the season will just start from scratch at some point in the future?

Also will the other European competitions just start from scratch again?

Why? Its the most logical, reasonable and fair. The chances of 'starting up' again seems like a logistical nightmare unless its only a brief delay, then it could work.

            1. waldo666
              • 13 Years

I would counter that it is the exact opposite of all those things. If it goes on too long for a postponement to be viable then I certainly think the whole season is essentially wiped from the books and go again next (providing ofc that everything is in order by then).

Too many games played already to 'wipe it out'. This isnt the Thanos snap. Those matches happened. And there were a lot of them. Voiding it (aka "pretending it didnt happen") is just a ridiculous solution.

They'd just declare the season 'over'. We have professional player strikes in the US in various sports and when its interfered with the season (lost games) that's what happens, so there's a precedent of sorts.

This feels more like a war time situation.

The league was abandoned after 2 or 3 league matches in 1939 and voided i think.

That makes sense, but what happens when players or as in Arteta’s case has the virus. The games will be postponed. Ultimately time will run out. I think if this were October rather than March, there may be enough time. But now, I doubt there is. But this is wild speculation of course, based on a peak in June/July.

Of course I'll be biding time to see if any of it will blow over naturally... but I still wouldn't mind discussing good transfer options for the likes of Periera considering the rest, giving he's out for the season now! 1. EURO 2020 is pushed back into 2021, then suspend the EPL and recommence in June / July and play out remaining games whilst pushing back commencement of 2020/2021 season.
    2. They void all English leagues completely, I can’t see how they can complete on current standings, OK Liverpool deserve to be champions, but relegation is tight, and all the other leagues too.

Maybe, but regardless we have to draw the line somewhere. Always going to be a bit more relaxed with everything that's going on, but still isn't the place to discuss politics 🙂

Option 3a and 3b: 3a) Standings frozen as is. Season declared over for all leagues. Pool are Prem champs, but mayyyybe there's no relegation or promotion. 3b) Or, there is relegation and promotion. Act of God and all.

I've heard the coronavirus isn't even real, just made up to stop liverpool winning the league. And they are paying actors and sportspeople money to pretend they have caught it to keep up the illusion.

Was Arteta on freekicks for Everton? Himself and Tim Cahill used to the first picks in my FPL team.

Oh well, 3 bookies have already paid me out on Liverpool but what an anti-climax. And Bees pushing for a playoff place. They should all play FIFA against each other behind closed doors. As long as family and friends with underlying health problems are ok, I guess that's the important issue, although I was catching my ML leader ha
