Arsenal manager Arteta tests positive for coronavirus

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) – which has lead to the Gunners’ Gameweek 30 match at Brighton to be postponed.

The news was revealed in an official club statement on Thursday evening that explained the Spaniard would, in line with government guidelines, begin a period of self-isolation.

Included in the statement was confirmation that Arsenal’s London Colney training centre had been closed and that a “significant” number of individuals who work there will also self-isolate.

This is expected to include the “full first-team squad and coaching staff” although it must be remembered that West Ham’s squad and manager David Moyes were all in contact with Arsenal in Gameweek 29.

Furthermore, Arsenal also faced League One club Portsmouth at Fratton Park over the last 10 days.

“Our London Colney training centre has been closed after head coach Mikel Arteta received a positive COVID-19 result this evening. Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff, as well as a smaller number of people from our Hale End Academy which we have also temporarily closed as a precaution.” – Arsenal statement

The news came just a short time after the Premier League had issued a statement of their own to insist that all Gameweek 30 matches were scheduled to go ahead as normal.

However, this latest update is likely to put paid to that directive, as the entire Arsenal squad is now unavailable for their Gameweek 30 trip to Brighton.

As a result, the Seagulls announced later on Thursday evening that their meeting with the Gunners had now been called off.

“First and foremost our thoughts are with Mikel Arteta and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“It’s absolutely essential the health and wellbeing of individuals takes priority and with that in mind, Saturday’s match has been postponed. We apologise to all fans for any inconvenience but trust everyone will understand that we are all facing an unprecedented situation. As expected, the Premier League have now released a subsequent statement announcing an emergency meeting with all clubs on Friday morning.” – Brighton chief executive, Paul Barber

“In light of Arsenal’s announcement tonight confirming that their first-team coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures. The Premier League will make no further comment until after that meeting.” – Premier League statement

There's a chance anything along those sort of lines could happen, but we don't have all of the variables to work out the probability I'm afraid.

No chance. 14 day isolation, since they last met Arteta (guessing that was Tuesday)

I mean, they're extremely unlikely to die from it given that they're (obviously) very fit and young, but it would be pretty irresponsible to expose yourself to it and risk passing it on to someone more vulnerable.

Unless you're suggesting they all quarantine themselves of course and not come into contact with anyone apart from each other.

I could understand if there was one or two more games to play to finish the season but 10 games? Plus cup competitions. The teams will still be interacting with each other plus the coaches and media etc it’s only a matter of time until so many people have caught the virus that it won’t go ahead anyway, may aswell stop it now.

The reality is, with a meeting scheduled between all PL parties for tomorrow morning we can expect a 2/3 week postponement of all fixtures. Minimum. Based on the facts and all of the relevant sporting postponements around us it would be stubborn stupidity for it not to happen in the UK.

Arsenal City match got postponed because Arsenal players got into contact with someone who tested positive so can’t see why Wolves West Ham wouldn’t get cancelled since West Ham players and manager came into contact with Arteta.

Not being funny but here in Scotland they are saying from Monday any social gathering of over 500 people will be postponed. I'm going to Ibrox on Sunday where there will be 50000 people. It's absolutely disgusting that they haven't just shut up shop immediately. If Rangers were playing St Mirren on Sunday would that go ahead? It disgusts me that money and everything else goes before what really matters. People's health. Well I'm chosing to miss my first game in over 15 years as my mum is not very well and I'm not willing to risk it. I love my country but at times we really do live In the dark ages and forget what's important. Stay safe .

You don't see the irony/ridiculous nature of cancelling all gathering on the Monday for 500 ppl..yet 24 hours before there will be 50000 in one place? I personally think that's laughable from the government

I completely understand and appreciate the gravity of the situation. If it were up to me the league would've been suspended long before Arteta contracted the virus. I was simply responding to the post as if hypothetically the GW were to go ahead. Is there something wrong with that? No need to be rude about it mate.

On the same page, mate. Letting this week's matches go on as planned is absolute madness, and I'm expecting them to be postponed tomorrow, but as of right now the games are about to go ahead. And the real world implications are covered elsewhere, and we discuss them with loved ones, which in turn gives room to dicsuss FPL on here - until cancellations are confirmed.

I love this game and I'm a bit of an addict (aren't we all!) - but health comes first... I don't believe we get any fixtures for 2/3 weeks... I'd love to be wrong but after today, the F1 postponement, the tennis, all the football in Europe, the NBA (the list could continue)... Not to mention Arteta, Leicester players in isolation, Mendy rumours, it's all coming to a head. It's unfortunate, but just the way it is.

Just wish good health on everyone. It's spread already and 80-90% don't even show signs at an early stage. Prime example is Arteta a week ago shaking hands with the Olympiakos owner. Then he showed signs and got confirmed, and Arteta tests positive exactly a week later. No coincidence. The amount of people we all mix with on a daily basis is huge. It's inevitable. We shouldn't be mixing huge amounts of people readily and accelerating this process.

2 up. If the league is postponed these players can keep rising and by the time the league resumes they will be a million up

They do have power but the Prime Minister said stopping sporting events won't help.

Football authorities have been waiting for leadership from the government. Guess they realise they're not getting any so need to make a decision now.

Won't be long until we'll see Paul Merson's Corona XI. Arteta as as manager. Rugani in def, CHO outwide, Gabbi up top. Decent spine

PL needs to be decisive like the NBA

Pause the league for 2 weeks and reassess

      1. Andy_Social

Two weeks won't be enough given the government's slow response. I'd say a month or even two months' postponement will be required.

      If they don't postpone, I guess I'll be taking a -4 at least. Probably a -8.

Why people still care about their FPL team?
      Its totally over.

      1. Andy_Social

I wouldn't look at it that way. Many people will be off work/school, in isolation, the vast majority not sick. FPL is a good way to pass the time, take the stress out of the enforced situation.

Yeah, the poster implied we should stop caring about FPL as we're all going to die or something. Obviously, if the PL is suspended there's no FPL to distract us. I guess hours put into Football manager will mushroom!

Very true mate, it is. But without any fixtures its pointless.

That's not to say we can't all be on here, its just the talk won't be game week- or fpl specific! But as long as we all active, that's all that really matters eh
