Chelsea squad self-isolate as Hudson-Odoi tests positive for coronavirus

The spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout Premier League personnel increased in the early hours of Friday morning, with Chelsea the latest club to be hit.

The Blues announced via a statement on their website that Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) had tested positive for the virus and that their training facility would undergo a partial closure.

Crucially, in line with government health guidelines, Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with Hudson-Odoi, which includes the full first-team squad, will now also enter into a period of self-isolation.

“Chelsea men’s team player Callum Hudson-Odoi had a positive test result for Coronavirus returned this evening. Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with the player in the men’s team building will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. These will include initially the full men’s team squad, coaching staff and a number of backroom staff.” – Chelsea statement

Hudson-Odoi becomes the first Premier League player to be announced as having contracted COVID-19 but the virus had already hit Arsenal late on Thursday.

The Gunners announced that manager Mikel Arteta had tested positive for COVID-19 and that their full senior squad would also self-isolate.

Shortly after, Brighton confirmed that their Gameweek 30 meeting with Arsenal was postponed.

No announcement has been made about Chelsea’s scheduled fixture with Aston Villa, although this is expected to be postponed as well.

The football community now awaits the results of an emergency Premier League meeting on Friday morning.

The league had officially stated on Thursday evening that all matches would go ahead as planned this weekend, although this was less than an hour before the Arteta news broke.

In response to that, the Premier League’s hand was clearly forced and an emergency meeting scheduled.

What to do if you think you might have coronavirus*

If you think you might have coronavirus or you’ve been in close contact with someone who has it:

  • stay at home and avoid close contact with other people
  • do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital
  • use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service to find out what to do next

The 111 coronavirus service will tell you if you need to continue to stay at home (self-isolate) or if you need medical help.

Not a pop but that would be very very unfair not to award Pool the title. They are so far ahead points-wise and have worked so hard to get where they are only to be trolled by a virus. Not staying the games should go ahead but starting all over is robbing them of the title.

Of course. But if the league is cancelled today. You can’t give Liverpool the title. The season would be void

      2. TheDragon
        • 5 Years

Agreed it would be exceptionally harsh on them but ultimately correct as they haven’t won it , they are just extremely likely to win it.

Probably why the premier league are desperate to play 2 more weeks to get them the points they need

Say you play those games, and they manage to win, how do you decide relegation? That is just as important to those clubs, as winning the league is to pool.
Also euro qualification, what happens there? More to it than getting games in for pool to win the league.

      3. jason_ni
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 16 days ago

You say it would be unfair not to give pool trophy if its cancelled(which it is) but if it is cancelled, and you do this is it fair on norwich, villa and bmouth to relegate them while they still have a chance? Nope it's not.
That's why it cant be postponed, whole thing should be writoff

        1. Superflymonk
          • 9 Years
          4 years, 16 days ago

To be honest, we don't know how long this pandemic will go on and what further implications it may have so I really can't say what course of action would be best, but if it were up to me, it would be to suspend all leagues until the situation is at least manageable if not contained and then the play the games indoors when no one's health is put at risk, but that's just me. Obviously safety first, so if they feel canceling the entire thing makes sense, that okay. Just it still would be unfair to Liverpool and bottom 3.

          1. jason_ni
            • 8 Years
            4 years, 16 days ago

I agree.. it should be postponed, until safe to resume and reach the conclusion.
But if that cant be done, then only correct to say no winners/relegations - as no one has actually won it or been relegated.

As I said yesterday, it is probable that at least one person in every first team squad in the PL will test positive for coronavirus. The reason we don't know is because we aren't doing enough testing. It is stupid for the season to continue now and should be paused.

What don't people understand? It is not about millions of people dying (although plausible that thousands could die). It is about the impact on the nation's health, nation's resources and nation's economy / finances. It is about doing stuff now to reduce the impact on the three aforementioned areas in future.

You can't reduce the number of people who will get sick, you can just delay it. So any sort of lockdown places a greater strain on nation's resources and finances.

Not on expert on the 3rd (health) but a lot of experts agree with government's approach on this including their decision not to cancel sporting events at this point in time.

If you can delay it then the burden for the healthcare won't be as huge. If everyone is sick at once the healthcare can't handle all of them resulting in higher mortality

Surely the problem is that even at relatively low levels of infection (Lombardy), the health service still gets overwhelmed. None of this stops until we get a vaccine in 12 to 18 months or we get herd immunity through about a 60% infection rate, which is a huge amount of people whether it happens quickly or slowly.

Maybe if Italy has taken more countermeasures and Italians actually obeyed the rules the level of infection would be much lower.
I think it can be stopped like in China but drastic measures are needed (like putting whole Wuhan into quarantine, stopping all public transport, people not leaving homes). I doubt it can be done in Europe though...

