Arsenal manager Arteta tests positive for coronavirus

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) – which has lead to the Gunners’ Gameweek 30 match at Brighton to be postponed.

The news was revealed in an official club statement on Thursday evening that explained the Spaniard would, in line with government guidelines, begin a period of self-isolation.

Included in the statement was confirmation that Arsenal’s London Colney training centre had been closed and that a “significant” number of individuals who work there will also self-isolate.

This is expected to include the “full first-team squad and coaching staff” although it must be remembered that West Ham’s squad and manager David Moyes were all in contact with Arsenal in Gameweek 29.

Furthermore, Arsenal also faced League One club Portsmouth at Fratton Park over the last 10 days.

“Our London Colney training centre has been closed after head coach Mikel Arteta received a positive COVID-19 result this evening. Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff, as well as a smaller number of people from our Hale End Academy which we have also temporarily closed as a precaution.” – Arsenal statement

The news came just a short time after the Premier League had issued a statement of their own to insist that all Gameweek 30 matches were scheduled to go ahead as normal.

However, this latest update is likely to put paid to that directive, as the entire Arsenal squad is now unavailable for their Gameweek 30 trip to Brighton.

As a result, the Seagulls announced later on Thursday evening that their meeting with the Gunners had now been called off.

“First and foremost our thoughts are with Mikel Arteta and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“It’s absolutely essential the health and wellbeing of individuals takes priority and with that in mind, Saturday’s match has been postponed. We apologise to all fans for any inconvenience but trust everyone will understand that we are all facing an unprecedented situation. As expected, the Premier League have now released a subsequent statement announcing an emergency meeting with all clubs on Friday morning.” – Brighton chief executive, Paul Barber

“In light of Arsenal’s announcement tonight confirming that their first-team coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures. The Premier League will make no further comment until after that meeting.” – Premier League statement

Was considering the same move, and then moving alli to fernandes in gw 32. Issue is, there is no guarantee (at all) that gw 31 goes ahead.

So right now I'm holding off on all, Kdb v Burnley vs Alli v Utd is like a no brainer

I am from Pakistan and honestly I feel we have been very lucky considering we share border with China and Iran and only 23 cases have been registered so far despite not having any sort of restrictions on gatherings. But in Europe its spreading very fast. May be its because of our temperature or other such factors. Anyways stay safe all of you in Europe and others.

The point is that number is far from accurate. Either the government has been slow to react or it is undertesting/underpublishing. The whole world is in the same boat with this one

Yeah like USA's numbers! 40 deaths, 1700 infected. Not bad eh except only approx 11,000 people have been tested. That's 34 people per 1 million of people tested
For reference, Germany for instance has just over 2700 infected, but with 35000 tests equaling 420 per 1 million people compared to USA 34.

I can't even find the stats for Pakistan but India has only tested 3 for every 1 million people as of 1 week ago.

Yes that's exactly my point that it appears to me(I may be wrong though) that it is spreading faster in Europe

No it's spreading faster in areas where measures aren't taken soon enough.
And by those figures, 40 dead, 1700 infected from just 11000 tested in USA is an extremely high positive rate and death rate. Germany has tested 35000 people, 2700 infected with 6 deaths.

It "hasn't spread" as you feared it would be because such a minute percentage of people have actually been tested.

Spreading in cities is also much faster than in countryside. And this has similar symptoms as seasonal flu. So I wouldn't trust the numbers too much yet. Even if you are behind, it is far from safe.

in UK there are 1,000 cases that have been found from 35,000 people who have been physically tested (swab) but the Government thinks there may be 10,000 infected people walking around without even knowing it.

No such swab tests happen at airports anywhere, never mind Pakistan.

As of 10 March Pakistan didn’t even make in to WHO list of testing that started at 500 people tested.

Pakistan has 3,500 people quarantined just at their border with Iran.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are tens of thousands infected in Pakistan that do not even know it

Yes that's right but 430 people died in Iran but not a single death reported in Pakistan and India Because of CV so far. And this made me believe that may be there are some factors because of which it hasn't spread in our region. But I am not a doctor so it's just a wild assumption/guess

You seem to be missing the point - nothing is being reported in Pakistan linked to this because hardly any tests have been made.

100,000 people die in Pakistan every month, the Covid-19 deaths are probably just not identified

There are no accurate figures on this. But even so going with your figure, would put mortality rate around 1% (likely less in countries with developed healthcare systems). Really worrying.

There are 8 billion filthy humans on this planet and we are one of the worst species of any on the face of the Earth.

We need a bit of a cull tbh. A reboot.

            If I go I go!

I'm not changing my sense of humour.

I'm also well aware of the severity of this issue and the threat it poses to everyone and our so very important human lives.

Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, is thought to kill some 1-2% of known patients, compared to around 0.1% for winter influenza... I'd say that's 1000% bad at worst...

In my neighbourhood, people have at least been nicer to strangers than usual. Of course, I expect civility levels will fall off a bit now that we're being encouraged to maintain two metres' separation from others ...

Apparently Callum Hudson-Odoi has the virus as well so assume Chelsea match will be off as well, even before any league wide decision

                    For a -8?!

I also own Soyuncu & Vardy - highly doubt Leicester play.

All PL games to be cancelled.

Remaining fixtures will be rearranged to be played as no rules FIFA. Each club must nominate two first team players to play each game, which will be streamed live on amazon prime.

                You heard it here first.

What do people think most likely scenario is now?

All US sport suspended, Italy on total lock down and as I understand it the UK is c4weeks begins Italy in terms of the stages of corona virus. Australian Grand Prix cancelled. Surely this weeks fixtures and a fixtures for the foreseeable future will have to be cancelled?

Really hard to see a good way to conclude the leagues re: titles, promotions relegation as there are still so many games left to be played and once they suspend, corona virus isn’t going to go anywhere any time soon (months and months).

I now am starting to think that annulling this season for all football leagues is the most likely scenario which would be incredibly harsh on teams doing well. Carnage.

Suspension, euros postponed, all league games finished in the summer . Uncompleted season would set football back decades

But we are now in the UK in a ‘delay’ phase - corona virus will be at its peak in the summer.

If they suspend then it’s hard to see them playing again until autumn at the earliest.

It’s an impossible situation once they suspend

the solution is to scrap the season and re-start next season with the same teams as this year. So no champion (bad luck Liverpool), no promotion, no relegation, etc. (that’s assuming that this season cannot be completed)

I genuinely think this is now the most likely scenario - but you can see how some teams will be up in arms about it (ie Liverpool ,
And all the teams in promotion spots in other leagues)

If they can't complete the season then there will be those that benefit and those that don't regardless what solution is implemented. Fairest way imo is to make this season void. This is a health emergency first and foremost.

The ripple effect of uncompleted seasons in europe would last a decade.

I’m not saying it’s a good idea but what’s the other option if you assume that games can’t restart until autumn at the earliest?

same would apply to other leagues that can't be completed, as well as European competitions. this isn't a sport issue, its a global pandemic and the repercussions go well beyond sport.