This is not the issue. The effect on the nation from shutting everything down is far more drastic than if the virus was allowed to just roam free and infect everyone.

It's all about protecting the sick and elderly.

Have you red what those "mild" symptoms are?
I was surprised when I saw that by "mild" the mean pneumonia.. LOL.. I mean, it's not life threatning, but image so many pneumonia patients at once.. The disease spread has to be slowed down.. And yes, it can be fatal for elderly people, but also, people with asthma and pulmonary issues..

Pneumonia is life threatening , even for normal healthy types, young or old.
I've had it and never want it again ever.

I'm not too certain that is what they are referring to as mild symptoms though. There was a guy on news last night who has had it and said he has had worse colds
              .
What he really meant was hed had worse coronavirus before. Most of us have had some strain of coronavirus before , many times, and put it down to a bad cold or flu.
Coronaviruses have been around since dawn of man.

The difference here, is that this is a brand new strain. Nobody has built up any sort of immunity and so it spreads like wildfire and is more lethal.

From what I understand, this virus can be fought off, but it is persistent and if gets into lungs and develops pneumonia you're in big trouble, particularly the old and infirm.

No one has immunity but essentially a bad flu. Calum Hudson Odoi says he’s already recovered and now he’s ‘tested positive’ and shuts down a squad. Lol. Sooner we all get it the better so we don’t crash the economy, lose our jobs etc etc.

How has your season gone with autosubs?

One thing is for sure, start of next season I will go 4 x 4m for bench to have more cash for my starting 11 even if none of my subs play. Autosub has been pretty useless for me as I always fully concentrate on my starting 11 plus I NEVER start with FLAGGED players in my starting 11. Once I have built a decent TV then only will I start getting in playable subs which probably will only be needed for my BB 🙂

In order of GW, player out, player in, autosub points and GW points.

        1 - Trossard - Greenwood - 1 - 83
        9 - Salah - Dunk - 1 - 38
        13 - Salah - Mount - 1 - 68
        15 - Salah - Traore - 3 - 62
        16 - Mane - Traore - 2 - 72
        20 - Vardy - Cantwell - 1 - 64
        21 - Vardy - Lundsstram - 1 - 71
        28 - Vardy - Cantwell - 3 - 35

So I got a total of 13 points from autosubs this whole season and my bench only came into play in 8 GW's.

My scores were also not that bad over the period of the 8 GW's.

So my strategy for next season is fck my bench and max my starting 11 with the £'s I gain from non playing subs.

        Fck autosub 😀

I've gotten 22, which isnt great, but I generally start with fodder on my bench, and money in my 11. This year it was 4.0, greenwood, dendo and diop.

No way, too much work and it wouldn't be fair to others who waited. They have rules. Read them. They will change the deadline if matches are postponed.

I'd say it's just as unfair to those that made the transfers.
You can plan an early transfer, based on the upcoming games.
If those games are all cancelled, then it defeats the purpose really.

They will not change the deadline.
The games will be rescheduled and fall in different gameweeks. We score 0 for gw30. Or -4 in my case. Cancel your benchboost too, because if you've played it for 0, you've played it.

No chance. Either the FPL table will stay as it is if the Premier League is cancelled (highly unlikley), or it will continue to evolve as the matches are played. As JTreble says - mid season custom programming is a no-no.

Firstly, wishing well anyone affected by this virus.

Secondly, I have no doubt that EPL will be postponed today, which is the correct decision.

Finally, putting my FPL hat on and aware that nobody has the answer; what do you reckon will happen with the gameweek deadline? Is it worth using one of two transfers to avoid burning one?

Building a team for 31(on 8 atm) and now the likely hood is that gw 31 will have full roster(if not some dbls) when(if) the season ever gets going again.

Not saying that wouldn't appeal to me, but I'd rather we get cl, and extra chance of signing better players who will come based on that.
                      Europa league is crap.

Liverpool surely declared as champions if the season is called off ?

Depends entirely on your perspective..... Particularly if you're a utd fan

Doesn’t work like that. You simply cannot extrapolate an incomplete season

I'm currently in the top 2k with WC, BB and FH left. Well set for easily my best ever finish.

It's a very frustrating year for the season to be cancelled. I know it's a terrible situation but if it could have waited a year I'd have very much appreciated it.

Don't worry, your rank will stay 2k until games start again

a likely suspended season means he has a further few weeks/months to ponder on his awful rank and gives extra time to come up with a plan on how to salvage an awful season 😉

To be fair, the more matches we get out the way before suspension, the fewer need to b organised upon returning...
